Officials said that one of his fellow campers, noticing his friend was missing, tried to rappel down the cliff in an attempt to rescue his friend. However, upon his descent, authorities said the man’s hair became entangled in his climbing gear. Dangling by his hair, officials said the man was scalped, and then fell to the bottom of the cliff.
Yikes...

"Hammmock camping?" "Rapelling" (meaning climbing gear on scene)
Wanna bet these guys were trying to sort out the use of portaledges in anticipation of doing a wall?
It would appear that alcohol was involved, which supports my hypothesis.

It didn't sound like that from the description I heard from one of the search and rescue team. Just another drunk camper, stepped of a cliff while going to take a leak, he said. The conversation started as he told us how few of their high angle rescues are of actual climbers, and that the previous rescue and recovery was a typical example of the dangers from a combination of free camping, cliffs and alcohol.
