I'm fairly new to this forum but wanted to let all the supertopo folks know that I think that I've come up with a pretty cool solution for the retirement of your esteemed carabiners. Beats just throwing them out for sure. I'm just a guy with a garage, small mill, and a bit of free time with what I think might be a great idea to upcycle your aluminum. I've posted some pics here and on a couple of other forums and am psyched to make racks for people, in a bunch of cool designs. (more coming soon too) Pretty cool way to get your old awesome biners out of that old bin and get them on display near your door in a functional way. Feel free to pass this info on to anyone that might like one. My etsy page is davesclimbdesigns.etsy.com or you can message me directly. Happy climbing.

All those biners still look good to me!
The only biners I've fully retired are the ones where the gate won't close or won't open,
or where there is a groove worn about 30% through.
Although a lot of my heavier biners don't get out of the garage much and
just hold gear. And sometimes Xmas stockings.

Yes, the biners in the racks are certainly in various stages of wear. The blue anodized ones on the triple were new and looked pretty awesome, although it kind of killed me to throw them down on the mill - but hey the customer is king! The idea is really about upcycling old stuff back into use. Here are a couple of pics of some old Chouinards on the triple - look pretty great too. Had to do a bit of clean up before I could mount them (long story).

Yeah, I was gonna say most of those look better than what's on my rack, but at least they would see some use as a coat rack. :-/

So if yer not welding 'em are they tapped? Nice work! I really like the 'graining'.

Cool!

For many in this crowd the base plate should be shaped like this:

Don't have a plasma cutter - just old school tools and a lot of patience! Can you guys think of any other iconic skylines that might look sweet?

For sure: Fitzroy range, Cerro Torre. You might get Donini interested. I bet he's got some old, well used biners, though like me and some others who've already posted, they're still on the rack and getting used. Plus, everybody has to bail sometime.

I found an old biner with Toni Egger's remains in 1975 which I deposited on the summit mushroom of his namesake peak "Torre Egger" the next year.....i wonder if anyone has found it?
As to my rack....100% one ounce Oz biners. Old gear is for looking at, not for using.

Cool stuff. The Valley skyline would be nice with a bit more pronounced features of El Cap and HD.

I got a custom idea in mind. hmmm

The older gear is much easier to machine and put on a rack anyway - all of the new lightweight biner barstock is so thin it is borderline impossible to drill and tap to put on a plate. Would have to weld and I'll bet that would just make a mess.

Jim - if you've got some relics it would be an honor to immortalize them with the skyline of your choice - just send them my way and I'll hook you up.

Some folks suggested playing around with other materials and I've been messing around more in the garage- here's a hammered copper plate set behind the Cerro Torre silhouette - actually helps the design pop out more when put on busy walls. - Dave

Thanks for your psyche eKat! Kind of can't wait to get out of 'real work' here and get into the shop today to cut out the El Cap highlights cause I think it would really pop with the copper in the back.

Alright - I think that the added cutouts certainly give the valley some relief and the respect it deserves! Thanks Mike for the idea! Be sure to check my little shop out if you'd like one.

I know, I know, I know, Colorado can't compare with California (debate ensues....) but the Maroon Bells sure do make a rad looking rack!

It's THE season in the valley! Just an FYI that I'll be at the International Climbers' Festival here in Lander this July (12-16) with a DavesClimbDesigns table and some of my racks if you'd like to check them out.

Just a quick update on the whole carabiner rack thing - I've come up with a bunch of designs as a result of working with lots of folks to do their dream views - and I think they've come out pretty OKish! Way into fishing on my rest days too and am making a brown trout silhouette as well. Let me know if you've got a silhouette that might work and I can see if it will translate well into metal with your old busted up carabiners! www.davesclimbdesigns.etsy.com
