The Importance of Being ‘Ernest’

I watched Marty last night. It has been years since I last saw it. Ernest Borgnine deserved his Oscar as well the film deserved its Oscars.

I always thought he was underrated in some people’s eyes, but not mine.

Baddies in From Here to Eternity, Bad Day at Black Rock, The Vikings, Vera Cruz, Emperor of the North Pole, The Wild Bunch; goodies in McHale’s Navy, Escape From New York, The Dirty Dozen; and cameos in films such as RED.

I would say he was a “consummate” actor.

About a year or two before Borgnine's death I caught him on a one on one TV interview and he was incredible, especially given that he was in his nineties: he never faltered in remembering names and his recounting of long ago events were very detailed and obviously still clearly vivid in his mind.
