1. Caligula: I didn't do my research on a first date in college, and things went bad FAST. I thought it was a simple story of a crazy emperor! Needless to say, there wasn't a second date. Note to self: check the director (not that I would've necessarily recognized Bob as a porn guy).

2. Eraserhead: I know, it's all cool, vogue noir art, but I was alone and it was just fukking depressing and huge in front of me. Out.

I was seven. I was terrified. I was crying with my hands clenched over my eyes. So were my younger brothers and sisters. We left within the first 20 minutes. What could my mom have been thinking to take us to such a film?

repost:
i arrived way too early for construction season in fairbanks one year. parked and proceeded to frost up a bivy van big time. trudged around all day in arctic gear on less of a budget than a self respecting street person would settle for. finally pawned something and treated myself to what i anticipated would be couple of hours of indoor heat across town watching whatever movie might be playing that night. half way through TOWERING INFERNO i bundled up and marched back to the van. other than flame, all i remember of that movie was loud stressed up music, screaming, shouting, hollering and more screaming, most of it in a stairwell with hoses and some more screaming

Cliffhanger.

I thought it would have a bunch of silly climbing scenes that I could laugh at (and it probably did), but it pretty soon became clear it was just a celebration of mindless violence set against a background of climbing, made for no other reason than to give people who enjoy watching mindless violence something to watch.

And a couple of others, for the same reason.

Blade Runner.

I actually walked out twice. So many respected close friends raved about it, and I gave it a second chance to no avail. I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep before seeing the movie. That's what I wanted and expected, with all its subtle nuance. Not!

A Boy And His Dog. After 5 or 10 minutes La Femme thought it was gonna turn out
badly for the girl. Dunno if it did or didn’t and don’t much care about post-apocalypse
films anyway as they are so ludicrous.

Watched Blade Runner at home - pretty banal but haven’t told my neighbor that.
He thinks it’s the greatest. Still trying to get him to watch El Topo. Told him its
like Like Water For Chocolate, but deeper and rougher, but he hasn’t seen that either.

The Firm. After what seemed hours it was still going no where. I was glancing at my date. Out of the corner of my eye I could see her glancing at me. "Want to leave?" Yes!"

Reilly, it didn't end well for the girl friend, but it ended OK for the dog. It's a good read, typical Harlan Ellison.

We Were Soldiers about the battle of Ia Drang with Mel Gibson.

I don't mind war movies, and Gibson has done some good ones. But this one was very violent, and the sound in the theater was wayyyy loud. After about 20 minutes it was just overwhelming, so I left.

Damn! That reminds me that Cliffhanger isn't the only movie I've walked out of. After about twenty minutes in the theater, my then wife, our two kids, and I all -- more or less simultaneously -- all realized that just about anything would be better than having our minds evaporated by any more of the stupidity of that film.

Dead Ringers - the 1988 version - only movie in a theater I’ve ever walked out of.

I guess this doesn't count, but my mother was visiting and my wife and I took her to a local production of 'Hello Dolly'. The theater group had put on some good shows, but this one.... When intermission finally came I finally spoke up and suggested maybe this wasn't too good. Didn't want to offend my mother, who is a lovely lady, but fortunately we all had the same thoughts, so we walked out. The production was worse than a high school musical.

If we’re into rentals, then hands down Pink Flamingos. My condolances if you saw this at a theater and had to exchange looks with another live human being.

So I’m telling a coworker about Something About Mary - the hair product scene - I can’t give it away, but I’m trying to warn him - he’s like “Is it worse than anything in Pink Flamingos?” I didn’t know so I rented it sometime later - never discussed it with him.

I didn't think a Boy and his Dog was that Bad. Certainly no worse than a lot of other 70s sci fi.
And Dead Ringers is well-done horror. As is much of Cronenberg's other work. The subject of Dead Ringers is pretty horrible, as is the imagery, but it's well done.

As far as grueling films that I didn't walk out of...had to watch Shoah for a college class. 9 hours of interviews with Holocaust survivors, split over two nights. Rough going, and not sure I could/would do it again, but it was worth it.

I have to vote with those who think reading Lawrence's book, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, leads to enjoying Lawrence of Arabia.

I watched it for the 3rd time this fall & must admit it moves a little slowly from time to time, but it captures the essence of his endeavors quite well. And besides that, I always enjoy watching trains getting blown off their tracks, & Arabs charging on camels.

Where would we be now, if Lawrence hadn't worked as a liason between the Saudi tribes & the English, & the Ottoman Turks still ruled from the Black Sea to the southern tip of Arabia.

I'm with Aeriq:

Glengarry Glen Ross.

Didn't walk out but did turn it off--one, long, tedious f-bomb filled soliloquy after another. Gah!

Some interesting hate going down here. Alien? Star Wars? Pretty classic stuff for most folks, unless, of course, you can't handle sci-fi at all. In general, I'm having little patience for the now so common over-the-top violence. Besides being gross, it's mostly pointless and a poor substitute for real dialogue and story telling. A perfect example is the second season of the Netflix lawyer series Goliath with BB Thornton. I loved the first season about the alcoholic lawyer who crawls far enough out of the bottle to win a big case, even if there was some pretty violent scenes here and there--at least it wasn't totally in your face. The second season? Stupid, stupid psychopath dismemberment BS--an absolute failure of creativity. Skip season two. Gah.

What's your opinion on Forbidden Planet 1956? I read the book but it may have been a 'novelization' of the movie. The movies Alien and Star Wars are not classic sci-fi. More like Stalker (a good movie) versus Roadside Picnic, by the Strugatsky brothers.

Forbidden Planet is good. Obviously looks a little dated by now.

Alien is a good movie by almost any standard. But it is more of a horror movie than sci-fi.
I'd argue that Star Wars is certainly a classic, as is Blade Runner. They both influenced the genre tremendously, and when folks think of sci-fi, it's probably those two that come to mind as much as any movies. That's pretty much the definition of "classic". It doesn't mean something is the best movie, more like most influential. Solaris and Stalker are good, and also influential. But not influential on the level of Star Wars.

Star Wars is a based on ancient myth like Homers epics, (hero gets a wizard/mentor, magic sword, sidekick, refuses the call to action, etc) with western and space opera elements. People don’t realize Lucas wanted the rights to Flash Gordon and couldn’t get them. Star Wars was always meant as a serial for kids and people take it way too seriously IMO.
