This is an account of the situation:

"Sources indicate that multiple casualties have occurred at the Masjid Al Noor near Deans Ave and Palazzo Ln due to a mass shooting. The specific number of deaths and injuries at the mosque have not been initially released, although media sources have said that between nine and 30 people were killed at the two mosques, the other mosque being the Linwood Masjid on Linwood Ave near Buckleys Rd. Dozens of others have reportedly been injured. Police have arrested at least four suspects, although additional suspects remain at large. Christchurch residents have been advised to remain indoors as the search continues. Police have also advised the public to avoid all mosques across the country as a precaution. Follow police instructions and avoid the area."

I left Christchurch for Blenheim in March 2011 after a major earthquake killed around 160 people. While I'm obviously physically safe, my thoughts are chaotic at best

I think there is value in reading the manifesto.

For ordinary people, it is impossible to conceive of such hate and vile thinking.

Reading the Unabomber's manifesto was enlightening to me. Not in that I learned anything from him, but could further appreciate the extremes of thinking that we are not ordinarily exposed to. I was quite astonished at how significant parts of his writing were based in nature worship, which I would have thought would have been the farthest thing possible from his cause.

What's wrong with Unabomber manifesto??
He was crazy to actually bomb Computer Scientists...should have been protesting, publishing and campaigning instead, but he got everything else right in his writings. His ideas will only prove themselves right over time, more and more with every decade. His view of technological "progress" and modern society was right on.

I think there is value in reading the manifesto.

I agree... Rather than attempting to bury these cowardly acts (which is impossible these days), there is definitely value in analysis of the data that remains. Instead of letting the imagination and propaganda run wild to twist these evil acts into valor, hold out the actual behavior in the bright sunlight to wither.

International fallout from Trump’s dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric...words do matter.I did two slide shows in Christchurch last December. NZ is a beautiful country with a citizenry that, on the whole, seemed to me more enlightened about the world and better educated than the average American.
Unfortunately, American culture is pervasive and when our “leader” routinely preaches racist and anti immigrant rhetoric the effects rebound.

I’m really sorry. This sucks. But there are lots of good people fighting against this racist bullsh#t.

Read the manifesto if you want some firsthand understanding of the nonsense that goes on in other people’s minds and how that nonsense gets there.

Or don’t.

Let other people who have read it translate it for you, and then believe that they’re telling you the truth about it. Maybe read the Wikipedia translation of it or the New York Times translation or the CNN translation or the Breitbart translation or the 8chan translation, and believe what they tell you, believe that they’re telling you the truth, believe that they haven’t biased reality in order to bias your understanding.

Or just read it and form your own beliefs. It’s always up to us how we want to form our own beliefs, and we often trust other people to do it for us.

Other people do that too - they just trust different people. And now Trump is our president while we dig ourselves deeper into our gerrymandered partisan informational divide. If we don’t want to contribute to that, then don’t.

hey there say, Avery...

as to this quote of yours:

Not everyone who utters those words are insincere. I'd sooner have them than not.

thank you for noting that...
sometimes, it is the only that a human, can let another one, or,
group of folks know, that 'even if we can't do anything' we DO
have this option to give up our time, hours, if needs be, to
pray--

for whatever kind of 'higher up' help, can come...
we do not understand why it was 'not there' during the
terrible hate, but, we can still pray for those folks...

true-story, elsewhere, in usa:

there is a young teen, whose body was burned 95 + and, was
expected to die...

she is still in the hospital, a year later...
nothing we can do to heal or help her get well...

however, prayers for all over the USA, have made her
mom 'able to hang in there' through all this...
it MEANS to world to her, she has stated OVER and over:

just to hear that
'strangers' are actually taking time to do this,
and-- to let her know...

yes, it can mean something... and more so-- we many never know:
but, it can do something, unseen, if not know, later...

the girl has improved and is starting to really heal...
skin grafts are growing better...
she can sometimes eat better...
she might be able to walk, after more months of therapy...
after a whole year...
though there is still fear of infections...

she doesn't want to just die-- which grabbed her a few times...
she loves her family and wants to go home...

how DO folks get through tragedy... ??
like this shooting, fires... earthquakes, ?? anything...

we do not know...
but-- it takes MANY VOICES... many hands...

whatever little 'pittance' any human can give...
it is better to give-- than not...

hope to see you in an email avery...

do you still have it... or, try facebook...
prayers for your country and ours...
and others, the world-through...

