When I was in the Coast Guard I was expected to go out in life-threatening conditions, just as any other military personnel are asked to do in combat situations. Things haven't changed since my days, except now the Coast Guard is expected to do it without pay. Rationalize this for me, my fellow taconions.

Pelosi shuts down Trump on State of the Union
Trump said he would likely pursue an ‘alternative’ to delivering State of the Union in the House chamber.
By HEATHER CAYGLE, JOHN BRESNAHAN and REBECCA MORIN 01/23/2019 12:28 PM EST Updated 01/23/2019 05:13 PM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/23/trump-said-he-still-plans-to-deliver-state-of-the-union-address-on-jan-29-1121068

Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday officially blocked President Donald Trump from giving the State of the Union address in the House, an unprecedented move that underscores how bitter partisan tensions have paralyzed Washington.

Trump and Republican lawmakers blasted Pelosi for her decision, accusing her of engaging in a cheap political stunt designed simply to embarrass the president.

Yet the California Democrat — with the support of her colleagues — isn't backing down, and Trump is now looking for an alternative to an address on the House floor.

It's the latest chapter in an increasingly personal tit-for-tat between the two national leaders, and maybe the lowest point in a political crisis that grinds on with no end in sight. At the moment, the only thing that Trump and Pelosi can agree on is they can't sit in the same room for an hour, even if it's the cavernous House chamber.

"Now Nancy Pelosi, or 'Nancy,' as I call her, she doesn't want to hear the truth and she doesn't want to hear, more importantly, the American people [to] hear the truth," Trump told reporters after the speaker's announcement that she would not let the speech proceed. "It's a disgrace."

Trump then hinted that he may give his address at another location. "We'll do something in the alternative. We'll be talking to you about that at a later date," Trump added.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump insisted in a letter to Pelosi that the annual speech should proceed as planned inside the House chambers. Pelosi had tried to effectively scuttle the event because of what she called security concerns, specifically the prospect of forcing employees not being paid to protect the Capitol that night.

"It would be so very sad for our Country if the State of the Union were not delivered on time, on schedule, and very importantly, on location!" Trump wrote.

Within hours, Pelosi responded in a letter of her own: Not in my House.

No-one can stop this guy from flapping his lips. But you can decide if you'll let him in the House. Go, Nancy!

I watch this drama from afar, listening to Lyric FM (classical and then some), I see the events unfold.

I was never a Pelosi fan, so to speak, nor Hillary. But Nancy (for once the Trump scumbag cannot make up a puerile name for her), is calling his tune.

This is what America is about. The presidency does not rule. It is not a monarchy. How 800,000 people in Wyoming can have more sway than 39 million plus people in California, does not make sense.

Remember, as I have mentioned before I live abroad, for much of my life, but my family also came to 'America' in 1640. Josiah Bartlett, no not the West Wing TV figure of Martin Sheen, btw, I have never seen the series, but the real Josiah Bartlett, a physician and statesman from New Hampshire, he is in my family tree. He was the second person to sign the Declaration.

America is great, not because of Donald Trump. It is great because of all of us.

EDIT

I do not need blow-ins like Werner (we are all stoopid, except him) or a Russian bot like Lituya to tell me when up is down and vice versa.

Trump announced late on Wednesday that he would delay the address until after the shutdown is over.

President Donald Trump ended the skirmish over the timing of his State of the Union address Wednesday night by agreeing to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's request to delay the speech until after the longest running shutdown in history ends, a reversal of his previous vow to show up even if he did not have a formal invite.

Interesting development. We'll see what the next steps are.

From the 'Alexandria' thread:

"It's now apparent that Trump and his cronies are prolonging the shutdown because they intend to destroy numerous federal agencies, once and for all. "

A few weeks ago, the thought occurred to me that part of Trump's hardline position was another rationale besides his wall...that shutting down the gov't would make plenty of far right conservatives more than happy as a way of 'starving the beast'.

His base is happy because he's seen fighting for his wall...the far right likes to see the gov't as small as possible...and the American public sees that the pain of smaller gov't is more tolerable than they thought. Win-win-win for Trump & co.

An outstanding editorial in the Washington Post this morning by Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen on how Trump's shutdown is a frontal attack on science, medicine, the arts, humanities, history, and intellectual capital in this country.

"The cost of such attacks on knowledge production and dissemination goes beyond dollars, however. It threatens the very foundation of democratic life that has been central to the founding, and flourishing, of the country."

A must read.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says he doesn't "really quite understand why" federal workers who have missed paychecks due to the partial government shutdown don't just take out loans to cover the gap.

When asked in a CNBC interview on Thursday about reports that federal workers are going to homeless shelters or seeking food assistance, the billionaire investor said: "Well, I know they are and I don't really quite understand why, because as I mentioned before, the obligations that they would undertake, say borrowing from a bank or a credit union, are in effect federally guaranteed, so the 30 days of pay that some people will be out is no real reason why they shouldn't be able to get a loan against it."

The comments from the commerce secretary came after a senior economic adviser to President Donald Trump compared the shutdown to a vacation.
Federal employees should not have been put in their present situations from the start.

Trump’s Plan to Fund Wall Fails, Two Republican Senators Defect
By JACK CROWE
January 24, 2019 3:31 PM
https://www.nationalreview.com/news/trumps-plan-to-fund-wall-fails-two-republican-senators-defect/

The Senate voted down Thursday a Republican-backed spending bill, which would have ended the longest running government shutdown in history and allocated $5.7 billion for the construction of President Trump’s long-promised wall on the souther border.

The bill was defeated 50-47 largely along party lines, though Republican Senators Mike Lee of Utah, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke with their respective parties.

A Democrat-backed stop-gap spending bill that would have funded the government through February 8 without allocating any additional funds for border security also failed to pass the Senate Thursday afternoon.

The competing bills were widely-considered test votes, as the White House and the leaders of both parties were aware in advance that both bills lacked the bipartisan support required to clear the 60-vote threshold.

Mindful that Republicans lacked the seven Democratic votes needed to pass their spending bill, the White House reportedly viewed Thursday’s vote as an opportunity to gauge support for President Trump’s shutdown strategy within the Republican caucus. The Trump-backed bill granted a temporary, three-year asylum to immigrants brought to the country illegally as children in exchange for border wall funding.

The Democrats’ stopgap spending bill, which lacked border wall funding, was voted down 52-44, but received the support of six Republican Senators — Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah.

Manchin defected? Not surprising.
Collins, Murkowski and Romney defect? Interesting.

Romney is trying to set himself up as the next president.

My predictions:

Shut down drags into Feb.

I beginning to see the possibility that Trump will not be the next president, but a Republican will be. Romney, for all his denial, is likely. I still can't tell what the likelihood is that Trump will be impeached. If it is not to be Trump, then that likely means he will be impeached. I doubt that it will happen this year though.

Liberals have gone insane and have become more divisive. They have lost their roots and are attacking silly things like kids in maga hats, while ignoring the fact that the native american lied through and through and has a history of lying. This fires up the right and gives opportunity to a moderate Republican. Thus they will not win the Presidency. They may not even take the senate.

Trump White House grows eager to escape losing shutdown fight
After a day of failed Senate action, Trump and his advisers realize they may never win over Democrats in a battle that is costing them dearly.

The only 'negotiation' Trump has offered so far is 'my way or GTFO'. That's hardly a starting point.

His bluff didn't work, and Pelosi was smart & experienced enough to see it.

And it appears to have been the right tactic...for now, anyway.

One can argue about how 'fair' the tactics were in politics, but that's always a very subjective opinion, depending on whether your agenda is moving forward or not. For right now, it appears Trump & the GOP are starting to bend.

