I know this is an off topic thread. It is not about climbing, but also it is not about politics, nor is it an Emergency.

I already sent a similar tome to friends and family via email, two of which are also on this forum, so Johnny Rotten and Anders, bear with me and the duplication.

Libraries. Thank the heavens for them. In the UK they are phasing them out, falling prey to the thought of Amazon, digital "information" and the like. I do not know about the US or elsewhere, but here in Ireland they are trying to 'build' them, to attract more library goers/users.

I took out American Graffiti, a film I have not seen for years, many years. a great film in my opinion.

Cruising the main. In Walnut Creek, Main Street was THE cruising spot. Concord and other towns and cities had some cruising but WC/Creektown attracted cruisers from all around Contra Costa County. To be sort of stereotyping (apologies but...) we had low riders, greasers, jocks and even left-wing hippies (gosh, did I just write all of those stereotypes? How 'culture' can be pervasive), from all around.

I was mainly a backseat cruiser with older friends and my late brother Mac as well, as by the time I got my driving licence (1972) I was past cruising. But it was the scene on Friday and Saturday nights.

Ah, nostalgia. The "good ole' days".

But, what were the good old days? To each generation they mean something different.

I have written this before, but in researching for my screenplay (yet to be produced), The Kalems, as I was in the National Library of Ireland, reading back from a 1909 edition of The Kerryman newspaper, it struck me, the good old days.

Here was a letter to the editor complaining about "the shiftless young men, hanging out on the bridge drinking stout. Doing no good."

Fast forward (or rewind) to any 'older' generation complaining about the 'vagaries' (yes a play on words) of youth. You can go back to ancient Greek and Chinese times to find the same... complaints, remarks, call then what you want.

Funny, isn't that. Sometimes our minds close as we get older, sometimes they open to new ideas. We are all capable of close minds, or open minds. It is a choice.

Back to the film, I think it should rate as one of the all-time great flicks about Americana.

No apology necessary. Most of those stereotypes at my HS drank and smoked pot.

What’s a “greaser”?

Greasers were hoodlums that used grease on their hair in the 50's.

Malemute, I love that passage.

Yeah, it was not my intention to ruffle feathers. Firstly, I wanted to comment on a what I think is a fine film addressing some of the teenage angsts. Did I just write that?

Secondly, the cruising culture. I was a part of that.

And thirdly, it is an enjoyable film to watch.

And what is a greaser? Too much petroleum jelly. Brylcreem may have been a better choice.

EDIT

I really did not want to respond, as it seems to give him a hard on (apology for the vulgarity) but Reilly, you are such an as#@&%e.

EDIT

I guess the "a" word is censored, shall I put it differently.

Reilly, you seem to have your fans here.I am not one of them. You are as deluded as Trump, no surprise there, your ego is bigger than your brain.

There , I responded, that is what you want, recognition. To soothe your little ego. Look at your previous posts you come across as a mister know it all.

Full of sh#t and beans. Just don't fart in my direction.

I know Apogee, but is he really just funning? Look at his previous posts, the guy thinks he is a superstar.

Apogee, I rarely contribute on this forum anymore, it is really the only forum I contribute to, truthfully, perhaps that is so why I am so annoyed at some of the BS.

I perhaps should hold my head in hands and counsel myself better.

Everyone thinks they're a frickin' superstar in this place. I'm the super-est, as far as I'm concerned- people just haven't realized it yet. But they will. I'm a patient superstar.

Slippery back, and laugh. That's the key to this place. And maybe life, in general.

I'm out.

P.S.
I really liked American Graffiti.

Cruising Van Nuys Boulevard in the late 70's was always considered a "must-do" - even for us Ventura County kids.

Otherwise it was cruising up and down Main Street in Venture until you either found out where a party was happening, hooked up with some Surf Chicks or ran out of gas.

Etymology of the term "greaser" The word "greaser" originated in the late 19th century in the United States as a derogatory label for poor laborers, specifically those of Mexican or Italian descent.

