I had a dream where Trump was shrunk (so much so that his hands were actually proportional!) after he tried to be the first person to be sent directly into our televisions (to bypass the MSM), and then he was tossed down a garbage chute in the Nut Room after the nut-testing squirrels decided he was a "bad nut.”
Sweet enough for you?

I sigh for those who think Trump is making America Great again.
It's always been great, but less-so under Trump's addled mis-leadership.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer sentiment fell to an 11-month low in early August, with households expressing concerns about the rising cost of living, potentially signaling a slowdown in consumer spending.
The University of Michigan on Friday said its consumer sentiment index fell to a reading of 95.3 early this month, the weakest since September 2017, from 97.9 in July. The survey’s current conditions sub-index of consumer expectations dropped to 107.8 from July’s reading of 114.4.
It said the decline in sentiment was concentrated among households in the bottom third of the income distribution.
“The dominating weakness reflected much less favorable assessments of buying conditions, mainly due to less favorable perceptions of market prices,” said Richard Curtin, the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers chief economist.
“Buying conditions for large household durables sank to the lowest level in nearly four years.”

If you say things just to piss people off, or to troll them, then you are probably going to be outed.
....
So the Trump thread was locked? And here I thought people had decided to take a break from politics. hahaha..
Edit; I liked the taco because most people knew who was who. Few people hid their id. We even have a thread dedicated to who was who. The taco spawned many get togethers such as Sushi fest. I have met quite a few people on the taco. Sure people used ids other then there names, but it wasn't hard to find out who was who, for the most part.
Now we have a number of people, especially on the political threads, that like to insult people and hide behind a false id. If you are going to say stuff, especially about other people, then you should have to courage to put your real name out there.

I am in no way defending those who toss out such ugliness as you quoted. But to say you didn't insult people until you said that you would vote for Trump is kind of nuts. I know you insulted me many times about Hillary and Obama. And that has been going on for years.

The forlorn & forgotten Republicans, who don't like Trump & know the Republican party is going in the wrong direction.
The forgotten Republicans — people like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford and Ohio Gov. John Kasich — have been unwilling to sit quietly as Trump steers the GOP away from free trade, fiscal responsibility, consistent foreign policy and civility.
Isolation and political exile have been their rewards.
Their diminished roles leave fewer Republican leaders willing to challenge Trump under any circumstances, even in his darkest moments.
Fact checkers have recorded an extraordinary level of false and misleading statements flowing out of the White House. And beyond dishonesty, some of the forgotten have decried a disturbing pattern of racially charged rhetoric on issues like immigration, NFL anthem protests and Confederate monuments.
"White nationalism isn't something I'm ever going to be comfortable with. But it is embraced by, or simply doesn't bother, a lot of Republicans," said former Ohio Republican Party chairman Matt Borges, once a Trump confidant who was forced from his leadership post after criticizing Trump in the weeks leading up to the 2016 election.
After Trump's victory, Borges returned to practicing law, while he continues to play a modest role in local politics.
"To me, it became a matter of how much of your soul are you willing to sell. I would be the wrong person to be leading this party right now," Borges said.
Gallup found that 82 percent of Republicans approved of the president's job performance earlier this month. That's compared to just 34 percent of independents and 7 percent of Democrats.
Kasich, who has not ruled out a primary bid against Trump in 2020, said the president's approval is misleading because the universe of people identifying as Republican is shrinking.
"We're dealing with a remnant of the Republican Party. The party is not what it was," Kasich said in an interview.