There is plenty of common ground on the issue of immigration- Trump has oversimplified this into his wall, which has minimal impact on illegal immigration and drug trafficking, and public opinion is greatly against. Compromise means putting down his singular, emblematic 'wall', and addressing the problem with real, effective strategies.

I understand the frustration with Trump's temperament. Still, Pelosi is offering nothing but one dollar. Well, no-one is talking about 'sanctuary cities' right now. Assuming Trump backs down from his wall, this whole shitshow has at least raised the issue of immigration in the public's mind, and both sides are going to have a hard time avoiding it (like they've been doing for years and years). For the conservative Right, it's been a longtime burning issue, but the GOP politicians have known it's political suicide to approach it, so they've done nothing more than bluster about it.

This time, though, may be different. I don't think Pelosi will get away with simply saying no to his wall, and then letting the whole issue fade back. It's too hot of an issue now, and it's due to get some attention.

Edit:
And in fact, Pelosi has stood by 1.3 B for his wall from the start. Schumer at one point bumped up to 1.7, but then he quietly backed down to 1.3.

I wonder if the Democrats are taking the long view here.

The timeline runs like this, Democrats encourage and champion allowing migrants from Latin countries into the US pretty much unfettered. These migrants settle as immigrants have historically done, and once comfortable, have children. Those children are now legitimate US Citizens by right of birth.

Eighteen years later, this wave of new first generation Voters remember how the Democrats gave sanctuary to their parents and they vote straight Democrat from then on.

‘We’re talking’: McConnell and Schumer attempt to defuse shutdown
There’s growing hope that the longtime Senate operators can end the stalemate fueled by Trump’s border wall demands.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/25/government-shutdown-mcconnell-schumer-talks-1125401

Chuck Schumer emerged from Mitch McConnell’s office after a 30-minute meeting on Thursday afternoon bearing a wide grin.

“We’re talking,” the Senate minority leader said as he walked back to his office.

After five weeks of mostly radio silence, with Washington reeling from the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, the two party leaders are finally in a room together. And it might be just what's needed to, eventually, end an impasse sparked by President Donald Trump's long-running quest for his border wall.

Baby steps.

Drop the insistence on his useless, selfish wall and let the talks begin on real immigration reform and border security.

Trump planning shutdown announcement
It wasn't immediately clear what the president might say, but the remarks come as lawmakers look for guidance on shutdown negotiations.
By JAKE SHERMAN, ANDREW RESTUCCIA, GABBY ORR and BURGESS EVERETT 01/25/2019 12:27 PM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/25/trump-shutdown-announcement-1125529

President Donald Trump is expected to make an announcement about the government shutdown early Friday afternoon, according to multiple administration and Capitol Hill sources.

It wasn't immediately clear what the president would announce, but the move comes as lawmakers of both parties are looking to the White House for guidance as they search for a way out of the 35-day partial shutdown.

**
A White House spokeswoman did not immediately respond to requests for comment. White House officials cautioned that the potential announcement was tentative.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who met with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday and spoke to Trump on Thursday, said a series of airport delays that have rippled across the country are “signs of things to come” during the shutdown. He’s been urging the president to endorse the idea of reopening the government to have a three-week immigration debate.

Airports are getting snarled, the economy is at risk, and public opinion polls are tanking for his wall (if not Trump's 2020 hopes). This could an interesting announcement.

The talk is that Trump's announcement could include a plan for him to re-open the gov't for a short time to start talks on border security. That's a major reversal for him, but since his 'my way or GTFO' approach has failed miserably, he's prolly finally smelling the coffee.

Word is that once it's been re-opened, it would be tough to shut it down again (although the Debt Ceiling issue in March will provide another opportunity), so he may consider wielding the 'National Emergency' declaration as a cudgel.

Edit:

Trump plans shutdown announcement amid signs of a deal
The agreement would fund the government through Feb. 15 while negotiators work out a larger immigration and border security compromise, sources said.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce an agreement to temporarily reopen the federal government after the longest shutdown in U.S. history, according to multiple people familiar with the tentative deal.

The agreement, which has been hashed out with congressional leaders, would fund the government through Feb. 15 while negotiators work out a larger immigration and border security compromise, the sources said. The deal does not include funding for the border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. White House aides and others close to the process cautioned that state of play remains fluid, adding that Trump has been known to change his mind at the last minute.

Conservatives to Trump: You caved!
By MATTHEW CHOI 01/25/2019 04:02 PM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/25/government-shutdown-over-border-wall-1127564

Conservatives had a quick message for President Donald Trump after he announced a deal to end the government shutdown without funds for his border wall: You caved!

"Good news for George Herbert Walker Bush: As of today, he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States," tweeted conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

"Nancy Pelosi is alpha," tweeted conservative film maker Mike Cernovich.

And right wing commentator Michael Malice opined: "Apparently a wall isn't as good as a cave."

Conservative outlets, from the Drudge Report to Breitbart News, also blasted headlines in dramatic font declaring Trump caved with "NO WALL."

Priceless. But this ain't over yet, not by a long shot.

Trump will easily react to those conservative ankle biter pundits with something ridiculous....i.e. a National Emergency declaration.

It's not that I mind their posts (they're at least as welcome on here as I am), but that I'm curious and I'm a bit slow. I can't figure out who "reincarnated."

More Coulter commentary:

After the White House revealed in December it could back off from Trump's demands for over $5 billion in border wall funding to avoid a shutdown, Coulter mocked the president on Twitter, leading to a feud in which Trump unfollowed one of his biggest campaign supporters.

"The chant wasn't 'SIGN A BILL WITH B.S. PROMISES ABOUT "BORDER SECURITY" AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE, GUARANTEED TO FAIL!' It was "BUILD A WALL!" Coulter tweeted in December.

During a March interview with The New York Times' Frank Bruni, Coulter said Trump should feel the "fear of God" if he doesn't build the wall, arguing his supporters would leave him en masse unless he fulfills his campaign promise.

"He could sell Ivanka Trump merchandise from the Oval Office if he would just build the wall," Coulter said. "If he doesn't change course, no, they're never coming back."

These black eyes (not just one, but two) that Trump received yesterday are a prime example of his juvenile lack of political experience. His populist approach was just that- rile up the population- but his actual vision and ability to enact his agenda via smart politicking has been non-existent from the start.

Still, people are people, and his base will be easily rallied with just the right words- more carefully chosen this time, if Trump has any functioning brain.

There's an opportunity for the GOP to really turn this around on the Dems going forward on the issue of immigration and border security- Dems have been more resistant to touch the issue that Repubs for a long time, as its more likely alienate a significant part of their voters. They are on record now as saying that they would approach this issue only after the gov't has been re-opened- Pelosi is going to have to show some kind of effort towards addressing this problem. I hope she goes further with it than the AOC idealists would be comfortable with.

The Wall Street Journal had an article today on understanding what 5.7 billion dollars actually equates to.

They write $14.00 per every man, woman, & child in the U.S.

I did my own calculation based on the IRS figure for 2017 tax returns, which is 251,046,000 returns.

Divide that into $5,700,000,000 & I end up with approx. $22.70 per taxpayer. So, Heidi & I would get to pay $45.40 for Trump's proposed wall.

It ain't worth that to me.

There might not be a mueller report. The AG might suppress or sanitize it. But I don’t think mueller is putting all his eggs in the report basket. The way these indictments are worded, he’s leaving enough open for the Southern District and NYState to follow up on even if he gets canned.