Mr Aziz
That's a pretty bad-ass story.

There's a video interview with a few more details made clear that's worth watching. The gunman saw Aziz had a gun - and when he tossed it through the window of the car, the gunman probably thought it was a bullet that had shattered the glass - and that was the end of the gunman's shooting spree - he took off.

Some math suggests this guy lived in Kabul until he was 20-ish, or about the time of the height of the Taliban.

Something tells me he's probably seen worse guys than this wonderbread gunman.

"The shootings occurred at Linwood Mosque and Al Noor Mosque around the time of Friday prayers. The latter is where the vast majority of people were killed. According to the New Zealand Herald, the attacker or attackers left the Linwood Mosque after one Friday prayer goer returned fire with a rifle or shotgun. In addition to the 49 dead, at least 48 patients were being treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital, Canterbury District Health Board Chief Executive David Meates said in a statement."

Trump is driving this

He’s certainly helping to move the needle in the wrong direction, but racism and violence have been around for a long time, and Trump didn’t elect himself.

Reporting is that the guy Wahabzadah who chased the shooter off lived in Australia for 27 years but then went to New Zealand because of racism in Australia. We ‘mericans are only part of the puzzle - we may not have as “great” an affect on other people’s lives as we imagine we do.

Early reporting was saying Trump was referenced multiple times in the 74 page manifesto. Not hearing that anymore.

Right, we hear stuff, and we form reactions and beliefs based on what we hear. How many times was Trump actually factually referenced in the manifesto? Do we know? And if we don’t know, are we going to let our not knowing interfere with forming beliefs based on what we heard, and then prevent us from trying to influence other people’s beliefs based on our secondhand knowledge? Like racism and violence, that might be a problem Trump didn’t create.

I'm not asking that. I'm tired of all the killing and the guns. I want my daughter to live in a better world, but I see so much hate being stirred up. Of course I don't blame Trump personally for what's happening, but he sets the tone for discourse and that tone has become really divisive. When the most powerful man in the world, which is what the president is, is amoral, uncaring, incurious, and ego driven there are effects. Robert L: In balance, it would be an overstatement to assert that Trump is driving this. But he and his supporters certainly contribute something.

We're all contributing something.

Every society clamps down on individuality and autonomy--or at least what seems to be individuality and autonomy. It is difficult to find any society or culture that did not end up pitting the individual against the collective.

I don't know about every culture, but the Tibetan culture (prior to their explusion, at least) was the only one that was oriented to death and dying because it was believed that at the time of death one could become liberated by negotiating (staying awake) through the bardos.

The manifesto is one giant troll. If you're not familiar with meme culture, it'll go over your head. The only reason he didn't to the floss dance in court was due to handcuffs.

His aim is "accelerationism". He wants his act to trigger an over-reaction by the government (which is already happening) which will trigger more people to be anti-government and anti-immigrant. He chose to use guns instead of explosives for this reason. He's quite explicit about it, and his plan is working.

The "alt-right" is, so far as I can tell, primarily comprised of young men who can't find gainful employment or meaning in the modern West. They know they're being f*#ked in the ass, but don't know why or by whom. Many see the world as irrevocably tainted and headed toward a worse state of affairs and the current political process as part of the problem because they have no influence, thus the only way to affect change is to trigger a war where people see each other primarily in terms of race and thus the white nations will 'win' due to superior numbers and firepower.

Not agreeing with it; just my analysis.

OK, so I did a bit of research and the video does not show anyone blaming Chelsea Clinton for the shooting. They're criticizing her for piling on Ilhan Omar alongside the 'right':

It's always good to remember that we rarely ever see the events which precede or follow a video clip, or what the camera isn't showing, or the context.

in regards to Ballo’s second to last post above: i agree with most of what you are saying... however i disagree with your opening argument that the fUcked up human’s “manifesto” is one giant troll... i dunno... while there are certainly elements of that in there i wouldn’t go near that far... a warped sense of humour wrapped in internet culture, sure... but continuous trolling?

