I saw Josune Bereziartu speak last week in Vancouver. A good talk, her first in North America. She's from the Basque country in Spain, and one of the best female rock climbers in the world. She's a slight woman, and has AMAZING muscular definition, as her photos showed. There's one at http://climbing.com/print/features/hf224josune.jpg

Hands down, Bobbi Bensman. Holy sh#t, that woman has muscles that could scare a bear! I was in the weight room with her last week (she'd just scored a free day pass) and the muscle heads there could only stare in amazement. Load that on top the fact that she'd had 2 kids...

Runner up=Tony Yaniro. I think I have the picture around somewhere of him de-pumping after doing laps on Equinox. Everybody remembers that picture, eh? Nuf said.

Dale had a high strength to weight ratio when he lived in his van at the Buttermilks. All I ever saw him eat was candy especially caramels.

Banny Root also was wicked strong.

Anyone who climbed as hard as they could would get pretty honed but, there were always those people that had the right physique and stood out from the rest like Ed Barry, Werner Braun, Yabo, Kauk, and Bachar. Me, no matter how hard I tried I could not get past a certain point. I guess I just enjoy eating too much.

Well, I can't let THIS site go flaccid! What a nice romp through memory lane. For women, I'd have to give a vote to the late, great Catherine Freer. Anyone have that old picture from one of the Outdoor Trade Shows in Vegas? There is a great shot, flexing from behind, of (if my memory serves me) Bridwell, Mugs, Sibley (?) J. Lowe (?) F. Beckey (?), and Catherine, all in lycra, sans shirts. She's as buff as the guys. Also, there is an old video we used to show at Neptune's, of Jill Lawrence and Luise Shephard working out in a gym....they were pretty buff in their day. Speaking of Neptune's, I always liked that old add of Gary climbing, perhaps in the Calanques? Nice arms! I seem to recall enjoying seeing Sandy East overindulge at parties.....seems he always ended up with his shirt off. Working at Neptune's for so many years gave me a lot of opportunity to ogle some of the most buff....quite a perk! :-) In fact, I'll give a nod to the man who caught my eye there over 20 years ago in his lycra, and eventually married...nice eye candy for this old gal! But with all due respect, I'll give my vote to Tony Yaniro, and those scenes from "On the Rocks". Quite the specimen! And even though he's not a climber, I have to recognize Laird Hamilton as fairly awesome. (Surfer, for those of you that don't know).
Anyway, I"m sure we can all appreciate the beauty of the human form,in its prime...can't ever be too old to enjoy that! Thanks for the great shots, all! :-)

Here’s one of the other stud muffin you mentioned, bouldering in North Wales well before you met, photo by Al Harris. Too cold and rainy or he would have removed the shirt.

Rick, my ex and I lived for a short while in north Wales (Tregarth, a tiny village 7km from Bangor) and that just about sums it up, though it does snow as well.

Of course, that also sums up Ireland much of the time.

Now, now... You know better! Absolutely no pads were necessary, due to the excessive amount of MOIST vegetation at the base of each Welsh boulder. And, if you look really closely at the photo, you can see Rick's damp EBs. Yeah?

Nice photo of Jack, though...

Damp bouldering, you bet. That's what the stolen (pinched) bar rags were good for.

Sarcasm? Who, moi? Climbing pads... Don't know when they were first invented (or used) but certainly they didn't exist in the day of Roberts, Lewis, Muir and Accomazzo that Summer in Wales. At least in our world-view... No pads at Baldy back then for precisely the same reason.

Wow, I don't think I even owned a pad until my 25th or 30th year of climbing! I finally broke down and bought one so that Bolton and my REALLY OLD friends wouldn't bust any brittle bones.

Hell, we took the pad up to Baldy just last Thursday! We ain't tired (or proud)... (Suit up, Henny! The weather's fine.)

My first experience with pads was when my girlfriend said she didn’t need them anymore.

Seriously doh, it was probably in the early nineties down in Hueco, my first pad was a ridge rest folded over with egg shell cushion from the local Kmart & held together with duct tape.
Talk about psychological protection... pathetic.

Anyone know if iron-man like posed ripped backshots of Wolfgang G. or Tobin S. exist? I would say they were pretty ripped.

Man, were they ahead of their time. It would be interesting to see shots of these two late great "StoneMasters." Even if Wolfgang wasn't actually a StoneMaster member, he is an honorary member by default in my book.

These two were damn good, strong, and true well rounded Alpinists, and way ahead of the times. They were Visionaries.

No one was more "ripped" than John Gill in his prime (the later 1950s and early-mid 1960s). No one in his class, and radically far ahead of his time. Even the great physical talents that started coming later were missing some of the magic of that great genius.