Fox News was on, something about *the wall,* and he turns to a stranger next to him and makes some comment about how DT just wants the wall so he can get a kickback from whoever he hires to build it. I was ready to hear a Trump soundboard repeater, but the guy actually was speechless. He stuttered something unintelligible and walked away.

To someone else, he said "You know, every prison on this country has a border wall, with armed guards watching it. Yet drugs still get into the prisons. The guards are bribed. Why would anyone think it's any different getting drugs passed the border?"

That just seemed to make too much sense. The person just agreed, but also got up and left.

MB1! It's good to see you share the conservative obsession with weeding "welfare chistlers" off the govenment dole.

Of course, now that the latest Republican tax cut for the rich & corporations is kicking our budget deficit skyward again, in spite of current economic prosperity, conservatives want to cut social programs that cost money. Stuff like Medicare that used to be "untouchable" due to the public love for free money, are now facing cuts.

Meanwhile, that budget deficit just keeps rising, in bad Democratic times & good Republican times. I long for when Republicans actually did something about balancing the budget, rather than exceeding it.

The deficit rose to $779 billion in fiscal year 2018, up 17% from last year, according to final figures released Monday by the Treasury Department. That's the largest number since 2012, when the country was still spending massively to stimulate an economy struggling to recover.

Government receipts were flat this year from last year. Corporate tax collections fell $76 billion, or 22%, due to the Republican-backed tax cut. But that drop was more than offset by increased revenues from individual and self-employment taxes. The fiscal year ended September 30.
Spending rose 3% over the previous year, fueled in part by increases to the defense budget agreed upon in September 2017 as part of a deal between Republicans and Democrats to head off a government shutdown. Social Security and interest on the federal debt also contributed to the increase.

In June (2018), the federal debt — which aggregates annual deficits over time — stood at 78% of gross domestic product, the highest level since right after World War II. Updated figures were not immediately available on Monday.

As interest rates rise, servicing that ballooning debt could pose challenging. Treasury spent $522 billion last year paying interest, up 14% from the year before. That's more than the cost of Medicaid, food stamps, and the department of Housing and Urban Development combined. But it is smaller as a percentage of GDP than it has been historically.

In late September, the House passed a bill that would extend individual tax cuts that are currently are slated to end in 2025, at a cost of $631 billion over a 10-year window.

Unfortunately, I find it somewhat more difficult to appreciate ST conservative, although I did object & posted my objections to an attack of Liberal bullying on our long-departed red-neck pundit Ron.

Your frequent over-long posts show good English useage, but some of your thoughts are similar to what I used to encounter, when I was talking with Survivalists who bought outdoor gear I mainly sold to outdoor shops. I certainly have some conservative beliefs, but since you are pigeon-holing me as a liberal, so be it.

And considering your bad advice to me, you might want to try applying to yourself.

Again, so utterly predictable....

1)Are you yet aware that the cry out of "liberal outrage" whenever one doesn't want to acknowledge a point made by a purported Democrat IS one of the *chants* developed and amplified by the Russian 2016 election campaign?

Thus far, that is "demonstrated" only in the "what happened?" liberal mind. What is far more demonstrated is how Hillary and the DNC employed every dirty trick, including colluding with Russian contacts to dig up dirt on Trump, to win the election. But, instead of looking to your own house and vociferously demanding change there, the last two years have been EVERY bit of trying to nullify and protest against this election that the left had warned the conservatives to NOT engage in "when" Hillary won.

I dislike the right basically the same as I dislike the left, but the left has engaged in two years of epic hypocrisy, and it continues right through your post to this day.

Well, now you do know.

Actually, no I don't.

Do you know about Obama telling Putin that after the election he would be freer to "work with" [collude with] him? And I suppose that we are to believe the media regarding the whole Russian uranium scam.

I could also ask you about all sorts of things that you SHOULD know about Hillary, but I bet that you don't know those things either. The media has created a circus, and you are playing along.

So remember when you slag that phrase, that you aren't thinking for yourself, are being used.

Pot calling kettle.

By a hostile nation engaged in cyber warfare with *your* county.

All sorts of nations are thus engaged. China, for example, is arguably the worst hacker nation on the planet. It's certainly one of the worst human-rights violators on the planet. I, for one, would like to see us cut ties with China entirely until they join the modern, civilized world (including honoring international contracts and intellectual property laws, as well as basic civil rights!). But all the left can do is support China and moan about the "damage" Trump is doing to the economy by playing hard ball with them.

You push for increasing globalism and are then shocked when American labor is gutted by the fact that, OF COURSE, American companies offshore jobs to those nations where labor is MUCH cheaper.

I give you *your* country as a courtesy, because that's how the game is played. Do you know they even have a term for those who unwittingly further their agenda(such as *the* president? The term is translated in English as "Useful Idiot."

That sword cuts all ways. Everybody now days calls "the other side" a bunch of "useful idiots." Over the last couple of years, the left has been SO frantic in its use of epithets that these just roll off the shoulders of reasonable people now.

You missed your target.

2) "Lady, close your legs." #misogyny

My point exactly. Rather than to, as a REASONABLE person would, say, "Uh, yeah. WOMEN assert full control over their 'reproductive rights,' so SHE does have the final say about who impregnates her and how often."

No, but you go straight to an epithet. As I said: MISS.

Until the left finally learns that epithets are NOT discussion, and that you make enemies of everybody who has not drunk your EXACT flavor of Kook-Aid, you are a lost cause.

Do you think there are no men in this country that have been responsible for 15 or more pregnancies for which they had/have no plan/strategy or intention of supporting?

Absolutely! But, see, again you are an easy target; actual, I can't miss! See, it's the LEFT that asserts that WOMEN are the SOLE source of reproductive rights (and, thus, by extension, responsibility).

You can't have it both ways: radical, male-bashing feminism AND male responsibility. Your radical feminism asserts that men have NO RIGHTS when it comes to kids and reproductive decisions! So, you don't then get to also hold men responsible.

By MY lights there was equal responsibility for the kids. By YOUR lights, there is NO responsibility, because there are NO consequences! "We the people" get to absorb ALL the consequences of unrestrained and ridiculously irresponsible BREEDING. And by YOUR lights, ultimately, it is the WOMAN who is the ultimate adjudicator of reproductive rights. Period.

So, YOU get to own it, and so does the woman.

Oh, and:
"That was an experiment."

Sadly, that's like one of those "quick comebacks" that occurs to you two hours after it would have been relevant.

There's a tension in a forum context. The venue doesn't work well for systematic, rigorous argumentation. But, our entire society now "argues" via sound bites and utter superficiality. I can't abide the latter, but a forum doesn't lend itself well to the former.

Are you ever introspective enough to wonder why folks seldom post approving remarks about your wordy missives? Or is it all about the satisfaction of posting them?

Wow, how to respond to such tripe? You're obviously not introspective enough to realize how "superior" and paternalistic your post just was.

See, Fritz, you have a long history of cherry-picking just the parts of my posts that you can then CAST as being "over the top absurd," usually without taking my actual points into consideration. You are one of the folks here that I actually don't take seriously.

Are YOU introspective in the same sense you ask of me? Or is posting here something you do TO garner applause and strokes? Do you get lots of them yourself? Well, the liberal echo chambers, I guess, would be a good place to join the herd and feel good about yourself.

For my part, I don't engage in group-think, seek strokes, or get too worried if I'm not in the "mainstream" on pretty much any subject or activity. And there is no doubt that these politard threads are dominated by group-think, with very few of us even bothering to TRY to break into the echo chamber. When you're in the obvious majority, it's easy to feel like your posts are "just the way they should be."

