I am starting a new discussion board and calling it SUPERBACKUP.

Basically the style will be the same as here. It will look the same and feel the same but the rules have changed: I love to moderate trolls.

Trolling will be tolerated until someone messages the moderators on our own thread (me and 9 others) who will initially warnings.

Posts will not be deleted by management.

Accounts will be suspended until people cool off.

Mad-Hatters will only be allowed to post x number of times a week.

Everything will be done by vote, 10 people will run the forum, who will in turn work for the forum members and not the other way around.

Posters will own their own content and be allowed to change their posts or delete them at any time, unless someone quotes them. When responding it will be a good idea to quote what you are responding to.

Each member will be screened to keep spammers off.

Only climbers and their friends allowed.

I think I can run a forum with minimal interaction, not as stringent as gunks.com. What the hell happened to that thing anyway?

The idea here is to create together, historical content which will have eternal significance and having backup, will never nowise be deleted. The forum will have a new MO.

smash, Smash, SMASH! - Songify This: "No matter what you've done you deserve respect, even if you make mistakes, your lovable, doesn't matter your looks, skills, or age or size or anything, your worthwhile, no one can ever take that away from you, your worthwhile, no one can ever take that away from you."

This is what I mean about too much moderation:

It died with the 90's. I'm pretty sure your ranting, lack of punctuation, and flat out take over of many threads lead to it's demise as well. Plus, it was run from Chris from the GCC. That combo was toxic. Maybe if he had ten jurors to help mitigate the sh#t show it would still be around. But most likely not.

Gunks.com was being migrated to a new version of the same, everything was in the process of being moved over. (I had nothing to do with it's demise, rather I spammed the spammers, and I still have some copies of the threads.) Then all of a sudden, seemingly, nothing! I asked the moderator to sell it to me, he just sat on it.

For f*#ks sake man go talk to Chris. He still owns the domain. Make him an offer to buy it then run it however you see fit. The site always sucked but maybe you'll change that.

Just got a response from Gunks.com. "not for sale. 6 more months of grad school, then back to the Valley." I suppose you should consider all those posts deleted. Perhaps he will make a book out of it and sell it. The TOS on these forms are that once you post you do not own the post anymore, right? I would like to change that, and this way the person who posts can be responsible for photos.

The problem with this proposed site, as with several other "history archives" that have been proposed/started, is that the principle people involved have a public persona that provides no sense of credibility regarding the nature of the moderation.

By stark contrast, SuperTopo has become what it is organically and without some "cause" that the forums needed to reflect.

I think that the fact that a NEW sense of "cause" has emerged around here, and that it's lawyer-driven, is the basis of the sense of betrayal among many long-time participants.

Good luck with the effort, but I won't bother with it.

All I am attempting to provide is a place where things don't disappear, as they have with gunks.com or now with supertopo. I have a friend who had all his posts deleted who tells of the massive obliteration of route and area information of others as well, without warning and seemingly without reason. It will only work if people gain an interest in it, which may never happen. All I want to do is create the possibility for this to happen in some kind of context where important contributions are insured to remain. What I think important would not count in this case. The ground rules need to change for this to take place. I trust you understand my concern. The goal of the project is preservation, something I did not think was important until now. It does not seem to me that WideFetish Forum is geared with the same intrests, maybe I am wrong? If someone has a better idea in mind (rather then do nothing) I would like to know what it is.

Now if I thought I had all the answers ... you really don't want a smart guy do you? The dumber the better.

OK, still have a lot of trip reports to port... but I've got the site basically up and running for my personal repository:
https://nutagain.org/

It would be reasonably straight-forward to expand this type of design to be multi-user. The only reason I'm not offering it up now is because I'm not willing to sponsor the cost of the server infrastructure (although that would be pretty modest in the scheme of things... this is only a virtual server with 1 vCPU and 32GB storage, but it could scale up for a few hundred dollars per month to be a pretty beefy server that could handle the load of this community.

I am lost. Where are the different newsgroup software platforms one can buy? What about usenet? And then I just discovered what alt groups are, so it looks like moderation is always necessary. I don't want to monitor a newsgroup, but I would help get it going. Over all it looks impossible. At this point I am just going to think about it. Does anyone have any ideas? As creepy as supertopo is, I think they have been doing a lot of work all of which none of us has paid a penny for.

Sierra climber sounds like a good idea, but now i think the bigger problem is what software to use, for me anyway. And another thing, look at this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/borh6u/cats_playing_on_the_ceiling/

Do you know what that means? It means that someone has been moderating supertopo and that's scary. If there is no moderator all hell breaks loose and I am nave to those kinds of alt threads. How much work is this going to be?

I like the feel of this board below, what do you think? I hate that reddit and facebook, don't like the photo deal at the index.

I also do not like the posting on your own page idea, I would rather dump into a topic then a person. Topics are what its all about, can you imagine if all this junk on supertopo was in facebook? What a mess that would be.

[I am not so sure I want to do this, it might use up a lot of time.]

Don if you are going to try to keep this going you need to negotiate with Chris to get the supertopo.com domain. Maybe link to ads for his topos and books. If you start over from scratch, I don't know if you would get the same group of people, which is what is irreplaceable. It's a concentration of US climbers who developed the sport. Cali centric, yes, but lots of Coloradans and I think it mainly reflects the demographics of American climbing in the past. If it's too focused on Yosemite, it may be because for many people including me, it gave us the most memorable climbing experiences.

I also had many memorable experiences in Yosemite and it definetly was the place that prepared me for my alpine climbing.
Yosemite is still a major, major area, especially for bigwall, but it’s influence has lessened in the last few decades. The climbing world has exploded, not only in the number of climbers but also in the number of venues.
When I first started climbing the Gunks, Tetons and Yosemite were the “must get to” climbing areas...sure has changed.

I have a feeling that this board is outdated and has some problems.

It would probably be better to start over with a well supported board that feels good, not like craigslist forms or reddit.

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk form type looks okay if it is supported software. And, the advertisements would have to go only at the top and not in the middle of the threads.

A big problem is spam and how to eliminate it.

I'll ask if they will sell a link.

Jud observed: "you guys are no help with domain names"

I don't think there is an answer, the answer appears to be found in imperfect choices.

Buy Supertopo? Maybe later. Don't think the American ego can do that, look at gunks.com, that guy is going down with the ship all hands on board.

vBulletin regularly and automatically backs up their newsgroups, as well as it is downloadable to your computer. That means that anyone can have a copy of the whole site. VBulletin is literally the largest and most popular board program available. Yahoo!, NASA, nVidia, Skype, AMD, Capitol Records, Virgin Records, Warner Bros. Records, and SmartFTP), those are off the top of my head. If anyone is familiar with vBulletin let me know.

Who is interested in maintaining and moderating such a site? I don't think it is a good idea to do it alone.