Cosmic,
I'm sorry that you feel that way. I believe that your judgment of me is based on your unwillingness to forgive me for what you termed being singled out for your behavior. I did come after you, but that was because I believed that you did love God, and hence would be open to seeing your behavior. I may have hit you a little hard, but you were one of the few people on the forum who professed a faith in God and who seemed to truly believe. There isn't much point in going after people who don't believe in God with faith based arguments because they have no basis of understanding. I did not go after other people based on their fatih, because there are few others. Cragman is the only other purported Christina whom I took to task. I did not single out conservatives, even though you seem to believe that. I did try to get others to change their behavior. I could give you a long list of liberals that I have tried to talk to. I have learned that it is mostly pointless, so I will cease and desist. That includes you.
As for forgiving me. I did apologize, but since you don't accept it, I will apologize again. I am sorry if you felt like I was harsh towards you concerning your faith. I at no time ever defended sharprema. In fact I reported her to the mods for her behavior towards you. What I did do was try to get you to see your behavior. If I went too far, then I apologize.
As for your belief that you only became rude towards liberals after they attacked you for voting for trump, then I would say that you have a difficulty in seeing your own behavior. You have projected that on to me, but I see myself clearly, as I did apologize previous and did stop going after you concerning your faith. Behave as you wish. I leave you in God's capable hands.
John
Edit: yesterday I deleted some of my posts to you because it seemed like it was just a side argument, but since you keep saying things about me here, I felt I should post.

The Trump adminstration is touting a recent Rasmussen poll that 36% of blacks support Trump. It's just another lie.
Analysis: No, one-third of African Americans don’t support Trump. Not even close.
President Trump has recently faced renewed allegations of racism.
Many critics have argued that Trump’s attacks on the intelligence of such prominent African Americans as LeBron James, Don Lemon, Maxine Waters, and Omarosa Manigault Newman were rooted in racism. Manigault Newman has also made headlines for claiming that Trump is a racist who uses the n-word.
The White House regularly responds to accusations of racism by noting that black unemployment is at historic lows under Trump’s presidency. Sarah Huckabee Sanders even cited some wildly inaccurate statistics on black employment from the White House podium this week to defend the president from charges of racial bias. She later acknowledged the error.
Trump has also attempted to inoculate himself from charges of racism by selectively citing polling numbers, which suggest he’s remarkably popular for a Republican president among African Americans. The president, for example, retweeted these polling numbers from Rasmussen on Wednesday:
Rasmussen Reports
✔ @Rasmussen_Poll
Today’s @realDonaldTrump approval ratings among black voters: 36%
This day last year: 19% http://bit.ly/preztrack @POTUS @realDonaldTrump
9:19 AM - Aug 15, 2018
It might seem far-fetched that over a third of African Americans would now approve of a president with a very long history of racial insensitivity — especially because fewer than 10 percent of black voters supported him in 2016.
That’s because it is far-fetched. Trump’s black approval rating is nowhere near 36 percent.
Polling firms that have interviewed far more African Americans, and that are much more transparent than Rasmussen, all show that Trump’s black approval rating is much lower than 36 percent.
For example, Gallup has interviewed thousands of African American respondents in 2018. Its polling suggests that Trump’s black approval rating has consistently been around 10 to 15 percent through 2018.
The same is true in polling by Ipsos/Reuters:
Similarly, the polling firm Civiqs, which has interviewed more than 140,000 respondents in 2017 and 2018, suggests that Trump’s black approval rating has consistently been in the single-digits throughout his presidency.

The purists use a Manurah, which allows one day's bullshit to last eight days.
Rudy Giuliani said that Trump can't be expected to testify under oath because, "Truth is not truth".
https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/19/politics/rudy-giuliani-truth-isnt-truth/index.html
In other words, Giuliani said that truth is subjective, and that objective truth does not exist. If Trump says that 2+2=5, he expects people to obediently believe that is the truth.
The (Republican) Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.
George Orwell, 1984
Trump's religious supporters are cheering for him because they believe him to be the anti-Christ figure from the Bible. In their scenario, their support of Trump is assisting God in carrying out his Master Plan. Trump supporters are anxious for the day when Jesus shows up to a campaign rally, body slams Trump onto a folded metal chair, and seizes control of the microphone.
Trump's big tax break has given rich people greater political power, by way of the extra money they have to pervert the democratic process.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/18/us/politics/tax-cuts-republicans-donors.html
This is part of Vladimir Putin's plan for America. He wants political power taken from the people and given to a few rich oligarchs who beholden to him. Donald Trump is a Top Oligarch in Putin's plan. Trump's role is analogous to that of a Caporegime in a Mafia hierarchy, and Putin's role is that of the Godfather.