You don't like my tone? Well, I guess tough. I'm not here to please you in any way. IF you are intellectually honest, that won't matter to you, and if you're not, our whole present conversation is irrelevant.

I realized long ago that you and I are very unlikely to ever be buddies, and I find your perpetual misuse of "quotes" from me, all the while claiming to have "only skimmed," to be entirely disingenuous, just as is your little bit of "friendly advice" (utterly paternalistic) now.

Trump backs off attempt to rebrand his border wall plan: 'A WALL is a WALL!'
By CAITLIN OPRYSKO 01/31/2019 08:52 AM EST Updated 01/31/2019 09:49 AM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/31/trump-border-wall-1138319

President Donald Trump appeared on Thursday to back off his administration’s efforts to rebrand his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, calling the semantics discussion "political games" and insisting that "A WALL is a WALL!"

“Large sections of WALL have already been built with much more either under construction or ready to go,” he falsely claimed in a tweet. “Renovation of existing WALLS is also a very big part of the plan to finally, after many decades, properly Secure Our Border. The Wall is getting done one way or the other!”

In a separate tweet, he added: “Lets [sic] just call them WALLS from now on and stop playing political games! A WALL is a WALL!”

Is another shutdown inevitable? Apparently Trump & his cronies have no problem with it, if they don't use the 'National Emergency' ploy. The GOP as a whole is quite squeamish about it, though, and McConnell is doing what he can in the background to remove the shutdown option (perhaps for good).

Fox News figures prod Trump to call a national emergency for his wall
By MATTHEW CHOI 02/01/2019 11:37 AM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/01/national-emergency-border-wall-fox-trump-1143220

Fox News figures are sending a message to President Donald Trump: Pull the trigger on declaring a national emergency.

With a little over two weeks until another possible government shutdown, multiple Fox hosts and commentators are goading the president into taking the emergency option to build a wall on the southern border, despite the political and legal risks involved.

"Is there any, in your judgment, any reason in the world why he should not call that emergency?" Fox News host Lou Dobbs bluntly asked a guest on his show Thursday evening.

Sebastian Gorka, former deputy assistant to the president, also said Thursday on Fox News that Democrats' efforts to stop the wall were merely politics, and pushed for a national emergency declaration.

"Let's be very clear, this is just politics, this is about the vote. This has nothing to do with the security of the nation," Gorka told Fox News' Sean Hannity. "And on February the 16th, I expect [Trump] to declare a national emergency to build the wall."

Hannity, who often serves as an informal adviser to Trump, replied: "Agreed."

I must throw myself on this new pyre of self-confessed racism.

Despite my strong dislike of racism, I dressed as a "Rasta-Man" complete with "black-face" for a 1987 Halloween bar party in ski-town Ketchum Idaho.

I'm sure, although I was clueless at the time, that I was carrying out deeply aggresive attacks from my ID upon our society.

Happily, there were no blacks at the party, to grab me & ask what the fock I thought I was up to.

Actually, I thought I might pick up a white girl, since I did not have a "main-squeeze" at the time.

And yes, I know my political career is over.

I was at the Pilot doing internet and a news story of the politician in blackface came on. I had heard about it but not seen the picture referenced, but there it was. He is costumed as a "negro" standing next to a person costumed as a Klansman.

That's crossing a line. It was clearly not intended to be a political statement castigating the KKK, but some kind of "joke." The politician deserves to be asked about this. It could have been a "teachable moment" if he had said "Yes, that was me. It was a different time and I was an ignorant cracker(in different wording). I came to understand....innapropriatenss through(conveys some story that shines a light on his enlightenment and changed outlook). But that is not what he did.

A woman watching it got in a snit and spouted some talking point probably heard on InfoWars or somewhere similar, and was like "My parents dressed me as Aunt Jemimah one Halloween when I was a kid. It wasn't that we hated blacks."

I guffawed, as the Klansman?Blackface image was still on air.

I WISH I had said "No, they were only mocking slavery and the "House Nigger Mammy."

Instead I practically shrieked "For God's sake - he's standing next to a person in a Ku Klux Klan costume? LOOK at it!!! What the hell is wrong with you?"

The lady looked up at the tv just as the image was changed, so I don't think she actually "saw it" although it WAS up when she made her statement. Still doesn't mean she "saw it" but likely she had at some point and the wrongness just didn't register on her brain.

She huffed "Well." and said something which I cannot recall but it was something about "lots of people probably wore costumes..." And my response was "And Hitler!" hoping that reference would help her "get it," but she astonished me by thinking I was now somehow agreeing with her. She agreed, "and Hitler."

I wish to othat I would have said "So, when the Hitler is standing next to someone costumed as a Bergen Belsen captive, does THAT seem like something you would support as being all in fun? For the politician whose vote you want to rely one when it comes to ethical/human rights questions?

I don't recall ever dressing up as anyone from another race, and don't think "blackface" was something I or anyone in my social milieu would have done.

But: it's hard to remember after 40 years or so, but I'm pretty sure that at least in the 1970s, a costume such as dressing up as a sort of cliched Indian (buckskins, moccasins, feathers) would not have been looked upon as racist or inappropriate.

Times change, and we have to be careful about judging people by anachronistic standards.

Now what's the deal with the Lieutenant Governor date raping someone?

Sloaper, women do not routinely seek 3rd trimester abortions under ANY circumstances, and NO ethical doctor would perform one when the child is healthy or even moderately disabled. The 3rd term abortion is done only in cases where the mothers life is at risk or the child is so severely handicapped they will suffer for the duration of their life. This is a very complex issue well beyond the sound bites like you posted.

Will our country PROMISE to provide the best possible care for these beings once they are born? Because they are so handicapped they require round the clock assistance not for the first year or even qi years, but for the duration of their lives.

I know a woman who loves her son who never progressed to even crawl. That child would not have been a 3rd term abortion candidate. The mother visits him weekly, and tries to soothe him as he flails in agony and frustration(?).

She was trying to find another care place for him as the one he'd been in for 30 years couldn't manage his personality any longer. Trained professions, unable to attend to this person. The costs keep this women in poverty. Her husband did the best he could but divorced long ago from the strain.

‘Too hot to handle’: Pelosi predicts GOP won’t trigger another shutdown
The House speaker discusses Trump’s border wall, impeachment and the 2020 presidential campaign in an exclusive interview with POLITICO.
By HEATHER CAYGLE, SARAH FERRIS and JOHN BRESNAHAN 02/07/2019 05:00 AM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/07/pelosi-trump-government-shutdown-1154355

(Excerpts)

Speaker Nancy Pelosi is vowing that the federal government will not shut down again, even as President Donald Trump ratchets up pressure for his border wall ahead of a fast-approaching deadline.

“There will not be another shutdown,” Pelosi confidently asserted during a half-hour interview Wednesday in her Capitol office. “No, it’s not going to happen.”

After the 35-day shutdown — and the political drubbing that Trump and Republicans took during the record-breaking impasse — Pelosi predicted GOP leaders won’t go down that road again.

“I have a club that I started, it’s called the ‘Too Hot to Handle Club.’ And this is a too-hot-to-handle issue,” Pelosi quipped.

Pelosi said she believes a bipartisan House-Senate panel negotiating on border security will come to an agreement before the Feb. 15 funding deadline. And she pledged to support any deal that emerges from those talks, even as she remains firm that there won’t be new money for Trump’s wall.

***

While saying she respects the office Trump holds — and prays for him daily — Pelosi dismissed Tuesday’s State of the Union address, even as the California Democrat insisted she can work with the president to move legislation that would benefit the country.