Since then it has meant many things. And, pretty much all of them derogatory.

I couldn't even watch through the trailer for American Graphitti...
The period "Americana" piece I really liked was Badlands with Martin Sheen, showing 1958. I guess it's city life vs. rural thing.

Loved those old style dinner's(sp?). Funny how the old cool styles went out of fashion to be replaced with the latest cool, hip, trendy, fashionable, in vogue... if it's old, throw it out mentality. Guilty as charged. Now I have to throw myself out with the trash. ha ha.

Edit#1 American Hot Wax. Wiki: Although director Floyd Mutrux created a fictionalized account of Freed's last days in New York radio by utilizing real-life elements outside of their actual chronology, the film does accurately convey the fond relationship between Freed, the musicians he promoted, and the audiences who listened to them.

I thought it was A train’s engine that gleamed..:

I’m the same age as Patrick & lived a few miles away from him, saw Amercann Graffitti in 11th grade... we were going, with the Russiam Club to see Crime and Punishment ( with Peter Lorre as Raskolnikov!) but it was sold out, so we went to see this new movie.... it changed our vernacular! “ Who cut the chees,” “ shotgun!”

My friends used to cruise the Main in Walnut Creek too. As a Toyota driver it wasn’t really
My scene
But
I went along a couple times....

I went to my freshman year of high school (1970) in a Chicago suburb, Park Forest, you were either s Greaser, jock, or hippy!

We Moved to Moraga ( a much more average less Uber class place than it is now) Ca the next summer. The scene was totally different, much more clique integrated but much whiter. There were hippies with GTO’s! ( pronounced “Goats”) Jocks smoked pot even! No designated greasers. We didn’t use the term yet, but it was a school of stoners!

Emerging stoner culture...
The Grateful Dead, then known as the Warlocks, played at my high School, Campolindo, a few years before I got there.....

Edit; sigh, I will Always have a thing for Sissy Spacek!

Mr. Starkweather had the doo, but I do not know if he had enough grease to be a greaser.

Caril kept it clean.

Had my paper route in those days and followed it closely in the headlines.

Was Charlie a hodad? I have no idea, but he neither surfed nor climbed.

Garbage (there is a break called Garbage off Pt. Loma) and killing was "his thing".

Before she met her downfall, Fugate lived with her family in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her sister Barbara was dating Starkweather’s friend and introduced the two in 1956 during a night out. Shortly after meeting, Fugate returned home one night to find that Starkweather had shot and killed her stepfather and her mother.

Was it a car club? Well, not really. More of a car-stealing kind of deal.

At 19 years old, Starkweather was “a swaggering good-for-nothing in blue jeans and a black motorcycle jacket.” A former garbage man known for yelling “go to hell” at strangers, [4] he was “stocky” and “well-built” but “small” at 5’5”. His normally red hair was now black with shoe polish. He wore rimless glasses [5] and black-and-white cowboy boots. [6] A James Dean wannabe, Starkweather was a rebel whose cause had devolved into instilling fear and dissipating his own smoldering rage.

Mathis' wheels, a Fairlane, had an eight track deck with speakers on the rear platform.

His dad's Impala had reverbs in the rear speakers.

The Main Drag was West 17th and went exactly one mile each way, Vernon's at the west end on 16th, and Cecil's Golden Chicken at the other end.

Two lanes in both directions meant a lot of traffic after Friday night football and on Saturday date nights.

The Flames rode low and drove slow, only occasionally throwing someone a "moon."

Interesting side note

Guns were pretty uncommon in 1962 and thereabouts

The family killers in my town were bludgeoneers

For example

... Inside the home were the dead bodies of his family—his parents, Henry and Joan, his 15-year-old sister, Ellen, and his eight-year-old brother, Mark.Henry had been beaten with a steel rod and stabbed 20 times. The rest of the family had been bludgeoned to death. When the police arrived, Raymond greeted them with a casual “hi.”
