Jim followed Muir's advice to seek the mountains and the peace found there...
BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

Genuflect, genuflect...

Jim, I find peace of mind on the toilet, like old Martin Luther, but you don't wanna go there.

You may appreciate the following, some pics from the parish to which I belong.
Very beautiful gallery, Jim. Thanks.

I dunno, I prefer kneeling and then standing, sitting, then kneeling again, then probably standing again before kneeling again. Then going up and getting the wafer and then kneeling again. That's the kind of church that I like, but each to his own.

Yanqui....I'm heading down on 12/31 with Jay Smith...my wife is going down a few days earlier. Jay will stay for the month of Jamuary...we have a project on San Lorenzo. He's also bringing a fly rod and pack raft for non climbing days. My wife and I are staying thru Feb.

Religious/political threads can be beguiling but in the end they are a total waste of time....just a bunch of people pontificating closely held views to others with divergent but equally closely held opinions.
I am taking a personal vow to NEVER even open one here or on any other forum.

Great photo share Jim! It's awesome to know that the mountain gods let you survive climbing in all those beautiful places.

I never really thought much about the Sherpa belief in mountain gods, until I camped around 12,000', with a great view of the NE side of Dhaulagiri, 26,795'. I had no problems believing it is a holy place.

Another mineral goddess....this one of the basalt sect. More reasons for being a mineralist....they're always there for you, climbing them is the fun and appropriate way to worship them and they answer your prayers just as often as those other gods do, which means you don't have to waste valuable climbing time on your knees.

But perhaps the river gods get more attention.

And on some Idaho Rivers, you get a lot of chances to worship.

Religious thread bump!

On an exploratory drive to the north of Barilochi Argentina, in terrain that could have easily fit into South Idaho, this cloud capped strata-volcano looked pretty holy.

Volcán Lanín

Above Bariloche, the Frey group also looked worthy of worship.

But, the big river churches of Argentina & their parishioners also called out to me.

today I went to worship at a new catedral just an hour west of here. my first graben service.

the opening sacraments were sandy. really sandy. and rife with rat pellets. the rock was, well, wet brown sugar cube consistency. but the preacher! the preacher!

many epithets and cathartic Ave-RoCK! salutations of our savior ensued immediately upon initial ascent. rope-grooves were worn. challenges to one's personal relation with our lord and savior Loose Wingate were met.

as far as divinity, beyond the power of the Pastafari, the truth of the Totem spoke in actions.

Observable superhumanity.

Dog Bless!

"Get thee up into the high mountain."
Isaiah 40:9 CHARLES SPURGEON

Each believer should be thirsting for God, for the living God, and longing to climb the hill of the Lord, and see him face to face. We ought not to rest content in the mists of the valley when the summit of Tabor awaits us. My soul thirsteth to drink deep of the cup which is reserved for those who reach the mountain's brow, and bathe their brows in heaven. How pure are the dews of the hills, how fresh is the mountain air, how rich the fare of the dwellers aloft, whose windows look into the New Jerusalem! Many saints are content to live like men in coal mines, who see not the sun; they eat dust like the serpent when they might taste the ambrosial meat of angels; they are content to wear the miner's garb when they might put on king's robes; tears mar their faces when they might anoint them with celestial oil. Satisfied I am that many a believer pines in a dungeon when he might walk on the palace roof, and view the goodly land and Lebanon. Rouse thee, O believer, from thy low condition! Cast away thy sloth, thy lethargy, thy coldness, or whatever interferes with thy chaste and pure love to Christ, thy soul's Husband. Make him the source, the centre, and the circumference of all thy soul's range of delight. What enchants thee into such folly as to remain in a pit when thou mayst sit on a throne? Live not in the lowlands of bondage now that mountain liberty is conferred upon thee. Rest no longer satisfied with thy dwarfish attainments, but press forward to things more sublime and heavenly. Aspire to a higher, a nobler, a fuller life. Upward to heaven! Nearer to God!

"When wilt thou come unto me, Lord?
Oh come, my Lord most dear!
Come near, come nearer, nearer still,
I'm blest when thou art near."

...The mountain tops are just a shadow of the Almighty!

In the early 1980's drought winters, I did my best to bag some winter ascents of Cascade summits.

Mostly, the mountain Gods caught me in the act, & blew my sorry ass off of their summits.

Lower Cooper Spur in January early 1980's, when there should have been 10' of snow. The high winds & snow hit that night.

And the North Face of Hood & Cooper Spur from the same location.

However, in another early January, early 1980's venture into the Cascades, we apparently were found worthy by the Gods that rule Dragontail & Colchuck & bagged the Northeast Face of Colchuck in perfect conditions.

Along the way, I finally realized an alpine fantasy & enjoyed that Godly creation, spindrift, much like our departed hero Doug Tomkins enjoyed in this 1970's Chouinard poster. After a couple seconds of enjoyment, while my soul sang "HALLALEUAS," I noticed the spindrift was rapidly building up between me and the snow on a vertical bulge, where I was desperately trying to sink my axe into solid snow above. The Mountains Gods soon winched me up, & all was well.

Nice views from there of alpenglow on those other blessed peaks, all with their own mountain gods, with frozen Colchuck Lake at lower right.

Pretty nice view off SW to Rainier from up there.

I've been saddened to see most of the pictures, as the vast majority of the "cathedrals" don't go free. Thus, they are inferior, merely faint shadows of what "church" should be about, and their "gods" reside in weakness.

truly deserving of our attention

But they don't go free, so they can't ever be superior.

Bouldering. Free-soloing. Free-climbing. Those are the only things deserving of our attention, as only those are superior and expressions of the pinnacle of the sport. Slogging up mountains isn't even climbing. That's hiking, perhaps roped hiking.

Yawn.

I've worshipped more than a few in my lifetime.

I'm thinking that the real reason Donini goes to these fantastical places is to challenge himself with seeing how close he can come to capturing the moment in a snap.

Screw all that climbing stuff, the real prize is coming back and sharing these most out-of-mind, outrageous photos. I bet they even impress Jim himself, "Dang, I really did make it there!"

Thanks. I should have guessed based off the first two pictures. That's a stunning finish. I was hoping it was something within my paygrade, but I guess it will have to wait a year or six.

Thanks for posting that picture Reilly!

Stetind has a special place in my heart, and on my leg in the form of a tattoo.. =) I've stood on that flat summit three times. Pure magic every time. The clouds are often resting just below the summit plateau, so when you climb on top of it, all of a sudden, after a cold, wet and windy climb, you find yourself on a warm, sunny, calm and quiet football field in the sky.