“Don’t waste your time on this. This is theatrics, this is not government,” Pelosi said of Trump’s speech. “We just take this in stride.”

***

“You have to do it right,” Pelosi said on the issue of the Ways and Means Committee obtaining Trump’s tax returns. “I hear people say, ‘Why didn’t they do it the first day?’ You have to do it right. You have to protect the prerogatives of the House of Representatives and you cannot be scattershot about that.”

The cautious approach is classic Pelosi: Have a plan, build support for the idea inside and outside Congress, and then methodically execute the strategy.

Pelosi defended her high-profile Democratic freshmen, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who have come under increasing GOP attacks.

“You can’t worry about what the Republicans are going to say about you,” Pelosi said. “This place is not a place for people who are worried about what the Republicans are going to say about you.”

Pelosi’s efforts have paid off with Ocasio-Cortez, especially. The freshmen superstar told NPR on Wednesday that Pelosi has “done a really good job so far,” even as Pelosi has sidestepped one of the left’s top priorities — a “Green New Deal.”

Ya gotta wonder if her adamant claim that there won't be a shutdown is genuine, and based on experienced confidence, or if it's a taunt to Trump to do it again (which his impulsive reactive self could certainly do).

Hopefully AOC is taking lots of notes on this.

You're right that we don't know the truth.
Just seems to me that Vanessa Tyson's accusations against Lt. Go. Fairfax seem much more credible than Blasey Ford's strange tale against Kav.

There were more than just Ford's accusation against Kav. There was a much broader pattern of [alleged] behavior that gave Ford's accusations more credibility.

What the standard of proof for these situations should be, is difficult.

As is what should be the punishment.

Any claims of sexual assault simply have to have video or audio evidence to back them

short of that, any claims have to be witnessed by a clean, credible person to testify

or the assault did not happen

even the sexual assault victim telling another person it happened does not count

because it could be a set up, a plant, an attempt perhaps pay off someone to back the story

because people have been known to lie, to get media attention, be a star

it takes a person with a powerful intellect to see frat boy Kavanaugh's sexual assault accuser as nothing but a liar, non credible, no accual witness to back her, she should not be believed

Shutdown talks stalled
A stopgap Homeland Security bill is being discussed now.
By MARIANNE LEVINE and HEATHER CAYGLE 02/10/2019 08:53 AM EST Updated 02/10/2019 09:44 AM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/10/government-shutdown-talks-hit-snag-1160924

Negotiations to avert another government shutdown have stalled, leaving lawmakers in the same place they’ve been for months.

Although lawmakers were optimistic going into the weekend about reaching a border security deal and funding the government past Feb. 15, negotiators are now discussing a stopgap Homeland Security bill, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) acknowledged Sunday that negotiations have stalled and put the odds of getting a deal at 50-50.

"We've got some problems with the Democrats dealing with ICE," Shelby told Fox News' Chris Wallace, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "I'm not confident we're going to get there, I'm hoping we will get there."

I'd be very surprised if this wound up in another shutdown situation, as it would splash a lot of sh#t over the GOP, if the Dems play it reasonably well. Still, I'm pretty numb from 2+ years of being surprised at this point, so that surprise would be pretty minimal.

Apogee, you underestimate the spinout. During the last shutdown I listened to people daily decrying the Democrats for not giving him that wall. One even said that the delay on voting was because Pelosi was out of the country. Another person then said - in ernest - "They should shoot her when she tries to get back in the country."

There are people who really do believe that the Democrats are harrassing the president with this whole Mueller thing, and have no factual basis for it. Which is what is being pushed by TrumpMedia. Tell them "You REALLY think people are being arrested and detained and it's all bogus?" They turn to stone and refuse to even consider walking through the thought.

At this point in the process of another shutdown, the wind is more in the Dem's back than it is in the Republican's. More Repubs are against the idea of another shutdown than in support of it- and a similar opposition exists to Trump's 'National Emergency' strategy. The agreement they've been trying to reach over the last week in Congress has made better bipartisan progress, but the sticking point is still how much funding to provide for Trump's wall. He'll probably get some...remember that the original budget called for $1.6 B...so whatever he can get, he'll spin as a 'victory', whether it's a wall, or a fence, or a pack of rabid kittens.

Of course, Dems have a well-established history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, so there's plenty of ways to bungle this up. I'm counting on Pelosi to stay on track with her strategy.

I talk regularly to a guy at the hardware store who is a trump supporter. We are friendly towards each other. He believes some very strange things. Many that are easily disproved, but which he won't listen to about. 2 of my neighbors are trump supporters. I get along with them well enough. I just don't hammer them about their beliefs. Contrary to what one might think, Idyllwild is predominantly conservative, and a fair number of Democrats who hold some similar conservative views. The family that I have here tend to vote Republican, and the great majority of my neighbors are Republican, with a fair number of outright Trump supporters.

One thing that has become much clearer to me in the last few years is that that there is a difference between conservatives that vote Republican, the GOP/Republican Party, and Trump supporters. There is a great tendency on the Left to lump them all together, but that is not at all the case- and to try to have a conversation with someone and regard them as all the same is not going to be productive for anyone.

From the 'Shutdown Talks Stalled' link above:

Negotiations reached an impasse Saturday, primarily over detention beds, the source said. Democratic negotiators offered a deal to their Republican counterparts, but Republicans are refusing to negotiate until Democrats take back their demand for a cap on the number of beds, the source added.

Lawmakers are discussing the possibility of a year-long continuing resolution bill but so far discussions have not led to a proposal that both House Democrats and Senate Republicans could get on board with, the source said.

The impasse in negotiations adds pressure on party leaders and the White House, who will have to step in if the conference members can't quickly resolve their differences over detention beds and border barrier funding.

The discussion comes after the longest government shutdown in history. President Donald Trump has insisted for money to fund his border wall, demanding for $5.7 billion. But lawmakers remain at an impasse over how much money to provide to fund the border barrier.

Last week, conservative lawmakers said Trump would accept around $2 billion, but Democrats have so far rejected that amount.

Sure. When you only have two parties they are going to be broad.

And the republican party rewards the hand that feeds it. They could pass a trillion dollar tax cut for the wealthy but just couldn't figure out how to come up with 5 billion for a wall.

But Trump has taken over the republican party. Voting republican in 2016 in the national elections was futhering Trump.

Fortunately, at least in the House, enough republican, suburban women voted democrat to provide a bigger check on Trump.

'Let’s all pray': Congress moves to prevent another shutdown
It's still unknown whether Trump will sign the bill.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/14/spending-bill-vote-government-shutdown-1170006

Congress faces a critical test Thursday as both chambers will vote on a giant funding deal that would temporarily end a long-running border dispute and avert another humiliating government shutdown.

The $328 billion package — which funds one-quarter of the government — is the result of roughly two weeks of frenetic talks between Democratic and Republican negotiators from both chambers.

Top GOP spending leaders insist they’ve kept close contact with the White House throughout the talks but have offered no promise that President Donald Trump would back the measure.

This is what it's come down to for Republicans...prayer that their Party's leader will be able to scrape enough sh#t from his brain to do something that benefits someone else besides himself.

Funding bill includes new limits on Trump’s immigration crackdown
By TED HESSON 02/14/2019 02:26 PM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/14/funding-bill-limits-trump-immigration-1175455

The bipartisan homeland security spending bill released early Thursday pushes back on aspects of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown — even while providing $1.4 billion for border barriers and nearly 5,000 additional beds to detain undocumented immigrants.

Tucked into the 1,159-page bill are provisions that limit Trump’s ability to round up undocumented immigrants and that increase oversight of the officers who carry out those sweeps. On the border, restrictions on barrier construction will bar the administration from erecting fences on several large properties in South Texas, including a butterfly sanctuary and a historic Catholic church.

