I am saddened to inform Jacks friends of his passing. I am glad to inform Jacks friends that his family would like you to join them in a celebration of his life.
A gathering will be held
SATURDAY JANUARY 21st from 2-5 pm at the
POSITIVE LIVING CENTER

Oakhurst,Ca.

His daughter has set up a go fund me account to assist with memorial costs
if you wish to help.

Is this the Jack Johnson that worked in Tuolumne Meadows and lived in Nevada city with his daughter??..I may be wrong about him living in Nevada city..That was the last place i talked to him at a music Festival with his daughter .. several years back.
I am deeply sadden ....

Yes Nita,
Jack worked in both Tuolumne and the valley. He was living in Oakhurst.
He did enjoy going to music festivals with his daughter.
A loving father for sure.

Jack was a great guy, kind of quiet and unassuming..always kind.
Very sad to see a photo of him in a hospital bed on life support..
A friend of mine asked me if i had a picture of him and i don't..Can you please post up a picture of him?.
Wish i could honor him and go to his memorial, i have plans to be in Sacramento that day....Also do you have his daughters snail mail address? You can email me her address if you want that info private,,my email is on my profile.

I'm so sorry to hear this, I worked in the TM store in the early 90's and would run into him from time to time in Oakhurst since then. He was just a solid, all around good person and my wife and I were always happy to run into him. We'd stand in the aisle at Von's and spend 45 minutes or an hour just catching up I tell you what, I've never seen anyone put more time and care into painting a house as him! My deepest condolences to his family and all who knew him. Godspeed, Jackness.

Jack sorry to say I never knew you...although you might have helped me back in the 80's when I bought some of the new fangled cam's in 86 in the Valley Mt. shop....
Sounds like you were a solid member of our "tribe" and many here are saying good things about you.
See you on that big bivi ledge in the sky someday.
I wish to extend my sincere condolences, to your Family and many many friends.

Chilly, Thanks for posting up a picture of Jack & his daughter...Is there any chance Jack's daughter has a picture of him from his Tuolumne/Yosemite days that she could share?
Also, there is a Yosemite group that posts up stories, pictures, memories and Obits..
It would be a good place to post Jacks passing and the gofundme memorial info..A picture of Jack from his Yosemite era included....

I am really missing my friend Jack today. I loved him. He was such an incredible person. Mostly devoid of jealousies and envy. He cared about people. He cared about the environment. He cared about love.
I was so lucky he was a part of my life.

Timid Toprope I share your dismay at the lack of posters on this thread. Like you said, many of them probably just didn't get the news. Jack embodied what is right in this life.
Wanted to share a story. Back in 1989 Jack and I went to Baja to hang glide. Some sand dune spot around Rosarita Beach. We arrived in San Diego and decided to go to the Zoo. That zoo is amazing, is it not?
Feeling a bit rebellious, mischievous, what not and of course the requisite climber cheap, we decided to find an alternative way into the zoo. We walked around the perimeter until we found a spot lacking scrutiny and climbed the fence into the zoo compound. Undoubtedly we were congratulating ourselves with the ease in which we pulled the wool over on the man when we rounded the corner and became aware of the fact that we were indeed in the zoo. Inside one of the animal enclosures.
Luckily for us, the giant tortoises were not to put off and we strolled through the pen and jumped a small wall to mingle with the crowd. Not 10 seconds later, a security guard passed by on a golf cart. Nobody ratted us out.
We continued to Mexico, set the hang glider up and had a few brief flights before crashing and bending the keel. This ended our hang gliding experience.
We returned to the LA area, as we had met two women on the grapevine and had made a date to go to Disneyland. When I say we had met two women on the grapevine, I mean exactly that. They passed us, we passed them and then either Jack or I had the brilliant idea of passing a coke bottle with a message to them while traveling seventy miles per hour. I bitch and moan about all the idiots texting and driving, but I must admit this wasnt the smartest of things to do. Message relayed, we pulled over to get acquainted.
So we meet these women, make these plans, go to San Diego, get a freebie to the zoo, go to Baja, crashed the glider and return to meet these women for a date at Disneyland.
Having succeeded at the San Diego Zoo, we again decide to go for the freebie and walk the perimeter of Disneyland to find a weak spot.
Lets just say Disneyland has a slightly better security set up. The guards told us after arresting me(Jack never attempted to climb the fence), that they were watching us as soon as we ducked behind the bushes. When I touched the fence an alarm went off and pretty much sealed my fate.I climbed up, because I said I was going to and got to the barbed wire part and thought better. I descended, turned around and saw shoes amongst the vegetation and bolted into the parking lot, Jack right on my heels. A number of golf carts and a number of large men surrounded us in the parking lot within a few seconds.
I was taken away, Jack was not. I sat in a "holding area" for maybe an hour until an Anaheim Police Officer came, cuffed me and took me to jail. He gave me the option of spending the weekend in jail or coming back another time. Seeing as we had a date with two nice looking women I told him Id come back. Disneyland security said I was barred for life and took a picture of me and put my picture up on a wall within their security office. My picture was one of 20.
Yosemite used to have a similar area which they called the Troglodyte Wall, where they kept photos of all the undesirables in the park. Maybe one or more of you ended up on that wall?
We had a date. Sorry, lifetime ban my buttocks. I went to the car, changed my shirt, put on a hat and we entered Disneyland. It was a good evening. A bit more costly in the end, but I will always remember that small adventure with Jack.

Jack was one of my first climbing partners in the Valley. We both worked at the Mountainshop. He was both humble and understated. We were on a "climbing trip" in Red Rocks (i.e. the entire winter in Red Rocks) when they made the road a loop. Jack didn't want to waste gas driving the entire 20 miles to exit after climbing at the gallery so we backed up all the way to the entrance. Back then there was virtually no traffic and/or climbers so this was totally doable. Bruce Davey had the excellent idea of collecting aluminum cans at the same time so we'd do this at turtle speed, with the VW bus door open. Dirtbags can be multitaskers, too.
Kevin, was this Disneyland trip the same one where Jack got stuck by lightning? He told me this was a really good experience, felt "buzzy" all day and recommended it. I also remember the botfly that hitchhiked on his butt from Belize. He told me the clinic MD was pretty psyched about it.
Some things I learned from Jack -- eating naturally, lifelong learning (he was self-taught at guitar and Spanish) and living simply -- all precepts I still abide by decades later. I appreciate that I was able to have such a solid climbing partner and friend in my first years of climbing.

Hey Julie,
Thanks for those pictures. As to your question, Jacks lightning ádventure was a different time. He and Steve Vinson were climbing OZ up in Tuolumne. I just heard the story again, which I had forgetten. Steve recounted it.
That bot fly created quite a buzz in the community. Yuck.Yuck. Still creeps me out thinking about it. Hope you are well and maybe we will cross paths. There has been some thought of a get together this summer. Will advise here if it is to happen.

I would like to add that Jack had no less than $300 bucks for that trip and wanted to learn how to sail so he went right up to a black creole family and got on their boat for a few weeks. Talk about making things happen!
