I've been getting a feeling that I should be thinking about other possibilities for a home/work/base region. I love where I am, and can't think of a much better situation for myself, and am not actively seeking to make a change, but like I said, I've been getting a feeling. My life motto does happen to be "Leap, and the net appears."(John Burroughs), but I prefer not to be forced over the cliff's edge and wonder how close to the ground I get before the net appears, if I can avoid it. If I can't avoid it, well.... I do believe.
Here's what I "have:"
 primitive shelter at no financial cost, April through October, on beautiful lands. Physical cost of acting as caretaker that includes very minimal efforts.
seasonal part time work which allows me time to work on my own projects in between interactions with customers
This allows me the flexibility to pursue my own small venture, which is very important to me.
That is pretty much what I would like to replace it with as well. I am not looking to bank money at the expense of time. I need my time, to work on my craft and the business that goes along with it.
I am thinking a caretaker gig near a decent sized town in the southwest at a bit of elevation to keep from broiling in the hot months, with either a bit more work for pay than I have, or the option to have a seasonal job nearby, which would also be low key and include down time as part of the job. I do NOT need, nor want, a house with utilities to be paid and furnishings to be managed. Unless they are included as part of the package. Seriously - a primitive cabin on someone or some organization's land holdings that need a bit of oversight works fine.
Places I have liked are Prescott, AZ, Flagstaff, AZ(too cold in winter, though), Moab, UT(too hot in summer, though), Grand Junction, CO(too cold in winter though). I haven't any experience with northern CA, but would probably be pretty ammenable to the region. I would LIKE to still have winter months available to wander around in the desert.
So, putting it out there, and if anyone has any leads, would love to hear from you. Please do not be offended if I do not follow up every single lead. I appreciate suggestions, but may have reasons something doesn't seem right for me, and I won't want to have to explain myself.

wow... hope the feeling, turns into something substantial, as to-- long term, enough, for you to stay settled, as you have been, so far...
that, of course, is the main concern of any change... will it last, a bit,
or, will it spiral, into change after change, etc, and wear you out...
or, will it fail and you will be on the streets, :)
as--usually, you can't go back...
i've loved seeing you so very happy, so far, where you have been and what you've been doing...
course, (me too) we have all had the 'gut feeling' 'it's soon time to change' and-- for the most part, thankfully, it DOES work into good stuff...
well, i shared all this, (which you know already) but, just wanted to lead up to this--
sometimes the 'caretaker' route, can be harder than one knows and more unstable, as--
if just 'one thing' changes in that situation, you may out... :(
it could be anything about the:
the personal family...
the person being cared for...
any non-trust issues...
it is just more tricky, due to 'why or what' the care is, that is
given...
or--if housekeeping and grounds, etc...
one little thing wrong, and they may blame you, and out you go...
:(
so, hopefully it will be something that will give you some
option of not being put out on the street... :)
* i know, i know, i worry too much... i just been a mommy for
sooooooooooooooooooooooo long, and trained kids, etc,
and seen a lot happen to folks that got stuck in bad situations...
so, after all that:
keep trusting your heart, be cautious (more so, as we get older
and can't start over as well) ... and find some place you
know you will livem :)

Happi, I don't have any actual leads but around Santa Fe there are lot of sort of care taker opportunities- I know people that have had pretty good set ups. There are more than a few owners of second homes and ranches that like to have some one living on the property.
Climate is fairly moderate, similar to Flagstaff.

Most of the docents at these lighthouses I visit are full-time RVers who receive free camping in exchange for volunteering a couple days a week. I'm sure there are other places where the same deal is extended.

You might want to look into the Druango, Cortez, Mancos, Telluride, Ouray, Ridway areas. All in Colorado. Primarily on the Western Slope

