Hey! My wife wants to move out and I want for her to have the house. It’s a six month trial separation, in our words. I love to be in mountainous places and I’m a decent builder, been doing it for fifteen years now. So, if anyone needs a builder for the winter, and has a good lead on housing, I’m all ears. I’d obviously bring my own tools and a reliable vehicle. My heart aches, space and a project to focus on would be great. If you’re interested, I can send you contact info. Thank you.

Feck dude,

Sorry things aren't quiet on the home front. Glad they sound civil at least. If you get stuck, come to South Lake. Things are up in the air here too, but Tahoe should be stable, at least through the winter. I have an extra room. It's old and funky, but in a decent location (furnished).

I'm trying to finish a shed. I need to put a floor in the bathroom, and hopefully get a claw foot tub installed too. Replace a couple of old windows? There may be some projects a bit further away. I may have to get a house ready to rent. Without my uncle around anymore, professional trade experience would be appreciated.

Most all the projects can wait really. At least, you can crash until your next phase. I don't have the references, but it seems that many here have vouched for you here.

Season passes are on sale for a few more days. The mountain may still be hiring. Let me know.

brett.fredericks@ g mai l. you can figure out the rest.

p.s. people complain about using avatars. reality is that some work will fire you for what you post on the internet. Not all anonymous typers are jerks (I hope). again, never had a name for myself.

I don't mind avatars. Lots of people have nicknames. What I don't like are people hiding behind avatars and being as#@&%es to others. If you are going to get in someone's face then you should have the courage to let them know who you are.

Best wishes to you Brandon. I know that you will find a good place.

Park an old motor home in Paradise, CA and learn how to build complete homes from the ground up. Construction labor is in such short supply in CA, you will be well compensated. All while helping a devastated town come back to life.

The most common complaint uttered by people in Seattle is not about rain, the useless Seahawks, or anything about Donald Trump. No, by far the worst thing about living in Seattle now is the complete impossibility of finding anyone to do any sort of residential construction.

Anyone who can figure out which part of the hammer should hit the nail is working overtime.

Lots of downsides, of course, but construction workers are in demand.

I place to stay and work. Reno's 1 hour to Donner, 2 hours to the Leap, 3.5 hours to Bishop, and 5 hours to the Valley.

Brandon,

Load up your tools and your rig and get moving. From your posts it seems like you have a pretty good skill set and frame through finish guys are in very high demand out here. Finding work will not be a problem.

I’ve received a few good offers already, which seems incredible. Yes, I’m a frame to finish guy, fairly well versed in carpentry, but I’m no rock star. Right now the issue is whether or not I should be three thousand miles from my wife while we have some space. I could allow her to find her own place, and see her weekly, or I could let her have the house and spend months away from her in a place that makes me feel more whole. It’s a big decision to make, and I’m not taking it lightly. Rick, I’m the type to put politics aside. Our nation is better than that I hope, and I know that I am. Hope that makes sense, I’m trying to make sense of the whole situation myself. Thanks for all the kind words everyone, they’re super appreciated.

Brandon, my wife and I have been together for 36 years, through thick and tin, for better or worse. We could have given up and gone our separate ways numerous times, but something deeper kept us together to work things out. It sounds like you are rightly reluctant to cut the cord. Work it out man, you both have to give and take. Separate not, unless you want to end it.

fwiw: there may be some middle ground. If you can fly out, you may not have to spend months away. Seems like many construction jobs don't necessarily last for months. (tools may be an issue). Things are often temporary, mountains seem to have the ability to refresh our perspective too. Best wishes.

Good luck sorting it all out. Everyone who would give you advice (myself included) is bringing in their own experiences and circumstances, and only you can know the details for your own path forward.

If you intend to have children, you should know that whatever exists between you and your significant other, good or bad, will be amplified and perhaps new aspects of each other's personalities will come out that can change the dynamics of the relationship. Look carefully at their relationship with their own parents and family of origin for some clues on what that might look like.

