ElCap Report 10/8/16
By Tom Evans
Yo…My long running project, The ElCap Report, has finally come to an end. For me, it has been a path far different from that I had foreseen. I have had many great moments recording the events on ElCap and I have had some of the worst moments of my life. I want to thank all you readers and supporters who have made the Report possible. I will continue with my photography, so you can find me, like always, down at the ElCap meadow. Since I will still be shooting, for the rest of this season, and in the future, you can still get your photos from me. The website will remain as a contact point for those of you who need to get in touch about pics or copies of the Reports.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you and my best wishes for an interesting and productive life.
So that’s the way it is, on this Saturday, the 8th day of October, 2016, the end of the ElCap Report era.
Signing off… Capt. Tom.. still at the epicenter, of the center, of the universe… El Capitan!

That's a Sad if sassy report.
O Captain! My Captain! Related Poem Content Details
BY WALT WHITMAN
O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Walt Whitman

fond wishes and a hearty thank you.

The El Cap Report provided one of the most unique perspectives on climbing- though my wall days were some time ago, the ECR provided a wonderful, live, vicarious way to experience El Cap again.

Thanks, Tom, for all of your hard work- it was truly one of a kind, unique in all the world!

Wow, the end of an era.

Tom's reports kept the fires stoked for wall climbing for many folks. The El Cap report will be sorely missed.

Thanks again to Tom for all his efforts over the years.

He'll be back - they always come back...

It would be nice to see more of an occasional blog, whenever he feels like it, with more pix of people within 50 feet of the camera and less of yet another party in the Stovelegs. I powered my way through all reports for the year a few nights ago. Kind of seemed like every single day is a bit much - maybe for everyone.

I'm sure that Tom's really missed the Ask=a-Climber program he got aced out of. He adjusted to that well, I thought.

(Heartless bureaucratic bastards.)

At least he didn't have to put up with the annoyance of n00bs and know-nothings like these folks here.
He's now adjusting to life w/o El Cap Report.

I'm sure he'll appreciate that life is not just Cathedral Beach.

See ya in the meadow, TOM!!

English is my second language for me, so maybe I did not understand something. Did he say good bye, but then mention he will still be shooting people and posting the photos to his site, for the rest of the season and in the future?
In any case, a great benefit for those climbing on El Cap, thanks for all the years of work!

I can't even remember the days before Tom's El Cap report.

Every season the report came back online felt like Christmas. My life brightened up as I finally had something worthwhile to read with morning coffee besides bullshit news and politics.

The report provided inspiration and psyche for my own El Cap adventures each year.

But more then that, the report kept me in touch with what my friends...us small tribe of Monkeys were up to on the Big Cliff. It was a way to feel connected, even from afar...cube puking at my office desk.

I can't even begin to describe how much I'll miss seeing the regular report. But what worried me more was that maybe this "retirement" meant my friend Tom my be missing from my Yosemite experience. That would be a real tragedy. But thankfully Tom assures me he will be there taking his pics seasons to come....phew.

Thanks Tom.

I'm sorry to see the ECR go, but I know how much of a time suck is was for Tom to do the Report every single day.

Thanks for all the photos, all the time you spent on the Report, and for all the tips on how to get good shots on the Big Stone! Looking forward to seeing you in the Valley without you having to run off to do 5 hours of editing every day.

Hey Tom,
Thanks a ton for the stories and pics over the years. Meeting you in the valley was one of the best things that happened to me there. Your humor and calm wit always gave me the stoke I needed to get on the captain. The same humor and wit was also in attendance on occasions that I made the 'walk of shame.' Your words over the walkie talkie when I was days off the ground provided needed inspiration and your offer of a cold cobra as I limped towards the bridge after victory were more special than you know. I bet there are many others who feel the same about that cobra. I love telling people about my friend Mike Burke who arrived at the bridge after soloing Zodiac (looking like he had soloed Zodiac) and you asked him "Just get off the captain son? What route are you coming from? Want a cobra?" My suspicion is that scenario has played out many times at the bridge and the recipient of the cobra has always been blown away! I wish you all the best on a different schedule and look forward to the day I next see you in the valley.

All the best,
Doug
