I first climbed in 1972, but didn't start climbing alot until 1976;....I had heard about a group of climbers from San Diego who " climb everyday." True or not, they inspired me and burned into my brain that climbing everyday was what you did if you wanted to be a dedicated, honed , strong, experienced rock climber. I wanted to be like them. It was BVB, Mike Paul , Greg Epperson, and that gang. Bob even inspired me all the more that normal geeky long-haired dudes with glasses get the hot chicks;...Josilyn is as lovely as they come. The Van Belle's continue to inspire me today with their progressive and fun life-syle and attitude towards travel and children;.....Bravo and hip hip belay to the Van Belle's!

a bvb thread? how sweet. but entirely appropriate, given that i am, in fact, a FUKKING AMERICAN LEGEND, BISSHES!1!1!!

blinny -- hospital stints are nothin' new for me, but i've had one hell of a run the last two - three years. missing a lung from a bouldering accident; spinal stenosis, disk degeneration, and arthritis in my c-spine; and the big one -- no working lymphatic system in my left leg. plus a bunch of other odds and ends -- bipolar, transgender, the usual...

so, every year or two i wind up with a GNARLY septic blood infection that lands me in the ICU for a few days and then in a regular room for a few days. this has been going on regularly since i was about ten years old.

so there you have it -- dead man walking in a nutshell. but i always seem to bounce back pretty quick, 'cause, like, there's this dope new bouldering area i gotta check out....word on the street is it's fully damn SWOLE, babe.

Discounting the lung that is missing from a bouldering vs. bong accident, what's the story on all that other stuff - wear and tear? Not even sure what what these two are: 'spinal stenosis' and 'c-spine'. And how does you end up with no working lymphatic system in your left leg? Dirty needles or what? Bipolar I expect. And transgender? Well, you guys are all from LA, seemed to be into body sculpting at a young age, and C4 does get pretty crowded...

the neck -- wear and tear is the best guess. spinal stenosis is where your disks are basically gone, and what's left of 'em gets pushed into your spinal cord, pinching it off. that's happening with five of the disks in my neck (c-spine = cervial spine).

the doc, who is a climber, said "bob, yer neck's been rode hard and put up wet".

the leg -- born that way.

my body is slowly unravelling for sure, but i'm less than a year shy of fifty and i been climbing and partying pretty hard most of my life so it's bound to happen. i'm still a 24/7 climber though -- ya just gotta want it is all.....

Bob, thanks for the rundown.

Yeah, at 54 my doc said about the same thing with my shoulders and knees. I went in hoping he'd just fix the shoulder and instead he said it was more 'a matter of mileage' than fixing anything. He went on to say some folks with shoulders like mine get replacements, some take advil - I'm sticking with advil as he said the replacements won't take climbing...

Good luck with it all and hang in there. Still hoping to meet you and a few of the other folks before the first wheelchair bouldering olympics...

If I recollect, the lung was just partially collapsed for years and is currently diminished, not actually absent. Didn't you get that injury at Tahqitz that day with me and The Goon, wandering around by yourself gazing up with jaw agape until you slid on some ice, off a boulder in an aerial spin, and earning a broken heel in addition to the unnoticed-at-the-time lung injury?

Long ago, I ran into Bob and John Wasson at the roadside below El Cap. I went to say hello and asked about their plans. “West face,” offered a nervous Bob. “Today, it’s the Big Stone.” It was clearly the first live fire exercise in awhile for Bob. John was a seasoned veteran and calmly went about his preparations.

A jittery Bob is a hilarious Bob, and the slap schtick was not long in coming. Every time Sharon or Josilyn would try to be helpful with something like “Do you guys have enough food with you?” The response from Bob would be “Woman! When you are on the Big Stone, you ain’t got time for no snack food!”

“You done this thing, know anything about it?” asked Private Bob.

“Folks used to carry a hammer and a couple of short arrows for the first crux section,” I volunteered slyly with a wink to an already grinning John. The color and humor in Bob’s face left momentarily as his future suddenly became cloudy. "But that stuff has got to be fixed heads or something by now, you guys will be fine." Barbed wire, but only a short stretch and avoidable. The color and commentary returned.

“You guys set for rainwear?”

“Woman, when you are up on the Big Stone, you ain’t got time for any foul weather!”

Though he currently spends his days proudly and passionately throwing himself at the wee pebbles, when I think of BVB, I think Big Stone.......................... Bob Big Stone.

Hey Van Belle,

I always thought it was somewhat enviable (somewhat), the position you, Twilly, & Off held up there in Oly, what with bein' in strikin' distance of some natty alpine climbing terrain.

I much enjoyed my intro to that scene when 'Tusi & I came up to stutter up Rainier in '81. We got a taste of some of the regular antics; picking shrooms right off the Olympia College campus lawn, then melting our way up the Sunny Muffin tree behind the Twilly Meister. -Good tymes.

bvb,

You're da man, no doubt. Still pulling hard on stone and "cranking the way rads." Must be some secret formula in the life style you lead. Keep doing her.

And to top it off you crack me up :-))

OffWhite,

Nice to know bvb was a Scout. I just knew it. Behind that badboy image is a merit badge.

And if you guys truly went to Clairemont High here in San Diego, then yes it is the one and only "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." See Cameron Crowe's page; he grew up here in San Diego . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameron_Crowe

"Allmost Famous" was based on his time as a writer here in San Diego for Rolling Stone magazine, and the San Diego Sports Arena is the promanent concert venue where much of it in real life and in the movie took place.

bvb would make "Spicoli" proud.