In my case, I needed certain things to change in the marriage, and I made it clear by saying that I'd rather be alone than stay with these things. She felt threatened by that and didn't change at all; I moved out but still came over every day to give the kids (2 and 4 yrs old at that point) baths and dinner and read bedtime stories. Then I'd leave after they went to sleep. That period was the nicest their mother had been to me for years. But whenever I brought up talking about the things that needed changing, she said "we can't fix anything until you come back." So after a year of not cultivating any support structure for myself, I caved in and came back. In a separate bedroom in the same house, and wife's bedroom (our old bedroom) was locked. And every day, one of our friends was always around until she went to her room and locked the door and night. I hung in there for about a year more trying, but all the problems from before were still there and more with no hope of changing, so I finally left for real, fully unburdened in my heart. I found out years later that she had been having an affair with that friend, and I still don't really know why she wanted me to come back. I'm still unhappy about the overall situation that created for our kids, but for myself it has ultimately worked out better. I've been with another woman for 10 years and the difference in my daily happiness is night and day. If my first marriage had not been so difficult, I might have lived my life without learning to face my childhood demons and reaching a much better level of emotional maturity and stability. We're all still works in progress though.

The point is... I guess there is no point :) Except to follow your own heart and what you think is right, and when you are ready your life will unfold in the way that you have created space for it to unfold.

Good luck on the work front, and use this time to reconnect with whatever parts of yourself that you like and that you let go of while trying to make the marriage work.

And if you end up in Reno, that leaves a lot of potential winter ski/climb adventures as a midpoint between Reno and Los Angeles, and I want to try and get out more than in years past.

Take a break from it all and go somewhere else for 6 months. It'll do you both some good.

If your wife says she wants to leave you and you're saying you can't be away from her, you are in for a world of emotional hurt. Hang tight, buddy.

It took me many years to realize how powerful and deep the re-patterning of our relationships with our parents is. For example, one morning long ago I realized it wasn't an ex girlfriend I was dreaming about - it was really my father - presented to me in my dreams in a way I would never interact with him emotionally growing up. It had nothing to do with her. Deep stuff, and understanding it is the way forward.

Cleo, I’m interested. Hell, I’m interested in all ideas. Maybe I can bounce around and knock out projects for people. That seems like a really fun idea. I’ll be bringing everything but the big stuff. I’ll have a compressor, and all the associated tools. Chop saw/table saw, not so much. I’ll be leaving those at home, as my vehicle is a ‘91 Volvo sedan. The truck I was fixing to buy fell through, so it’ll be the Volvo. I have a huge heart and it’s so excellent to know that a lot of you out there have one equally as large as mine. Even Santa Cruz would be ok, need to relearn surfing. The core ST community is so damn cool.

If you (or anyone else) needs a work truck I have a great work vehicle available. 2001 Ford F-150 4WD with a 4.6L engine. I picked it up in a family transaction gone bad. I had to bail my ex out of a transaction. Drove it back from Farmington NM with no problems. over 300k miles on the odometer, but someone put a new engine and driveline in it at some point apparently because it is very tight. No issues. Since taking the picutes I added a Class 4 receiver hitch to allow towing up to the trucks rated capacity of 8,000 pounds. Smogged and registered in CA. I wanted to get 3,000 out of it but would let it go for $2,500 to someone on ST. Will remove the gun nutter sticker at no additional charge

We sure need a new cedar fence built with an RV sized gate....everyone is too busy to bother with "small time" fencing. We also need a pergola built, small cement patio, etc. They are all working on the new home construction. We've been trying to have it done for 6 months now...

Heck I know an old guy that had his shoulder replaced yesterday and he's trying to rebuild his shop that collapsed a couple years ago due to deep snow. He lives in Sisters on 10 acres and you might be able to set up a rig on his prop for the winter if you help him a little. -although I can't really speak for him.

I'll repeat; central Oregon is building like crazy here. New houses going up daily and 300,000 sq' of commercial space slated to build in Redmond alone.

