I have family in Huntsville, Alabama and this 'race' was a huge issue (not among us, rather with the culture of Alabama) as the family is originally from Seattle (Boeing space program). My brother didn't want to even talk about it a month ago, thinking that might skew the results. When I saw Jones had won I called down south; huge relief that Moore lost. Thanks to all the voters who turned out, as it seems turnout was the key. Maybe the tide has turned. Sure hope so.

From Reuters: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-alabama/democrat-jones-wins-u-s-senate-seat-in-alabama-in-blow-to-trump-idUSKBN1E616L

In Gadsden, Alabama, Louis Loveman, 73, a retired librarian and self-described lifelong Republican, said he voted for Jones. “It’s simple,” he said. “I don’t trust Roy Moore.”

“There are too many allegations floating out there for there not to be fire behind all that smoke. I never voted for a Democrat before, but I did today,” Loveman said

You just have to enjoy that Moore (& Bannon & Trump) drove a 73 year old Republican to vote for a Democrat.

Per the demographics, white people in Alabama revealed themselves to be just as stupid as all the stereotypes about them...

Ninety-eight percent of black women voted for Jones, while 63 percent of white women voted for Moore. About 31 percent of white voters overall chose Jones.

Thank God for Black people who brought it.

I was surprised.

And pleased. I find it ironic that in Alabama, a white man was elected by the overwhelming vote of black people.

The state is coming of age.

There will be many people there who have never had a dem senator in memory. Jones now has the chance to open some eyes, as DMT says by being conciliatory, as opposed to declaring war on Repubs. Trump will undoubtedly help him out.

Short memories.

They elected strait party dems from 1831 to the 90’s except for Jeremiah Denton for 2 terms and during during reconstruction. That only changed because a guy switched parties.

Alabama wanted a culture war, if not for a "teenie" issue they would have had their culture war. Why should Jones be conciliatory, he has no chance of being reelected. All we need to do is continue to block the orange sh;t gibbon.

What you don't seem to realize is that back then, the democratic party was the party of segregation and bigots, which changed about at the end of that time. They were conservative before, and tend to be very conservative still.

The entire south switched parties.....

We can't block him, we are out of power. the only way to come out on top, is to win elections, and the more elections dems win, the better.

Perhaps Jones has no chance, but I don't think that is true. There was no democratic "machine" in the state, but there will be one now. You may think it wise to give up on AL for all time, but I think it is an opportunity. Especially if you review the demographics of voting by age. The demographics are changing, and getting out the vote will be essential.

i’d have to politely disagree on that one. basically a known pedophile who for over a month prior to the election had multiple sexual assault allegations against him lost by an effectively razor thin 1.5%.

while the dems should take any victory they can get, they shouldn’t read anything into this other than that the republican leadership basically worked as hard as they could, in their handling of this situation, to hand this election over to the dems... and the dems were still just barely able to trip over the finish line.

if the dems read this as anything other than a one time incompetence grounded gift that they/jones are going to have to work their asses off to keep, it’ll be generally and specifically for naught...

Yep, you don't get to run against a pedophile very often, but there is some Trump backlash factor here as well as he spent considerable political capital to support Moore.

DMT, my analysis exactly.

Jones might be unelectable in Los Angles, but he was the perfect moderate to run in AL.

Although, he might be the model of who should be run against the entrenched Repubs in Ca, to take advantage of the times.

So this brings up a significant strategy issue:

Bannon is the mastermind behind putting up GOP extremists to run against incumbent GOP officeholders. That is partially what happened here. And it worked, in terms of getting the extremist past the primary to knock off the incumbent, Luther Strange, who I think would have easily beat Jones.

If this continues, and the whacky continues to oust the incumbent,or at least fatally weaken them, we may see the shift in Congress that would really lead to the blockage of Trump and the GOP. I don't think this tax plan is going to help them in the general elections.

nahoo, I agree this Democratic victory should NOT be wildly celebrated

however, Alabama IS THE reddest state in US, in fact the last time a Democrat was elected US Senator from Alabama was 25 years ago

the Republicans did all they could to elect Moore including the RNC committing to spending supportive advertising in the state in addition to very popular in Alabama President Trump stumping and robo calling for Moore

yes, Jones won by only 20,000 votes but he won and won in the most Republican state in the USA

please allow us a small amount of ball spiking in the end zone, no one seriously is trying to infer any kind of a massive Dem wave out of this thing

The Dems did it with HRC, The repubs just did it with Moore...

I do not look for Jones to go all in with the left side of the Dems.

AS DMT and others have pointed out.... Americans are, the majority of both Dems and Repubs, looking to embrace people who are around the center of the spectrum.

well Mr Guyman, here is the list, so far, of the women who have publicly said that the man you voted for acted quite sexually inappropriately with them

*are you now, Guyman, now ready to state that Donald Trump is the "scum"?

Who has accused Donald Trump of sexual misconduct?

Ivana Trump, the President’s first wife, used “rape” to describe a 1989 sexual encounter she had with him during their divorce proceedings in 1990. Before the book, Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, which featured the account was published, she said her use of the word should not be “interpreted in a literal or criminal sense”.
Rachel Crooks told the New York Times, when she encountered Trump at the Trump Tower elevator, he kissed her forcibly on the lips.
Jessica Leeds alleges Trump, groped, grabbed her breasts and tried to put his hand up her skirt in the 1980s, while they were in a first-class cabin of a plane.
Kristen Anderson alleges Trump put his hand up her skirt and touched her vagina through her underwear in the early 1990s at China Club, a Manhattan nightclub when she was in her early 20s.

In 2007, Summer Zervos claims Trump groped and kissed her on two occasions. One incident took place at Trump Tower and the other at a Los Angeles hotel.
Porn star Jessica Drake accused Trump of forcibly kissing her and two female friends on the lips at a Texas charity golf tournament in 2005. She also claims Trump offered her £8,000 and use of his private jet to have sex with him.
Karen Virginia, a yoga instructor and life coach, claims Trump grabbed her arm and touched her breast while she was waiting for a car after the US Open in New York, 1998.
When she was 19-years-old, Bridget Sullivan, former Miss New Hampshire alleges Trump walked into the dressing room, unannounced while contestants were naked in 2000.
In 2005, Natasha Stoynoff, claims Trump forcibly kissed her in a closed-door room in Mar-a-Lago when she was at his home to interview him and his wife.
Jill Harth, the first woman to publicly accuse Trump of sexual misconduct, claimed he forcibly kissed her on the lips, groped her breasts and grabbed her genitals in what she referred to in a 1997 lawsuit as “attempted rape” in one of the children’s bedrooms in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in 1993.

A woman using the name Jane Doe claimed that Trump raped her when she was just 13, in 1994. The anonymous accuser filed a federal lawsuit against the presidential candidate, who she claims raped her at a party in the New York apartment of paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.
In a Facebook comment, Cassandra Searles claimed Trump repeatedly grabbed her buttocks and invited her to his hotel room during a Miss USA 2013 pageant.
Temple Taggart claims Trump forcibly kissed her in the 1997 Miss Teen USA pageant and on a second occasion at the Trump Tower, the New York Times reported.
Mindy McGillivray accused Trump of groping her at Mar-a-Lago in 2003 whilst helping a photographer friend with a photo shoot, Palm Beach Post reported.
CNN news presenter Erin Burnett reported in July that one of her friends told her that Donald Trump kissed her without her consent in 2010. He allegedly invited her into his office alone, told her she was special and gave her his mobile number.
Cathy Heller accused Trump of forcibly kissing her on the lips in public at a 1997 Mother’s Day brunch at Mar-a-Lago.