i think he states his [fUcked up] case quite clearly: he believes white euro descendants are superior. he believes that non-whites have higher birth rates. he believes that we should respect the earth and that overpopulation is antithetical to that aim and as such terms himself an eco-fascist. he believes that due to the intersection between the above three points there will be an inevitable race based war in the future. he believes that by his jump starting that war and being a martyr he will have some kind of legacy. he believes that by using guns in his attack he will be able to sow discord in the u.s. which will hopefully lead to an accelerated second amendment based balkanization...

pretty coherent, as far as i saw... [though i must admit i skimread the last two thirds pretty rapidly.]

and, as Barro mentioned, so far, specifically with regards to the last point, pretty successful.

and so, in the same way that if the mass of men actually read osama bin laden’s initially stated goals [which were to bankrupt the u.s. through endless wars due to the u.s.’s involvement in the middle east, generally and israel, specifically] it might have saved a whole shIt ton of lives and money, by maybe leading the mass of men into not backing the same bull shIt reactionary response that whatever the fUcked up human boogeyman du hour hoped we would take...

in the same way, we would be well served to respond here, as wel: by first considering what is actually being said.

imo, the problem, in the contemporary world at least, is never “the left”, or “the right”, or “the alt-right” or “the eco-fascist left”, or “al-qaeda” or “the taliban” or “antifa” or whatever the new overhyped and completely overstated boogeyman du hour is.

the problem is and will continue to be that there are both a few individuals who don’t have power who are so sure of their beliefs that they are willing to kill for them. and in response there are a few individuals who are in power who are willing to use those deaths to justify agendas that involve killing more folks and that whose actual motivation is in most contemporary cases incidental to the originally stated agenda...

as long as the layperson refuses to look at this shIt for themselves our blood and life energy will continue to be the grease under the sledge of both the major and minor powers, as they use each other to meet their own ends.

it would be sweet if someday the mass of men learned to step out of the way...

so that i’m clear: that the press is, for the first time that i can recall, generally not publishing his face or the video of the actual shootings or his name is a step forward... yes, i understand that those will inevitably get around and if that’s something a person thinks will add to their life by seeing, then so be it.

otoh, this very strange attempt by the press to both “not link” to his direct words while [lying by omission and] telling us “what he says in the manifesto” is as mind boggling as most of trump’s “don’t believe your eyes, believe what i’m telling you”, bullshIt...

strange world. good luck out there.

yeah, fair enough. for me the challenge in using the word troll in this situation is that we are talking about fifty dead and that as far as i understand with regards to posting info on the interwebs the word “troll” generally means posting bullshIt in order to gain an emotional reaction... in this specific case he definitely did some of the latter [the navy seal copy pasta and the candace owens horse shIt for example] and he also, in the traditional metaphoric sense of fishing for a response [and in the same way that osama bin laden “trolled” for a response] did that, as well, with both his act and much of his writing...

i just think given the multiple meanings of the word and due to the way that a bunch of the media has dismissed the bulk of his writing as a “troll” [in the contemporary emotionally manipulative way] i have an aversion to using it with regards to all of his writing even though in a more traditional sense the whole thing is exactly that... since we’ve made it this far down this pedantic highway i’d suggest his writing and act are a “provocation” that we collectively get to choose how we are going to react to... so far i remain generally disappointed with the bull shIt that is being said from the larger bully pulpits...

it’s a fine grain discussion for sure and ultimately with regards to the meaning underneath our words, i suspect we are in agreement.

Robert, the problem is the only way to disarm people is with other guns, and the government's record isn't exactly stellar. This web site gives a conservative estimate of 262,000,000 people killed by their own government (democide) in the 20th century alone:

https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/20TH.HTM

I believe the estimate for criminal murders (most not committed with a firearm) during this time is about 20mil which would be about 7% of the total murders.

So which should I be more concerned about? The 7% or the 93%?

Now don't get me wrong, I don't believe in some stupid Hollywood Rambo character taking on the entire government. That's a strawman. I just don't want the government or a crime syndicate to have an absolute monopoly on lethal firepower. I'm far more concerned about various agencies buying military equipment than my neighbor. I am no Trump supporter, but this sort of thing is really rare, right wing hate killings. In the last three weeks 120 or so Christians were killed in Nigeria by Fulani Muslim militants and Boko Harem. The Fulani Group also destroyed 43 homes. In Africa, these groups, made up mostly of young black males, have been killing and raping with impunity.