The bill ignores the Trump administration’s request to fund 750 additional Border Patrol agents, according to a Democratic summary of the measure and a joint explanatory statement. Additionally, it ignores the administration’s request for 2,000 more Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

The legislation amounts to a subtle rejection of Trump’s aggressive enforcement tactics — a needling that reflects the new power dynamic since Democrats took control of the House in January.

If this is what's in the bill that's being put in front of him, not too surprising he might sign it then declare the NE.

Or maybe his NE bluster is just a bluff...that's certainly his style, too. Hard to tell when you're dealing with a sociopath.

It's an interesting strategy....he's been getting hammered by the GOP that they aren't going to support another shutdown, because that's going to splash sh#t all over them big time. Yet Trump wants his wall more than another Mar-a-Lago, so he's going to do whatever he can to make it happen.

Declaring a NE (even if it fails in court) gives political cover to the GOP by averting a shutdown, and allows Trump to show his base that he's making good on his promise. Even if the NE gets tossed out of court, he looks good to his base for trying.

Trump technically obese, despite doctor's clean bill of health
A four-pound weight gain over the last year makes the president obese under the official definition of the term.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/14/trump-technically-obese-doctors-health-1170438

President Donald Trump gained four pounds over the last year, according to a new assessment from his doctor, a weight increase that makes him technically obese.

But Trump's doctor, Sean Conley, nonetheless determined that the president "remains in very good health overall" in a memorandum released by the White House on Thursday.

Conley recorded Trump's height as 6'3" and his weight as 243 pounds. Last year, the president clocked in at 239 pounds, according to an assessment by his former doctor, Ronny Jackson.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that a body mass index of 30.0 or higher falls into the obese range. Based on his current height and weight, Trump's body mass index is 30.4, putting him across the obesity threshold. Obese people are at increased risk of a slew of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the president's weight.

Trump declares national emergency to unlock border wall funds
Trump aims to tap over $6.5 billion using techniques that are sure to invite legal challenges.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/15/trump-national-emergency-border-wall-1170988

President Donald Trump on Friday declared a state of emergency on the southern border and immediately direct $8 billion to construct or repair as many as 234 miles of a border barrier.

The move — which Trump acknowledged is sure to invite vigorous legal challenges from activists and government officials — comes after Trump failed to get the $5.7 billion he was seeking from lawmakers. Instead, Trump agreed to sign a congressional funding deal that included just $1.375 for border security, an amount he claimed as a victory but said was still “not enough.”

In addition to the funds Congress has appropriated, the White House will seek to redirect $3.6 billion from a military construction fund, $600 million from a Treasury Department drug forfeiture fund and $2.5 billion from a Pentagon drug prevention program, acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney told reporters Friday.

Trump said Abe showed the president “the most beautiful five-page letter” that he sent to the Norwegian committee that awards the prestigious diplomatic prize each year.

“He had rocket ships, and he had missiles flying over Japan, and they had alarms going off, you know that,” Trump said of Abe, speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday. “Now all of a sudden, they feel good. They feel safe. I did that.

Here's an arch-Conservative that believes Trump's NE declaration is a really bad idea that any reasonably intelligent court is going to have big problems with:

Trump’s Emergency Declaration Is Contemptuous of the Rule of Law
By DAVID FRENCH
February 15, 2019 6:29 PM
https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/02/trump-emergency-declaration-contemptuous-of-rule-of-law/

This is no Trump v. Hawaii; the president’s discretion is dramatically limited.

(Excerpts)

One thing that is abundantly clear from reading the full text of President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency on the southern border — he’s barely even deigning to explain why there is a particular crisis today, or why that crisis is so grave that it requires the military to combat it. At its heart it’s a contemptuous document. It’s the proclamation of a monarch, not an argument by a president. And it should fail in court.

***

First, let’s consider whether Trump’s national emergency actually “requires the use of the armed forces.” In this regard, the declaration itself damages Trump’s case.

The southern border is a major entry point for criminals, gang members, and illicit narcotics. The problem of large-scale unlawful migration through the southern border is long-standing, and despite the executive branch’s exercise of existing statutory authorities, the situation has worsened in certain respects in recent years. In particular, recent years have seen sharp increases in the number of family units entering and seeking entry to the United States and an inability to provide detention space for many of these aliens while their removal proceedings are pending. If not detained, such aliens are often released into the country and are often difficult to remove from the United States because they fail to appear for hearings, do not comply with orders of removal, or are otherwise difficult to locate.

Look at the list carefully. He’s listing criminal challenges. He’s listing humanitarian challenges. He’s listing the problems on the border that have existed for decades and that Congress has enacted comprehensive statutory schemes (including funding civilian wall construction and civilian immigration authorities) to combat. Gang activity and drug-smuggling are grave problems, but they are crimes, not acts of war. The declaration doesn’t even try to argue that there is a precise, unique challenge that only the military can counter — such as a national disaster that would require the use of the military’s unrivaled heavy-lift capabilities or its immediate access to manpower.

Instead, the declaration cites the wasteful 2018 border deployment, but that is only evidence that the military has been used, not that it must be used. If the mere fact of a deployment were proof of the necessity of military intervention, then there would be no limiting principle on a president’s action. The message is clear — the military is “required” simply because he says it is required.

***

We’ve grown sadly accustomed to presidents’ abusing poorly drafted statutes to stretch their power well beyond the Founders’ intent. It’s strangely comforting to read a statute like Section 2808 that’s competently written and precisely drafted. While a court isn’t likely to overturn the emergency declaration itself, it is unlikely to believe the administration’s fiction that a civilian wall is true “military construction” or that it is any way “necessary” to support the use of the armed forces. Indeed Trump’s declaration hardly even tries to make the case.

Congress could certainly try to block it, but I kinda doubt they'd get the 2/3 in the Senate they'd need to override it- too many Republicans have not been willing to go against Trump up to this point. But maybe this will be a turning point.

Trump is likely right that he will lose in lower courts, but could prevail at the SCOTUS level, although the SCOTUS is not likely to be excited about intervening in a matter of Congressional function like that. In any case, that's months or years down the road.

The greatest implication here is that Trump has opened the door to the use of a National Emergency declaration for the purposes of a wide variety of political interests- interests that should be moving through the Legislative branch of government, rather than the Executive branch. It's easy to see a Democratic president declaring a NE for the purposes of climate control, or gun regulation...issues Republicans revile.

Trump has opted to take the short-term political benefit with his base with little regard to the long term harm to the Country and our governmental system. Classic Trump-politics. Perhaps he's doing this because he suspects his time in office won't go beyond 2020, so he figures, 'WTF? This is all about me and my legacy.'

Interestingly, this perspective is prevalent on both sides of the aisle right now, and left-leaning media like CNN is spouting pieces like that, and so is right-leaning media like National Review.

There seems to be strong sentiment across the board that this NE strategy is a really bad idea for everyone...the only ones that don't really get it are Trump and his base. Status quo.

The real problem is if he wins in court, which is possible. If he does, it would be because courts might defer to the executive branch on the question of whether an emergency does in fact exist and say it is Congress that has the power to check the president. However, we have for several generations lived in an era of docile congresses.

Anyway, if he goes through with this and succeeds he will have created a standardless work around to constitution for himself AND his successors.

Well, of course they did. Trump and Fox are like conjoined twins.

Meanwhile, most of the rest of the body politik, knows that this is a really bad thing.

