I’m sure a lot of folks remember.

I was traveling from Sacramento back to Santa Cruz. Stopped at Valley Fair...WHAM.

couldn’t get further than Los Gatos. The next morning at a church shelter where they were serving breakfast one of the Uber conservative religious guys was ion spewing that it was God’s damnation on unholy California.

Of course we had learned the epicenter was Santa Cruz. I wasn’t sure what I’d find.
Much of Santa Cruz was a mess. I had a broken TV and mirror. I was lucky.

Sylmar is more of a memory for me. Felt it all the way down in Irvine. Very long and rolling. Was beginning to think it wasn't going to stop.

I was at Cabrillo College outside the mail room just about to enter when it hit: epic, and I mean epic. Strangest thing so close to the epicenter was the way dust was rising from the buildings. Took an hour to get home. The next day was so eerily quiet. No traffic. Just folks walking around like zombies in a daze. Santa Cruz has never been the same.

hey there say, all...

man oh man... will never forget THAT...
and, i was NOT even there... :O

my folks had just stepped off the plane from san jose,
to US-- in south texas... EDIT-- folks got there three hours, diff, our time... about 8-8:30

we took them home, to our little place and SOON as we
got out of car, walking up to door:

my oldest SON comes running out, proclaiming that there had JUST NOW!
been a bad earthquake in san jose-- and my mom was very surprised,
and my dad, was really stunned, from concern, as the night went on--

he SAT in front of our little tv, with all of us, watching the news all night... got lots of info from san fransico, finally and oakland, etc...

but-- NONE FROM SAN JOSE... there was not power, is what they said, so
they were not getting news... (that came later, that san jose, faired
pretty good) ... something about being on a 'plate' ?? and shifting,
and not up or not lifting??? (was that right?) ...

later, oh my-- the bridges, :( freeway situations, :(

and, of course, santa cruz...
years later, when i went to santa cruz, i could see where all the
damage was done, :(

yes-- paul... never will be the same...
but, thankfully, it IS still there...

thank you susan for bring this to mind...
i never forgot about the folks stuck under the collapse... :(
of freeway... :(
we, later got family reports, to see where everyone was...

*anyone that know matt-- he was under my sister's house, in san jose,
working on something...

*walter and his wife, were driving somewhere in los altos,
and people came running out into the streets as 'confetti' fell,
and they thought it was a STRANGE CELEBRATIONS -- but the car
was bouncing and they realized it was NOT confetti-- it was LEAVES...
and they were running out, waving arms, for other reasons... :O

*think my sis, was at work, for walter's old office and she
said the water lifted out the decorative pool and the walls, shifted...
(they were earthquake-made-for walls...)

*not sure where the other-two-brothers were, but, mom did say
that my youngest brother would have been on that freeway, but, he was helping someone move, instead of 'going wherever it was' that was going to go...

here is an anniversary of 25 years link:

edit-- dad was so relived, far later into the night, when we learned that his home was safe, and san jose, was okay...

(it's like -- he finally goes on a trip somewhere, and leaves home--
and 'earthquake' ) *though, our concern was for EVERYONE there, in all
the mess, as well... not just ourselves... we were just very thankful...

candlestick park... and the game... WORLD SERIES...

but-- i did not know this...
this was the first time in 27 years that it was being help, as a
home game... :O SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS...

*I HAVE NOT seen this yet... if it is bad taste, i will take it
down... but, this was 'quake time' film... after the 'game filming
stops' the news reports come on...

this is about 49 min... after it stops from the quake...

A family friend had his entire house lurch off the foundation and slide down a hillside in Soquel- nothing but bottom plate and 16d nails pointing up where the studs used to be.

1/4/82 was still fresh in the minds of many when the earthquake hit- I lost some classmates (San Lorenzo High near Felton) in the mud at Love Creek on that one. Santa Cruz had a tough spell there.

The next day was so eerily quiet.

Yes! I forgot about that. Driving over Highway 9, because 17 was closed, I recall as you....so very quiet. No birds chirping, no “forest” sounds. There was still a ton of dust in the air.

I fully expected to see the steeple of Holy Cross toppled. When it was still standing I felt a ray of hope.

