Happy to announce that Kris Solem, author and all-around-cool-guy is putting on his slideshow presentation "Wild Times In High Places", in addition to the eagerly waited 'Needles Climbing, A Complete Guide' at Kern River Brewing Co in Kernville, May 20th @ 5:30PM. A Facebook event page has been created and seating is limited (40 max). So, please RSVP to the event page. Please, no mass grouping (ie Joe Smith +20). If you have questions, please forward them to climb_on_dude@yahoo.com. In addition to the slideshow, KRBC has recently created a Russian Imperial Stout aptly named 'Igor Unchained', after the classic Needles route itself and to honor the FA'ist, Herb Laeger; a Kern River Valley local. This brew will be featured at the slideshow. Visit the event page for current and upcoming details, as there may be more surprises in store!

Hi Matt, I think a lot of folks don't do FB because they don't want to. Privacy concerns, time sink or some other reason. I hit up Dave about taking reservations from here via email, and registering them himself plus a list here. We'll see if he bites, or has a better idea.

I said this on the other thread. I think this one will probably be the last of these shows for me. Don't get me wrong - they're piles of fun and I'm learning a lot about presenting. This thing has snowballed, with all of these requests coming in and me saying yes to all.

I want to change my focus now, to do programs using my climbing and other things I've done to help motivate people with epilepsy to find more in life, to promote awareness of epilepsy, and to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation.

The B'Field crew should come up to Kernville. Of course camping up there on Sat. night might be wise. We don't want lose anyone driving down that Kern Canyon road with a belly-full of Igor Unchained Stout :-)

Matt, glad your coming. Then again, you're local. LOL. Oh, and about the Igor in Bakersfield. SSSSSHHHHH....... ;)

If you have questions, please forward them to climb_on_dude@yahoo.com

As my Dad used to say, "If all else fails.......follow the directions." ;)

I will compile a list here and update as the email and FB RSVP's come in. Once we reach the 40 mark, that's it. Kris, I'm going to chat with Jillian tonight about some extra possibilities as we discussed. I'll chat with you later. List of people to be made soon. Got those folks covered who already posted they want to come.

As an update to the event, there will be a raffle! Proceeds will be going to Access Fund. Got some good prizes, so be sure to hit the ATM before arriving. You must be present in order to claim prizes won. Also, make sure you get settled in over at the brewery before the show starts at 5:30PM so you have enough time to grab a beer, buy your raffle tickets and head upstairs for the show. I have also updated the list.....over half full on this limited capacity show. Make sure you send me an email or sign up for the event on FB to reserve your seat!

A little update on the event.......getting in some good raffle prizes from near and far. Some big ticket items too.......a 9.2mm 80 meter rope from Black Diamond, BD cams, a rafting trip with Sierra South, just to name a few. Raffle ticket prices are as follows: (1) ticket = $4, (3) tickets = $10, 10 tickets = $20. Again, you gotta RSVP for the event and you have to be present to claim an prizes won. Also, get there early to purchase tickets (CASH ONLY) and grab a beer from the brewery before heading upstairs to the slideshow at 5:30PM. After the slide show, Eric Giddens (owner and master brewer) will be providing a tour, followed by the raffle. Above, is the current RSVP list. Email me if you plan on making it at climb_on_dude@yahoo.com

I'll recon the options before you all come up. Marco went up to Ghost and Spirit last weekend, which means that Sherman Pass is open to the second cattle crossing gate. Not sure if the Cherry gate is locked or not. As far as access goes to Dome Rock and The Needles, hearing that there is still a bunch of snow preventing access between Trail Of 100 Giants and 3 miles north of Ponderosa on 107.

Only NINE spots remain! Get your RSVP''s in!! Going out tomorrow to scout out the approach to Voodoo Dome at The Needles, lopers in hand (expecting new growth vegatation on the approach trail). I'll check out other options (Cherry Hill Rd to the Domelands and hopefully access to Dome Rock). Will keep all updated on road access to the The Needles, of course. In the meantime, here are some of the items slated to be won at the raffle.....a rafting trip, BD cam, Kuhl Spyfire Down Jacket, (2) signed 'The Needles: A Complete Guide' guidebook signed by Kris, framed shot of The Needles, bottles of Kern River Brewing 'Igor Unchained', limited edition 'Igor Unchained' KRBC t-shirts, Yeti Ramblers, lots of hats and other t-shirts! And....drum roll please....a Black Diamond 9.2 mm 80 meter rope!

UPDATE

Good news for those that are thinking about hitting up local climbing areas during the weekend of the slide show. First, Lloyd Meadows Road is OPEN! This is the road that heads north from Johnsondale, out to the climbers trail for the base of Voodoo Dome (part of The Needles), approximately 13.5 miles from turning onto that road. Maggie and I spent 4 hours doing "spring cleaning" (lopers in hand) on the trail..... boy, did it need it! Lots of overgrown sections. Easy to read now....all the way to 'White Punks On Dope'!

Next, the Great Western Highway is OPEN too! Went to Dome Rock first......access road is dry and snow free! Went to the Needles Lookout Rd next. Sadly, there is a 5 ft diameter tree blocking access about 1/4 mile down the road. No idea when the forest service will cut it back. Possible other trees laying over the road too.

Maybe Jeff, Levy, Josie, Jenny,Joe etc.. you never know....

but don't worry, with many of these things, I end up climbing something then end up rapping off in the DARK and wondering why everything was scheduled for such a early start. I have missed Funerals, Weddings and the like cause of the climbing.

see you there.

Looks like the forecast for the Kern Valley area is going to be a bit warm Saturday (mid 80's)......too warm for Kern Slab and New Direction. I know a few people who are attending that are headed to Dome Rock and The Needles to climb. The climbers lower approach to Voodoo is now cut back and marked well with cairns. So, WPOD is a good objective. Best start early to avoid a warm approach.

Take mosquito repellent to Dome Rock. They might not be around, but there's some springs/wetland down the hill under the rock. I've been eaten alive there at this time of year. Don't let this comment keep you away, Dome Rock is perfect right now.

Kris's slide show was a SUCCESS! A full house! Thanks Kris, for sharing your pics, memories and kick ass stories. Who hauls out a trumpet deep into the backcountry and plays Brahms?? Kris Solem, that's who! Good to see a few of the new generation "old Dads".... Guy Keesee, Dwight Kroll, Bruce "Slick" Watts, Scott Loomis, Craig Harris, just to name a few! Guyzo stole the show with him donning a women's small t-shirt that he won at the raffle!! Btw, the raffle produced nearly $500, which has been sent off to Access Fund in support of keeping Bears Ears a beautiful resource for the generations after us. Here's a few shots at the brewery....

Introducing Kris

Kris starting with the mouth watering pics

"Plane rides that buzz close to the Needles give me a woody!"

A captivated crowd

Damn glad to be here!

Minutes before the raffle

The crowd eagerly awaits their chance to win a few ropes, cams and other juicy items up for raffle

"Up for raffle.......one women's small t-shirt. Drum roll please!

A fun time was had by all. Kris and I talked for a short while after the raffle.
He said he would be happy to lead an expedition to the Rincon next Winter.

My friend Mark chatted up the pilot who helped Kris get the aerial shots of the Needles. We have a flight in the works maybe sort of possibly.

As for Igor in a bottle, my head was pounding all day Sunday after a pint of a new double IPA and that Igor.