Guess all I'm trying to say is your life is wide open. There's a huge need for your skills across the US. Pick a path and GO down it!

PS Nice truck and sounds like a heck of price for a F150 4X!

Truck has some slight funkyness to it (seats and some tweekage to the front end, no frame damage though and the hood opens and closes fine). It spent its life around Farmington NM (desert) so it is super clean. Brand new battery and exhaust system (everything south of the cat). Great for the job site.

I was skeptical about driving it back from NM, but the trip convinced me it was solid. I would really like to put a shell on it but places I go are 400-800 miles away and the gas would kill me.

Hi Brandon,

I just talked to my wife about this... we have a fairly large amount of work to trade for a spacious private living area (semi-furnished) with own bath, shared kitchen. No separate entrance right now, but maybe you could fix that? ;)

I like to cook and fine to make a bigger quantity and share meals.

If you have a reason to be in Southern California this winter (2-3 hrs from Jtree depending on timing/traffic, 1 hr from cragging on Angeles Crest Highway, 3-4 hours from Lone Pine), might be a good fit. The house is only ~6 miles from downtown LA as the crow flies, but with the hills where we live it seems more suburban/wild (some undeveloped hilly areas around, views of Santa Monica Mtns, Ojai & Santa Barbara Mountains, Verdugo Hills, San Gabriels).

The work:
~ 1500 to 2000 sq ft of cripple wall that needs seismic retrofitting (shear paneling nailed in specific pattern). It has 22' high walls under our main living area... at same time, help us convert it into a kick-ass home climbing gym! All crack widths, including a variable width and angle chimney built into a corner for the bracing. My wife is a climber too, totally on board.
Rebuild a covered jacuzzi balcony that currently has 2-3 story tall wood framing underneath that is rotting/termited. Rebuild the roof of that balcony to be the floor of another balcony on the main living area, and convert a window to a sliding glass door there.
Rebuild a stairway on the side of the house to that balcony
Rebuilding another existing balcony railing (about 40' long), with about 40-50' of air below, so difficult to access with scaffolding. Some rope work would probably make more sense or cantilever some scaffolding through the windows on the floor below
Build a new balcony on the floor below, perhaps integrated with part of the seismic retrofit plan that braces the joists on that floor to an uphill concrete retaining wall with deep earth anchors. We already had plans drawn up and signed by the structural engineer for that piece. Again, pretty high off the ground so either huge scaffolding or more rope work
MONSTROUS amount of T1-11 siding that is getting weather beaten, in need being stucco'd over. Can maybe create section of multi-story outdoor climbing wall (underneath the covered jacuzzi balcony).
Relocate a chimney to a different corner of a room, so we get more windows to enjoy the view - a big sliding glass door to the balcony

Depending on how many hours you're putting into the work vs. just living here, we can probably kick in some cash. I can point you in the right direction to set up a company to be more official if you want it that way, to have workers comp insurance, a health plan tax deductible as a business expense, etc. I'm not an accountant and don't really know what I'm doing there, but I've set up 2 small corporations before.

No smoking/drugs at all in the house though, or too close to doors/windows. That would be a show stopper for us. Alcohol in moderation is ok (e.g. not more than a beer or glass of wine or two a day)

Timelines for the work are all flexible... we've had the house for 5 years now and have't gotten around to it.

Really need siding on our house in Valley Center, San Diego plus new windows if we could swing it. We have a motorhome (older and not fancy, fridg does not work)you could stay in on our 2.5 acres.

It's a one story home, @ 1700 square feet.

Just throwing it out there. You have a lot of better offers. We have a nice location and our family here is a good one. 45 minutes from beaches, Woodson, and 2.5 hours from JTree. Also about an hour from climbing in South County.

I’m fully down for one week of remodel or renovation work in each spot. More if the project warrants it. Honestly, Clipper, my heart is only good for a month in SLT, I have so many friends there, and I don’t want to spend too much time away from Llama. All I want is a distraction via work for a couple of months. Everyone who chimed in with work and a place to crash (backyard with tent space is ok by me), let’s talk. Clipper obviously gets my first two weeks, traveling here and there on the west coast with my tools sounds like something I need to do.

