View from the TV couch at about 6:30 PM tonight, during a TV political debate.
I was diverted by the alpenglow coming through our north windows.
And the old Republican was not as pretty as the outside view.
Harley (the cat) was hanging with me, but was bored with the debate.
Impress me with better couch views.

Donini for the win!
Never had a TV but I have a saying from my favorite chair at my cabin, I call the view out 3 different windows from that seat, "North Fork TV". The larch needles are falling right now but my favorite program is all the swirling snow, some windows have mountain backgrounds and another just towering trees. But, I need a photo!

The lost battle I'm referring to is the knickknack battle. That's part of your view, right? How do you dust or do you just wipe around the edges?
It's actually a sign of a full life. A curio here and a souvenir there, brought home and displayed to capture a memory.
Nonetheless, it's a battle. Ive done the math for my wife:
1.7 knickknacks per trip x 2.1 trips per year x 30 years of trips = 107.1 knickknacks!
I've fought to keep my spaces simple and spartan but my wife is slowly overwhelming me. The curios, family photos and trinkets are slowly amassing. My dream of an austere Japanese style interior is slowly morphing into a Turkish bazaar.

Great photos folks! Views to envy, for sure!
Contractor! Re your mention:
The lost battle I'm referring to is the knickknack battle. That's part of your view, right? How do you dust or do you just wipe around the edges?
Sigh. Yeah, about 10 years back, after a lifetime of collecting antiques & mineral specimens aka rocks, my wife & I decided it was time to start letting go, before we became defined as hoarders.
We rented a 8' x 8' display case in a Boise antique mall & started selling on EBay. Unfortunately I did so well selling higher end pre-1900 bottles, I bought more, lots more, on line during the bargain times of the 2008-09 recession. Then my bottle sales tanked, but mineral sales picked up & I started buying minerals to sell online & at the Tucson Gem & Mineral show.
Meanwhile Heidi had sold most of my mother's hoarde of costume jewelery, but kept collecting & selling antique purses & compacts, until the bottom fell out of that market.
We did two outside antique sales in the Boise Antique mall parking lot this summer, which helped substantially reduce the several hundred low-interest pre-1900 bottles I had retained from childhood bottle digs, & also got rid of a bunch of other stuff at bargain prices for the public.
So------the end is in sight! Another 10 or so years of selling the stuff will likely see most all of it gone. I just need to quit bringing home mineral specimens.

Well, so much for “take nothing but pictures”...
So everywhere you go, you strip the earth of it’s interesting rocks?
Yeah, they are so much more interesting in your living room than in situ in nature.
But this way, everyone gets to enjoy them...
Put them back where you got them, or just admit you are a selfish person who doesn’t really care about other people’s experience on this planet.
I have noticed you are quick to post opinions of moral certitude, but lack the sauce to back it up. By your own admission, you make a practice out of making the world a less beautiful and interesting place.
Stop it.

Well Fritz, your knickknacks are in good taste and each a little prism to another time and another place.
Our hand carved, condiment bowl set from Costa Rica often reminds me of how my wife completely blew me off in that curio shop near San Jose. I may have even recited my knickknack formula to no avail.

ECF! My, my my.
Most all of my mineral collecting is at obscure old mines, where the crystallized specimens I like, were not of interest to the miners.
I haven't noted eco-tourists wandering those mines admiring the admittedly hard to find specimens I cruelly steal from the American people.
Just as soon as I see them, I'll give my specimens to them.
By the way, people that think like you, are a major source of amusement to geologists.

