So the "F'n trucker hat" thread got me thinking. Short shorts were once a mainstay of the American climbing scene. It seems with brands like Chubbys and others that short shorts are making a come back. I bought a pair in Europe last year and I love them. I'm usually the guy at the family barbecue who's shorts are a little too short for comfort but I like em and wear em with pride. What do you think? Are they coming back? Are they here to stay? Do any of you have the bravery or the fashion forward style to sport them at the crag or the gym?
Thoughts? Throwback photos? Discuss.....

Put those on and wander around a truck stop.
You might get a free hat with a little work on your part.

I do like the new fashion the girls are wearing, you know the butt cheeks hanging out below the shorts thing.

I had a problem with short & loose-fitting climbing shorts.
Back in the early 1980’s, I was driving home to Moscow, Idaho with my buddy Kevin after a weekend climbing trip to some poison ivy infested crags along the Salmon River above Riggins. It was a hot early-summer evening and the car-windows were down. I was wearing loose-fitting climbing shorts that were also cut fairly short, for freedom of movement in climbing.
As we started up Whitebird Grade on Hwy 95, I heard a faint ping as my driver’s-side door-mirror deflected an insect through the open window and up my gapping shorts. The injured insect crawled up my inner thigh, as I became slightly concerned and started pawing at the same area.
Yep, about then, the insect, which was an errant honey bee, stung me right on a very, very, sensitive area
.
We skidded to a tire-smoking stop on the outside-edge of the cliff-side highway, and I was half-way out the door when Kevin, with real panic in his voice, screamed that the car was starting to roll backwards towards the void below.
With a heavy sigh, I sat back down, turned off the engine, put the car in gear, & set the emergency brake.
Then I jumped out of the car, and dropped my shorts in front of oncoming traffic.
It was much too late to do any good for my sting, but I did get to dance on the dying bee’s carcass.

The trouble with bringing back short-shorts is that they were never practical for outdoor activities. Anytime you sat down in 'em, everything that moved crawled up your a*#, and even inanimate debris easily found its way into your underwear. When it comes to climbing, now that 99% of us are using leg loops, it isn't very comfortable for those loops to be riding below our short bottoms.
What happens in the world of fashion is, of course another matter entirely, and the need to continually come up with new looks almost guarantees a short-shorts renaissance at some point. Eastern climbers who aren't pining for chigger bite tatoo underwear outlines probably won't be switching though.

So far, I give the win to Ron Gomez. I mean come on, look at the socks, paired with those shorts makes it look like he just stepped out of Jr. High PE class.

Why, thank you! Great times at Corona del Mar bouldering with the crew, late 70's. Leichtfuss, Badyrka, Largo, Graham, Muir, Tapes, Marshall, Vogel and Maria Cranor of course!

Talk about garment malfunction! I spent an inordinate amount of time corralling my scrotum whilst wearing my signature Mark Richards Quiksilver shorts.
Then came the Andy Irons gangster shants which drove me equally crazy.

Micronut,
I'm fully behind your thread topics of late and feel compelled to respond. As a child of the 70's
I have fond memories of the short shorts faze. But, not short shorts on men!! I attended San Diego State in the 70's and vividly remember the "jaw-dropping" impact of watching SDSU coeds prancing around in Dolphin shorts. It just doesn't get any better than that!! I have nothing further to say on the topic.

Hah. Being retired from teaching long enough for the statute of limitations to run out…
Really…What's the point of wearing 'shorts' if the inseam is > 9"?
