The insect thread got me thinking. There are a lot of talented photographers on this forum as the multitude of insect photos on the other thread so clearly show. Is anybody pointing their lenses at amphibians?

Here's mine. Cheers ya'll!

amphibian "a cold-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that comprises the frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders. They are distinguished by having an aquatic gill-breathing larval stage followed (typically) by a terrestrial lung-breathing adult stage."

Nice. Cool salamanders or newts, not sure. I once saw a frog a good 700 feet up the Zodiac, just pasted on the wall, chillin at the belay. Made me wonder if it was born up there. Any thoughts?

Edit: ^^^^^^Reilly, is that newt comment a Lonesome Dove reference?

Lenses?!!

We don't need....

But nice to see response #2 from the (former) Ahwahnee.

I've previously posted a tree frog on my climbing shoe, so this will have to do for now.

Here's a stubborn toad who flatly refused to move out of the trail on a night ride. Even after my cell phone photo (taken at a whopping 5 or 6 inches) it just sat there as I walked my bike around it.

Growing up in the sticks of Virginia I would hear stories of Hellbenders. I think my shop teacher was the first to mention them. Apparently they are salamanders as long as an arm. Never saw one, personally.

If you pick up a salamander and carry it to the next stream over, can it, and will it, find it's way back?

The places I've lived and climbed haven't been overrun with frogs, or other amphibians, but I did meet a couple on a particularly wet day (one of many in a particularly wet year) a while back.

For all I know, he might be a toad. Or he might be a she. As I said, amphibians haven't played much of a role in my life story. But this guy was willing to sit still while I got my camera close.

Full story of that wet day is here: http://www.supertopo.com/tr/Its-all-Lockers-fault-a-TR-sort-of/t421n.html

On our way into the Enchantments in the early 80s, Bryan Burdo pointed out to me a frog with an adaptation for mating in fast-flowing alpine streams.

Floppy.
Continuously rescued from the chlorinated death-pool known as our "hot tub".
He lived under the pool cover for two winters and in the water feature all the other seasons.
I found him at the bottom of the pool one winter evening...
It was odd how sad that discovery made me.

Gecko's in the house are considered good luck. UNLESS your wife or girlfriend freak out when they see 'em. My crew and I in Guam named a pair Pebbles and Bam Bam and they were always chowing down on insects.

It's illegal to kill the native wildlife of a National Park.

Edit: Unless they were the non-native bullfrog:

The nonnative bullfrog is a voracious predator that has been implicated in the decline of many native animals. Bullfrogs eat anything they can get their mouth around including: native frogs, toads, salamanders, small mammals, snakes, turtles, even birds and bats. Bullfrogs probably played a part in the loss of populations of western pond turtles and California red-legged frogs in the park. The California red-legged frog no longer occurs in the park. Because bullfrogs have a huge impact on the native wildlife, we have been eradicating them from Yosemite Valley.

hey there, say, MH2... wow, good job!

also, scooter...

really neat!! i love seeing salamanders...

ooops, but, is he one, or not?
i know there are other similar critters... :)

we once had a frog, hop into our house, as, we had a broken bathtub and house wall, at the backside of house... water just drained outside, from bath...

well, there was a FROG living in the run-off :O

we did not realize it...

one night, we came home from being somewhere with my mom... she was visiting us in south texas, and VOILA! THERE HOPPED a frog...

behind the sofa (which was mid-room, and the bathroom door past the hall, behind the sofa...

we could not at first see WHAT had 'hopped' until we went over to look...

wow... pretty color greenish, and his feet kind of stuck to the floor a bit, but he hopped again... :)

we put him back out into his puddle-hold...
did not really get to see him again... but i will never forget...
it was a fun adventure... :)

Here's a great frog photo swiped from a post by Chris Mac. Really small file, it would be great if he posted a bigger original. It's a wonderful photo.

I'll rummage around a see if I can find images I have of Yosemite toads (rare or unknown outside the park?) and, kind of a special organism to have photos of, the Monteverde golden toad which has since gone extinct. Really unfortunate, it was an incredibly beautiful toad in the Costa Rican cloud forest.