Irvine is about 70 miles from Sylmar and getting the actual rolling and tumblng number is interesting because it seemed longer to me

I wasn't afraid, just couldn't believe how long it was lasting

My cat at the time was named Tommy (shortened from TomFoolery). I didn't inquire how he felt about it.

Worst story I heard was that a guy got out of jail two days before the quake. He died in the 880 collapse.

A few folks said that virtually all the guards in the Oakland jail disappeared after the quake. Sittin' in jail, locked up and waiting, must have an experience. I ain't never been experienced.

Others from west Oakland said they walked towards the collapsed freeways to see if they could help. They were shot at, turned awawy by the police.

Then, there was some looting too I'm sure... no mas eh?

I do remember the day and moment of that 89’ quake. I was in the Valley and climbing “Poker Face” w’ Dan, who did the FA. I was leading and about 3/4 up the route, 20’ or more above the last protection. My toe on a small but good edge, I paused to chalk and look upward to the anchor. Next I knew I was on my back screaming down the slab. Dan was up and launched downhill to shorten my fall. The fall had been long enough to kill my spirit, but instead I hung there saying “I’ve no idea why I popped off, I was on good holds”. I headed right back up and completed the pitch. Soon after Dan arrived interested in seeing how his original anchors were fairing. Below a man came walking along and looked up when he heard us talking and yelled “you two might want to get down from there as there was a major quake @15 minutes ago”. I looked at McDevitt and nodded “probably”. By the time we were back to employee housing where Dan and Sue lived it was all over the news.

I can commiserate with MGuzzy's experience a bit. I was in So Cal for '89 but I was living just two blocks from epicenter of the Northridge earthquake in'94. I was attending CSUN and working in a glass store at the time... needless to say- the entire school fell down so the degree never got finished and glass repair work had me working 80 hours a week for the next 2 years.

I missed it, but I had a good buddy that lived not too far from the epicenter in a mobile home.

He was actually out on a fishing boat, had no idea it had happened until he came back in. His mobile home dropped off the cinder blocks and killed his cat that was below it. And he was pissed that he didn't even get the benefit of experiencing it.

Bad as this quake was you should hear my friend’s stories of surviving the Great Alaskan Quake. It shook for four and a half minutes! He said he and his brothers were thrown out
of their beds onto the floor and that it was shaking so hard they couldn’t even crawl out
of their bedroom!

I was the Intramural Sports Director up at UCSC and was managing some games on the Upper East Field overlooking the bay and the city. Standing on the field with a disc in my hand getting ready to throw the pull to start the next point when it hit. And boy did it hit. I had to turn sideways to ride the waves as the field was full of flowing ripples. I looked at the building I worked in next to the pool and it was shaking violently. Huge waves splashing from the pool soaking the deck. And then silence. A long eerie silence. Everyone was safe. I looked around and assessed the situation. "What's the score of your game? Okay finish it up".

After the games concluded I swept up all the gear and returned it to my office. I had a bunch of friends in town from Colorado who stuck around after the big Ultimate Club Regionals which we hosted the previous weekend so we all got into our vehicles and rolled down the hill trying to get to the Santa Cruz Brewery on Front Street to watch the World Series game between the Giants and the A's. When we got near the bottom of High street it became very clear that all was not well. We parked our cars and walked down into town.

When we made it to downtown it was like a war zone. Many of those old buildings (Cooper House etc) were made of brick masonry, pre earth quake code. They all fell like a stack of cards. It was bedlam, people who were either stunned (as we were), in shock or in a state of panic. I lived just past the harbor on 12th ave so we walked the distance over to my house.

The next day was fascinating on many fronts. The only store that was open in my neighborhood was Days Market on Seabright. A long line out of the door and as the shoppers emerged they were laden with donuts, water and beer. It was unseasonably hot reaching the low 90's by the afternoon. And Santa Cruz was on an island. No phones, the only highway out of town would be by going south to Monterey then north up 101. So the locals either spent the day fixing up the damage from the quakes or went to the beach so laze the day away.

The craziest story I heard was one of my best friends asked for the day off from the Whole Earth restaurant at UCSC. He was told that the only way he would get a day off was if a natural disaster struck. He called his boss the next morning and asked if this constituted a natural disaster. His request was honored.

(one of those where, yes, the LAND did split in front of someone
and swallowed her child, :( it was beyond breaking ones heart) ..
