Hey Chris or other forum designer/moderator.

It would be really cool to have a "Like" button or feature for photos and comments on this forum. People often post rad photos or great thoughts, and it would be cool to interact with eachother by giving a thumbs up (or down). Its such a common feature in so many other forums/social media outlets.

Often, say in the "Show me What you're Building" or "Very Large Trout Lover's Thread" or "Post up a Rock on Tuesday" threads, people post cool stuff but never receive any feedback because we are tired of writing comment after comment and it starts to sound banal or not worth the effort.

I for one would be way inclined to hit "like" on all cool photos or comments and I think it would be cool to rack up a whole bunch of "likes" on a comment or photo I submit. This would also be helpful in some of the arguments online....giving credit where credit is due for good thought content or a well stated argument.

I have been interacting less and less here lately after years of contributing TR's and threads but thought this might spice things up and make it a more fun place to visit.

Get with the times Supertopo! Rec.climbing never got a "like" button and look what happened to it! You ain't relevant these days if folks can't interact properly. Bring on the dopamine releasing "LIKE" button!

Thoughts?

I have always been told to get something done you have to find how it affects the bottom line. The Taco is funded by ads. I assume that means it already has a counter to let the advertisers know how many people visit the site. If we were willing to let advirtisers post ads smack dab in the middle of popular threads that were indicated by likes I could see it happening. If we had like buttons I could not find really cool threads just by looking at how many people responded. I guess I could count like hits. LOL

1. It would be really, really cool NOT to see a "Like" button.

2. It would be really, really cool to have a "take a hike" button.

Yanqui, you get a plus two for the video.

What's that, a total of minus four all-around for you now, but who's counting, eh?

There have been discussions ad nauseum about "forum enhancements" for years now. I doubt CMac will ever even read this thread. His focus is on TechGearLab. From looking at the past, I'm sure developer time and money will NOT be wasted on Supertopo.

So pretty much a bunch of "No's" from people who rarely post photos, trip reports, climbing content or anything of any substantial stoke. Makes sense.

What a boring crowd. Supertopo is headed towards becoming a Myspace for the elderly it seems.

Everyone gets a trophy! Self esteem overload. JOHN BECK
Thats retarded. Build your self worth off of how many stupid 'likes' you get. D2R2

And don't worry about my self esteem. I'm a really big deal on Insta. I derive my self esteem from my hot wife, my beautiful kids who excel at everything, my big house, and my rad truck with 35's. Nothing the aging, angy crowd at Supertopo can ever give me by liking a few photos of me pumping out on moderate trade routes.

Just thought it would be fun to like other people's content in a way that could encourage more stoke around here.

See you Tuolumne this weekend!

I like you people.

Whatever it is that you like about yourselves - your hot wife or your cool kids or your awesome climbing prowess or your super social skills or your lordly supertopo social standing or whatever - that's cool. Most folks I think manage that on their own time.

But if a like button helps, great! I like that, too.

micronut, have you had any communication with either CMac or RJ about changes to the forum? My guess is not.

I think it's been clear for years that they are NOT willing to spend time or money on the existing framework. For example, the PM function has been broken for a year and a half, which are they are aware of and can't be bothered to fix.

In case you haven't noticed, the Taco does not operate as a democracy. Here in America, we get what we pay for :-)

Note: There is a star rating system for photos.

A "like" or similar system of acknowledgement would let someone posting know who got the message. This would also save space on the servers since it would use less data than a post.

I agree that the appeal of this forum is it's simplicity. Other social media has ever expanding details that help finance the traffic. I see no profit in it for the ST site managers to give us more stuff.

Disabling the email function for us has been a powerful message: "You freeloaders are waisting our time here."

I would enjoy a "like" button. However, if you like people here then Facebook friend them. Much of the content that is of value is the same.

Most of the quality contributers here are also on Instragram where you can love them, not just like them.

Good point Dingus. Sometimes as a business owner I make decisions that cost me money simply to give our patients/patrons/"customers" a better experience. Fresh cut flowers after surgery, Free Jamba Juice gift cards to kid patients, fresh brewed gourmet coffee out in the waiting room.....sometimes its just about hoping people have a good experience.

In this case yall are right....CMac may never even see this.

Dingus if I were to make an argument for monetary benefit I would urge him/them to look at usership on ST vs. usership of competing sites. I wonder if its up, down, or steady over the past few years. I wonder how Mountain Project is doing in the same realm. Increase in usership/new accounts and posters = potential increase in revenue from ads (including charging more for advertisers if you have an increase in members/possible ad viewers).

As an owner I would want to be on the leading edge as a "Social Media Provider" which is what this Forum is. Its funny how many posters poo-pooed the idea of being like FB or Insta in having a "like" button. Those two platforms are ravenously successful and have tapped in to how people like to interact with eachother in the virtual space. And their ad revenue reflects that.

I would characterize Supertopo as a fun, helpful, albeit "dated" platform with a shelf life of questionable sustainability unless it continues to grow with the technological times. I enjoy it, use it, provide content to it in the form of lots of TR's and photo posts and engaging interaction, but see it as a site that might dwindle over the years unless it stays relevant. That has been proven year after year in the tech/social media platform market. I like this site and enjoy it despite the fact that it seems to bring out the worst in many people/personalities. It also has the potential to spread the stoke, create friendships and provide entertainment.

I often wonder what CMac and the crew see as the vision for moving forward. The front page is stagnant. The look hasn't changed for years. The advertising continues to increase and its forum has lost many caring and engaging and contributing posters over the years, icons in our sport who once enjoyed the place but have since moved on to other platforms.Maybe they are killing it here and usership is on the rise? Maybe its in a death spiral. Maybe its same-ol-same-ol. Who knows. Kind of thought provoking.

That's why I appreciate eKat's TFPU thought. Too many times on ST and other forums that TRs are viewed but not acknowledged, dropping them off the front page. I always post on TRs that are good, even if it is only to say TFPU.

Chris Mac is an entrepreneur who has, like many entrepreneurs, muddled through and found a path that makes them successful. For him it seems to have been Outdoor Gear Lab. It is tremendously hard to build a successful business and I commend him on that because it seems to be doing well.

I could be wrong but I sense he has lost the passion for ST, even though in my opinion it still has potential for selling new and updated guidebooks, online advertising, etc. My advice, since I doubt ST has enough current revenue/earnings to be worth much, would be for him to give ST to someone with the energy and passion to do what needs to be done, and take future royalties/earnout as payment. Just my two cents...

It only takes a moment or two to post an appreciative comment when someone goes to the trouble of posting a TR and you feel the stoke. It would be a shame if a "like" button lessened those personal paybacks. If it is just intended for forum posts I suppose I might use it once in awhile.