Thanks for the input and support.
Would you believe someone approached me today(unrelated to this post) with a potential situation that....could work out pretty well, save they may need someone sooner than I can ethically make a change(I won't break my commitment, which is through the season).
"Leap, and the net appears." It's a pretty amazing truth, in my experience.
It was also interesting to feel fear rising within as I looked at this nearly instantaneous net unfurling. "Hey!" I hear my head say,"I don't know that I was really all that serious!!!!"
And then the other feelings - sadness, uncertainty, a tad of anticipatory vindictive glee(yes, I admit it was in the mix). And a tentacle or two digging in deep to the ground I have come to know and love. I saw a darned turtle in the lagoon at Split Rock this morning! A turtle! I've only seen three turtles in the vicinity in all the years I have been there. It was slowly turtling it's way underneath the leaves and twigs in an eddy of the part where people would be splashing around a few feet away from within a short time. I can't wait to look for that turtle again tomorrow morning. I will miss, if things change, going to the water each morning and looking for the Brookies, and now a turtle.
As for the campground/park hosts - I think it works great for retired people willing to work the 32/wk in an effort to keep themselves busy. Gone are the days when one wasn't being scrutinized and scheduled, for the most part, in those gigs. I need to make more money than 3
$30/day, which is probably at a place that needs you to drive like Ekat found, to get basic supplies or dump the RV water. I looked at some in JTNP and yeah - they ask for a pretty good commitment with little more than a "spot for the rig" in return(actually, I don't know that those positions gave ANYTHING more than a spot for the rig). JTNP even put their CG host for Indian Cove in the VC parking lot - not even a campsite proper! I suppose so they could have water and electric, and I guess, if you don't mind an asphalt yard it's probably pretty quiet once the VC closes at 5, but I would think most CG hosts like the proximity to visitors in the CG itself.

All good choices, but Telluride gets lots of snow as does Ouray.
New Mexico would be a good choice.
Prescott is nice, but I prefer Flagstaff.
Maybe you could find a ranch that needs a caretaker.

Hello :) I'm looking a petsitting gig in exchange for free or reduced rent in or around the bay area. It can be temporary or on a month to month deal. I'm more experienced with cats & dogs , so if you are leaving town short term and need someone to watch your fur babies let me know & we can meet up.
About me: I'm a female in my early 30s, somewhat new to the area, decided to spend the summer here instead of the east coast. I'm very low key, friendly, mostly keep busy with work (I work from home doing marketing type stuff) I have great honest references from past petsitting gigs in the bay area if needed as well :) I love caring for animals and look forward to making sure their needs are met while their owners are away. Medicine man, Looking for a place to care for, husbandry the land and help protect its essence. Also to park my small Chevy van and a tent when kids are here overnight. It's more like 32 hours a week in exchange for a place to park your RV. Many of them don't even offer full hook-ups.
Trust me, I recently had to turn down the great opportunity of running the VC at a lighthouse because the "site" they provided only had water
Probably why most of those I've met team up as a couple. 2 x 16 hours gets them their 32.
32 hours of anything I'm sure would get old fast.
At least there'll be someone to talk to.

I am currently looking for a rather unique new living situation, in another post. However, because I am not sure if something will come up, I am also looking for a place to camp/sleep in my car. I am thinking if someone who has some property or extra space in their driveway in exchange for a little help or small amount of money, this would be ideal (compared to trying find a place on a street each night). Due to legality of such things, this posting only applies to owners of the property or land.
I am a 36 year old woman who is trying to get a business started and can not do so with the heavy cost of rent. My community in which I serve is in the Santa Cruz/Los Gatos area. I work full time, I teach youth once a week, meditate, and train in martial arts among other things. I have my MTCM (Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine) and I am a Certified Massage Practitioner here in CA, to give an idea of who I am.
I want to give of what I am passionate to others in my work, which is to teach self-care thought the methods of traditional Chinese medicine and energetic medicine (which I have been teaching youth already). Being without a home for a month or two is worth getting my business up and running.

Susan, It has been my privilege to live here a dozen years. Transplants from Monterrey county. The rental prices are very high! One of our daughters moved back home last month. Even rooms are going for $800-$1,200 a month.

I left the area, due in part to the acquiescence of governmental enforcement/oversight that protect legitamate property owners over the dubious claims of "squatters rights", and the threat of loosing poperty to adverse possession, from those false claims of "squatters rights"
but you can find anything you want At Larson's farm The Center For Symbolic Studies,
(River road extension, a left off of Springtown Rd when heading to 'Frozendale' Rosendale/Tillson, Ny)
It is just down the hill and around 12 miles from Happie's squatt. It to is climber alternate lifestyle /traveler friendly, or always was. THe home to a Trapeez school, how cool is that, a circus training ground,
in the woods under the Gunks.

