I rolled my ankle nearly a month ago. Trail running..grrrrr! I haven't climbed at all since then. Even the motion of camming my foot in crack is pretty f'n painful. So I figure I'm probably off any hand sized/bigger cracks for a while. I may just stick to bouldering sport and finger cracks.

I'll be based in the Laramie area. Any recomondations? I've climbed at the voo. Wild Iris? Never climbed there myself mostly I hear about people dogging it...What about gyms?

What's the scene in laramie like? Typical college town? Any bars/resturant recomendations? I'll also be looking for deep tissue massage therapist and probably a yoga instructor. Mainly hatha, but ashtanga and yin are both cool with me.

cheers

Treating the rolled ankle, if it is only a sprain, is easily treated by taping. Any competent HS trainer could show you how to do it. But the purpose of the taping is to prevent rolling during recovery. So maybe you do not climb cracks, or only do so to the limit that the tape allows, which really means that you are tranferring the force to the tape other parts of your leg.

Depending on severity and experience, 2-6 weeks should set you straight if you avoid repeated injury in that time.

Stick to fists and wider (so you don't have to push off a twisted ankle in the jam) till it gets better. you'll be back in no time.

Check out the casper formation bouldering throughout the campus, ignore the signs.
I rolled my ankle like that on an aid fall in Vedauwoo, in winter '79/80 it got better.

Avoid saying "The 'Voo."

I rolled an ankle last summer. I crutched around for two weeks, then went back climbing. Couldn't do (good) foot jams on the injured side for 2-3 months. I would half weight it and move the other foot up. Following was slow and leading was scary.

Of course, some might say I can't do good foot jams even when I am well...

Have you had the ankle examined by a physician or equivalent? If it's bothering you that much after a month, that may not be a good sign. You should know where you stand, so to speak, before deciding what to do. You may even need x-rays.

I've had several ankle sprains, one quite bad. Ankle ligaments take time to heal, up to a year to heal fully. The sprain also affects your balance. Also, reinjuring the ankle before it's fully healed is a very bad idea.

The various forms of home physical therapy help a lot, if if practiced diligently. There's quite a variety. I also found that swimming energetically, especially kicking, helped. (Running in water, if you're up to it.)

yeah, the buckhorn is my favorite bar in the world also jeffries is a good place to eat.

Don't worry, everyone says "the 'voo" but me, it bugs me, nobody else will care.

World class sandstone buildering, long traverses, also steller fist cracks on the classroom building, and cool weird roof probleems on the two buildings by (east of) it.

Quartz,

I took a warp 5 gym fall a year ago--sprained my ankle badly when I hit the wall, and am still having a few minor problems with it. Mostly because I just had to climb and didn't give it time to heal properly, I think.

I would suggest giving it a complete rest for a while. It's difficult to do, but in the end, you'll suffer a lot less.

(I also found that the kicking in swimming laps aggravated it more than helped.)

Wild Iris is pretty nice as long as steep limestone pocket pulling is what you're after. Sinks is cool too and Lander is a fun town. If you're in Laramie you're not too far from some of the stuff around Ft. Collins too, and maybe 2 hours from Estes Park and the surrounding crags. Not at all a bad spot to be. Plus your license plate will have Devils Tower on it, which is way cooler than, say, New Jersey's license plates, which have the words "New Jersey" on them.

Estes looks cool. Maybe the diamond if the ankle gets happy. Finger pockets hmm.
