This guy loves the big stage. RNWFHD in 2008, and Freerider in 2017.
We can see a pattern setting up here. I realize he is constantly climbing, bouldering, and soloing other outrageous lines, but what will be his next big "career" type solo? Weigh in and let us know what you think.

I hope nothing. He's lived on the edge long enough. Time to dial it back some.

The grapevine told me that he wants to push his limits, aka Adam Ondra, at the hardest technical climbing (with protection.)

Has anyone heard this idea floating around? Did I dream it in my sleep?

The Nose. He is so familiar with the route already, and he can take his sweet time projecting it like he did with Freerider.

Onsight big mountain new lines. Somewhere where the rock is relatively solid and the options are plentiful on any given mountain.

He is going to host an extreme sports talk show. The interview couch will dangle 500 feet above the valley floor.

I just hope, that what ever he does, he lives to a ripe old age..

He has done pretty well so far.

He said he will never base jump. He should take up paragliding like his bud Cedar. Dean Potter had started taking paragliding lessons. I was really looking forward to seeing the amazing things Dean might do with a glider.

I talked to him a little a few months ago. I met him a few times back when he set the Nose record with Hans.

He was focused on promoting the film and said he didn’t really have a plan for what’s next. Of course he may have another secret project up his sleeve though.

I tried to steer him towards no more cutting edge solos :-) by saying something like “it’s great that you did El Cap because it’s so monumental, there’s no obvious next step in free soloing so are you going to focus on hard free climbing big walls like the Nose or the Dawn Wall?” And he said maybe.

Obviously his talent and passion are for big free solos. There’s not many similar passions like that that have a logical end game. It’s also very dangerous so there’s a good reason to scale it back now. But he’s young and I wonder if anything else will satisfy his talent and passion so well.

I’d say middle age based on his personality quirks and the general path of most high end climbers.

^^that's funny Jon!^ For myself, Honnold is on such a different planet from me that I won't comment on his thing at all. I'd be fearful that my comments, encouragement or other bullshit might enter his headspace at the wrong time.

Imagine dude being on thank God ledge or the fingercrack on Touchstone unroped and start thinking about Toxic Whitenss and such sh#t?

Breaking News

He's decided to give all his worldly possessions to charity and start over by becoming a used car salesman in Fresno.

This is the word on the street here as a chipmunk told me this.

Naked, nighttime, winter solo of West Face Gasherbrum IV, “the Shining Wall” , though it might not be shining much in winter.
But seriously, I hope he reaches middle age. It would suck for him to become a statistic or an “I told you so” for non-climbers. And no matter what happens, he will always be a badass.
Alex, if you do this, I want some credit:)

I wonder how many nuts Honnold used to bribe the chipmunk.

Should have told him to tell Werner that he had insider info on the 911 conspiracy.

I'd like to see colder and/or higher. This Yosemite stuff is good and well for starters, but its sea level and board shorts. Plus there's bigger walls.

How about trango, Asgard, Jammu or seerdengpu?

The weather and the remoteness dont lend themselves to the required practice needed to get the route dialed. Maybe thered be an easier rated climb which would be fun but it wouldn’t be a step up from free rider. If you think about it free rider was the perfect opportunity. Hard enough to make it mind blowing and out of the reach of 99.9999999% of all humans on the planet but easy enough to be doable by one guy.

Agreed. And now that El Cap has been free soloed, the risk/reward equation would be substantially altered. One could do a harder route in purer style, thereby taking on more risk. But, it would be hard to get anyone like Jimmy to film the effort, and any documentary that came out would not have the impact or novelty factor that Free Solo has.

Mark Synnot has said:
I talked to free solo pioneer Peter Croft about it... There’s nothing else as far as he’s concerned. He said El Cap was the final step.

getting on a rope after free climbing is like going to prison

I would think it would be liberating, you know, to be able to enjoy the climbing without that death penalty thing going on. He seems pretty comfortable on a rope with a worthy partner, Caldwell for instance.

The following is a fake story I made up.

Alex Honnold, who has been called the world's greatest free climbing rock soloist, has announced today that he has nothing left to prove to himself by continuing to free solo rock climb and is giving it up. He said he is going into obscurity to escape the media limelight, and the feminine toxicity that was provoked by his recent movie, Testosterone Unchained.

Fake story.

He wants it to be known that he is sorry that the movie may have upset some of the pubic and that he is only guilty of having taken what has been freely given to him. In addition, he said that he appreciates the negative feedback from his movie and has taken it as a good wake up call, and a good time to get out before I become just another splat headline. He said he doesn't know what his next challenge will be. Whatever I do next, he said, will be challenging because climbing is the only thing, besides reading and writing, that I have ever done. Saying, see you later, he walked out the door.

This story is fake.