Edit:
Lower courts will prolly find against him, but the SCOTUS just might defer to his constitutional Executive power. Maybe. Or they might find some sideways decision because they aren’t keen on dabbling in issues that are more in the purview of the Legislative branch.

Either way, it will take time...and if the SCOTUS defers to Executive power, the gates will be open for any POTUS to call anything a NE. Trump has let that genie out of the bottle...mostly for his own selfish interests.

I really do not think SCOTUS will find a way to justify the emergency declaration. There is a reason they are appointed for life, helps to keep politics out of it. None of the justices have anything to gain by kissing Trumps fat azz. Reversing the lower courts on this issue would green light all sorts of emergency declarations for issues like global warming, gun control etc. No SC justice wants that baked into their legacy. They do care about their legacy, and Trump will be gone soon enough. I look at this as a test of our democracy, the system works if we protect it.

Boy, this is getting interesting! I'll post the link below, but The Hill thinks Trump will prevail. As far as "national emergency" goes, I say damn straight there is--but not really because of hordes of criminal Orcs charging the border, although certainly some criminals do cross--criminals not just for flouting our immigration laws, that is, i.e. gang members, etc. Of course, most illegals are just desperate to escape their crappy situation back home. But who can doubt that our leaky border and sloppy immigration enforcement over these last few decades have NOT cause a national crisis? The numbers vary, but we probably have something like TWENTY MILLION illegal immigrants. WTF? Seriously? How is this NOT a national emergency? It's been one for many years, but the problem serves both parties so well that nothing, absolutely nothing substantive or effective gets done.

It's an effing disgrace for both parties. How many people have died in the desert, how many women raped and molested, how many children carried into sex slavery because of our crappy, crappy immigration policy? For a while there--don't know if this is still true--but Arizona was cautioning folks about the dangers of hiking and traveling in the southern part of the state because of gun and drug toting illegals roaming the lawless border regions. Again, WTF? We also discovered that back country travel in Organ Pipe Nat'l Monument was only allowed with ARMED rangers. Again, WTF? When one your of our own states has these kinds of problems, we've got an emergency.

Here are some interesting stats from The Hill about the current state of affairs caused by business as usual:

**Apprehensions of illegal crossers dropped to 303,916 in fiscal 2017, but they are rising again.

There were 50,998 apprehensions in October 2018; 51,857 in November; 50,749 in December; and 47,893 in January 2019. At this rate, there will be around 806,000 apprehensions in fiscal 2019, which will be two and a half times as many as there were in fiscal 2017.

The immigration courts are overwhelmed by their caseload already. As of Nov. 30, 2018, the courts had a backlog of 809,041 cases. This did not include an additional 330,211 cases that had not been put on the active docket yet, for a total backlog of 1,139,252 cases. The backlog was only 542,411 cases when Trump took office.

The average wait for a hearing is 1,018 days — more than two and a half years.**

Yep, looks like an emergency to me--not to mention the huge numbers of unattended minors attempting to cross. We've all heard lots about that crisis.

I do not think, however, that declaring a "national emergency" to appropriate funds is the way to go for reasons already stated in this thread. I think a rational enforcement of worker eligibility would take care of A LOT of the problem. I guess some states are already doing this. The problem, as I stated above, however, is that neither party wants to solve the problem. Repubs and Dems both get to rally their bases with it. Repubs get to cry about evil MS13 psychos and strained services; Dems get to yell about evil Repubs being mean and evil. Win effin' win. Meanwhile, the tragedies and social and economic costs mount year by year.

Listening to NPR this morning, and they interviewed a Georgetown University law professor. He seems to think that trump will prevail in court.
There is no doubt he has the right to call a national emergency, and I am not sure if the court(s) want to get into a pissing match if it's legitimate or not.
The only saving grace is that it gets tied up in the system for awhile. By that time, trump might be out of office.

Well, that's one of the key reasons Trump picked Kavanaugh- Kav has well-established history supporting Executive powers- wouldn't be too surprising if Trump did prevail at the SCOTUS level.

But whether Trump 'wins' or not really isn't the point, is it? The fact that Congress has failed to deal with the immigration issue for decades is primarily why Trump was able to use this as a meme to his base in the first place. Our immigration system is f*#ked up and needs attention...and Congress needs to grow a set and do something.

It's more worrying to my eye that Trump's use of a NE to achieve his own political interests is where America 'loses'. There will be more such inappropriate declarations, which isn't what the 1976 statute (I believe) was intended to do.

California leads 16 states in lawsuit against Trump national emergency declaration
“It’s kind of awkward to say that on Presidents’ Day we’re going to be suing the president of the United States,” California’s attorney general says.

By JEREMY B. WHITE 02/18/2019 08:22 PM EST Updated 02/18/2019 08:56 PM EST
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/18/california-leads-16-states-in-lawsuit-against-trump-national-emergency-declaration-1173768

A coalition of 16 states filed suit to block President Donald Trump’s effort to fund his border wall by declaring a national emergency, calling it a “flagrant disregard of fundamental separation of powers principles.”

“Contrary to the will of Congress, the President has used the pretext of a manufactured ‘crisis’ of unlawful immigration to declare a national emergency and redirect federal dollars appropriated for drug interdiction, military construction, and law enforcement initiatives toward building a wall on the United States-Mexico border,” a complaint obtained by POLITICO and filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for Northern California read.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra had been telegraphing for weeks that he was prepared to take swift legal action if Trump followed through on his repeated vows to invoke an immigration emergency to justify diverting wall funding.

“It’s kind of awkward to say that on Presidents’ Day we’re going to be suing the president of the United States, but sometimes that’s what you have to do,” Becerra said during a Monday appearance on CNN.

As I recall, there were four Dems in 2016 who hung in there long enough to be considered legit candidates: Hillary; Jim Webb; that forgettable governor from Maryland, Governor what’shisname; and Bernie. Hillary ran on her legacy; Webb was too far right for the party (and kind of weird, too); whatshisname remained whatshisname; and Sanders was the only true lefty. Now, he has much more competition in a field that is already much more crowded overall. While no one who has yet announced is nearly as far left, Warren is solidly progressive, and the average candidate tends to be left of what 2016 offered. He certainly has much more competition this time.

For all of the histrionic reactions from the Left to Trump's idiocy, I don't think responding with a bunch of ultra-lefty candidates is a winning strategy. Especially when none of the current offerings provide the real winning characteristics of being intelligently progressive, an inspiring vision that reaches working Americans, and a campaign strategy that can communicate this effectively and push back hard against Trump's wall of bullsh#t.

On the one hand, I believe presidential overreach is a real problem, on the other, where do you draw the line?

If some country, say Iran, shoots down a US fighter plane in international airspace, the president cannot have a military response without a formal congressional declaration?

Emergency declarations can be abused, but there is a reason the executive is given emergency powers. Say some highly contagious and frequently fatal bird flu hits. The president can't declare an emergency to take steps to slow the spread? The country has to wait for congress to act first?

My priority is somebody with the best shot of winning the general election. I don't think that is Bernie or Warren. A secondary priority is somebody who would be under 70 by the end of a second term in office.

I get the value of having candidates who are on the far end of their Party's spectrum- it does have value in moving truly progressive ideas more into the front. However, being too far on that spectrum is alienating to their own Party, and easy to pick apart by the opponent.

Most disturbingly, though, is the way the ultra-leftys get so enamored and obsessed with their candidate that once it becomes clear they aren't going to be nominated, they sulk and stay home or vote for some other person that has 100% ZERO chance of winning. How does that even remotely serve their interests?