It’s encouraging to have a solid skill set that can get me a job wherever I want. That was the whole premise I based my life around 25 years ago, when I chose not to attend college.

Time away from the wife is going to be difficult but the general consensus seems to be that for me to head west for a couple of months could be a good thing. I sure hope so, the thought of returning to my old stomping grounds gives me trepidation. I’m going to miss the hell our of my beautiful wife.

Also, Lynne, and Nutjob, I’m totally interested. So Cal is a little bit out of the zone where I know what’s up, but I’m pretty adaptable. New places interest me for sure, and I’ll have tools. Lynne just gave me a good reason to bring my siding nailer out with me, so that’s a good thing. I actually enjoy siding.

Everything I cut comes out short!

A friend of mine and his buddy took up re-rigging sail boats right out of high school. They got their first job and naturally they borrowed their dads tools. They carefully measured all of the rigging and ordered custom cables at significant expense. Order comes in and they go to install them and everything comes up 2" short. They are flabbergasted and after much head scratching they finally discover that dad's tape measure had the first 2" cut off and the end was reattached Before I use anyone else's tape I always look at the first two inches.

Everyone is wired a bit different. That worked for you and that was your story. I have friends who have had so many more relationships and marriages, the highs and lows and different loves they experience - there's a lot of life in that too and sometimes I'm jealous of a much crazier existence than my own.

Holy Holmenkollen! Brandon jump on the Volvo deal. If you don't want it Reilly can I have it?

I have two white ones, a 2004 and a 2005. The 04 I bought at the factory in Sweden.

Dude you can actually work on these things; I've completely rebuilt the one and should be able to keep at least one of them running the rest of my life, using parts from the other.

By the way, all the contractors I saw back then in Norway were driving Volvos. You wouldn't believe what they load them up with. I haul a heavy ass trailer with mine.

Reilly does the all wheel drive still work? They go out frequently and not really worth the repair which is a pain and expensive. My 04 is now 2 wheel drive but it's bomber.

I have a room that I will trade for work around the house. Need some trim work, drywall, need a cover built for my climbing wall, door replaced, cabinets etc. 30 minutes east of Seattle. It is just like Colorado but wetter. A lot of good mountain biking and good climbing when it is not raining.

There is quite a bit of building going on with the growing housing market.

If I could have a carpenter for the cost of room and board, I'd form an army and retire in 2 years. Dude needs to eat and buy cars and tools and cloths and maybe a new place of his own. Also, some of these jobs that seem like a job to you could be done before lunch by someone with 15 years of skillz - hardly worth the gas to show up, much less stay the night. Just sayin' - in his interest.

Hey Brandon, if you end up in SoCal and want more work drop me a line at my name here at gmail.
We have a comfortable Casita trailer in front of the house in Oceanside and a full bath in the garage. I also have tools, ladders, etc. on site.
Our house was bank flipped 6 years ago and some (most) of the work that was done in between was total crap. I have a second floor deck that I'd like demo'ed down to just the structure and then have new decking and railing installed. Also, some side entryway steps that are similar construction - just needs to be majorly redone. The crew used doug fir 2x4s for the decking and then painted the top so after 6 years it's already warping, rotting, full of termites. We paid the right price for the house though so I can't complain.
Marriage is hard man. Let's just say, I can relate. Last week my motto was: marriage isn't hard, it's impossible!

Holy sh#t, people are hurting for carpenters apparently! I’m going to have to put together a spreadsheet of people and places. And cars. Very interested in the XC70 Reilly. I’m leaving in the morning for CO. Going to be there for a week and spend thanksgiving with my brother (who just closed on a place in Gunnison), his wife to be, and my dad, who lives just outside Boulder. I really hadn’t considered So Cal, but warm weather sounds pretty apppealing right now. Maybe I can split my time between the two California’s, lol. I’ve got a ton of friends in North Tahoe, but Clipper lives in South Tahoe. Still, it’s only an hour drive. LA is a place I’ve never been, maybe it’s time to visit. Since my timeframe is somewhat limited, I’m going to have to choose a couple of projects to focus on rather than spread myself too thin. Work quality suffers when you do that, IMO. Again, thanks everyone. The ST community is pretty excellent.