Gnome, I recall hearing about a trapeze school several years ago, but that's about it, and if I know the people you refer to, I don;t know that I know them. There are plenty of people I have met around here, but I am so bad with remembering names and faces. It seriously takes e two years of seeing someone cross the booth path fro me to recognize them. Mind you, most never say anything in the way of conversation so there's not much association to go by. But I do seem to have that lacking of facial recognition thing.
I'm not looking for an east coast version of Slab City. Maybe that's not what the place you refer to is, but I don't do well "around people." I know that sounds bad; it's just that it is overstimulating to me. Even at a party of people I know and like, I can only handle a short period before I begin to feel the desire to escape.

I was there a couple weeks ago. I should have got a picture of the shaggy-looking guy on a girl's ten-speed riding down the sidewalk swerving all over the place trying to balance his bedroll and two potted marijuana plants on the inverted handlebars.

I'm a long gone shadow from there.
The place I call "Owlwood" is half a mile down the driveway of the Larson's farm / The Center For Symbolic Studies.(River road extension, a left off of Springtown Rd when heading to 'Frozendale' Rosendale/Tillson, Ny)
When you turn into the road it passes fields and goes under a bridge,Where the Center's sign is & thats the rail trail.
The road then turns right, the field on the left is the parking for "Owlwood"
(you can also drive into a site)
just past that where the fork in the road is, left leads up past 'the Yellow house, not your cup of tea, but nice neighbors usually.
The road continues to the barn the Center & main house.
off to the right, is the rail trail & where the Trapeze school was.
This is at the far end of the ridge with its own special feel.
Go have a look.
The Larsons, were Joseph Campbell scholars. They were always very cool about letting Humans stay. The facilities are primitive as is your current crib, Ive not seen what or how the place has changed in the last 17 years but It was the last place I visited before I moved away.
Owl Cliff has a spiritual feel.
Steven/Stephen?/,in his generation, the 60s-70s & his son Merlin, for a short time in the 90s climbed at the highest standards, but were not arrogant about it, well maybe Steve was, he can be porcupine like; a bit prickly, I was young & his kids & I hung, I lived down the trail, All our dogs hung too, it made for quite a pack.
Always inclusive - old New Paltz; Stephens family(if that is how he spells it? im not sure?) settled in the valley a coons age ago.
So that is how they come to own a magic valley.
It would be a place to be able to come back to,
if things haven't changed.
New Paltz ex-hippies, and climbing royalty (to some at one time) and Steve was a Prof at the college, also a Psychologist. (so can be manipulative)
At "Owlwood" your place is yours to choose in a small wood, it can be away from everyone. There were 6-7 sites. I had seen it bigger,
as well as just Merlins domain.
I hesitated then removed it, Now I going to say it
Your Love for the Preserve may be out of balance.
there are many people in your vicinity who have been similarly treated(mis-treated?), at least, was there any reason given? to cause this rift, this change.
Of course Change is inevitable, so there is that.
I hope that it is all good.
We live an hour form the 'Clove' - in 'tony' horse country Connecticut. Do to the wealthy estates around Ridgefield there might be the type of hook up you're looking for? It may be possible to find "in-holdings."
These are rustic cottages to whole house.... Are you good around Horses?
Starbuck's Equestrian in Ridgefield Ct may be a place to check out. They might have you do to much work intrade though, They used to run a summer camp for girls....

Single Female with a professional background in Landscape Design & Installation, Staging & Design, Marketing & Admin, and a BFA from SJSU Class of 2011. Photos are of some of my work. I'm a responsible woman that downsized so I can explore my career options in real estate. I've been local for over 25 years and was a successful landscape designer and contractor while I raised my family in Los Gatos. I'm college-educated, fun and "normal." Age, gender, race or religion don't matter to me. Just be a nice, considerate housemate, that's all I ask along with a lock on my bedroom and bathroom doors. I need a place that would welcome my 12 pound dog - he's cleaner and nicer than most people, and is very low key and mellow. He's 13 years old and all he does is sleep in my room, on my bed. "Hef" is a CERTIFIED SERVICE PET and has his certification through the STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND MEETS LEGAL GUIDELINES TO NOT BE PROHIBITED FROM RENTAL OR LEASING. He's very mellow and well-trained. Hef gets along well with all other animals, cats, dogs, rats and birds. He's well-behaved, house-trained and is walked every day. I'm a conscientious person that cares well for herself and her pet. I like animals and can help you out by watching your pets for you.