Hooray! Let this be the politics thread that lives.
Very difficult to see what is really happening in politics. No clear reporting.
Press releases from various camps leave out crucial details and slant to make others look worse than they are.
Media wildly slanted one way or the other and hoping to blow up controversy far beyond what is really going on.

they are judged on their policies and effectiveness.....on this Trump is doing quite well so far.
If that is the true measure of a leader, then getting Italy's trains to run on time (Mussolini), and improving Germany's economy (Hitler), and greatly expanding the Japanese empire (Hirohito), and making Russia a dominant nuclear power (Stalin) are the true antecedents of what Donald Trump is doing.
Trump is drunk on power, and his supporters are drunk on a false perception of what he is doing to America.
Setting aside, for the moment, that Trump is a criminal who is facing multiple Federal and State investigations for everything from tax fraud to money laundering to conspiracy to defraud the United States to obstructing a Federal investigation, here are some of his non-achievements:
America's economy is "roaring" on average, because those at the top have been greatly increasing their wealth, while those near the bottom are becoming poorer. His policies overwhelmingly benefit the upper classes and big corporations that enjoy his public largess and his deregulation of health and safety rules. Trump's economic numbers are consistently shown to be exaggerations and lies, and he attempts to deceive his audiences by declaring them to be better off than before (how many, here, agree with that?). Trump's tariff wars have severely impacted a great deal of the Midwest, which is his core base of support - Trump's answer is to hand out over $12 billion in welfare to them, to ensure that they continue to vote Republican (Californians impacted by Trump's tariff wars can expect little or none of that welfare). Trump's claim to have "solved" the North Korean problem was a complete lie - the Hermit Kingdom continues to develop long-range missiles and nuclear weapons. Trump's border policy was predicated on stealing children from families, and putting them up for adoption at so-called "Christian" detention centers. Trump's policy towards Turkey of doubling tariffs to implode their economy is ostensibly motivated by a desire to obtain the release of a single U.S. citizen; the real purpose is to obey Putin's commands to disrupt western societies whenever possible.
Trump is a total disaster.
If there is even ONE actual, factual thing that Trump has done as president that is not a disaster, or a self-serving gift to rich people and corporations, then put it on the page, right here.
If such thing exists, I am unaware of it.
But, not in the same way that Trump's supporters are unaware of multiple indictments, admissions of guilt and prison sentences already obtained by Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in 2016. Trump's supporters are conveniently "unaware" through the ready expedient of ignoring factual evidence, and believing Rudy Giuliani when he says that "Truth Is Not Truth".

The Assad regime, now in its forty-seventh year, has sworn to crush the rebels, no matter how numerous they are; since 2011, at least four hundred thousand Syrians have died, and roughly half of all Syrians have fled their homes. As the war began, President Obama refused all but the most token support for the rebels battling Assad, fearing a quagmire. Iran, Russia, and Hezbollah rushed into the vacuum and saved Assad. During the 2016 Presidential campaign, Donald Trump criticized Obama’s Syria policy, but since becoming President he has more or less continued it.
There’s hardly been a peep out the Trump White House. The “deëscalation zone” was inaction disguised as action; indeed, for all of President Trump’s criticism of his predecessor, he has made it absolutely clear that he intends to stay out of Syria, even at the price of allowing Putin to make him look like a pathetic weakling.

If there is even ONE actual, factual thing that Trump has done as president that is not a disaster, or a self-serving gift to rich people and corporations, then put it on the page, right here.
NOTHING.
I don't espouse retribution for Trump supporters after Trump is exposed, impeached, indicted and convicted. But, I can imagine that a turbo-charged version of Karma is currently idling, and is ready for the throttle to open.
Lou Dobbs and Sean Hannity should consider relocating to North Korea, which they apparently think is a great place because Trump drools over Kim Jong-Un as if he were a cheeseburger.

