I sold my Sportsmobile, and am looking for my next overland expedition vehicle.
The Earthroamer is on the top of my list.

Would that be a step up or a step down?
Now, EarthRoamer has upped the ante with the new $1.5 million XV-HD model.

There's nothing you could do to a Ford truck that would cause me to pay more than a $100k for it.

I wonder if anyone has managed to drive one of those rigs to SA and back and lived to tell about it.
"Earth" seems a stretch, I think the inhabitants of the most remote places in the world would kill the occupants of that thing, at first sight, then part it out and sell it.
They should just call it the Cali Roamer or North American Whitebreadmobile or somesuch.

Was looking at those used ones today! Lotta samolians for vehicles with 70-100,000 miles.
Could buy a brand new F-350 and put a new Arctic Fox 1150 camper on it for half of a used ER.
Those Earthroamers ain’t jack compared to those German Unimog monsters. People drive them all over Africa without problems. Seen ‘em all over S America.

It didn't look like that tough of a road. A couple rocks that could of been moved with a pry bar. Hell, my old '74 land cruiser wouldn't have blinked.

that is not a difficult trail. I've done much harder, solo, with no spotter, and no concerns. One of the issues is that is such a large and heavy truck.
I have a 2006 Tundra 4 x 4 with a FWC pop-up, E rated tires. The smaller truck, and lighter/low profile camper makes stuff like that easy. I can easily go where larger/heavier trucks have difficulty.

It didn't look like that tough of a road. Exactly. On a dirtbike, that would have been a 6 second video.
I've seen a few Earth Roamers around Moab - they seem just slow and in the way and driven by old people with no off road experience who didn't know any better when they bought the thing.
With that kind of money burning a hole in your pocket, seems to me you could get way more functionality other ways - maybe a class A towing a Jeep - etc.

That Jeep is kind of cool. But not $120K cool.
And the Nomad Yoga family in their ridiculously expensive ER, filled with trash and PBR. Sheesh.

I seriously doubt many Earthroamer buyers are regretting their moment of weakness. Most of them did not come to that state by accident and certainly did not commit themselves to a life of sewing chalk bags by doing so. I’m sure they appreciate all yer pity, especially for their inability to understand that they were not buying a rock crawler. If I do decide to get one I’ll certainly take all this wisdom under advisement, but if I decide to get an equivalent boat I’ll know where to come for further elucidation.

I have an F250 crew cab 4x4 diesel with a cabover camper. Is it really worth 5-10 times as much to not have to walk around to the back? I guess if you've got the bucks, you'll pay for luxury. I just think of all the other things I could do with that money and it doesn't seem like I'd get that much more enjoyment out the difference between the two.

Spot on. If you have to ask for advice about buying a goofy ass RV on the supertaco, well... you might be a good customer for Flip Flops bridge business too?

Perhaps my comment was a bit harsh but it is true that anybody can spend any amount of money. I drive a 2003 4Runner (Limited V8) that I bought new. It has 280,000 miles on it. Runs great. My wife says I should buy a new vehicle - anything I want. If I said I wanted an Earthroamer I'm sure she'd say go ahead. But as long as the 4R runs, I think it's perfect. I look at the fotos of the used Earthroamers for sale, not a scratch on them and whoever has one would likely go spastic at the thought of scratching it. I scratch mine and I really don't care. I was camped out in the back of it a few weeks ago while it rained and spilled the coffee I was making, so what. I was very happy snuggled in a sleeping bag, reading a book and having coffee. It's a bit crowded if two try to camp in the back but if I was after comfort, I'd stay home or in a nice hotel. The Earthroamer and the Sportsmobile, are too big and too top heavy to get into my favorite trailhead.
That said, if it makes you happy, get one and be happy. You sure don't need my approval.

He needs approval or he wouldn't have asked the question in the first place.
That said, earthroamers are for size challenged individuals lacking skill or experience in driving off-road.
Just buy a Grand Cherokee Hellcat and a tent, you will have more fun, score more strange, and get there faster while doing it all.

Dan - I can tell you're really proud of yourself, and, well, Kudos!
But your post made no sense whatsoever. The first half completely contradicts the second.
If you have to be smart to earn and save money, how can any idiot spend as much as they want?
Fascinating.
I said any idiot can spend money. I did not say any idiot can spend as much as they want. Nor did I say anything about smart being a prerequisite to earning or saving money.

Nomad Yoga family in their ridiculously expensive ER, filled with trash and PBR. Good catch - too funny - all that money to solve a non problem - getting a ginormous RV out into the middle of nowhere - and one of the basic problems of RV life that everyone with a modicum of experience knows well - sits unsolved - storage and fridge space - can't even keep his swill cold, so it sits there taking up a passenger foot well.

That foldaway thing is pretty cool, but that sort of thing would make me bonkers. I'm not the sort who wants to deal with "this gets put away so there's room for that." Plus, I was imagining grit and stones getting into the runners on all those slide outs. But certainly a marvel, that they designed and made it by themselves.
As for that Berdoo Trail video, I took my van down roads almost like that this winter, while looking at land parcels. A fat, old, 2wd, low clearance van. And if I'd gone as slow as that guy did, I probably COULD have sewn a chalkbag as I went through. I think he could have found a lot more rugged places to show off that vehicle's performance.
I think the trick is to be realistic with what you want to be doing with a vehicle, and then buy/lease/borrow/build accordingly. Sure, if money's not really an object, you can have a bit of a trophy rig, but a lot of people get an idea of what seems cool in their head and then just go get it, stretching their budget to do so, only to realize they would be happier with a different choice.
This last year, it seems the Sprinter population has exploded. They seem to be EVERYWHERE, and tricked out - not basic construction rigs with a home made buildout. One good thing about this....give it a couple years for the next "must have" rig to come out, and there will be a buyer's market for all those barely used Sprinters. Of course, it will be like driving an older model iphone.....

I know these aren't any sort of typical daily driver, but less than 10K miles on a 2014?
Like I said - Sprinters in 3-4 years, going to be bargains. At least with these EarthRoamers, there won't be a market glut. Sprinters will have numerous choices available within any region that has a good outdoors rec scene.
