Wow....looks like we will be adding several new acolytes to the fold! Welcome and always remember that "work" is the bad four letter word.

OK, so Moose and Donini want to brag about how long they've been retired.

Hah! Slackers! I got both of 'em beat.

I haven't worked for money since August 2004 when I sold my ranch, put all the possessions into a purchased Zircon placed on my family land outside Mancos Colorado, and began to travel the world with wife Kathy - "before it was too late" for her (9 years older than me).

I thought I was just taking a sabbatical from work, but after Kathy died of lung cancer in 2007, I realized I didn't need to go back to work so, I've been retired now for 12.75 years plus! 4,600 days plus.

P.S. The Zircon still sits, contents undisturbed since 2004. I haven't needed the stuff ever since. Now my daughter gets to deal with the Zircon after I die - in about 30 years.

Seventeen years of retirement and counting. Thankful for a good state defined benefit plan. It'll go belly up eventually and I feel sorry for those in the future who will lose. Everything changes.

25 years as a high school Spanish teacher. Enough has happened in the last 5 years to remind me that life is short, and can change in an instant. I'm 57, and in pretty good health (knees aren't always happy). So while it's probably not a great idea financially, I've pulled the plug. 4 more days of final exams, and then RETIREMENT from teaching!!!! I'll still need to work part-time, or from time-to-time, but I'm not worried about that just yet. Despite the frustrations of day-to-day teaching, it's been a good run, and I'm looking forward to more time, and whatever the next chapter of life unfolds. Bring it on!!!

Right on, Pam. I was at my gig for about 27 years + some student teaching. My last official day was May 12. I'm almost totally retired. Been burdened with a big move to Bishop, and we've yet to finally cut the cord to the house we're selling that helps make the early retirement possible (I'm 55), but the bulk of the transition is done. I'm climbing tomorrow in Pine Creek for a mellow half-day, and that will by my official "I'm retired" first climb. I won't count a couple of little routes in the 'Bamas last week because we still hadn't pulled off the big moving adventure. I'll post a pic to make sure it happens.

@Locker: Feel that summit fever burn, amigo. Feel it burn.

Bad....you're nearly 19 years younger than me....a good time to retire while your juices are still flowing. So many retire with not much left of their physicality having expended themselves following the American dream of more, more and more.money.
Money, a certain amount anyway, is important but money can't buy happiness and good health and the mindless pursuit of more and more money can surely destroy any hope of happiness and good health.
I'm heading out tomorrow with my wife for a day of canyoneering in the San Rafael Swell followed by some pack rafting on the San Rafael River the next day. Next week, a little sport climbing in Ouray and then some multi-pitch in the Black Canyon. I didn't leave my physical being as a sacrifice at the altar of the American workaholic.

Hey, Jim:

I definitely owe you a couple of brewskies for all the inspiration you've given me and this sad cabal of TACOids. Yeah, I've still got solid health and plenty of energy to get a few things done, and living in the shadow of the Bakersfield smog monster was not doing it for me. It was a great career, but my heart has always been in the mountains, and now, for the first time in my life I get to look up and see the crest, climb its crags, and just bask in mountain glory, unfettered by the demands of that career. We won't be rich--heh--but we don't need new Beemers every year, that's for sure. By any reasonable standard, we will live very well. By my standards, we'll live like KINGS. What I'm really looking forward to is heading up to the high country in the fall when I'm usually shackled to the classroom. I've had two semesters off in the fall in nearly 30 years, and I had some great adventures, but knowing all those clear, crisp days, free of mosquitoes and crowds were passing me by always rankled. Now they will be mine!

Jealous of locker...

I figure the youngest is finishing freshman year of HS, and using all my fingers, I count a minimum of 7 years left which I hope can pay his way through an undergraduate degree as long as he doesn't do a Bluto.

Be careful what you wish for. When Crack Annie dumps him cause the Gravy Train ain't rollin' no more we'll see how much he likes retirement.

Photo evidence of the crime. BAd Wife and I and MisterE hit the Pine Creek for a quick morning outing. We are now officially permanent residents of Bishop and digging the short commute to the crags. I am "retired" with lots and lots to do. Love us some Pine Creek. Photo credits to Mr.E.

Locker only 2 days left!!!

Soon I will start to smell something really bad. You will have fallen over and died and Dog will have started eating you.

Or

You're going to have to come over for a weekly round of horseshoes to keep you from withering away. Retirement is the number one killer...

I also heard a rumor about your retirement party behind Circle K in JT?