Power Crux jokes about Trumps' tweets but the information that is easiest to interpret is that closest to the source. The Trump tweet feed is difficult to read because I can't keep up with whatever media he is watching.
The White House press room is best. Everything they say is then massively distored by the media.
Fortunately, I can understand Trump. He speaks an odd dialect that is very alarming if you can only see a left wing viewpoint. Maybe because I was raised in Idaho. Or perhaps that plus living in Los Angeles for 4 decades, it seems clear to me. Things are not as bad as it seems.
I would certainly prefer a better president but none are in sight.
Keep in mind that from now on, only celebrities are qualified to run for president of the United States.
I am seriously considering a movement to draft Taylor Swift. She is very bad-azz and takes no shat from anyone. Don't care if she is left or right. I think it would be very interesting for Millenials to run things now before they get old and wise like my generation.

I have this thing on my computer called CNN. You can click and watch unedited video of Sarah Sanders, the White House Press Secretary, performing her reality-is-not-reality act. It's raw video, as if you were right there, in person, experiencing it. Whatever distortion you believe to be taking place will only be within your own mind.
It's pathetic and alarming to watch what the White House puts out as official statements.
An entire generation of children are going to be squealing, "But, the President did it".

For Fritz, aka Erdogan fanboi, the latest numbas on Turkey:
Inflation - 16%
Unemployment - 10% (yeah, right)
Current-acount balance -6% of GDP
interest rates - 21%!
Currency - 6 / $ A year ago - 3.5 / $
NONE of these numbas have anything to do with Trump.

Rilly?
What about Trump's doubling import tariffs on Turkish steel?
Oh . . . . right. Trump's increase in tariffs only affects the Turkish Lira, and not those other numbas.
Trump is so cool.
HOW COOL IS HE?
He fixed global warming, all by himself.
Trump is so great.
HOW GREAT IS HE?
He made America great, all by himself.
Trump is so truthful.
HOW TRUTHFUL IS HE?
He created truth, all by himself.
I don't have any video to back up this story, but it's true:
I stopped in front of a house with a TRUMP banner in the front yard. I got out with my camera to take a picture, and a woman watering her weeds stopped what she was doing to look at me. I asked if it was OK for me to take a picture. She hesitated before saying, "I guess so".
In all fairness, California's dry regions don't have gardens. People here have weeds that are lovingly cared for, because you can't talk to rocks.
I put rubbery urethane on a different woman's gloves, so she could care for her loved ones - cacti - without getting stabbed by irritating needles.
The next time I see her, I'll take a picture of those gloves smeared with skateboard wheel resin, and prove that I, too, can create reality out of thin air.

Try reading something other than The Daily Worker. Those numbers are the result of Erdogan’s abject ignorance of both economics and common sense which many of you can relate to. Your collective abysmal reading comprehension also leads to calling me a Trump fanboi, not surprising in view of y’all’s simplistic black and white reductionist thinking. That guy, Erik Prince, is Ditzy Davos' brother. Both inherited a vast fortune, and both are non-attuned to the day-to-day reality of 300+ million Americans. Ditzy Davos is now the Secretary of Education, and is forceful in her efforts to ensure that predatory and fraudulent private schools are allowed to operate without regulation and profit from Federal funds.
Erik Prince, who established the for-profit mercenary military company Blackwater, now wants to privatize the war in Afghanistan with a corporate mercenary force. He wants taxpayers to put that money directly into his already full pocket, because he says that he has a plan that even Alexander the Great couldn't envision.

Hey trumpkins: is maga even correct phrasing now?
The wording is confusing because to be great again you can't be great now but once its fixed and we are great....
I am younger than most here and the trumpkins have taught me that probably my whole life America was not great.
when will I know when it great again because things seem about the same to me
Things may well be about the same for you, especially if you've never had to worry about getting a job. So I suppose if that's your criterion to evaluate the state of the world, you don't really need to post on here or pay attention to anything else, just see how you feel and then you can evaluate the president and the state of the world and anything else I suppose.
But for lots of people, things are looking up. African American unemployment near all time lows, markets near all time highs, ISIS seems to be inflicting less misery on the world than in the past, Supreme Court's looking good . . .
Lots of positive things happening, but now's not a time to get complacent of course.

