Kat, I talk to him daily, he's never been like this since I've known him. I've tried to keep the "tribe" up to date, but purposely kept it off social media for respect to Jim and his family. He is very appreciative of the phone calls from all his friends and is thankful for the friendships he has. He needs prayers, karma and good vibes right now.eace

Jim's older than me by a few years...definitely retirement age.

Medicare should be filed for, Medical as well.

Don't hesitate...online at "filing for Medicare."

And call Covered California at (800) 300-1506 to file for Mecicaid.

He's worth whatever you can give.

Mike and I will help in any way we can. Thanks for the FundMe link.

At various venues in the past it was our privilege to buy pieces of his old gear. He would then show us in various books pictures of him using that gear BITD. Most of it we passed on to climbers more worthy of it than us.

He’s one of a kind and I always enjoyed seeing him either at the Oakdale events or more frequently in JT.

Our thoughts for his recovery and not having to suffer too much red tape. That a happy camper he would not be. ;)

Talked with Jim last night, he sounded good. One thing he told me was how much he appreciates all the people who have donated, sent or wrote well wishes, the phone calls and all of the concern over his condition. He was more concerned about how I was doing(had surgery earlier this week), he is humbled as always. He still has a long road to recovery and needs all the prayers, karma, good vibes... whatever it is that you can send his way. Keep in mind Peggy and Layton, Jim’s wife and son. They have been dealt a heavy blow. Keep encouraging people to donate, what ever the amount, it all adds up to big amonts and as said...Jim truly apprecites it!

Great story, Kat....I'm sure there are plenty stories out there about everyone and they be good and/or bad, they are what makes us who we are. I believe like you...I will defend my friends as I know them, to the end. I got my friends backs and many times I have their friends backs as well. I will be the first to admit, Jim and I have our differences, but we ACCEPT that about each other. We don't write each other off simply because of opinion differences. We learn from each other, even if we still disagree. I've got plenty of stories of Jim and I screaming at each other, calling the other every obscenity known to man, but in the end, we always leave each other saying, I Love you. Jim is a dear friend, has his opinions, is one of the most generous, kind hearted, selfless people I know. I could write a book on all the times I've witnessed him showing goodness toward other people, he may not even know. I accept and respect his opinions, morals, ethics and friendship. I will remove my negative post, it just got me what was said and the way it was said. I got Jim's back.

When a friend needs help, I don't try to determine whether (a) their politics align with mine; (b) whether they could have avoided the situation they are in; or (c) whether there are others in the world who might be more in need.

I would encourage everyone to continue to help Jim out.

Jim is a truly unique man. His accomplishments are without parallel; his spirit of adventure changed the sport and provided motivation for all of us. What some may not know is his generosity, guidance and sense of community. As a teen in Camp 4 he showed me around the Camp 4 bouldering circuit when both he and I knew I was never going to become a climbing luminary. When I had no place to stay at Squaw - "Hey, Kim and I have a place.." I haven't seen Jim since we bumped into each other in a climbing gym in Sacramento years ago - but the same friendly guy and that was many years after my Yosemite days.

So, while it is great that we can all pitch in according to our ability to do so, I am at a loss to understand how it has come to this. How many dreams has Jim inspired? Dreams that translated into the massive sales of climbing/outdoor clothing and equipment. Could there a "time machine" sponsorship? Paying it backward for what he contributed? Would it be so difficult for a reasonable annuity to be established that would take away the financial pressure? If "consideration" must flow, I would think Bridwell or "The Bird" articles reminiscent of his trademark paisley clothing or some piece of equipment would sell with some decent marketing that explains something of the man and what he has meant to climbing in Yosemite and beyond. Maybe beginning with the middle-80s Rolling Stone article for a bit of history and color. Or Jim's writings. The names of the companies that could easily solve or at least ease the problem so Jim and his family can focus on the serious health issues are obvious to all.

The fact that we cannot or will not really help of our icons in need is both disturbing and dumbfounding to me. Where is the American Alpine Club in any of this? Other sports organizations do something for their athletes in need.

I would love to see a retroactive sponsorship, however the reality is that the new generation is not at all familiar with the history, much less the names. Old farts are just not a big demographic in the marketing game. Go to any gym and see how many people recognize "The Bird". Bad ass aid in uncharted territory is lost in the translation to social media.

