I picked up a few tips for ascending. The only obvious tool missing from these hardened mountain fellows was a grappling hook. But I wasn't born yesterday. I know there's a surplus store somewhere in Seattle that'll have one, and then I'll have everything I'll need for "the mountain."

No kidding! After seeing that video I realized what a gumby I am. Can you believe I always strapped my ice axe to my pack in a vertical orientation? Probably just blind luck that I didn't die.

And I don't even want to admit what stupid sh#t I've been using for protection. Fortunately, I have a bunch of garden-fence stakes just like that guy drove in. Next time I'm out, I'll be carrying a rack of those.

And letís just avoid the incongruity of all the old timey gear yet the climber has on a (then) brand new pair of approach shoes...

Speaking of which (and throwback gear in general), how has your footwear quest progressed, DMT?

Totally scored a brand new pair of U.S.-made Merrell Wilderness from Merrell themselves for $100 off list. Happy happy, breaking them in slowly before I try them out for real.

other than the one time we took her to a local 40ft quarry to get ready for Mt Washington this was the only climb she ever did. It may have been a bit sticky as I do believe she was married at the time... sadly I have no photos of her. It was her camera.

Jud's dad was on Riva Ridge. Jud's ax is his dads from WW11

Donini I think one of those blokes could be Jody's dad.

Didn't do much climbing in the Colorado Rockies. Army surplus rucksack with a steel frame was all I could afford. But never, never lugged heavy axe to top of a mountain. We chopped up the wood first and carried it up.