I see it went from 4.7 to 4.1 since Trump. wow big change. What numbers are great/not great or is the whole greatness thing bullsh#t?
It's all about momentum.
Obama didn't do a terrible job by any means, but he was kind of a downer, and things were stalling a bit.
Trump's basically lit a fire under a lot of people's arses, whether they like him or not. Basically energized things. You can see it in the economy (well maybe you can't if you're not in the labor force, guess you have to take my word for it a bit, but trust me, for those who need (or want) jobs now, things are really looking up.
And for those who live high off the hog from investments and want to keep the tax bill "right sized," things are really looking up :))

Things were already up blahblah and the fools went and stimulated an already growing economy at the peril of larger deficits and more debt- complete idiocy! It was timed to boost GDP right before the midterms. The wheels will come off in a year or two- guaranteed.
I've been in both the labor force and as a business owner for about three Republican versions of the same song- it always ends bad for the people in the cheap seats. So quit giving a narcissistic, treasonous pig credit for signing a budget that he almost torpedoed several times through complete ineptitude- and that's with a Republican House and Senate.
By the way, Obama was for lowering corporate taxes as long as the middle class got a substantial and permanent tax break. The Republicans wouldn't go for that so instead the Republicans gave middle-class a temporary and vanishing tax break that will turn into a tax increase in the next few years while billionaire's will have permanent and unfunded tax cuts (unfunded until they take your social security and Medicare)-winning!

The most important discussion should be about how Putin and Russia have infiltrated the election process, and perverted it to put Their Man in power.
Trump is a Russian asset, in the sense that he does what Putin wants him to do.

OMG! You can't make this stuff up! It kinda makes me feel sorry for Melania. Campaigning against cyberbullying, while married to the biggest cyberbully on earth.
From the N.Y. Times:
Melania Trump Called for Good Behavior on Social Media. The President Unleashed More Attacks on Twitter
Under the banner of her “Be Best” campaign, Melania Trump, the first lady, told a group of cyberbullying prevention experts on Monday that social media “can be destructive and harmful when used incorrectly.”
Just after she spoke, President Trump unleashed a barrage of tweets in which he called the former director of the C.I.A. a “hack” and mocked the effectiveness of the Justice Department, among other digital insults on a day of dissonant messaging from the Trump White House.
“In today’s global society, social media is an inevitable part of our children’s daily lives,” Mrs. Trump said, reading from prepared remarks. “It can be used in many positive ways, but can also be destructive and harmful when used incorrectly.”
The first lady has stuck with cyberbullying prevention as a signature issue despite Mr. Trump’s combative posture on Twitter — he has attacked at least 487 people, companies or institutions since declaring his candidacy for the presidency. His targets have ranged from the department store Macy’s to Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel investigating the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.
Another running theme at the cyberbullying summit was the importance of adults understanding how bad behavior on social media could affect children, and how adults can be good digital role models.
“Let’s face it,” Mrs. Trump said during her remarks, “most children are more aware of the benefits and pitfalls of social media than some adults, but we still need to do all we can to provide them with information and tools for successful and safe online habits.”

Nobody is trying to destroy Trump, he is well qualified to do that on his own. The Mueller investigation is merely trying to get to the truth, and quite frankly Donald is acting like a guilty man. What is so hard about sitting down for an interview and telling the truth. Where was the outrage when Benghazi was going on? We survived that nonsense, and incidentally work is in progress to make legislative changes. I am proud to say that I had a small hand in driving Darrell Issa out of office. Judge Ellis honorably served as navy pilot and sharply rebuked Mueller's team on a number of occasions, so I don't know if the right way to evaluate the Manafort trial is try to link the various actors' military service to anything.
Sounds like the jury is doing the right thing by taking its time and (presumably) carefully evaluating the evidence. We should respect the process, and it's not really the American way to assume Manafort's guilty until the verdict is in. (Not that juries never make mistakes.)
If Mueller can't get a conviction, may be time to wrap things up and move on, it would seem like it may be pointless to continue.

For Jody:
In appointing Mueller, however, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein gave him broad authority not only to investigate "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated" with Trump's campaign, but also to examine any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.
BTW, even if Manafort is not convicted on anything, Gates has already admitted guilt.

