Denise Mueller-Korenek smashes World Paced Bicycle Speed Record

Denise Mueller-Korenek has become the fastest human to ever ride a bicycle — setting the World’s Paced Bicycle Record of 183.932 mph on September 16 at world famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Mueller-Korenek broke the previous speed record of 167 mph set by Fred Rompelberg in 1995. In a twist of historical fate,

She was in fact pedaling.

Your bird couldn't even fly that fast in an airplane

very silly record - biking while drafting a contrived air pocket.

This record reflects a rider's fearlessness as well as their ability to pedal a bicycle. Yes, the rider is in an aerodynamic bubble, but it is a very small bubble and if the rider somehow comes out of that bubble they can very easily crash and at 183mph I don't care what type of leathers you are wearing it's going to hurt.

The previous record holder, Fred Rompelberg, crashed at 150mph and slid 580 feet(basically two entire football fields) breaking six ribs, his collarbone and his right thumb not to mention huge patches of road rash. Ouch.

How much dust did she inhale back there? 😳
It is pretty contrived, especially being towed up to speed.

BITD i worked with a guy who was track cyclist of some repute. Early in the morning he would hang out at a freeway onramp and wait for a semi so he could draft it!

I've drafted a box truck down a hill at 65. Seemed prudent at 27 years old.

How about a tow-in to crack 200 mph

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/pounds-1m-bike-breaks-record-by-going-nowhere-1597625.html

To achieve the record-breaking speed, conditions were simulated whereby Mr Burford was "towed" until he reached 100mph. The towline was then "released", and he was left to pedal flat out. His speedometer was contained in an eyepatch. The previous speed record for a pushbike is 152mph, set on Utah salt flats in 1985.

The carbon-fibre frame is four times stronger than steel, its metal parts are made from titanium and its bearings are ceramic, producing 30 per cent less friction. Its tyres are filled with helium.

Built for him by British racing car firm Lola, the bicycle also has a chainwheel 2ft in diameter, a rear cog the size of a 50p piece, and travels 150ft for every turn of the pedals.

Bruce presented the risks involved with this - regardless of being in a wind bubble, you need to be an excellent bicyclist to maintain speed and balance under these conditions.

These bicycles have to be towed up to a certain speed because the gears are designed to only operate with leg power within certain speed ranges. It would not be practical to have a gear system that would allow peddling from no speed up to these speeds on a bicycle.

For those who think this is foolish, consider that climbing up the face of the rock with ropes and gear is foolish to many people when you can walk up the back side.

What about being towed out to the drop zone for big waves?

Contrived.

Ski lifts?

Contrived.

Aid lines?

Contrived.

So what, if it's fun?

Most fun activities, like parsing sentences (Hey, I get off on it) are contrived.

And BTW, kudos to Denise!!

Didn’t say it wasn’t impressive, just contrived. Tow-in surfing is ART! 😉

I got over aid climbing quickly.

Ski lifts? MORE VERTICAL!

Klimner notwithstanding, I have yet to see or hear of any ST forum hanger-on getting to the moon, much less walking on it.

It doesn't get more collusional/fabricated nor trumped up than this, eh.

Doing anything at 184 mph is impressive to say the least.

It is especially impressive on 2 wheels.

That must be something when you come out of the aerodynamic bubble at the end and go from no wind to ~180 mph wind with not much transition.

I'd be more interested in the gear ratio of the guy in front of her.

Gear, no fab

Fab, no gear

How contrived, but you want ratios?

Each of a compound bow's two cams features two tracks: an inner track which connects to the opposite limb or opposite cam through cables, and an outer track through which the bowstring runs. As the bow is drawn, the ratio of bowstring pay-out and cable take-up relative to limb-weight and leverage of the cams changes.

Check out this article in VeloNews for the tech details of the gearing.
