I appreciate and enjoy reading Werner's posts. I feel he says much without using many words;.....a true man of wisdom. His climbing career is impressive and greatly respected in my eyes. I don't know Werner personally, though we shot hoops once about 25 years ago behind the Chevron station in The Meadows;...I know Tucker knows him well, has worked on rescues and such with Werner, and has great respect for him too. It's nice to be appreciated and respected by your peers, which Werner is.

Werner,

One of my heros from the way back machine!

I'll always be grateful for when you hooked me up with the beta for the 3rd ascent of Tribal Rite.

-A memory.
I'm twenty years young and I am bleeding my way up Mark Chapmans lead of "Five and Dime" at Reeds. As I near the top my cupped hands begin to slid up and down the wider section of the crack, the feet begin to paddle, and power begins to fail.

I look upward and see two things, more of this dreaded size, and Werner Braun! He stands above me unroped on the grainy, sloping, treacherous cliffs edge completely at ease with himself and his world around him. His long blonde hair blows wildly in the summer wind, hands are placed comfortably on his hips, his eye's fixed on me and my obvious slippery situation.
I push down the queasy feeling in my belly, dig yet a little deeper and hear through my grunting panting self Werner's strong confident voice say:

"don't think about the pain, don't think about the pain"

As I slough off the cliff and onto the rope I glance at the eight holes marking the spot where my knuckles had once been reflecting.

1. Darn, I just failed to second Five and Dime.
2. I won't be climbing for a few days due to self inflicted injury. (tapeless days)
3. I'm really scared dangling on the end of this old rope, on this steep cliff side, with Werner smiling over the side in the summer breeze as though rope is not a necessity!

To this day I often hear Werner's encouraging voice in my mind saying:
"don't think about the pain, don't think about the pain"
This voice has not only pulled me through many challenging moments while rock climbing but also through the many hurdles of my life time.

Thanks Werner, you are the best!

As the guy who started the controversy last night I would like to let the ST community know I give my regards to Werner. I still stand by my earlier words though. Yes they were harsh, but as Werner admits he can be harsh too. We all can be unreasonable at times. My intent was to incite spirited dialogue, and that happened to some extent. I regret that it brought out anger in people. I have learned a valuable lesson.

I hope this can be a turning point for a change to positive vibes for the future of this site. I don't think it can get much worse. If things get negative here again, I will hopefully not be a part of it.

Thanks Werner for being exactly who you are.

Just a bump. I don't really know my a##hole from a ringlock, but I used to enjoy climbing some. Also, I appreciate many of the stories shared here.

It is not always that way, but I've been lucky to experience the friendliness of strangers, both locals and foreigners, who shared a common interest in tying into a rope and getting up high.

Anyway, just a bump for the more positive...

Whenever Braun discusses an SAR operation, well, that's when ST becomes the best website in the world. Always wish I could hear more of his tales.

Second that. Unfortunately I had to meet Herr Braun when he and his merry band were putting me in a stretcher! But I'd really like to hear some more tales of SAR - the good, the bad and the ugly - from the smoking duck point of view.

But knowing Werner, he is probably studiously ignoring this thread and waiting for it to go away again.