Cowboy, I criticized Obama's policies and executive actions. The left's attacks on Trump and anybody who supports Trump or works for him goes WAY beyond criticism of policies. Jeez Jody, have you completely forgotten eight years of absolutely insulting republican insults and attacks against Obama? During his State of the Union address a certain republican stood up and shouted 'You lie'. Come on, the things said about Obama and Michelle were disgusting and unending. During the very first days of his administration the republicans got together and agreed to be against ANYTHING he proposed, even if it was in the country's best interest. They fought against any proposals to mitigate the financial mess we were in just because he was a black man. That's the basic truth and if you can't see that ........
The things being said about Trump are actually reality based. He has been laundering Russian money through his real estate business for years and is about to be caught and he knows it. Do you really want this 'man' as president? He is amoral, unethical, unthinking, egotistical, and unaware of the basis of this countries roots, systems, beliefs, and rights. He's gamed the system for decades, declaring bankruptcy but coming out ahead, stiffing honest working people and their businesses, and finally, gotten involved with the Russian Mafia who have him by the balls. Just look at the evidence that is daily coming to light.
This is the man you support because you 'Hate Socialism'? Most people in this country just want a fair deal with an even playing field. The rich have certain advantages unavailable to we small folk and you're okay with this? That rich persons can set up off shore bank accounts, launder ill gotten gains, avoid taxes, game the system? They don't actually produce anything, except money for themselves. It's disgusting and not what America is about. How much tax money has been avoided by these people while we all pay our 'fair' share? Want to balance the budget? Stop all the cheating.
Edited to add: And here is Mr. Trump, who won't show his tax returns, says he's a billionaire and is proud, proud mind you, that he hasn't paid any taxes in twenty years. Thanks Donald for supporting the country that allowed you to make all that money. Socialize the losses and privatize the gains. Jody, you paid money every year to this guy because he never paid taxes, and he doesn't give a f*#k about you. Loyalty for this guy goes in exactly one direction, and it ain't towards you.

If Mueller can't get a conviction, may be time to wrap things up and move on, it would seem like it may be pointless to continue.
Manafort trial doesn't have anything to do with the Russian investigation.
True, but it may suggest some problems with the basic competence of Mueller and his team--in deciding what cases to bring, or in their trial skills, or both.
As I understand it, the conviction rate at federal trials is well over 90%. This trial is under the microscope for a host of reasons.
If Mueller's team can't get a conviction here, maybe they just had some bad luck (and ran into a very difficult judge). But a lot of people are going to be asking if they've got deeper problems.
And should a federal prosecutor really be crying just because the judge is giving him a hard time!?
Of course this is all conjecture until we see what the jury does--a lot of pundits are saying it's too early to say much now, but if nothing happens tomorrow, chances of a conviction are going to go way down, we'll likely have a hung jury. (There are lots of charges, so we may get a mixed verdict too.)

