Charlotte was found lying unresponsive at the foot of a stairway in her Telluride home last night. It appears that she fell the length of the stairway.
Charlotte was an excellent climber and skier who climbed, I believe, her fifth 8,000 meter peak last year at age 60.
She was well known and beloved by many in the mountain communities of Aspen and Telluride. She will be terribly missed by all who knew her.

What the f...?

That's terrible news!

Had the pleasure of climbing with her at Smith for a day. And spent a little time socially as well. She was a lot of fun to be around. Very full of life.

What was her quote after giving Sandy the shot on Everest? "Oh, does that hurt? Good!"

I'm so sorry to hear this. Ugh.

Condolences to friends and family. She'll be missed. I'll miss her. Damn.

It just sucks. Charlotte was larger than life....a huge presence, with an even bigger heart.I'm in such shock, and feeling so gutted. I just so wish she could be granted a do-over of last night. :-(

What Pam said^.

Such a kind-hearted character and could slog up/down a mountain with the best of them. I love how present she was in conversation and truly was interested in what was happening in your life..from the mundane->adventures and everything in between. We'll miss you Foxy.

Very Sad to read this! I believe she was one of the persons in the 'Into Thin Air' book on Everest. I climbed Snake Dike, on Half Dome with Reese Martin right before he passed away. He had fond words of her....

Charlotte always put back into the climbing community. She served on the board of directors of both the Access Fund and the AAC.

Charlottes old dog Max was all about skiing. He would run up and down the skin track all day. If you weren't careful when taking a break, Max would get a hold of your ski pole and run off with and possiblg lose it. She told me he once chucked one her poles down a 400 foot cliff. Funny stuff. Max was a good dog and Charlotte was a great woman. I haven't seen her in years and I am sad that I never will again.

How awful. Poor Charlotte. I always enjoyed her. A powerful and unique individual with more than a touch of outrageous panache.

I used to surf pretty regularly with Reece, and I climbed with him a few times. I remember how psyched he was when they were getting their "thing" started. Rough luck that they're both gone.

The world was a better place with Reece and Charlotte in it.

Hard news to accept. She appreciated life so much. A great sense of humor and genuine Southern charm. But Charlotte was dealt some bad luck.
She and Reese were such a happy couple.Charlotte dropped a big bundle on their wedding. She hosted many of her climbing friends and folks from the Access Fund. She was happily telling people, It’s my money and it’s the only wedding i intend to have.
We got together a few times with other friends for climbing road trips. One time we were together at the Gunks a day after I’d done a slide show at the Explorers Club in NYC. Friends will not be surprised that some of my remarks often one women who shouted, That’s not true and walked out. Next day Charlotte picks me up to go to climbing in this brand new Lexus Land Cruiser. She waited a long time to say, Don’t you know who’s car this is? Right, her friend who’d couldn’t stand being in the same room with me. Charlotte let me know I’d been wrong and rubbed it in by chofering me around in the Lexus entire trip.
Gratified that I was able to visit with her once again, albeit briefly, at Access Fund 25th anniversary. Appreciate the moments.

Oh, Charlotte! She was a dear friend who encouraged me to move from Alaska to Ridgway. We served together on the board at the AAC, climbed, skied and partied together. Every memory of her is a treat. I will miss her greatly. Here's a little piece I wrote about her a few years ago:

Remembering a strong woman.
Skiing at Garibaldi with Mark Bebie maybe 1990 the both of you very much in love.
Denali with the “Chicks on Pricks” (crampons) expedition in about 1993, sharing tea and laughter at 14,000’ and 17,000’
Everest in 1996 this time Starbucks coffee in Basecamp before it all went pear shaped and Scott didn’t come back but you did just barely.
Meeting up at Smith Rocks, Wild Iris, City of Rocks and Telluride in the years that followed.
Much Respect for a life well lived on your own terms

It is so sad to hear of Charlotte’s death; the climbing community will miss her greatly.

I got to know Charlotte in the 1990s when she and I were on the Board of Directors of the Access Fund. I liked her immediately; she was smart, fun to be around, and contributed to the discussions and the decisions.

Unfortunately, her life had more than its fair share of tragedy. Her boyfriend, Mark Bebie died on an ice climb in the Canadian Rockies. (Mark Bebie left a substantial amount of money to the Access Fund in his will, and this helped get the Access Fund over the hump to financial stability. There is an award in Bebie’s honor given by the Access Fund each year)

Charlotte then married Reese Martin (they met through their mutual involvement in the Access Fund if I recall correctly) and the couple lived in Aspen. But Reese was killed in a paragliding accident, leaving Charlotte bereaved again.

I met Charlotte and her avalanche rescue dog while snowboarding with my sons in Telluride one weekend years ago. I learned from an obituary that her beloved dog was killed in an avalanche.

Charlotte Fox was aptly named: a charming, blond belle with a southern accent that overflowed with warmth. So it was a surprise to learn that she could swear like a Jersey longshoreman if the situation called for it.

I can call up her voice and her laugh even now; I’ll never forget her.
