Ron-

I have to figure out how to get there before Tioga is open. But put me down as a strong "maybe." If I can get the airplane through it's scheduled annual inspection--may fly into Mariposa.Would like to stay in Yellow Pines, if this works out.

The Bird's prophetic words in 1973...
As new vistas are opened, changes will inevitably occur. Moral decisions will have to be made about certain technological innovations, such as chalk and resin. I am not arguing either course, but if some development makes one route easier to climb, it will make another route possible, and for that route use of the innovation may be obligatory. That in turn may make a two-sided coin: a nuisance to climbers and a boon for manufacturers. As far as the consumption of products is concerned, decreation will be the responsibility of the whole climbing community.

Ethics are also due for alterations. Top-roping will probably be used not only for physical conditioning and confidence building, where bouldering will not suffice, but also as a prerequisite in the case of dangerous unprotected leads by the climbing avant-garde. We may frown at these ideas, but they are likely to become selectively assimilated as part of the future norm.
Looking forward to seeing many old & new friends. Please include how many are in your group so that we can get a better idea of food, etc. Big thanks to Dale Bard, Layton, Ron Gomez, Yosemite NPS, Bison Designs and a whole slew of others that are making this come together. If you or your company would like to participate as a sponsor please contact Dale or myself through ST.

I am going to try very hard to be there. My girlfriend and I are having our first child next month. Jims Memorial will be maybe three weeks after he is born. If I can swing it, we'll be there. I only met Jim once and I feel like I don't have a place at this table, however Jim Bridwell was a hero to me. A rockstar among climbers if you will. His style is unparralled. When I did meet him we talked about how climbing in the media lacked grit. It made my day to chat with him about that. To all his friends and those who knew and loved him, I say cheers. You all were very fortunate.

Efit to add, I changed a few things I wrote. Aldo, Laytons painting of him is great. I hope it is on displ ay at gge Memorial. Really really good stuff.

Everyone has their own way of memorializing a lost friend. Something I saw yesterday in The Trench.

A quiet little note on the Camp 4 message board

The almost empty message board

Yesterday, in a pouring rainstorm, I wandered through an empty Camp 4 reflecting on all the seasons spent there in the 70's and all the people and friends met there that are no longer with us (and those that are).

Walking clockwise around the loop we used to drive, I tried to picture the site I stayed in near the power station in the fall of 1974. I saw Chuck Pratt juggling empty wine bottles there. He was always a hero to me.

I tried to find the tree that Dale Bard parked his converted bread truck next to with a horizontal branch that he used to do pullups and levers on. Couldn't find it.

The area at the end of the loop, where the rescue site is, was home for several seasons.

The first person I ever saw do a one-arm finger tip pullup was Ed Barry. I was following him into the bathroom at the far end of C4. He looked up at the door jam as he was passing through. He jumped up, latched on to the jam with his right hand, and cranked a couple one arm pull-ups. I was blown away. That inspired me to train to be able to do the same. The bathroom foundation is still there. That was where Werner had his extension cord running to his tent.

I walked through what used to be the workout site on the left, slightly uphill. This was next to a site I stayed in with a bunch of Washingtonian friends in the late 70's, several of whom are long gone. The two trees that the 20' 2x12 pullup board was attached to are still there.

I came to Little Columbia Boulder where I first met Jim Bridwell in 1972. He was bouldering with, I think, Barry Bates and several others. He was in his prime and was indisputably king of the jungle. I wandered to the base of Midnight Lightning where we used to watch Steve Wunsch to do his yoga in 1972. Mead Hargis had his platform tent there when he was the Camp 4 ranger.

You have to marvel at the change. How different Camp 4 was from what it must have been in the 50's and 60's. Most of us can only imagine.

The new generation of climbers is here and eventually they'll be replaced with a newer generation. The cycle will repeat itself again and again.

Goodbye Jim. You were truely one-of-a-kind and an inspiration to all of us.

We have camping for 90 spaces in Yellow Pines. You MUST reserve a sight via this post and it is first come first served with a strict limit number. So remember to let us know if you plan on camping. We only have the Yellow pine site for Saturday night and Sunday night.

Hey, Ron… I've paid through the nose for a tent cabin at Curry for the Saturday night of the 19th. But I'd like to camp on the Friday night of the 18th and stay Sunday night, the 20th. I'd really like a 'sight' (or maybe just a 'site' <g>) for those two nights; I don't need a whole site, I just need to find a place to lay my head.

Can you put me down for camping in Yellow Pines for that Friday and Sunday night? Thanks.

Most likely, you will need to set up after the memorial. If you do not have your name on the list we unfortunately can not accomidate you. Just a thought..

there are cabins in foresta, condos and cabins in yosemite west, and cabins in wawona. All of those are inside the park, so you don't have to leave the park and enter it on a saturday. The line into the park can be long on a saturday morning.

no restaurants though. Except at wawona hotel. You would have to do your own food. And they don't do one night rentals.