https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/fintan-o-toole-trial-runs-for-fascism-are-in-full-flow-1.3543375
"To grasp what is going on in the world right now, we need to reflect on two things. One is that we are in a phase of trial runs. The other is that what is being trialled is fascism – a word that should be used carefully but not shirked when it is so clearly on the horizon. Forget “post-fascist” – what we are living with is pre-fascism.
"It is easy to dismiss Donald Trump as an ignoramus, not least because he is. But he has an acute understanding of one thing: test marketing. He created himself in the gossip pages of the New York tabloids, where celebrity is manufactured by planting outrageous stories that you can later confirm or deny depending on how they go down. And he recreated himself in reality TV where the storylines can be adjusted according to the ratings. Put something out there, pull it back, adjust, go again.
"Fascism doesn’t arise suddenly in an existing democracy. It is not easy to get people to give up their ideas of freedom and civility. You have to do trial runs that, if they are done well, serve two purposes. They get people used to something they may initially recoil from; and they allow you to refine and calibrate. This is what is happening now and we would be fools not to see it.
"One of the basic tools of fascism is the rigging of elections – we’ve seen that trialled in the election of Trump, in the Brexit referendum and (less successfully) in the French presidential elections. Another is the generation of tribal identities, the division of society into mutually exclusive polarities. Fascism does not need a majority – it typically comes to power with about 40 per cent support and then uses control and intimidation to consolidate that power. So it doesn’t matter if most people hate you, as long as your 40 per cent is fanatically committed. That’s been tested out too. And fascism of course needs a propaganda machine so effective that it creates for its followers a universe of “alternative facts” impervious to unwanted realities. Again, the testing for this is very far advanced.
"But when you’ve done all this, there is a crucial next step, usually the trickiest of all. You have to undermine moral boundaries, inure people to the acceptance of acts of extreme cruelty. Like hounds, people have to be blooded. They have to be given the taste for savagery. Fascism does this by building up the sense of threat from a despised out-group. This allows the members of that group to be dehumanised. Once that has been achieved, you can gradually up the ante, working through the stages from breaking windows to extermination.
I"t is this next step that is being test-marketed now. It is being done in Italy by the far-right leader and minister for the interior Matteo Salvini. How would it go down if we turn away boatloads of refugees? Let’s do a screening of the rough-cut of registering all the Roma and see what buttons the audience will press. And it has been trialled by Trump: let’s see how my fans feel about crying babies in cages. I wonder how it will go down with Rupert Murdoch.
"To see, as most commentary has done, the deliberate traumatisation of migrant children as a “mistake” by Trump is culpable naivety. It is a trial run – and the trial has been a huge success. Trump’s claim last week that immigrants “infest” the US is a test-marketing of whether his fans are ready for the next step-up in language, which is of course “vermin”. And the generation of images of toddlers being dragged from their parents is a test of whether those words can be turned into sounds and pictures. It was always an experiment – it ended (but only in part) because the results were in.
"And the results are quite satisfactory. There is good news on two fronts. First, Rupert Murdoch is happy with it – his Fox News mouthpieces outdid themselves in barbaric crassness: making animal noises at the mention of a Down syndrome child, describing crying children as actors. They went the whole swinish hog: even the brown babies are liars. Those sobs of anguish are typical of the manipulative behaviour of the strangers coming to infest us – should we not fear a race whose very infants can be so devious? Second, the hardcore fans loved it: 58 per cent of Republicans are in favour of this brutality. Trump’s overall approval ratings are up to 42.5 per cent.
"This is greatly encouraging for the pre-fascist agenda. The blooding process has begun within the democratic world. The muscles that the propaganda machines need for defending the indefensible are being toned up. Millions and millions of Europeans and Americans are learning to think the unthinkable. So what if those black people drown in the sea? So what if those brown toddlers are scarred for life? They have already, in their minds, crossed the boundaries of morality. They are, like Macbeth, “yet but young in deed”. But the tests will be refined, the results analysed, the methods perfected, the messages sharpened. And then the deeds can follow. "

Meanwhile back at the swamp, I'd love to see a show of hands from ST denizens who, trump et al aside who continue to insist "it could have been anyone", believe there was no Russian interference in the 2016 election.
I don't think anyone believes "there was no Russian interference in the 2016 election." It's pretty clear the Russians did a lot of shady crap. But that's not the issue.
The issue is whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians on these actions. Other than meeting with a Russian attorney, to get dirt on Hillary, there's not much there.
The Feds got Flynn, Gates and Manafort for actions that do nothing to prove Trump was complicit in Russia's election meddling.
IMO the Russians main goal in 2016 was to cause discord in the US. As far as US/Russian relations go, Putin didn't have a preference as to which candidate he would be dealing with. He views all POTUSes with contempt. But by aiding Trump, the result would be what we're experiencing. Increasing discord. Increasing hostility between the left and the right. Actually, I think the result is far exceeding Putin's expectations.
We have met the enemy and he is us.
Useful idiots.

You realize that the whole point of the Manafort Trial (besides sending him to prison for life) is to get him to flip on Kushner and Fredo Rump so that the case charging them with conspiracy to defraud the USA and violate election law is air tight, right?

