She's the greatest, although she couldn't make it in show business today since she wasn't an anorexic self-absorbed bimbo.

Gary, thanks for that. I am really into old live recordings. I wish we could figure out how to make music play as soon as the thread is opened.
Here's a studio recording of Ella and Louis Armstrong doing 'Summertime.' So sweet, reminds me of a branch swaying in the breeze

one word: They Can't Take That Away From Me
two words: My Funny Valentine
three words: Anything Goes
Ella edit:
look into the Cole Porter Songbook or the Rogers and Hart Songbook for a sampling of some greats.
Satch edit: anyone heard the Satchmo and Ella recordings? They are fantastic.

First time I paid (my own) money to see a performance, June '67,
it included Ella Fitzgerald, with a pretty good backup band,
led by a guy called Duke Ellington. Gal could sing, eh?
Word on My Funny Valentine, though.
Sarah Vaughn put on some absolute tour de force renditions with
piano accompaniment. Owned the damn thing. Brought tears to my
eyes.

Like the original poster said, now it's all self-absorbed maladjusted former Mouskateers ruling the commercial realm.

I love this thread! Please post up some more music and/or videos.
And to JEFF BATTEN / JUANDAFECAL / LOST ARROW, WHO SAID: Black ladies really can sing. LA
Do you really want to add 'racist numbskull' to your already-lengthy ST idiocy resume? Why don't you delete that dumb comment, and then I'll delete this?
Deal?

Few can scat as well as Ella could scat.
I have some photos I took of her at a live gig in Toronto around 1977. Heard her there along with the incomparable Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackan Big Band.

When I was about 14 or 15 (in 68 or 69), my grandfather was the head of the Music Extension at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He put on a concert with Ella backed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Skitch Henderson conducting.
I got to meet both back stage and shake their hands. I'm kicking myself for not appreciating the moment, as at that time I was more into San Francisco/Summer of love music.
Ella was amazing, she could jump registers easier than a 7/11 burgler on a Sat. night.

Truly one of the best voices of the 20th century. As someone posted earlier, some songwriters/composers considered her renditions of their songs as the definitive version. Everyone should own a set of her singing Cole Porter and Gershwin.

Saw her at Ontario Place in the late 70's or early 80's - same night as the Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band. What a lineup!
Road Time Shuffle is probably my all time favourite big band tune - we played it in the McMaster University Jazz Band where I was the only non-music student. I got the trombone solo on the woodwind bridge - doubling the flute a couple octaves lower. I couldn't play that part these days....
