Katie Hill is running for Congress in California's 25th Congressional District (Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster, and the northern part of the San Fernando Valley). Just noticed her new campaign ad where she is Sport Climbing. Can anyone identify the route(s) she is on?

She's climbing on the NE Face of the Elephant's Ear (shown in photo above), so it's probably:

A congress person who leads 5.10! That is pretty cool.

Here is a funny video of Katie Hill taking her staff on a climbing outing for team bonding. Or, why you should never take non-climber staff members climbing just because you can.

Her opponent, Steve Knight, covers that demographic. He's taken pro-confederate flag, anti-immigration, anti-environment, anti-LGBT, anti-Obamacare positions so it makes sense for her to point out the contrasts. It is a very purple district, so she could have a shot, particularly if there is a wave, despite him being a local legislator for many years. In the last election, he only won with 54%.

I know, a trivial omission in the great scheme of things. But it's a Hillary kind of slip. Her opponent is something else, indeed. I thought the ex-mine owner from WVA who spent time in prison and is now running in the Repub senate primary sounded bad!

Gotta be at least 5.10. I don't see it on the MP page. Maybe Ben can chime in and enlight us.

Here is a way to support Katie's candidacy and get a nice parting gift...

I have about 4 Joshua Tree Routes and Bouldering still in the shrink wrap along with about a dozen brand new Joshua Tree Climbs. For each SuperTopo member who contributes at least $40 to Katie's campaign (Use Act Blue), I will send you a copy of one of these guides (signed if you like). An $80 or more contribution will get you both.

Just email me randykvogel gee male with a screen shot or email confirming your contribution along with your mailing address and I'll ship the guide(s) to you Priority Mail.

This offer is limited to 16 guides (all I have).

I like this idea A LOT! I am supporting Jessica Morse in Yosemite's CA-4th Congressional District. I possess 1 copy of Mountain 4, the Yosemite Issue that Ken Wilson and I brainstormed about when I first met him in London and for which Chris Jones, Dave Dornan, Glen Denny, and I contributed. I'd like to maximize the campaign benefit for Jessica for this issue. Yes, I would autograph it, and could ask Chris Jones and Glen Denny to do so as well. Any suggestions?

I'll try to post a few pics of the issue tomorrow.

Slightly off topic but Blankenship, the "ex-mine owner" sent 29 men to their graves for which he spent 1 year in jail.

Looks like she's in a tight race for second, but early returns show the Republican has more than 50% of the vote in an election where Republicans had no particular reason to vote. It looks like the blue wave won't carry a surfboard here.

With all precincts reported, Katie is in 2nd place by a little less than 800 votes. In the coming days, ballots mailed in immediately prior to the election and provisional ballots will be counted and it will be seen if her lead holds or perhaps extends.

Typical low turnout in this primary is a very poor prognosticator for the November election.

Katie is 2nd overall (only the two top vote getters face each other in Nov, regardless of party). Steve Knight (the Republican incumbent) got the most votes (as you would expect).

Once the results are final and it is a two person race, support of those who want change will coalesce behind Katie.

Getting voters out in November will be the deciding factor in who eventually wins. The greater the turnout, the more it favors Katie (or any Democrat).

Older, white and conservative voters are more reliable voters (greater participation percentage). This is why the Republican Party always attempts to suppress voting (voter ID laws, etc.) as it favors them.

AND, I'll extend my offer of a Josh Guide (as long as supplies last) if you send me confirmation of a $40 or greater donation to Katie's campaign.

It is a Primary, not a multi candidate Run-Off (as other states have). So No, that is incorrect.

There will ALWAYS be two candidates in the General Election in November (the top two vote getters in the Primary), even if they are from the same party (e.g., 2 Republicans or 2 Democrats).

This was a primary, not a runoff.

Her platform is not to attack trump, but to push what she wants to accomplish for the district. I think this is the tactic dems should use.

done and done. Hearing about her opponent got me motivated. From the New Yorker article mentioned above.

Katie Hill, who is thirty and a Democrat, had declared her run for Knight’s seat a few weeks earlier, on International Women’s Day, part of a wave of young women seeking elective office. (Margaret Talbot wrote about these candidates here in April.) Soon, with support from Emily’s List and endorsements from celebrities like Kristen Bell (“My girl Katie is running for Congress”), Hill was giving speeches at “retirement parties” for Knight and pushing out the hashtag #FlipItBlue. Hill and her staff—“the most millennial campaign ever”—were featured in a two-part documentary on Vice News Tonight on HBO. In the run-up to the primary, held last Tuesday, Hill outraised Knight. Now, having defeated the better-known Democrat, a former corporate lawyer named Bryan Caforio, she will face off against Knight on the November ballot.

Not yet. I believe its the 26th of June. He is running TV ads...other than to just blow cash, I'm not sure why.

Even Ted says, "Mitt's a rock star".

He's a shoe in.

Race to watch for me in Utah is Ben McAdams v Mia Love. He got out in front of the new housing development west of Herriman (Olympia Hills) and vetoed it...we'll see where that ends up. He looks like he's 14...ha ha.

Centrists fear socialist tag will cost Democrats the House in 2020
The most endangered House Democrats in next year's election are wary of their more outspoken, liberal colleagues.

The moderate Democrats who delivered the House majority want you to know they’re not Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib or Ilhan Omar.

They haven’t all blindly signed on to the "Green New Deal." They haven't been widely accused of anti-Semitism. They aren't hungry to impeach President Donald Trump.

They are the ones on the front lines of the battlefield, defending Democrats’ House majority. And many of the endangered Democrats already see their outspoken colleagues as a potential obstacle standing between them and reelection in 2020.

“As we run up to this presidential [election], we need to show that Democrats, as a whole, are not socialists," said Rep. Katie Hill, who last November flipped a Southern California district that Republicans held for the previous quarter-century. "We’re not pushing for impeachment without serious cause and serious evidence."

With the progressive squad of Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, Omar and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) capturing most of the headlines, the vulnerable Democrats are left to respond in stronger and stronger terms. The four liberals have forced majority-makers like Hill to distinguish themselves with voters and donors early and often.

“You have these four members frankly that were elected from seats that are going to be Democratic no matter what and represent a very small fraction of the party as a whole,” said Hill. “And it’s like they’re the only ones that exist.”