All the attention is on the Presidency in 2020

Yet hardly a peep about what is equally important, having a Democratic Senate

And that means the Dems would have to pick up a net four Senate seats, very tall order

especially this cycle when the republicans defend in mostly right leaning states

A Dem President and a Dem House with a Republican Senate means there is a zero
chance that any "progressive" plans become law

forget about Medicare for All, forget about Free College, forget about campaign finance law
forget about a Green New Deal, forget about a Dem President getting his judges through a Republican Senate

You really never read about the DNC's big plan for taking back the Senate do you?

and neither do I hear the growing number of Dem candidates talking aggressively about the need to take the Senate, what's up with that?

maybe they think, rightfully, that the voting public does not even know which party is currently in the Senate majority, much less there are 100 Senators, why confuse them?

I have mixed feelings about doing away with the filibuster. When a Party is out of power in all three houses, there needs to be some way to put the brakes on the bulldozer. It's true enough that in a representative democracy, those three houses were voted into power by the people, but the majorities that put them there are only slight- it's not like there is an overwhelming mandate from voters.

And we all know that the bulldozer agenda oftentimes has little to do with the interests, or reasons why voters put them into power in the first place.

Maybe some kind of built-in limitation to it?

Sanders blew past every other announced candidate’s early fundraising numbers in just the first few hours after making his second presidential run official on Tuesday, and he’s expecting to easily hit the 1 million website sign-ups he asked for as a first show of support for his campaign.

“Short of Joe Biden entering the race, Sanders on paper starts off with more advantages than anybody else. He’s got the largest list; he’s got the most intense following that has stayed with him since 2016; he has a proven ability to fundraise from his small-dollar base,” said Brian Fallon, a Democratic strategist who was the spokesman for Clinton, leading the public charge against Sanders last time around. “He’s in the exact opposite position that he started off the 2016 campaign in.”

In true divided government, without overwhelming majority numbers by either party, the filibuster gives the minority party the opportunity to stop extreme laws. Unfortunately good laws are stopped as well. When there exists this type of parity, perhaps the populace is not in dire need, nor has the appetite for new partizan laws.

Remember when the world was coming to an end because of Congressional deadlock and sequestration under Obama? We survived, the economy boomed and the annual budget deficit was lowered substantially.

That said, lets all be patient here- when the Dems get the numbers across the board, with total investigation power and filibuster-proof majorities, I'm all for legally pinning down the sick fuking Republicans and punching them in the face until Nancy's arm falls off.

Considering that the Starr/Whitewater investigation went on for 4.5 years into shady investments in which the Clintons were bit players,
it is clear that dozens of different investigations of trumpy's hundreds of crimes are needed, in each of which he was the chief.

You could also compare Darrel Issa's nonstop 4 years of partisan hack attack dog BS hearings on minor issues of the Obama administration. (benkwazy?, IRS, solar panels, etc.) If that deserved 4 years of attention, then Trump's scandals deserve 400 years of attention.

"The post—which earned him widespread scorn—may have been the first sign that Chaffetz was misreading the national mood and especially the attitudes of his largely Mormon constituents. While they largely disliked Clinton—she won a mere 23 percent of the vote in his district—they also harbored concerns about Trump, whose ethical conflicts and curious associations with Russia were rapidly piling up.
On February 9 2017, Chaffetz got a wake-up call when he returned to Utah for a town hall, where he was besieged by a hostile, heckling crowd, shouting “Do your job,” and “We want to get rid you.” These listening sessions are typically subdued affairs, but this one drew hundreds of angry constituents, who demanded to know why the chairman of the House oversight committee was not doing more to investigate President Trump. (A pair of Utah Republicans recently bought a billboard on the highway to Chaffetz’s Utah office that asks, “Why won’t Chaffetz investigate the Trump-Russia connection?”)

Chaffetz, who during the Obama administration reveled in launching headline-grabbing investigations, suddenly seemed reluctant to unleash his committee’s typically aggressive investigative powers. Trump’s conflicts of interest, he claimed, fell largely outside his jurisdiction. “I know it’s surprising and frustrating to Democrats, but the president is exempt from these conflicts of interest,” he told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. As for the Russia connections, particularly those related to former national security adviser Michael Flynn, Chaffetz said there was no need to further probe Flynn because he’d been fired. “It’s taking care of itself.” "

I feel that Bernies bus left in 2016. He missed it. This will be Joe Bidens time.

Here is a pictorial voting guide below to help us all determine what kind of as#@&%es we are being. Hope it helps.

He has tried twice, and his candidacies went nowhere (well, sort of true, he did end up as veep).

I’d love to see him stumping for the nominee.

There are good and bad things about the filibuster, but I don't see it lasting much longer. The filibuster is not in the constitution and it is not even a law. When 51 senators adopt the rules of procedure each term, they include it. At any time 51 senators can get rid of it. So it is really nothing more than a custom that has been chipped away at.

I think it is unlikely that the filibuster will be passed into law. It is only a matter of time before it is gone.

And as far as those who will weep its passing: the filibuster dramatically changed over the years. It was not traditionally a mechanism that meant everything in the senate took 60 votes. It was a way to raise a temporary stink. Somebody actually had to be on the floor speaking and no other senate business could happen. You might be able to delay legislation for a day or two, but eventually a simple majority would get a chance to vote.

He’s a 77-year-old socialist who’s abrasive when he’s in a good mood, and who’s still blamed by many Democrats for Hillary Clinton losing to Donald Trump. But go ahead, try to argue that Bernie Sanders isn’t the front-runner in the 2020 Democratic race right now.

He might well be the front runner right now, but it is a long race. Hillary was a huge front runner in 2008 and almost no one knew who Obama was.

I sure hope the democrats don't nominate someone who would be mid/late 80's by the end of a second term and that include Biden.

"You could also compare Darrel Issa's nonstop 4 years of partisan hack attack dog BS hearings on minor issues of the Obama administration. (benkwazy?, IRS, solar panels, etc.) If that deserved 4 years of attention, then Trump's scandals deserve 400 years of attention."

Man, ain't that a fact.

From the standpoint of functional government, where legitimate issues are investigated for reasonable cause (and not simply political theater), the higher road here would be for House Dems not to quid pro quo Issa's bullshit investigation efforts during the Obama administration.

But it's awfully hard to resist the temptation not to, especially since there is soooooo much valid bullshit that has come down from this administration & Trump, personally.

I was ambivalent regarding McCabe's role in all this. His ravaging of Trump on this book tour is unprecedented and Trump is ready to explode.

Do you suppose that cartoon is supposed to emulate someone in particular?

One could say it applies to Bernie (maybe not), but Scott Adams is a well-known Trump supporter. Hmmm.

I am generally opposed to people who are over the age of seventy running for elected office. I would make an exception if the dem nominee was Biden, or even Bernie. However, it's important that they choose a running mate younger than sixty, to me at least.
Somewhere I read that a Biden/O'Rourke ticket was a possibility.

Good post, dingus.

The fact that so many people think these old codgers are the best candidates says plenty about the state of the Democratic party.

WTF people? You're going up against a hugely unpopular President. Arguably the worst ever. And you want to bring a 77 year old to the fight?

Joe & Bernie

Time to bring in some new blood. Maybe even Beto. All those candidates now in Congress are regularly part of a circular firing squad. New blood. If Trump wins re-election, especially if it's because the Dems blew it, the public outcry we heard in '16-'17 will pale in comparison to what happens. Don't blow it!

BTW - Carter wasn't old when he took office. Just 52.

As dingus points out, Dems have done better with youthful candidates.

Also, don’t pick someone because it is their “turn,” e.g. Mondale, Hillary, Gore.