Just thought I'd clear up a couple of things here.
Yeah, Wallye wants us to think he's an audiophile and stuff, with this finely crafted but somewhat deceptive offering:
... but perception is decidedly not reality.
Our spies reveal, from a discretely embedded position behind Walter's couch, this, to be the true shape of things over at Chez Walleye:
And speaking of perception, given that Fritz is all about the view from the couch,
We got all curious and stuff, and decided to see what the outside condition of Fritz and Heidi's little hideaway there at Choss Creek really looks like,
So we loaded up the spy cam …
… And by the crack of noon we rolled the mothballed Hughes XF-11 out from the 'ole tin shed and headed out Idaho-way for a look see.
Just a second, please, I'm having trouble with the confabulater's throw out bearing ...
It's all quite puzzling ...
Okay ... as it turns out, them two honeymooners have been holding out, because, as you see below, what we've uncovered is that ...
Choss Creek ain't so chossy after all:

Tar! Per your question: Who are those stoned dudes?
The Inukshuks!
Inspired by one in the Royal BC museum in Victoria, that impressed me in the early 1970's, I shared in the construction of one during a 1976 visit to Mt. Deborah & nearby mountains.
When Heidi & I moved here in 1991, we had lots of nice basalt & a small cliff for a stage. Although I confess to having zero inclination for art, I can stack stones, & over the next 3 years I built the inukshuks, which except for a dowel that holds the cat tail erect on windy days, are all free-standing.

The view out my kitchen window is mostly blocked by the foliage of my massive Syrah vines, now in their fall colors. I planted them in 1999 and the biggest one is now about 130 ft. in length and 3" in diameter 50 ft. from the base of the trunk. This year they (only 6 vines) yielded enough wine to fill a typical wine barrel, so in a year or so I'll be bottling about 25 cases.

Tarbuster - my backyard soils are basalt cobblestone gravels mixed with stream-reworked loess. The vines get all the water they want from my lawn sprinklers so have grown to mammoth size - like kudzu in the the southeast US. This year I harvested 800 labs at 23.5 Brix, which is pretty amazing. My friends at Rotie Cellars are making the wine this year. It's currently finished malolactic fermentation and is ageing in a neutral French oak barrel at the winery. The big question is: What do I do with 25 cases of wine?

Well, KP, keep me in mind for helping out with your dilemma! I recall sampling some product at a house in Albion a few years back...pretty nice!
Wind Dance...I hear good things! Amazing...
Cheers!

Man, I love a meaty, loamy Syrah.
23.5 Brix: with my limited means, I'm translating that to mean good ripeness and a fairly decent extraction. Aging in that French oak probably isn't exactly slumming it, either, ha!
I might have tasting notes from a Domaine de Vallouit Côte-Rôtie.
All those northern Rhône Syrah really spin my platter; probably tasted more Crozes-Hermitage (being more affordable), one of the more memorable being an unfiltered Domaine du Pavillon Mercurol, as well as some Cornas (certainly the more muscular of the Syrah I've had the pleasure to nuzzle up to), a sprinkling of Saint-Joseph, and a couple Vacqueyras (one of the latter showed burnt rubber on the nose; maybe the Montirius).
One of the more memorable and well-structured domestic Syrah I recall was a Neyers, Napa Valley, Hudson Vineyards.
Also, speaking again of California, Novy & Siduri do great stuff with that varietal, if a little on the hedonistic tilt.
It blows my mind that you get a 25 case yield out of some monster backyard vine collection. Growing "like kudzu" ... Very funny.
What could you possibly do with all those cases of wine?
Sounds like a real dilemma. Though I know you aren't exactly kidding about that kind of volume laying around, still, my heart goes out to you!

Loyd, your posting passed right over most of these people’s flat heads. House on the meadow for Curry management? Nice.
Valley employees thought Curry was so evil until Delaware North took over. Delaware North helped people realize how good they had it with Curry.
Now, with Aramark, it’s even worse. Aramark has set new nadiers in employer behavior.
I was at a party at Falkenstein’s in Foresta a couple evenings ago. Some of the long-term valley employees were telling Aramark horror stories. It sounded particularly bad for the mid level management types.
Oh, for the good old halcyon days with Boomer and the rest of the rat-pack that actually looked out for the employees (mostly).

