It was posted on Facebook that it was sepsis, and she has no idea how she got it. That's serious even in this day of antibiotics. Good thing Susan is tough as nails but wishing her the best anyway.

Oh the cat’s outta the bag.

Instead of being at Mike’s race start I’m in the hospital on IV antibiotics for sepsis. Not sure how it happened but clearly they don’t mess around with sepsis. A new IV bag every three hours.

I could probably walk the Amazon jungles and get bit by every poisonous species and walk away unscathed I’m so full antibiotics.

Thank you for your kind words. I’m feeling pretty well even though the blood tests suggest otherwise.

Maybe once you're on the road to recovery they can pretend it's Friday night and put a little something extra into that IV rig.

Thanks all!

Infection doctor just stopped by. Blood cultures looking better...they’ll keep me here on IV antibiotics until Monday. Every 3 hours a new drip. One of my concerns about this type of protocol is that I build up immunity to antibiotics.

Oh well. Thank goodness I’m retired and didn’t end up blowing a weekend in the hospital.

Good call going to the hospital, Susan.
Sepsis is very serious and sometimes looks like other things at first.
I'm glad to hear you are improving.

My friend Wendy almost died from it a couple of years ago.
https://wendyong.org/2016/08/23/a-description-of-my-sepsis-episode/
(link is actually the text of an article, not her scary experience.
She had it at the next level, septic shock - 40-70% mortality rate).

A new treatment which adds a couple of things to the antibiotics is in use in a few places and being tested. Results look good, but not fully proven yet.

Thanks all for the kind words, music morale boosters.

“Clinically” I’m feeling pretty good. Just getting blood and tests to catch up.

The crux appears that a gastroenteritis virus managed to get into my blood stream, probably via a UTI which then created havoc. Blood tests also revealed a strep virus in the blood. Different from the throat one. The disease doc has tailored my IV antibiotic to the good ole pencillin family. They want to limit as much as possible killing off the good stuff in my digestive system as that presents another whole host of issues. So, the penicillin family appears to be one that can help address my illness while mitigating side effects. Every three hours round the clock a new bag.

I was slated to go home tomorrow but today they found I’m shedding a highly contagious virus. So I’m kinda in isolation now...basically visitors have to mask, glove and gown up. I’m not in a bubble or on a different floor. It doesn’t appear to be a huge deal and is probably the original cause of my gastroenteritis.

So I’ve reached peak boredom, miss my doggie and what did we do before iPads? Hospital food is still hospital food, although they put a flower on the plate. Unbelievable wonderful hospital support staff, and as usual maybe 5 minutes with the docs. However they seem very on top of everything and I get my questions written down in advance and I stand in the doorway while I ask them. I think they’re on to me.

My first night here I thought the people on this floor were really really sick. Much more than me. The few I’d see in the hallway could barely move as they clung with death grips to their walkers. I found out many on this floor are joint replacement patients.

Thanks all...I’m on the mend!

I am feeling quite well. Stamina needs to build back up but gut problems mostly resolved.
I’m on 10 more days of oral antibiotics. I’ve kinda gone Shakespearean with a lot of hand washing, thinking about hand sanitizer etc. I’ve got some basic tent camping coming up with my doggie and thinking about ways to stay as clean as possible. I’ve never been a germ aphobe and I don’t want to become one but having a systemic infection certainly makes you think about things.

Thanks so much again...I am very moved!

Having survived many third world villages (just barely sometimes), the trick is not to worry about dirt unless it goes in your mouth. As long as you can keep your food and water clean, all the dust and camp smoke in the world won't cause you any problems - unless of course you have an open wound. Have fun camping with your doggie.
