Seems interesting. Has TPR found investors?

That seems like a perfect fit for TPR to own it. They have all the personnel up there already, could be run very efficiently.

That's what I was thinking; if TPR has a few investors it makes sense.

TPR has a group of investors from Mammoth Mtn. They bought Tioga Pass Resort some 12 (?) years ago and now Saddlebag which right now does not consist of much. It will be fun to see how this plays out. The area is an awesome place and great because it is not in the Federal Parks.

Hugs to TPR and their vision!!!

I thought that the Tioga Pass Resort was ruined by heavy snowfall and that the owner is struggling to rebuild and get it open again. It is owned by an investment group?

The main building at TPR was well underway to being restored when I saw it in late August.

aspendougy,

Yes, owned by a group and if you go on Face Book they give updates on the restoration once in a while. Went by in September and one of two major bridges was not only restored but enlarged. It's a process and it's happening. Cheers to Tioga Pass Resort! So many miss you!

Nov 11 update on their Facebook page.

Hey everyone. Well...we lied. We promised a summer of regular progress updates and then mostly stayed quiet. Honestly, it's a bit unsettling to see the lodge (especially) gutted out as it is now. It's sort of like watching a loved one undergo surgery.
It was a tough summer. A lot got done, but not nearly enough to allow TPR to run in 2019. Instead, the repair/restoration/improvement work will continue next summer while the resort remains closed. It's critical that we make the most of the situation at hand towards the goal of setting the resort up to keep hosting guests for another 100 years.
Now for a big announcement: We've recently acquired nearby Saddlebag Lake Resort inclusive of its very popular water taxi operation. As many may know, SLR was once a "sister resort" to TPR. TPR and SLR are distinct settings which compliment each other well, and we hope to foster a certain synergy between them in the coming years. Meanwhile, the plan is to run the water taxi and possibly a minimal food & beverage operation at SLR next year while the primary focus remains on the TPR project.
That's it for now. You can expect more frequent engagement here in the coming months. There's some change blowin' in the wind up in the pass. We'll share some of those plans with you as things progress.
Thanks as always for the your enthusiasm and support

Indeed. Makes sense Mammoth would get involved. Thing is, will they keep TPR and Saddlebag reasonable or turn them into another over priced place only the wealthy can afford.

Never understood why a climber would take the boat taxi. For dayhikers wanting to see 20 Lakes Basin, get it. But for a climber the walk around the lake is a good warm up.

i used it for early summer skiing. but it saves way less than say the echo lakes boat taxi. at a little over a mile it seems like a waste as long as the hiking or skinning is good on the west side of the lake.

Hey Lynne,

Did you mean the corporation that owns mammoth mountain itself is who bought TPR or did you mean that the group that bought it is a group of people who live in the town of Mammoth Lakes?

That place is a long ways from the nearest Home Depot. I can’t imagine trying to get anything done up there on any sort of budget or schedule.

There is a home depot around the corner in Carson. It's but a hop, skip, & jump from Bishop & even closer to TPR.

John M, things change so I will just say that when I started working at TPR I was told that a private group bought Tioga Pass Resort some of which lived in Mammoth. I don't know if they all did.

I'm glad they are taking their time to make it lovely and last for many more years. The bridge that was redone is awesome!

Lynne, The reason that I asked is because there is bad feelings for how the corporation that bought mammoth mountain runs that mountain. I didn't want that rubbing off on TPR. It sounds to me like some people who live in the town of Mammoth lakes bought the property, because the corporation that bought mammoth mountain is a major corporation.

maybe that's why they ran out of funds for the rebuild.
I'd rather see towns people own the TPR than a corporation.

Never understood why a climber would take the boat taxi.

Save oneself a mile or more each direction stumbling over an unmaintained "trail" contouring a reservoir to get to the destination. Done it both ways many times, sometimes to save money, other times to save time or effort. Unless all motorboats are excluded (not gonna happen), water taxis should be in. Your choice to take it or not.

Lots of $$$$ in Mammoth. And folks that live in LA/SF with mega money with vacation homes in Mammoth.

We'll see what they do with TPR and Saddlebag; my guess is they will do what developers do.

Did a google search as to who bought TPR. This is all I could find:

https://thetahoeweekly.com/2018/08/cohen-named-president-chief-operating-officer-of-squaw-valley-alpine-meadows/

"Cohen is a graduate of University of California Santa Barbara and of Northwestern University School of Law. He started his career practicing law in Los Angeles and then Mammoth Lakes before purchasing Tioga Pass Resort, a back-country ski and summer resort, with a group of other investors, and running it from 2002-10."

So did he sell it in 2010?

Lots of speculation on this thread, or perhaps misunderstanding. Will try to clear some things up.

Ron Cohen managed TPR (ran it) for a number of years. Then Joe Hannigan took over and managed this wonderful place for about 8 ? years and the last year before the hard winter and the lodge was damaged Dave Levy managed TPR.

I never took the boatride. At first I let my pride get in the way. But after some friends convinced me it was an experience to be experienced, haha, I was always up and away before the dang thing was open for business.
I rode the boat once, but the walk is not bad.
do they stop running the boat in the afternoon?
both times that I was on the north shore, around 4pm, the boat wasn't there.

Good move on his part. Some of us are still stuck practicing law in Los Angeles.

No love for the water taxi. I've found it much preferable to the hike, which is OK, but not nearly as interesting as the stuff that awaits you at the far end of the lake.

Since we are talking about Saddlebag, what happened to the lake this summer? Was it's being empty when I visited in September due at least in part to the sinkhole near the dam? The hole was filled when I went back in October.

The boat ride was great fun for my wife and especially our sons when they were young to expedite hiking the beautiful recesses on the far side.

One time, riding across to do North Peak, there were a few gusts of wind that literally blew the boat 90 degrees off track a few times; scared the sh!t outta everyone, including the operator. My partner, Ron Felton said, “F*ck! I’m putting the life vest on my pack! It’s eveything of value I own!

Jon, no shame here! Once, there was a search that included Young Lakes, where I was scheduled to patrol for a few days. The helicopter was shuttling searchers back to Tuolumne, with a Young Lake pick up scheduled. I somehow talked them in to letting me hitch a ride out there. I scurried back to my cabin and grabbed a cold six pack to bring along. No shame!

I did research at McCabe Lakes in 1988 and needed to go out there about every 2 or 3 weeks. Taking the boat was the way to go!

By the way, my battery made it home via FedEx disguised as a stereo receiver, thanks to your sound advice and tape!