Foresta 10 minutes to valley

Yosemite West 15 minutes to valley

http://www.yosemitewest.com/ywcondos.htm

Wawona 30 minutes.

Many thanks....Jim and I were CLOSE buddies. It's the least I (we) could do for him. He would want a simple celebration, gathering of all his friends in friendships. You would know what it takes to put this together as YOU sent your Father off in grand style with many friends having many smiles, hugs and Love spread all around.

So sad. My wife Terry had exactly the same condition, at the same time, and was on the same list. The one major difference between the two cases is she did receive a donor transplant three years ago. .maybe if just one more person had signed the donor card.....

Glad your wife received her transplant. In retrospect, wonder if some of the signs and symptoms I saw years ago would have made a difference!? Kills me sometimes to think something may have been done if I could have seen into the future. I'll never forget the phone call in January he and I had.....was the beginning of the end. Literally less than 2 months and he passed. But I will say....he faced it head on, no denial, blamming, no feeling sorry for himself. I miss Jim.

Ron, thanks for keeping this all together. No easy task.

For all those that will be camping with us; I'll be bringing my griddle and doing a pancake breakfast Sunday morning until I run out of batter or mouths to feed. If you'd like to help I will probably run out of toppings first. Butter, syrup, jam that kind of stuff. I should have enough of everything else. If you've got a griddle and want to flip pancakes that's cool too. I can only cook so many at a time.

Hi Ron, reptyle here. In our previous conversation you made a self criticism statement that bothers me a bit. It concerned your fear that there was something that you missed or something that you failed to see earlier. Sadly this is almost universal in family and friends. Take it from me, there was nothing that you did or didn't do.
The vast majority of "New" hep-c cases with hepatic failure had absolutely no prodromal symptoms. The first visible sign of the disease shows up secondary to the livers failure. It's usually jaundice or abdominal distension due to ascites.
I am a retired paramedic and emergency medicine instructor with physicians level courses. I am as trained as you can be in observational medicine and I never saw a thing in Terry until she complained of abdominal discomfort..
You did the best anyone could have! Jim was lucky to have you as a friend and caretaker. Proud of you. It's a hell of a rough way to go. If I can make it there I'd like to get a chance to talk to you and perhaps Layton I saw him last when he was, like 10 years old. I'll look for you. If you'd like to,find me and we can chat.

Anders thanks for the info, very helpfull.

What Werner said!!! No one knows Yosemite better than he, so good advise Werner, thank you.

You CAN NOT check into camping prior to Saturday. We only have camping Saturday and Sunday nights.

If you have requested camping with a name other than an avetar...you have a place on the reservation list. YouMUST check in to secure your space..

We are still waiting word from the park service as to whether YP will be able to open. Work is being done to clear up and secure YP. It has recently been under water. They have been extrememly helpful in this whole gathering. If you attend and see a park employee in attendance....thank them for their help.

Please DO NOT attempt to reach the park service with questions about the memorial. They are very buzy getting the park ready for their buzy time of the year.

Peace

Get in early as possible.

The entrance gate on 140 can become a long line on busy weekends due to the traffic lights at Ferguson Bridge.

Great news Ron. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

For those camping at Yellow pines, parking will be tight. Please maximize space as much as you can; carpool, park close together, if there is room and you are with someone leaving a car, park right behind them (there are a few places where that works. Overflow is out by Sentinel Beach. We may have to use it.

Also we can not block the road it needs to be clear at all times for servicing. Yellow Pines has a turn around at the end. When we fill the place up its the only way to get in and out.

Lynne I'll bring some firewood and a drum just in case others will bring instruments.

Don't forget the pancake breakfast Sunday morning.

GREAT NEWS!!
The Park Service busted their buns to get Yellow Pines cleared enough to be able to host all of us! A huge thanks to them for ALL their efforts. Camping will go as Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday nights.
Ken Yeager has been instrumental in helping monitor and facilitating this to happen, please look him up and give him a big thanks as well.
Harrison Hood will be in charge of the camp ground...he too should be given big thanks, he has lots of experience from past FaceLifts.

I'm really grateful to have joined the celebration on Saturday; the program was not only a great moment for preserving the history of Yosemite climbing and story-telling, but also a tender acknowledgement of Jim Bridwell's many contributions to the world. Big big thanks to Ken Yager and Ron Gomez (and everyone who spoke). I understand many strings were pulled for the lovely memorial; thank you for doing the legwork and setting the stage for reunions of all sorts.

Below is a short clip of the amphitheater scene during the pre-program mingle; a small taste of the communal and laid-back vibes.

