Figure this post is worth putting up on my old account because it's in the spirit of the more wild adventures I often got into when I was younger!

I wanted a project that was a little bigger and more "out there" this year (or at least out there for a while!). I recently attempted the California 14ers on foot/bike in a week. I managed to finish in 8 days, 8 hours, and 39 minutes for a new fastest known effort.

It was a personal epic and major adventure with some inevitable big swings in highs and lows and uncertainty and a few times going way deep past "hitting the wall".

I finally finished a write up this week after some quality chill time and settling back down at work. It's almost all here - probably about as close as you can get - good, bad, and at least the interesting stuff! Hope some of you guys enjoy!:

That is pretty audacious. Even more gnarly considering how many of your calories came from sodas and fast food.

Just read it.

Thanks for posting up.

EDIT I could see needing 15000 calories a day on a challenge like this.

I liked the photo of the full steak and egg breakfast with hash browns and a side order of bacon on the left and wheat toast with three packets of jelly on the right. Mmmm.

I just skimmed it but will return to read the whole story

Do you have an overview map for the whole journey?

I think it would help

I found one

For the moment, still have a GPS log here from Garmin.^ Some is also on Strava under my name including the lost signal between Tyndall and Williamson. It was impossible to capture 100% on one device over such a long period of time with inevitable GPS bugs, memory failure, or batteries dieing repeatedly, but that's why I ran a back up 2nd device almost always.

Interesting point about shasta and the clear creek route. I met two brothers at the brewer creek lot over a decade ago going for the link up. Maybe less pedalling time from the east side of shasta.

Does it count if you ski shasta to speed up the time?

Congrats on your record with peaks over 4,267.2 meters.

I'm more into peaks over 4,2713.882 meters. That's the magical number.

I saw a show in Boulder recently about a similar feat as a man did all 52 peaks over 14,000 in Colorado in a month's time. The difference was that he spent more time hiking and climbing and less time cycling than the Californian who had longer biking distances to go. Both feats are awe inspiring.

Read this last night before bed, sat in amazement thinking about it, woke up this morning thinking about it.

I told the story to the wife, whose first response was to wonder about what was in the photo that the work friends sent...? Funny how different details can grab different imaginations.

Great write-up. I don't usually read trip write-ups that long (though I probably should!), but it was really well done and kept me interested the whole way through. I've done all 15 peaks but it took me a few years. I did do the southern 6 in a single trip, but even that took me 3 days and I felt pretty good about it at the time. Great effort!

Very strong work Ryan I applaud your performance. I think that you may want to be careful about calling your trip self-supported or human powered. If you have use a vehicle to assist you in your efforts, i.e. dropping off caches and dropping bicycles off at trailheads then you should not claim human powered and if you are accepting help i.e. taking food from jeepers and having vehicle support to help with mechanical issues you should not claim self-supported. I like your ideas about how to deal with some of the logistics of pulling something like this off. It shows great ingenuity. Again job well done.