The issue is whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians on these actions. Other than meeting with a Russian attorney, to get dirt on Hillary, there's not much there.
The issue is also was there obstruction of justice to cover it up any conspiracy against the United State. Trump and team lied about that meeting (they keep changing their story when more evidence comes to light), Trump fired Comey and said it had to do with Russia, Trump wouldn't admit there was Russia hacking, Trump won't release his tax returns (not evidence or anything but concerning), Trump is sowing discord in NATO and other transatlantic alliances (which Russia loves). There's plenty of evidence to demand a through investigation which is what is happening. So when Trump yells "partisan witch hunt!" and "the FBI is corrupt" when the evidence demands an investigation and he has been established as someone who lies far more than typical politicians on both sides, and the people in charge are republicans with good reputations, it leads me to believe he is trying to mold public opinion about more damning revelations coming.
Maybe we've already seen most of the evidence and Trumps team just made some bad decisions and they made a mistake trying to cover it up instead of admitting it. Or maybe Mueller has a lot more evidence we haven't seen yet. We'll see what happens when the report is released.

Is Trump really Putin's puppet?
on July 24, 2018, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo testified on U.S. policy toward Russia before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He listed the administration’s actions on Russia, which include:
-213 sanctions against Russian individuals and entities,
-approval of weapons sales to Ukraine,
-expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats,
-closure of the Russian consulate in Seattle,
-and the National Security Strategy that identifies Russia—alongside China—as an adversarial competitor to the United States.
Immediately before the hearing, the State Department issued an official declaration of U.S. policy of nonrecognition of Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

So Manafort jury apparently can't agree on one of the 18 counts.
I'm having a hard time reading the tea leaves on that one:
I'd think if they agreed on convicting him of 17 of the 18, but one or more jurors wanted to acquit on the 18th, the rest of the jurors would compromise as he's still getting convicted on 17 counts.
It seems to make more sense that they're agreeing to acquit on 17, but some are holding out on a conviction for at least one.
On the other hand, the experts who claim to have carefully studied the evidence seem to agree that Manafort is as guilty as they come and clearly so (and I have no good reason to doubt that), so that would point toward a conviction for 17 if not 18 . . .

That would be a good way to get a mistrial. Also impermissible is drawing straws and flipping coins. Jurors are instructed on how to deliberate and generally juries take that responsibility seriously.

Within the last hour we have a report M. Cohen is to be given a plea deal in the Russia probe. It seems
very clear this Congress will not vote for impeachment of this president. In that case we may have a constitutional question.
Can a president convicted of crimes in state or federal jurisprudence remain in office?

No one really knows, but there's a good argument (and likely a winning one) that the president is immune to trial when he's in office, the only thing that can be done is impeachment. (He could be tried for crimes after his term ends, either by impeachment or otherwise.)

A guilty plea is still a conviction though, right? I think it is curious that people keep making excuses for these crooks or try to make them sound less guilty even after they have been caught, tried, and convicted.
I used to work for Theranos and saw the same thing happen with the CEO. She was a total fraud, but many still defend her because they want to believe in the dream she was selling. I can finally say that I never liked her.

U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) and his wife, Margaret Hunter, were indicted Tuesday on charges of improperly using campaign funds for private use.
A grand jury in San Diego indicted the Hunters on charges of filing false campaign finance records, saying the couple misused more than $250,000 after a 1½-year investigation. The Justice Department said the pair used political money to pay for their children’s tuition and spent thousands of dollars at shopping malls, Washington restaurants and surf shops, among other expenditures.

My, my, my!
Heidi & I had gone up to the Sawtooth Mountains & the decadent village of Stanley to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our getting married nearby.
Yesterday afternoon was smoky, windy, & slightly rainy, but we had hopes of the smoke blowing out. At 4:00 PM yesterday things didn't look too bad from our hotel.
We did a little celebrating.
And despite some rain overnight, the smoke was damn thick & air quality was at the Orange level at 9:00 this morning. We had planned a 12 mile hike, but instead came home.
View of the Sawtooths from about the same spot as yesterday, this morning.
Soooo - it's great to see the latest news about Trump's buddies suffering a bit. I may celebrate again tonight.
I Can't hardly wait for Trump's "tweet-storm" to come.