I mentioned this very concept in another thread, of companies that have profited off Jim pony up and make some comprimising contribution. He and I have talked about lost income in the past numerous times, but Jim being Jim shrugged it off. He mentioned a few companies who have had his ideas, inventions and advise see a favorable profit. Perhaps a clothing company( not Patagonia)....a rope manufactor.....and a company that makes climbing hardware take a look at their gains from Jim's work and dig in their pockets. What's a full page ad in the leading mags, what's one day at the OR cost, what's a percentage of one product they cashed in on from him? Small numbers in the big picture, but sizable in contributions to his plight.

I think it's because the great majority of climbers coming along today were introduced to climbing in gyms on plastic and never began their climbing on real rocks. However, the very best gym climbers do know about real work climbing accomplishments, especially when they go on road trips and explore areas. Think numbers and demographics fuel the ignorance.

One of my first Valley rock climbs back when I was 20. I remember bleeding from my knuckle and trying to clot it with chalk. The smell of blood, chalk and granite, that wild and easy move high up stepping out and right above some big exposure, hiking down the gully in the dark and seeing head lamps on El Cap strewn across it like stars in the sky, thinking to myse if that I would one day be one of those lights and then years later remembering that thought from high on the Zodiac... Fond memories to say the least.

I came late into this fabulous campfire. It's an awesome one, no doubt. Sure there have been the negative speakers, but far, far outweighing them are the people that help, support and give love along with caring.

We are, each one of us, one of a kind, very special creations. Some of us are able to step beyond the restraints of "regular life" and show us what can be achieved on this planet.

Jim Bridwell is one of these people. He has shared his wisdom and experience with the rest of the world, climber or not. I give Jim great kudos. For those that tear at the fabric of climbing greatness, do what he did and then come back and let us know you have no imperfections.

Visited Jim in Loma Linda yesterday;....he was getting his hair shampooed, and having his blood filtered through the dialysis machine. He says he is going home soon....but at home he will still need dialysis 3 times a week and a medical caregiver to keep an eye on him. I think he still needs a new liver, but he is keeping his good looks, good sense of humor, and fighting spirit. He seems determined to beat this challenge but it's not an easy road. From his 3 weeks in the hospital, he is thin and weak in body, but feisty and spirited as always. It was good to see him. He appreciates any contact, communication and visits from his pals.

i met him in '75? and his respect and gratitude for his mentors came through loud and clear.
we climbed together in yosemite, canon tajo and mexico city.
don and jim can be proud of having set him on course.

this from his supertopo PM back when it worked:

... great to hear from you after all this years,i am still

Thanks Todd Gordon for the update on Bridwell.

After checking back in on this thread,
I wanted to apologize for what I wrote earlier (and maybe shouldn’t have written in the first place.)
I definitely don’t agree with or support anything Fleeting wrote.
Words like his are hutrful, to Jim and to those who are close to him.
It was a total dick move on his part.
And even on my part, to address his post and sound like I agree with him or advocate his sentiments, was lame.
All I should have said was
All the best to Jim! Hoping for a swift and awesome recovery.

My apologies to Bullwinkle and anyone else who I may have pissed off.

Had to get that off my back.

i could have better presented the sour truth.
something like,

"maybe after all of these kind people share their
resources with jim, he will reconsider his
political bent, which denies strung-out people help that they desperately need."

because, punters, the absolute truth
is that by supporting the republican
party, jim has consciously decided
to turn his back on immigrants, refugees,
poverty-stricken americans, etc. the list is long.

i'm no saying that we shouldn't help those in need.
i am pointing out the thick irony and double standard
represented in jim's case. that's all.
when others need help, jim tells them to f*#k off.
and ahm no talking about letting dirtbags sleep on his
couch or in his yard. no ahm talking about
extending compassion to strangers that have hell handed
to them on a large scale.

i send loads of money, last year, to social programs
and advocacy groups that are starving in resource-shortage
due to jim's vote.

i respect immensely those of you whom give, laterally.

i am irate with those as#@&%es among us whom horde their
excesses (no matter how minute that excess might be) and refuse
to help others.

