Word just in!

Anders Ourom - the Mighty Hiker - will be in the Boulder area for an Access Fund event. That means it's time for a happy hour and a gathering of the tribe!

When: FRIDAY, October 21, 2016
Time: 6:00 pm.

Where: BrassNuts and Crimpergirl's house. Email for address and directions if needed: renn isonc@gmail dot com. Remove all spaces. You are welcome to pm me here too, but those private messages don't always seem to arrive to my email box.

Given we have no waitstaff and food preparers here, this is a BYOB and BYO-Chow event.

No pets please. No exceptions.

Looking forward to it!

Who is on the RSVP list besides Brick?

More to the point is whether he can be happy for an hour.
That's a tall order for those Scandihoovian existentialists!

Should the event morph into an impromptu fundraiser for Jello and Connie, that'd be fine with me. I could tell stories about BITGOD, when p'terodactyls nested on the Chief and stuff. Although if that leads to more attendees, we may outgrow Casa Crimpie/Brassie.

I arrive in Boulder Thursday evening, and will be staying at Casa Accomazzo. Leaving Monday noon. Apart from the Friday night happy hour, and the Access Fund's 25th anniversary dinner on Saturday, I'm free and available for modest adventures. (Still recovering, so emphasis on the modest.) Climbing, hiking, campaigning for Clinton, visiting Nederland - whatever anyone is up for. I'll have basic climbing and hiking stuff. Thanks!

I'm not sure there is a photo of that. Will have to ask around. Got a nice one of BN:

And some 'hold the camera up and shoot the crowd' as we were being seated for dinner. Maybe you can find all the STers out there. :)

Sorry to miss the get together at Crimpy and BN's, but it was fun hanging out with them at the AF cocktail and dinner.

More than a few of us were amazed to see a room of 400 reasonably well dressed climbers celebrating 25 years of the AF. Connecting with new and old friends and acquaintances was great.

The Black Diamond metal beer glasses we are clutching was a highly prized item. Rumor was it doubles as an emergency tube chock.

Along with Anders, I attended a few of the seminars/workshops earlier in the day. There were so many dedicated climbers from all over the US (and, yes Canada) whp are doing incredible projects. Very inspiring to say the least.

Thanks to everyone for a pleasant trip, and for all the hospitality!!

Gerry and Rick A, for providing a cozy billet, and great company! (Bonus: Meeting John J.)

The Crimpster, Brass Nuts and Pente, for hosting a wonderful get together on Friday night. Jan S, Rodger R, Pam R, George B, Elizabeth & Greg (aka Eeyonkee), Steve W, Gerry & Rick, Aya, Nature, and others were there too. Although Rodger had an almost four hour drive - one way!

Eeyonkee, for climbing with me in Eldorado on Friday - the "get fit again" process evidently will take a bit more time and effort. Plus we talked about his solo free ascent of Pipeline in 1979, looked at Glenn's photo from the FA in 1966, and speculated as to who might have tried it in the interim (as hinted at in the 1975 guide), and where the pipes ended up.

Brass Nuts, for our conkwest of the Third Flatiron on Monday, and our foray into Whole Paycheque. Many snowy mountains to the west, if not the continental divide, were visible from it. (The descent from the flatiron seemed disproportionately challenging, in comparison to the climb.) Probably the last sunny outdoor climb I'll have for a while.

It was also interesting to visit two historical climbing areas, where considerable effort has been put into protecting their heritage.

The Access Fund's 25th anniversary dinner on Saturday was great fun. I was very active in access and related matters, and the Climbers' Access Society of BC, from the early 1990s until about 2008, and since then have had a limited role. Other responsibilities, time to move on... But when I got a note from Armando in July, mentioning the dinner, and closing with (roughly) "You'll be there. Won't you?", I decided to attend. The AF was always supportive of what we did in BC, and something of an inspiration. (Indeed, the Access Society - CASBC - helped stimulate formation of LCOs in Penticton and Squamish, and access groups in Alberta and Ontario. Plus did some useful stuff.) So it seemed a good excuse for a wild weekend. By my standards, anyway.

Tons of friends, old and new, at the dinner, and a very busy night, where they gave us drinks, then having anaesthesized us, separated us from our money. (ABF - Always Be Fundraising.) Timmy O'Neill was the MC, Armando and John J talked about how the AF got started, a young woman from New York talked about the importance of organizations such as the AF being inclusive, and Tommy Caldwell gave an amusing talk about where climbing has been, and where it might be going. There was even an auction.

I've been to five or six AF summits, the first IIRC in Seattle in 1998. At that time, most of those attending were male, white and middle-aged or older. There was a significantly higher percentage of women and younger people at the summit on Saturday, and some persons of colour. (The new AF president, Kenji Haroutunian - maybe related to Ed H? - is of Armenian and Japanese ancestry. Although he's admittedly male and middle aged.) So that's progress - something which in multicultural BC we can learn from. As climbers, we need to remember and learn from the past, but always be looking to the future.

Overall, a great weekend, now back to the land of rain and work.

Anders & all! It sounds like great fun. Thanks for sharing the story & photos.

I flew down to Denver & spent a long weekend in Boulder with my old friend Bruce Franks & his wife Meg, somewhere around 1974. He was sales manager for Longmont-based Camp 7 at the time.

Of course, we had to climb something, & the 3rd Flatiron, was ready, willing, & supine for our fun. I do remember the top of the descent was short, but steep & a little complicated.

My last time climbing in Colorado.

Sigh.

So at the AF dinner on Saturday, there was quite a silent auction. (I bid on a few things, unsuccessfully.) All sorts of goodies. One of them was a "crag dog" package, with a nice blankie for doggie to lie on, a (short) leash, and stuff. So Callie, Dave and I naughtily added "Dog not included" to the auction sheet. Perhaps Pente if not Donini would have approved, but I understand that dogs are a major problem at crags there.

I would argue that dogs are really never the problem... the owners who bring them along and then let them run rampant are nearly always the real problem. :-)