As an aside, I’m probably going to have Sunday and Monday free in the front range. If any Coloradans want to meet up, I’m all ears. Thebravecowboy, Crimpergirl?

Edit; By limited timeframe I mean 2-4 months out there. Four is just fine if the work isn’t shitty and the clients are good people. I do good work in a timely manner and at a reasonable price. Unless it’s a day or two of work, I’d be an idiot to not ask for money in exchange for work. Put together a price for having a random stranger stay at your home, and I’ll put together a price for the work. We can meet in the middle, but I won’t allow myself to be taken advantage of.

Ha! I rode MTB competively for a half second in the early nineties. Then, I got a drivers license and my 100 miles per week dropped significantly. Then, in Tahoe, my friends were headed to Moab to ride and encouraged me to go. I acquiesced, and smoked all of them on a hardtail. Porcupine Rim with biggish drops and Portal trail with no dabs. I was legend on that trip. Haven’t ridden since, but a bmx and MTB background probably didn’t hurt either. Ski racing for years and years was probably helpful as well, line choice is key.

Edit; What’s the FR? Sorry, I’m so out of the loop these days.

I have no idea what going rate is. I don't charge much on the local street corners so I guess my standards are not applicable. Depending on cost I would be will to pay for a few projects to get them done. Forget the hard tail advice. Full sus is the way to go once over 25. I do have a spare hard tail that I ride in the winter. It definitely is not warm here. I may still have project come summer. If you are at all interested.

Pretty sure that my employer is a dick. I’ve had a feeling that I was going to find something different for some time now, and it came to a head when he lied to a server in a resturant who works with my wife. Now, I’ve had some health issues, but I’ve never lied to my boss. It’s a war of attrition right now, I know he needs me on site, but I’m refusing thus far. Maybe it’s petty, but the trades are booming and it’s finally occurred to me that I don’t need to get yelled at for someone’s personal problems. Happy trails, all!

Hey There, Supertopians - Just wanted to update those who may not have been following Brandon's last several posts that his course has changed. Since he has posted openly in this thread:
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=1087464&msg=3160896#msg3160896

I hope it's not going to be a problem for me to write that he has realized he needs to quit drinking, and after going to doc and beginning a medical detox, he's gone into rehab. I don't see a reason to post anything more specific to that - what I know is what he and a friend have been posting to the above thread.

However, I did want to mention that his financial situation was not good, and he and this friend have set up a GoFundMe to help cover the costs associated with that situation.

That GoFundMe Page is at:
https://www.gofundme.com/help-brandon-mayo-with-his-recovery?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=email&utm_content=campaign_title&utm_campaign=donation_receiptv5&fbclid=IwAR2DOnKTzVVIdEi2wM-8qR7LIaFQ6Edc_Nbhp8tl-rsU0hYqVrBAz7HigiE

I'm going to create a separate thread that includes the above, as the funds are going to be helpful in minimizing the stressful situation. When one is getting sober, the less other dramas in life the better.

Even $5 helps. I know some may not have even that; we have to take care of our own needs first. But if you feel you can do some assistance, please either go to te GoFundMe to donate, or read a bit on the first link to get some more information on why the funds page has been set up.

Thanks, fellow Supertopians!

A good idea, especially if he posts there and has shared a bit about these issues. I don't know that he has, and also I don't really have much a presence there, so I don't feel comfortable doing that.

I did post to my personal FB page though, as I have several AA friends I got sober with years back. Plus my family sometimes gets a soft spot for things like this, though usually they have their own obligations and fundraising for their own causes that takes up their available funds.