As I said earlier, Jim and I go way back and he was there for me big time when my son died. I will continue to help. Yes, Jim’s politics are deplorable. Perhaps he now sees that the government he detests is there for him with medicare and the conservatives he supports would like nothing better than to do away with it. Where would people like Jim be without a government saftey net...however meager by European standards.

Once I was hanging out in Desperate Hot Springs with Brent. We were doing routes on the south face of Kaufman Crag at the top of the tram. FWIW several of them are quite good. Especially "It's Always Something." Jim was up there some too. At time I was climbing well, but maybe for the wrong reasons. My life was a mess. Recent divorce, lousy job, one room apt in L.A. So I don't know if Jim picked up on this, I was pretty private, but he said I should come down and hang at his place. I wasn't there long, but meeting Layton and Peggy and just relaxing was great.

Sometime later we went up to Do Black President. Back then there was no convenience anchor at the top, and the one bolt protecting the crux was an old 1/4 incher. We climbed it in two short pitches. Jim lead first and set up a belay at the horizontal crack. I shedded some gear and climbed up above the bolt, which was the only pro between us. I must have looked a little shaky, I looked down between my feet to see Jim plugging every extra piece he had into that crack.

I just scrolled through the list on the GoFundMe page. I saw at least three $1,000 contributions and one for $1,500. There are a lot in the 100 to 200 range, and then many, many smaller donations. I saw a couple modest donations from people I know, and I can say that in their circumstances they are generous.

by all means work on getting him on medicaid; there's a cure for HEP C....it used be 85K, but the price has significantly dropped ...I know it sounds expensive but medicaid would pay in full because the life time expense of managing HEP C is much greater then the 85K, so from insurance point of few it saves everyone money to treat.

^ somehow the state knows I don't have medical insurance and automatically put me on medicaid. I found this out when I went to my doctor - another hospital got control of my medicaid insurance, that I never even applied for, and I can only go there until I can get them to cancel it. ie, JB may already have it.

Plan B (and Plan A for me) might be to go to a foreign country where medical care costs a lot less. I bet poor countries are good at treating hepatitis. I got dengue in Colombia and got some of the best medical care I've had anywhere, 2-3 visits, blood tests, prescription meds all for about $20 dollars. I had no insurance, that was full price. They do heart transplants in Medellin, and are just as smart as American doctors, and only about 5% as arrogant. I would mainly look for a place where I knew people who could put me up, and would be comfortable staying a few months.

Edit to add: Layton, if you read this, tell Jim hello from Pierce Adams. I was one of the guys that bought him a beer at the Buen Tiempo in Ouray on Saturday night of the 2013 Ice Fest. He was very gracious. Some of the people he was with were trying to push my friend and I out (understandably, we were hammered and they were eating dinner) but he brushed them off an was very engaging. We talked about how the music in climbing videos sucks these days and it's turning into a damn yuppie sport. Got to meet my hero.

My latest update was that Jim was resting. He has been taken off a respirator and is breathing on his own. He has been "sleeping" and sedated for 2-3 days now. Peggy Bridwell spent the night at Desert Regional Hospital in Palm Springs with Jim last night and said he was "fighting it" all night. Last time I saw Jim was a couple of weeks ago at Loma Linda. I have been trying to see him once or twice a week for the last month or so. Our visits have been super fun, meaningful, and awesome....well, as fun as can be for someone who didn't really know what was really wrong with himself and he was in a lot of pain! He remained very optimistic that he would beat this, up until a couple weeks ago. After that, it's been frustrating. He remained up-beat, interesting, interested, and as jovial as one can be with serious health issues. His main concern seemed to be with Peggy, Layton, and Grandma (Peggy's Grandma who is 103 years old!). He never seemed worried or afraid of his grave situation.....but frustrated and a bit helpless with complications, delays, lack of diagnosis, and more stuff going "wrong." I think Jim would find it comical that Wikipedia has him deceased when in reality, he is not. I will miss Jim;....many many will miss him and the climbing community will have lost a giant in the climbing world. I am very happy to have spent the time I did with Jim. I told Peggy that, if he wakes up and starts talking.....call me up and I will be right over. He is very very seriously ill........to quote Warren Zevon......"My rides here.." Much love to the Bridwell family. I know it's a tough time and everyone is very concerned and wondering about Jim's status. I am sure Peggy and Layton will continue to inform us of Jim's condition.

