Good pick, Honcho, best scene in the best movie EVAH! (Well, maybe #2 after El Topo 😉)
Aretha is La Femme’s absolute fave. She’s been watching that scene twice a day all week.

Actually it had a cult following. There was a theater in NYC on 23rd street that screened it every Saturday at midnight.
Gotta screen Blues Brothers again.

The queen of soul touched millions of lives in very positive ways. Her cameos in both Blues Brothers movies are some of the very best scenes on celluloid.
Thank you, Aretha, for decades of giving of the song within you.
What a voice, What a woman
Rest in Peace Aretha, and may God speed.

It took a while to hit me after I heard about it. But sitting in the car, listening to stories about her on the radio, I started crying while I was driving around. Hearing her sing is one of the greatest joys in this world.
Edit: Thanks Hank for sharing that clip! That has long been one of my favorite parts of the movie, in a movie chocked full of memorable quotable parts. Now she's got me smiling again!

How did you come upon Aretha
Aretha is really one of the fascinating stories, because at that time [1960] I was sort of living in the past, you know. I was saying, gee there’s never been another singer like Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith, whom I had recorded in the early days.
But I’ve always been a freak for gospel music. So one day a songwriter named Curtis Lewis came in with a demo of about five of his tunes. The third tune was a thing called “Today I Sing the Blues,” and it was just this girl on piano. And I screamed! I said for Chrissakes who is this? He said: “She’s a 17 year old girl from Detroit.” And I said can she do anything else, and he said she was a gospel singer who sang with her father’s choir with Sam Cooke.
So I said, uh-oh, if RCA ever finds out about her, I’m in great trouble. It took me a while to find out where she worked, because I knew it was in Detroit, and I hadn’t heard the greatest things about the old man, the Reverend C. L., but I had his records on Chess, so I knew that he was a good artist in his own right.
Finally a woman by the name of Jo King, wonderful person, became Aretha’s manager. And she got Aretha to make a full demo, and this time I was even more knocked out. [Goddard] Lieberson was still President of Columbia and I said “Goddard, we’ve got somebody really major.” Mitch [Miller] was also impressed and Bill Gallagher, who was sales manager, didn’t care much one way or the other. But Jo King was a good businesswoman and Aretha got herself a good contract.
When Luciano Pavarotti was too ill to sing at the 1998 Grammys, Aretha stepped in.
In a stunning show of raw talent and professionalism, Aretha Franklin performed the aria “Nessun Dorma” during the Grammys’ “In Memoriam” segment. When pressed for a replacement, that year’s producer, Ken Ehrlich, went to Aretha.

From Barack and Michell Obama:
America has no royalty. But we do have a chance to earn something more enduring. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin grew up performing gospel songs in her father’s congregation. For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance.
Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song.