I have known a lot of very "ripped" climbers. I wasn't bad in my gymnastic heyday, you know, a plange on the floor, straight-body hollow backs, etc., but there were gymnasts twice my strength who couldn't climb well. I met all sorts of climbers through the years who were unbelievably "ripped," and made me feel weak by comparison, but I could do harder climbs than they. Barry Bates wasn't particularly ripped but could do one-finger pullups and was as good as anyone in Yosemite in his day. I climbed with Ed Barry and Dale, bouldering in Yosemite, and they were strong strong, light, could do one-arms as easily as they could slide a package of hamburger into their coat at Degnan's, but it was possible (at least at that time) to out boulder them. Maybe they got better, though. I knew weight lifters with huge muscles, to make Largo look like Pee Wee Herman, but they'd fall off ledges just standing there and were too muscle-bound to do a pull-up. Sacherer, as just one example, on the other hand, was thin, didn't look to have much muscle, though he could really climb... Holloway never looked ripped, but in bouldering he could make quick work of just about anyone...

Much as I feel honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as my fallen friend and hero Alex Lowe, I must correct this notion. Alex was a pull up fiend and an aerobic monster and trained his butt off. I was never that disciplined, and pulled off a relatively small number of hard leads by relying on good technique. Like Oli states above, ripped does not mean much if you can't dance with it.

My approach to climbing and focus on footwork made my venture into the world of professional dance a logical progression, that and being secure enough to pirouette in tights on stage. In a full body way, I would say top dancers get more "ripped" than climbers. We did try to bring the climber machismo into the studio, like "Ho-Man we better go crank some plie's".

California -- 1978.
I would make the pilgrimage to Yosemite every spring and fall from Colorado for years. It was the Holy Grail place, and I had one day that was utterly remarkable to a 19 year old kid.

I was working out in the Camp 4 gym and Bridwell approached me. We stuck up a conversation -- he assesed my character and determined I was not a big wall player, but he was so cordial and asked me if I had some laundry detergent he could borrow. Going back to my van that had been illegally parked right next to the ranger kiosk in C4 for two months, I grabbed the whole ten pound box and took it back to Bridwell. He seemed pleased...Tick # one.

An hour later I walked by Dale Bard who had just gotten off his third El Cap climb in a month, and he had less body fat and more bad-a#s tone than I have ever seen in a human to this day. He too, spoke to me in this super friendly manner. I can only say that Michalangelo's "David" was a pathetic redneck, fatman compared to Dale. As Mr. Bachar propose's, he is frighteningly fit and that is quite a statement coming from Bachar who is fit as h#ll.

As I am waiting for dinner outside the Lodge that night, Mr. Bachar complimented me on my dashiki and then uses those red flashing glasses during the NPS naturalist presentation to freak people out. He stood behind the presenter and flashed these tiny red laser lights at the crowd and then would smile slightly.

Scene three: I have already encountered Bridwell and Bard and Bachar. Now I am eating a cheeseburger at the Four Seasons And I look across the room to Largo who is busting out of his shirt with muscle and energy....and I make a mental note that I would never want to get on his 'bad side'. In case he ever actually spoke to me I would tell Largo the story about when I climbed with Tobin on Ten Karat and he virtually ruined my rope. A person like Tobin was worth having a shredded rope for.

Let us reasess for a second. I have now encountered four legends in the course of less than four hours in the Big Ditch. They all spoke to me, aside from Largo who was too scary -- observing him was best. By the end of the evening I went with a great friend from Washington State who introduced me to Ed Barry at the Mountain Room Bar. Mr. Barry taught me about "Sausalito Archie". I love the intonation Mr. Barry put in his stories about "Archie".

So from from 4 pm to 11 pm on a September day, I met the masters..... and they were sure stinking fit....

My votes for most fit are Bard, Barry and Tiffany Campbell who I witnessed folding tee-shirts in a Lander, Wyoming laundromat.

socalbolter - I remember a guy from Suicide, late 70's - mid 80's, named Kelly who could be your guy. I certainly would not call him a dwarf. I saw him around Idyllwild quite a bit, finally talked it up with him half way up the Long Climb. They were on a climb to the left. We were over half way up when a big downpour hit us. He was with a guy named Todd and another person, one of them had just had a baby or was going to have a baby. After a bit of conversation they bailed right, we aided the overhang in the rain. We got soaked, they were clearly the smarter party.

Yeah, Maldaly, Bobbi Bensman is ripped! 1st time I saw her flex her arm it looked like Arnold's severed arm in Terminator, nothing but muscle, bone, and sinew. Tony Yaniro is a very close 2nd.

To correct my reference above,

Bearamiah is Kim Carpenter (as noted by G_Gnome).
Dick, RIP, was: BearSquared ...

(then there was bear to the dodecahedron ... forget who that was, but they were all ripped, varying in degree and manner)

Probably explains why being 'ripped' perse is not that important to really climbing rock. He may have torn hell a half acre at the time, but the name doesn't ring a bell.

As a child she was a gymnast then at this point a national champ lifting phegnome =by this point it was way more than evident but boys wil be menshe was the best climber the top of the heap when in the zone
When men realized it they got the daggers out, or at least in their eyes,
Few if any could do what if she did, when she tried her best.
There are things she sent, that are still un-repeated.

And then
Well now , still crushing and crushingly ripped . . . and a mother!

Take a good look at the following picture analyze it for tone, and the facts are clear.
Of all of us, she was such a hard person. . . and easy going Cali` girl. . . cool