I for one would rather dwell on the good times, the time spent in Camp 4, especially, with Jim. And with his associate, now deceased, Kim Schmitz.

As a n00b I looked up to both of these characters as they progressed into true greatness. They were a pair which I hoped and dreamed that my friend Jeff Mathis and I one day possibly could come to emulate with our own exploits and first ascents. Jim was inspiring, welcoming, helpful, always upbeat, and, in the words of Eric Beck, "a silver-tongued devil" when it came to dealing with the NPS.

His then GF Lois Rice was just as nice as Jim, but much better-looking. She would share cooking secrets with Jeff, just as Jim would keep telling me how to climb some hardman routes. One time, when I was lamenting my lack of progress with the wide stuff, he simply said, "Left side of Reed's."

Well, Jeff and my partnership ended when he thought we would both make better progress if we climbed with other folks, so I never got around to LSR, but always put that out there as an option which no one cared to try.

Jim's association with Kim sort of went the same way, eventually, both taking different routes through life. It's the way of the world and that's that.

Likewise, in our lives, dying is the last thing we get to do. I still feel very connected to Jim, because I have heard from Jeff that he has the big C, which was finally and recently diagnosed. As he has told me time and again, "I'm surprised we didn't kill ourselves back then."

I hope all of us don't have to die alone, but sure as I'm still here, we're all gonna die. Just make it another day, that's about all we can do when we reach a certain act in the drama.

Jim, old friend and mentor, I hope you, with the grace of God, go nobly and in the bosom of your family. If by some miracle you survive and regain mobility, that would be peachy-keen.

Whatever happens, go with the speed of the gods. And when you do finally jam on out of this place, say hello to Schmitz and Pettigrew for me.

Go with the speed of the gods, amigo.

Heart of Stone... Long live the Bird... Met him in the mid 90s out in Jtree... i was having car issues and checking my oil (with the engine running... duh) and here he comes strolling up. He told me to turn the car off and then check the oil... I felt like such an idiot. haha... Then met him again at a North Face slide show (Costa Mesa). I believe it was after he did some climbing in Alaska. It was soo good. He said something that really stuck out to me... "Back in the day... Our best protection was courage." He signed my climbing magazine to my unborn son Warren Zeno Esparza.

Time for another Bridwell story.....

I am in the Lodge parking lot and I see Jim hulking this huge sewing machine across the road towards Camp 4. I saunter over and ask him what up. He tells me that now that he's an alpinist he's been getting sponsored by a bunch of different climbing-related companies with all sorts of products. The problem is that they are all prototypes; the companies wanting Jim to test out their new designs in the harshest environments.

Jim tells me he is fed up with zippers breaking and fabric ripping high on the climb with success in sight. So, he's going to start making his own equipment so it won't fail on him.

This is a story I've always wanted to tell.

The first and only time I met Jim was in Talkeetna in May of 1999. He was there with Fly'n Brian McCray, Brian Jonas, Glenn Dunmire, and Terry Christianson, and they were enroute to climb what became "The Useless Emotion", a massive big wall and mixed ice route on the east face of the Bear's Tooth.

I was 29 years old and just getting into hard alpine climbing, and I was also in the midst of my brief affair with Yosemite big wall aid climbing. Jim's legacy was not lost on me at all.

So it was by happenstance that one evening, Paul Roderick, Lisa (Paul's sister and my then girlfriend, and now wife) and I ended up partying with Jim and his crew at the newly opened Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where they had booked at room. They were all pretty lit up by the time we decided to head a few miles down the road to a house party we had been invited to.

So next thing I know, it ends up that I'm driving down the road in our Toyota pickup truck with Lisa in the extra cab back seat, and Jim-f*#king-Bridwell sitting in the front seat next to me. I was, as I noted, youthful and ambitious, so I was bit star struck. I'm trying to play it cool, but at some point I think to myself, I need to ask him a question or two. When will this situation ever happen again? Jim Bridwell is sitting in the front seat of my car.