BVB has got lots of merit badges. If you ask politely he will show them all to you. But a word of warning, just be impressed and complimentary and leave it at that. You won't find most of his badges on anybody else's chest or anywhere else for that matter because BVB is no ordinary scout and crafts his own, in secret (oops).

Above all else, never produce a scouting handbook in his presence asking to compare his badges to the official list. The infamous band camp incident was the last time this happened. I have a hard time imagining a trombone disappearing into another camper but BVB was strong and determined even back then.

Off White is also a scout and they can gang up on ya if you cross them. Off goes psycho if you improperly split firewood. He will glaze up and begin to mumble "you are a danger to yourself, tote and chip, tote and chip properly!" Then he comes at you with the maul!

Heh, Dragontail was good times, one of those rare climbs where Bob, a perpetual lead hog, demanded to be in the middle of the three man rope and wouldn't be budged. Here's a re-enactment from an incident on the actual climb:

The sun set as we summited, and partway down the dark headlampless descent we stopped to bivy, scrounging scraps of scrubby firs for a desparate little fire started with the remnants of Twilly's bandana. I've always suspected that boy sweated turpentine. Bob slept so close to the fire that the back of his borrowed rain jacket puddled and ran, and the white pile Scumbag brand pile jacket underneath developed a charred patch the size of a dinner plate. BVB came the closest of anyone I ever knew to embodying a personal nightmare vision of mine: the burning pile person.

The Dragontail rock fall exchange went like this:

Twilly shouts down from above, "Move it VanBelle, this place is a SHOOTING GALLERY" which is almost immediately followed by a volley of stones. Bob's pupils grow large as saucers and I'd swear he starts kicking up the couloir twice as fast.

nah, i'd had plenty of close calls with rockfall -- a few choice volleys on middle and the right side of the apron come to mind -- but that festering frozen chossheap was falling apart around us, and it was all funneling straight into the couloir. almost got bullseyed maybe 15 times in the 45 minutes it took to get outta that chute. damn, alpine climbing is so much fun!! and there's all that great bouldering in the talus fields!!

tarbaby, as we all know...

seasons come, and pass; there will always be cooking and cleaning to do; one thing leads to another, which leads to another; we live between two great darks, the first with an ending, the second without one, and the luckiest thing is having been born; we discovered the rocks, and each other, together; we live in a blur of hours and days, months and years, and believe it has meaning, despite the occasional fear we are slipping away with nothing completed, nothing to prove we existed. our search goes on for something we lost--a name, a family album that fell from its own small matter into another, a piece of the dark that might have been ours, we don't really know. say that each of us tries to keep busy, learning to lean down close and hear the careless breathing of earth and feel its available languor come over us, wave after wave, sending small tremors of stone through our brief, undeniable selves, into our memories, and beyond.

Yes stich, there was a whole segment of the black and white photo world that always printed full frame that way, show the edges both to frame the shot and as an expression of honesty: here's everything that I saw, no cropping trickery. I love that look. Sort of like ground up un-inspected first ascents of the photography game.

For some reason, scanning color slides in white plastic slidemounts, the edges all turn this fresh carhart brown, not the same effect at all.

I'll tell you, that picture of Watusi and bvb does something to me everytime I look at it. It reminds me of how young we all were...of innocence lost...of friends like George Manson who are no longer with us. I really can't explain why this particular picture does that to me. Sheesh, I'm getting all choked up.

Holy seperated at birth, is that The Amazing Jonathan on the right?

He is a magician/comedian whose original material is a breath of fresh air. His act is mostly composed of hi-jinks, interactions with audience members and a few legitimate magic tricks which often fail for comic effect. Check out the self-described "Freddy Krueger of Comedy" here:

First met ol boob around 74 or 75. My buddy Greg Scott picked me up in escondido at the parents house, on my way to J Tree for the first time. Michael Paul was already in Gregs 64 Ford falcon when they pulled into the drive, but who was the disturbing looking gentleman riding shotgun? The introduction went thusly;
GREG: "Ron, meet Bob"
RON: "Hi bob" (hand proffered but not taken)
BOB: "got anything to wash down these with?" (bob shows a fistful of valium)
RON: "Only this grapefruit juice" (Bob tosses back a half dozen little yellow pills and swills a full quart of warm, unsweetened grapefruit juice)

MP and I share the back seat on the ride to the monument as bob swims in and out of consciousness up front. MP torments bob by pulling on his ludicrous stocking cap until he gets a grunt and poorly aimed swat of the hand from bob, over and over. We arrive at JT and the wind is howling. Leaving our packs outside, we seek refuge in Guy Anderson's van. Gaylen Kirkwood is with him. Guy allows us to stay once we break out some herb, and we get nice and toasted. Then I remember that I have one of those jumbo hershey bars in my pack outside, so I go out and break off a chunk and give a piece to everyone in the van.

Bob finishes his chocolate, mumbles something about finding a place to sleep and heads into the night, only to return in a few minutes with more chocolate. When I look for the remainder of my candy bar the next day it is mysteriously gone. I held that against good ol bob till i got to know him better and found a kindred spirit. Hes brilliant, original and actually (tho you wouldnt know it) a good guy. Dont tell him I said that.

Ennyhoo, after many years of friendship and eventual acknowledgement of that oh so heinous crime, I found myself out at JT without food and starving. I asked bob if he had anything to eat and he gave me AN ENTIRE PUMPKIN PIE. No sh#t. Paid in full with interest and then some.

Fookin-A BVB is a legend...as I have said many times, right below yours truly on gods list of favorite people. Make it to Woodson on the 19th bobo, its been too long.
