Hey TACO's:

My wife and I are itching to get out of Bishop for a while. The smoke is really bringing us down. But BAd Wife does have to put in a few hours work most days, so she needs a wifi connection. We can spend more than half the day hiking, climbing, chillaxing, but she's gotta be connected for about four hours.

Any suggestions for some place that fits this bill, no smoke, and is not epic far from the East Side?

Cough. Cough.

Maybe SLO? I think the smoke is covering most of the state right now. Book a flight to Vancouver and spend a week or 2 in Squamish

How is the summer climbing in the canyons above SLC? Good stuff in both Little and Big Cottonwood.

Yeah, considered that, Mike, but we don't have unlimited plans, so data would get expensive.

Looking into Ten Sleep. Stay at RV park? Looks like you can camp at the Brewery way cheap and free wifi?

I suggest Squamish, BC. Amazing, climbing, and tons of it. Easy to get wifi in town, and a lot of climbing areas (The Chief, Smoke Bluffs, Merrin, the falls) are basically IN town. You could spring for the municipal-esque "Shaw Wireless" subscription and work from anywhere (probably some decent service at the Smoke bluffs!), or just hit up all the cafes and link up! (Personal favorite is Cloudburst--peaceful environment, with ample outdoor seating).

How much data can you need for 2 weeks? You can purchase additional data too. I found that relying on "free wifi" can be a bad choice. Some websites (like Paypal) will not allow connections on sketch service

Hey reilly, I think you need to tell us one more time how you went to Norway and climbed a lot of cool stuff.
Please tell us again!

Flagstaff. Lots of half day options available near a university town. Northern NM is a little hazy but overall air quality looks better than California right now (the Southwest typically has an earlier fire season that ends in early July or so) Lots of half day climbing options around Santa Fe and Taos.

Hadn't considered Flag. Interesting point re. fire season in the SW. Guess the monsoons dampen stuff up. Right now, we're leaning towards 10 Sleep and prolly spring for the nice RV park in town. Looks like a really fun cragging area with many sun/shade options.

If you have comcast internet, you can use Xfinity wifi hotspots, which are quite common. The hotspots are not just at cafes, but you can find them in residential areas as well. Anywhere comcast cable goes, there is often a wifi hotspot nearby.

I second the SLO suggestion. you can stay in my backyard, wifi is free...I'll even loan you the canoe, we're 100 yards from the dock, you can paddle across the bay, walk across the sandspit, and pitch your tent (not exactly legally) overlooking the waves at the south jetty...just can't make a fire out there, might attract attention. If you pulled the canoe up high enough, it will be there for you in the morning to come back, haha. Not a heap of climbing but plenty of great stuff to do around here, great place to be. dunno how the messaging system works here, so feel free to drop a text if you need help with where to stay (actually dead serious about the backyard, also have a futon in the office).

Hilarious, Biotch!

Wow, HeschMonster, that's a super generous offer! We love SLO, and I always thought that if I won the lottery, which I don't play, that would be on a short list of places to live. Kinda far from the mountains, tho. Yeah, love the place. I think we're keen on a more climbing-centric outing, but maybe a rain check? We do have a cute 30 lb cattle pup that is kinda surgically attached.

- Skaha (check when the Ironman is?)
 Squamish
Washington Pass / Mazama (if wifi available in Mazama. otherwise, have to shuffle further downstream the Methow)
 Leavenworth
 Telluride/Ames
 Back of the Lake
Limestone out of Ely, NV? (and close to Great Basin NP too, for some all around adventure)
City of Rocks, ID (a bit of a drive to town)
 Revelstoke, BC
Slocan, BC (some cragging outside of town, and for full day climbing, car-to-car in the Valhallas).

A few years ago I did a trip starting in Seattle, and most of the locations would have wifi nearby:

 Vantage, WA
 Valhallas, BC (out of Slocan)
 Revelestoke, BC
 Skaha, BC
then back to Seattle. Would have been nice to add Yak Peak out of Hope, BC too.

Some cool ideas here. Dang, haven't been to Leavenworth in about 25 years. Fun place. Skaha is very high on my list, too. Maybe this fall. Freakin' oven in there now. I think we've settled on Ten Sleep. RV park in town, then drive up to crags for the important stuff.

Another vote for Vedauwoo. Exceptional 4g, free or cheap camping. Easy to get to( getup toI 80 and take a right on Vedauwooroad exit I can point you to climbing partners.
Not entirely smoke free at times. But clearer than Bishop certainly. Much (!) cooler temp wise