"So Jim", I say, feeling a bit sycophantic. "Who's the best alpinist you've climbed with?"

I feel a bit lame with this question, but I'm relieved when Jim receives this question with an expression of coolness and reflectively. "Hmm. That's a good question", he muses.

Jim starts verbally reciting to himself some of his partners of the past. "Well, Lafaille was really good. Strong". "Mugs was sure solid". He files through a few more names, then seems to reach a definitive stopping point.

Jim stares straight down the highway in front of us, and with a deadpan expression that conveys not a hint of irony or sarcasm, announces his conclusion.

"I'd have to say it's me. There ain't no one who can aid climb like I can".

__

A little later, we're leaving the party. Lisa and I are driving the truck, while Jim and Fly'n Brian are going to pile in with a local female friend of ours and her boyfriend. This couple had a rather tumultuous relationship and were obviously having some issues that evening. Lisa and I are right behind their vehicle as Jim and Brian get into the back seat of their car. The vehicle advances and we start to follow. After only 15 feet, their vehicle's brakes suddenly lock up. Jim and Brian jump right out of the car and briskly walk back to our vehicle and open the doors to get in.

"We had a little problem", Brian announces tersely as they take their seats, foreshadowing a coming story.

On the drive home Jim silently smirks as Brian tells the story.

As they had entered the car, our friend's boyfriend, who was inebriated (and driving), was giving our friend a ration of $hit amidst their ongoing bickering, which we'd all witnessed at the party. As the car began to advance, Jim authoritatively announced to the boyfriend:

"Maybe you should quit being such an a$$hole to your lady!"

He locks up the brakes, and yells "GET THE FUK OUT OF THIS CAR!!!"

__

When we get back to Talkeetna Air Taxi, Jim opens the passenger door of the truck and steps out, slips on the ice and goes down hard, smashing his head on the step rail of our truck, and disappears from my view.

"Oh my god", I think. "We've killed the Bird!"

I run around the other side of the truck and Jim is already staggering to his feet with Brian's and Lisa's help. He quickly waves us all off, wordlessly expressing that we are to pretend that it never happened and never speak of it again.

Jim had a serious back issue on this trip and the next morning, as his crew was loading the airplane, he was gingerly hobbling back and forth and trying to stretch it out, and, being quite hung over, vomited in the sink at TAT. As they departed, I wondered how the hell he was going to get up the Bear's Tooth.

A couple weeks later, they returned, having succeeded in putting up one bad ass route. Jim and Brian (who had almost no ice climbing experience), had done almost all the leading. Hardmen to say the least.

I went to his slideshow about this climb at the North Face store in Seattle the following winter. A couple of classic and enduring one liners came from this show, but that is a story for another post.

I'm sorry to hear about Jim's health struggles and I wish the best to him and his family.

Tamara, thanks for posting that! Been wondering since we talked about that picture, what it looked like! I think The Bird is flying on high lifting thermals...wings spread, gaining altitude, just cruising enjoying the ride, looking down on the gorgeous scenery! Big smile on his face. Keep at it my Loving Brother!

his friends were unable to raise enough money for the medical treatment he needed.

For real? He was denied life-saving treatment because he couldn't afford it?

It appears he was in the hospital a few weeks, looking for another hospital to do a liver transplant, then was sent home and immediately went downhill. Maybe was too late to treat his hepatitis but I would die before I could afford it too. There are apparently two treatments for Hepatitis C, both owned by Gilead Sciences: Harvoni costs $95,500 for 12 weeks, and Sovaldi, which costs $84,000. (this info comes up when you google hepatitis c treatment) That's $1,000 per pill and makes the Epipen "pharma bro" look like a humanitarian.

He lived a full life and passed as he and his family saw fit. No issues that they couldn't deal with. Be positive, The Bird would want it that way. He was positive and motivated the whole time.

Jebus the reality is that hardly anyone could afford to stay in a hospital for long, if you have to pay the daily rate out of pocket. I'm sure the Harvoni treatment was out of the question. He was trying to find a hospital to do a liver transplant - I can't imagine the price tag on one of those.

I'd hate to see this thread of compassion turn into a healthcare debate. We did what we could for Jim and his family. I'm sure they could still use more donations as well.
Cheers, y'all.
