Being a hillbilly from Tennessee I didn't expect it. They want me to guide a jaguar researcher into Moskitia jungle. Just seems strange that Honduras calls a Tennessee redneck to hold their hand. I guess he is "skeert".

On the other hand, maybe he just figures a Tennessee redneck would be a good distraction when this guy comes looking for lunch...

Might want to read the recent Douglas Preston book, Lost City of the Monkey God, and also read up on leishmaniasis before agreeing.

Stevep, thanks for the Advice. Very aware of the critters that can hurt us. I guess they asked me to guide because I know a lot more about the white city and other arch sites than the nat geo folks.
March always tends to be dry and not many sand flies.

Scary stuff makes for a better story. Preston spent a week or two and dramatically wrote stuff. I have spent months in there for the last few years. Friendliest jungle I have been in!

Q-ball! Have a significant time! (Having read your previous adventures, I was carefull not to say "Have fun" or "Have a good time.")
Ghost! Love the Kliban take on the Jaguar photo! I'm stealing that! Thank you!

I'm sure Preston did overdramatize stuff, that's what makes his books fun reading.
But it does sound like he and a majority of that expedition did get leish...so maybe not too much dramatizing there.
Sounds like you know your stuff. Going during the less-sandfly season seems a good idea. Have fun!

I just read the Preston book.
How do you think that jungle compares to others? This seems pretty badass.

Q-Ball,
It sounds like archaeology is your deal. Do you have a take on the earliest humans in N. America?

Arch stuff is not my deal at all. I happen to stumble across some very interesting stuff. Areas with thousands of stone sculptures etc... I do find it fascinating. I study Lampyridae and Malacology. The hidden ruins are a bonus!
I call Moskitia a friendly jungle because there are few critters to worry about. The terrain and remoteness is brutal but the flora and fauna isn't too intimidating.

I'm laughing so hard I'm crying.
The 1st thing I thought when I saw the title was;
it was a political thread pointing out that Honduras' & our governments were now equal in stature in the international community .
Then it turns out to be a cat thread, but not just any cat thread,
and Very different than most internet medical warnings,
and oh no, not a cat thread at all. . . ?
Wait I know that !Lampyridae
That's glow-bugs, fire-flys, florecent Catterpillars! Cool, wait ?hmm, what Ology?, ?
Glow in the dark mollusks?
Qball, What do you look for in the deep jungles ?
Trippy Catterpillars ? Or glow in the dark Mussels
I've not even pointed to the beauty of the symmetry, and then juxtaposition
The way that all the particulars line up; who responded, names, times . . .
and Lollie!?,?, who blatantly threw in her vote for where to be in June !
not that anybody was asking,
Sweden!
For the Mega Rock show.

Dingus, thanks for the book tip. A very good read is 'The Sex Lives of Cannibals', Maarten Troost. You'll laugh your ass off. By the way, abe.com is a great place to buy used books.

Barba amarilla (aka fer de lance) are bad news. The trip went smoothly and was able to show locals new mountains and rivers. Beware of Delorme inreach. Mine malfunctioned and kept sendingSOS when none was needed. Unaware to us the USA Air Force, Honduran special forces were on standby for several days thinking narcos kidnapped us. I ended up taking the device apart to stop false messages.

Taking my Pech friend to a remote valley and showing him artifacts from his ancestors was the highlight. He sat on a log all day in pouring rain just smiling and asking how I found it.

I'm already studying maps for another round. Crique Uhurukawakana has a nice ring to it. My Pech friend has some wild stories from the last year. Still not sure if I believe the stories but I believe him. Worth a look I suppose!

I am heading back to the jungle! Almost have logistics worked out for 15 days of rafting and hiking the entire drainage from headwaters to the coast. Excited to show my friend the top Macaw biologist in HN where the wild birds still fly!
My work will be less exciting... Terrestrial land snails and lampyridae...and not getting us lost. Haha