The killing in New Zealand cannot be predicted; these lone nut cases can spring up anywhere in the world. But the groups in Africa can be identified and fought. These groups will kill far more innocent people within the next year than these right wing nut jobs will do in the next ten years, gun control or not.

Back in 2000, the British Special Forces carried out an operation know as Operation Barras against one of these groups, to free their people. They killed about 25, captured around 40-50, and 300 more surrendered within two weeks. They lost one soldier in the raid.

Our population is getting so dense, the people that can't handle the crowds are going insane and acting out. They need their space and that is getting hard to find anymore. This is one of my big concerns. I have been scuba diving all my life and the oceans were healthy when I was young. Now, everything is getting a coating of algae from the nitrate build up. I know from experience with fish tanks, once the algae starts building up, a total collapse of the system follows shortly after. Granted, this is a big system. The solution to pollution used to be dilution. We have run out of places to dilute with. I shudder when I think about our kids. The earth can't handle this many people. We are like a cancer to it with our pollution. I believe someone like this person sees it also and acts out in a way they think may help. Totally dillusional and wrong on every level but you can't have logic with an insane person. They have no shame to logic with. "Some people you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. I don't like it anymore than you."

I love everyone, I love immigrants and I want the best for everyone. I would never step on someone to get ahead myself. The sad truth is there are a lot of people who would. That in itself is the crux. We need to have a deep discussion about whether we want a utopia for everyone or we all want to try to get ahead and to hell with our planet. If we don't all come together through hard work and sacrifice, we will all ultimately perish. Cortez says a decade, I think we have more time but the population needs to stabilize and reduce to a sustainable level where there is enough to go around without poisoning the planet. I am horrified that I have this in common with the person who just acted out this horrendous deed. I am horrified that I spoke to this shortly before this person acted out. This is not how we come together for a greater cause.

I hope the premonition I had as a child does not come true. Many of my premonitions have come true which is scary to me. As a child I drew a replica of the four horsemen by Albrecht Dürer as my only and scarily good work of art. Peace Out.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's address to Parliament:

https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/19-03-2019/we-cannot-know-your-grief-but-we-can-walk-with-you-at-every-stage/

Part of her remarks:
The 15th of March will now forever be a day etched in our collective memories. On a quiet Friday afternoon a man stormed into a place of peaceful worship and took away the lives of 50 people.

That quiet Friday afternoon has become our darkest of days.

But for the families, it was more than that. It was the day that the simple act of prayer – of practising their Muslim faith and religion – led to the loss of their loved ones lives.

Those loved ones, were brothers, daughters, fathers and children.

They were New Zealanders. They are us.

And because they are us, we, as a nation, we mourn them.

We feel a huge duty of care to them. And we have so much we feel the need to say and to do.

One of the roles I never anticipated having, and hoped never to have, is to voice the grief of a nation.

At this time, it has been second only to securing the care of those affected, and the safety of everyone.

And in this role, I wanted to speak directly to the families. We cannot know your grief, but we can walk with you at every stage. We can. And we will, surround you with aroha, manaakitanga and all that makes us, us. Our hearts are heavy but our spirit is strong.

The United Nations Commission on Human Rights, considers the recanting of a person's religion a human right legally protected by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights:

The Committee observes that the freedom to 'have or to adopt' a religion or belief necessarily entails the freedom to choose a religion or belief, including the right to replace one's current religion or belief with another or to adopt atheistic views ... Article 18.2[12] bars coercion that would impair the right to have or adopt a religion or belief, including the use of threat of physical force or penal sanctions to compel believers or non-believers to adhere to their religious beliefs and congregations, to recant their religion or belief or to convert.[13]

Interesting listen as part of the 3/22/19 npr show On the Media from Kathleen Belew about why speaking of and thinking about events such as the CHCH shooting as acts of a 'lone gunman' potentially both trivializes the worldwide movement that creates these perpetrators, and plays into the actual designs of that movement to keep its scope, methods, and goals opaque.

https://www.npr.org/podcasts/452538775/on-the-media

Although OTM tends to veer somewhat left even for me, I found Ms. Belew's take thoughtful and convincing.