But what I didn't realize was that the actual Memorial didn't start until 2 pm, thus many of us got there at 10:00-11:00 to socialize. This translated into @ 8 hours of time to catch up on the past and present. Awesome, but left many of us in a zombie mode after hours of non stop gab. The report in Alpinist, by Ed Hartouni: http://www.alpinist.com/doc/web18s/newswire-bridwell-memorial-recap

For many of those present, the words of the superintendent, and the blessing and prayer by Lucy Parker, were very fitting to the occasion. Just as Mrs. Parker began her prayer, a large raven flew over and croaked. That might have been symbolic or something, but it happened every ten minutes or so - from long distance caws, the ravens knew that good food was to be had.

If Wayne's dates are correct (I think they are) the first YOSAR site was in 1970 in the campground under Glacier Point Apron near the garbage dump, which is where bears ate. Bev Johnson was chomped on the shoulder while sleeping in her pup tent that Spring.

I don't think that the 1970s climbing boom would have happened if it were not for YOSAR and Jim. Jim was very inclusive and as the head of the YOSAR site, he offered a welcoming place to stay for visiting climbers; it created a physically close community of regulars and visitors that fostered great climbing. I have written about this time here http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=654801&msg=654801#msg654801
and here
http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=1036610&msg=1036610#msg1036610.

I don't think that I would use the term "founder" to describe Jim's role in YOSAR, but I don't have a good alternative. There were rangers who could manage the worst of the climbers and there were climbers who could manage the worst of the rangers. As Werner notes, Pete Thompson was an integral part of managing those relationships. It also helped that all of the rangers were respectful of the huge talent of the climbers on display on big rescues. We were fast, safe, organized and easy to deal with (at least during rescues). Then is was back to snarling at each other.

we changed it, though it is hard to characterize Jim's contribution in a brief clause... maybe it still doesn't quite work.

my fault for not trying to track down the details and just repeating stuff I'd heard, and forgetting about Wayne's post

Yes, Lynne, I'm holding a bunch of pix, not for wanting to post them. I've been busy creating a "defensible space" from potential wildfires at our new house while burning of potential fuels is still permitted. And there is also my tour biz that requires my time... Soon tho... Patience please...

My apologies that these are coming in small groups, but I'm squeezing them in between tours, house-building and gardening. Look for future postings on the "building" and "gardening" threads...

Again, everyone's help with identities would be appreciated by all...

Super great pics, BooDawg and Mastadon! Thanks for your contributions.

Does anyone have a picture of Will Oxx. Met him at the StoneMasters gathering in Josh spring of 2008. He was cool to give me a DVD of his time in Baffin. My grandkids have loved it. I love it because it encourages them to adventure. Bummed I didn't met Will or Erret A. Erret wrote a piece for our forthcoming book Tuolumne Climber.

These photos are wonderful. People I read about in the mags in the 80's captured in today's times. Most of them I've never met, some I have. Definitely good to see all the smiling faces. I think Jim would say you folks have done him proud.

Now, about videos; last time I'll post on this but I'd love to see 'em as I was unable to attend.

Attending Jim’s memorial helped snap me out of a ten year bout of deep depression.
I had only “bouldered” with Jim a few times, but he was a huge influence in my life.
I saw many friends I had not seen since I left the Valley in 2001.
And I met a new friend that lives 40 miles from me today in Colorado.

I’d like to think we could have a get-together for the sake of fellowship of the tribe, without someone having to die.

Profound thanks to you, Ron.
I love you all.

Ron, yes I agree they would love a gathering with joy for them. And yes, Christian, we could have a get together for the sake of fellowship.

Let's keep the idea on the back burner. I'd love to make it happen if we have support.

I fit that general description...
Lol

Just a background player from the rock monkey generation, paying my respects to greatness.

“Bouldering” with Jim is my second fondest memory of my time in the Valley, surpassed only by the time Harding threw up on my shoes.
The walls are timeless, but the friendships are more precious.

Maybe call it a reunion. Include a way to honor the memories of those no longer present, but not make this the central theme. Could be on a recurring basis but not necessarily annually. Could couple the gathering with volunteer work, which gives people a sense of purpose. May might be a nice time. Lovely time in the Valley.
Alternate locations may work, based on location of a volunteer project.

Yeah Laura, if we do a project, may get us access to camping preference. I like the idea of an annual gathering. Bunch of old geezers, we use to have a low key annual gathering of C4 people, but that eventually fizzled out as some were just getting too old to attend, but it was fun as hell.

Bluelens, awesome idea! Let's keep the heat simmering under this and not let the flame go out.

Anyone out there have location or date ideas????? If we can target something I know we can make it happen.

Wonder if we could hook up with the MillCreek gang that honors Alan Bard every 10 years? Several said they had better make it sooner than 10 yers for "obvious" reasons. :)

What John said👍🏽. I was thinking of something in the Valley and going off Laura’s idea of doing work and maybe getting Yeller Pines, but FL could work...just a lot of other crowd there for that. But then again...share the fun. Lynnie, I like the MillCreek idea too, we just need to see what Roger thinks.