Flat heads. Flat Heads?
Now I'm hurt, Don. Real hurt! Don't you know we're supposed to be creating safe spaces for each other?
When I saw Lloyd's view, after first relishing the rarity of it, my next thought was: hmmm. Orchid, Poinsettia, and other thoughtfully positioned flowers, candles, and thriving house plants.
Aside from it being a Christmas scene, must be a woman in the house!
I also wonder, Lloyd, how did you get that shot so clean, with all of the variable lighting conditions inside and out. Nothing is overexposed, except maybe the snow is a little hot.
It almost looks like a poster strapped to the wall! But with the retracted venetian blinds added in to complete the trompe l'oeil effect. Not bad for a snapshot!

Tarbuster - I'm also a big fan of Croze-Hermitage and Cornas, that's one reason I planted Syrah. You should try to get your hands on a Syrah from the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, some of the most assertive and distinctive terroir on the planet.http://www.rocksdistrict.com Brian in SLC - I was going to name the COR route "Last Dance" and my wife talked me out of it. I don't think I'm going to be doing much more choreography in that neck of the woods. It was super windy on the day of the FA and I put it up with the assistance of Jay Goodwin, who also helped with Rain Dance 20+ years ago, so "Wind Dance" it was... Maybe I'll bring some of that vino to Fritz's get-together next summer...

Okay, KPWalla, I just looked up that AVA:
It is named for the city of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, and a unique alluvial fan resulting in rocky soils with "baseball sized" basalt cobbles[6] covering the earth,[4] and is notable as being "the only AVA in the United States whose boundaries are defined by the soil type"
Immediately reminds me of the galets for which Châteauneuf-du-Pape is known:
The characteristic terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from a layer of stones called galets ("pebbles"). The rocks are typically quartzite and remnants of Alpine glaciers that have been smoothed over millennia by the Rhône. The stone retains heat during the day and releases it at night which can have an effect of hastening the ripening of grapes. The stones can also serve as a protective layer to help retain moisture in the soil during the dry summer months https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rocks_District_of_Milton-Freewater_AVA#cite_note-FOOTNOTEKimbel2014-7
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teauneuf-du-Pape_AOC
Looks like Rotie Cellars has plots within that AVA. Next, I might give Tertulia a look see ...

Tarbuster - Good call. The recent plantings in the Rocks District were largely prompted by the similarities of its rocky soils to those of Chateauneuf. However, the rocky soils of the Rocks District are much deeper and rockier than those of Chateauneuf and the cobblestones are made of dark basalt rather than light-colored quartzite.

10 four!
I've got a call into my local wine shop to see about sourcing some of those Rocks District Syrah for Thanksgiving.
Fairly boutique I suspect, (those producers from the looks of things), and some sell direct, though maybe not using distributors just yet. We'll see: thanks much for the nudge!

Yeah, not cool to be dissing on your cat.
Especially because he can't sit at your computer and lash back at us!
There he was, minding the view from the couch, and his own business.
Besides, I'm sure that wasn't his most flattering pose in the cat couch.
Berg heil, Harley!

Fun Fact #7. Orange tabby cats love to eat. Fun Fact #8. They tend to be low-energy.
On the one hand, this laid-back “cattitude” can make them excellent lap buddies and snugglers. On the other hand, it’s just another precaution to remember, since it may make them more at risk for becoming overweight and obese. A quote from Jim Davis (creator of Garfield) comes to mind ~ “In my head, the sky is blue, the grass is green and cats are orange.”

Hugo has his winter weight on. There was a squirl right outside the door a few days ago nibbling on a slice of bread. I snuck the door open and tossed Hugo at the squirl. Now that certainly should have been an unfair advantage yet the squirl took off like a shot out of a cannon with Hugo lumbering after him. Hugo got burned worse than a linebacker trying to cover Jerry Rice . Absolutely pathetic performance on his part. I am quite certain that he slept the entire day today while I was at work. No doubt dreaming about catching that squirl…

Harley (the cat) is still preferring an inside view, as our snow comes & goes.
Front porch & decision time. An inside cat-nap was the decision.

Back porch cocktail hour view on Sunday, after a long day of killing weeds, burning, & my first lawn mow of the year. Harley (the cat) was digging it.
Heidi hunting semi-wild asparagus we planted along the spring creek about 26 years back.
Note the asparagus stalks. They add up & need to be picked daily this time of year.
