Yes, sadly, Jerry Gallwas just called to inform that Royal is gone. Another friend and hero.

What impressed me most about RR was his ability to understand the next level of the game. Most likely it was just part of his competitive nature, but he always seem to know how to take it to the next level. RIP.

Since this seems to be true, could a new thread be started - a tribute thread perhaps - with his full name and without a bunch of question marks? That seems respectful and appropriate since such a thread is bound to get many posts.

Wow, I have a lot of respect for Royal Robbins. Not just in his pioneering in rock climbing, but also in his scholarly demeanor. Guess nobody escapes fate and even legends pass on. Rest In Peace!
To OP SteveW, if it's okay with you, could you please change the subject line to spell his name in full and maybe make the title more telling? I understand that it started when you just wanted to confirm and had doubts, but if it is indeed real, I feel it's more respectful to have the subject changed when the thread will quickly evolve into a collection of tributes. Also, the change will prevent multiple threads from sprouting up just because people did not see this one at a quick glance. But, it's your thread; your call...
Edit: It took me a while to articulate my suggestion, but I see from Brad (mtnyoung)'s post that I'm not the only one feeling that way.

What a massive inspiration he was, to many thousands of us in the 50's,60's and 70's.
A true Master Of Stone.

Relatively few of here actually knew him. But how many of us learned aid climbing (and a fair bit about free climging, too) from Basic Rockcraft and Advanced Rockcraft? To say nothing of being inspired by RR's climbing?
What a life he led.

Wow what a huge loss. Seemed like that guy never got old. I idolized others more but he seemed to loom large over everything climbing related when I was getting into climbing.

The rock climbing god left the planet ......
Robbins was a god in a time when it was possible to have them. With his passing, the curtain on the era he represented draws closer to its final closing. In addition to mourning the departure of the man, those of us who were privileged to attend the show are mourning the dimming lights of a certain time and spirit. The sun sets today on an era that will not see many more sunrises.
May the mountain zephyrs transport Royal's spirit to a dwelling place of rest and peace.

hey there say, steve w... oh my... thank you for sharing, and taking care, as to not put too much info, in the title, until you were sure...
very kind of you...
oh my... very very sad to hear this...
all these older climbers have been such great mentors:
by JUST BEING THEMSELVES... and--living the life...
thank you to royal robbins, for all you have in your life,
and for sharing it without others, then and now, and
leading the way for many...
my condolences and prayers for his family and loved ones...
just in case anyone needs this link, too:
