As someone who also has a newborn it's hard to fathom the priorities of the OP here.... Baby due at any moment, dog has broken legs , and daddy seeks help and $$$ for the dog?

Put the dog on the back burner and the vet bills on the credit card , I just can't imagine going online looking for a handout for a pet....

Killing your dog(unlikely someone would adopt in time) as a new baby is born will be a harsh memory of an amazing event.

I've donated and shared with a dog loving community. It will happen.

Ya I'll just kill the dog because OUR lives are more important...lol

Even if we can find a home for the dog which we still may have to do, it still is costing us money just to have it at the ASPCA here in SF awaiting the bone specialist to give us options and look for a adoptee.

Of course if it were between the health of our baby or my wife we would have to make decisions but being super negative about another persons situation is not super helpful.

But troll on you old crusty trolls, this is a public forum and I knew what I was asking for when I posted this here.

Credit card may certainly have to happen. With the baby coming we can risk maxing out our card but we put about 700 last night for ex-rays, pain meds and splint. We also just purchased plane tickets for my mother and my wifes mother to come see the baby. So we don't want to stretch it to thin.

I have worked super hard for everything I have in my life and this is the first time I have ever asked for help. For anything. Yes I f*#ked up and should have got pet insurance sooner, we go the dog a few months ago.

Doing this fundraiser is helping take her mind of the dog and reduce stress to the baby as-well.

I don't expect that anyone donate who doesn't want to or can't afford to. I recently donated to a friend who's house burned down and thought I would try to see if we could raise some funds for Juno.

We appreciate the care and suggestions.

I spent a lot of money on my little dog. I could afford it because I've lived carefully.

Since your dog is apparently young and healthy otherwise, I would have looked into pet insurance.

I might be a bit old fashioned, but the whole "Go Fund Me/Asking Strangers for Money" thing baffles me a bit. I guess I have mixed feelings. In times of dire need, such "funding" schemes seem to bring out the best in a community......but when the "ask" is anything short of catastrophically dire, I feel a strange sense of "hey, you have more of a responsibility to take care of this than we, total strangers, do." There is something humbling about asking for help that is good for all of us sometimes, but it often strikes me as irresponsible and selfish. I would personally never consider asking strangers to help out with vet bills, which are a total part of life....a normal expenditure that needs to be considered prior to owning a pet. This just doesn't seem "noble" enough to go out and raise financial support for in my opinion. I know that's terribly arbitrary, but its just what came to mind when I read this OP. Though I have no way to really justify that feeling. It just comes across as lazy or shortsighted/immature I suppose. That sounds really harsh I suppose.....you sound like a good dude in a tough spot. I'm just processing this whole phenomenon I guess.

Perhaps much of this "go fund me" phenomenon" taps into the same central need some passerbys have to drop cash in the hand of a "homeless" man who really in all probability is a con-man, a thief and/or a drug abuser. I Work a good bit with the homeless in our city.....and one of the first things you learn is how many scammers/thieves/tweakers are on the street corners and how few of them are truly "in need". Many who work in homeless shelters or women's homes tend to give on street corners because we know where that cash goes. Many folks give to your typical guy at the stoplight because it makes "the giver" feel good, a totally selfish reason if you really look into the motive. Not necessarily trying to point out right or wrong motives for giving but I find it really interesting.

I'm not saying this is the same thing, just batting a few thoughts around in this scenario and why people give and why people ask. Overall, I'd probably give of my time....quicker than I'd donate some dollars for your vet bills. If we were friends and you lived close I'd help out in any way I could, but as a stranger I really feel like its your responsibility, not your communities to get you out of this tight time. Some will give and feel good about it. Some won't give and feel bad about it. Most of us are probably in between somewhere. I hope for quick mending for your pooch and a smooth delivery for your baby and wife. Good luck with the funding. Start saving NOW for that kid! Sell the rack, take up less hobbies for a while, buy ramen instead of steak and say goodbye to any coffee at Starbucks for a few years.....these kids are expensive!!! I have four of em, they'll break you! But may your days as a proud and invested dad bring you more joy than you can imagine in the days to come. I hope may people give and that the pooch heals up fast.

Rant over. Take care man.

Of course if it were between the health of our baby or my wife we would have to make a decision

But it's not. It's between you finding a way to pay for your dogs surgery and you asking other people to pay for your dogs surgery.

For the rest of us, it's between spending the money on your dogs surgery vs. spending it for our dog's (or family's) benefit. Or maybe it's vs. donating the money to help maintain other healthy dogs in a shelter so they won't have to be euthanized before someone willing to accept responsibility for caring for them comes along.

Best wishes to you and your family and your dog!

Its ok if you don't get it. One day you may need the help from a stranger/s and then it might click. Wether it be making a donation to a cause that you can relate to or helping a stranger change a flat tire, random acts of kindness are what changes the world for the better. Not negativity and greed. Helping a person for no other reason than to help them is awesome and I hope more people recognize what a difference they could make with such little effort.

Well OK. Thanks for giving us this opportunity and self-serving moral instruction. You're a mensch.

Again, best wishes for you guys, and sorry if that's not enough for you.

But just for clarity, what's the moral connection that you're trying to make by dragging your wife and baby into this? I thought it was about a dog, and our lack of moral righteousness. You couldn't find a baby that needs adopting, or did you not even try?

Sorry, but in my misunderstanding and unrighteous way, I'm saving my money to take care of my adopted children, and my biochild's lifelong battle with autism. If you want to contribute to all that, great! but I understand that you have a dog to care for, so no worries, if not.

If your vet wont take payments, find a different vet. I've never heard of a vet that is not willing to take payments.

What's next? Crowd-sourcing the cost of your forthcoming labor and delivery costs? Your kid's vaccinations? Your kid's tuition???

High gloss. you are definitely not helping your case by attacking Locker the way that you are. I may not always agree with locker, but I respect him.

As for Lockers point. I believe his point is that if you are having a baby, and you decide to get a dog, then you should have the means to care for them, including emergencies. I believe its understandable if your child gets some serious illness and it takes hundreds of thousands of dollars that you weren't prepared to spend, but beyond that, if you were short a few thousand, which is the case here, then you didn't really have enough to get a dog.

I tend to agree with him.

Locker, I said that because you jumped on him without knowing the background. I see it two ways.

One.. you should try your best to have the means to care for things like animals because you chose to have them.

Two.. sometimes life happens and you need some help. Do whatever you can to not need the help, but once you do, then you do.

you jumped without knowing.. thats why I said what I did.

Highgloss. I suggest giving up on attacking locker. It's a no win situation. He is stating many truths and his opinion.

Having pets is tough at times. Costs can skyrocket. Horses can be astronomical. I suggest setting limits in your mind before you ever get a pet. I have set limits and I hope I can hold to them when and if the time comes.

What's the most here people have spent on a pet?

My moms dog once cost 8k and she did not survive. ;-( It took a long time to pay off that credit card...

Got to say I'm with Locker. If you think fixing a dog's leg is bad financially, parenthood expenses are going to be brutal. It is that juxtaposition of a kid coming and a fru-fru dog you can't even pay the vet bills on that I find very jarring.

Both our last 2 pooches had some serious medical bills in their last couple years, and it never occurred to me to get other folks to cover them, we paid them without hesitation and adjusted our lifestyle to recover from the expense. We operate with decent financial safety margins, keeping our spending down to a level that lets us do so. Right now over a third of my income is being poured into savings and retirement accounts. We decided against getting more dogs in part due to the cold hard calculation that kid expenses were more important to properly fund than pooch costs.

My cars are all paid off, our roof replacement was done with cash, and I have planned out my the day of my retirement. I don't eat out, I ride my bike to work and the store, our house always looks a little shabby, I always look a little shabby, I switched to store brand IPA and 2-buck chuck, and I ratchet down every expense I can that will not impact our happiness significantly.

If one pooch bill puts you into the poor house enough to go begging, you have a god damned financial emergency on your hands!

I won't weigh in on the ethics of asking for the help. But, I do take exception to the "oh so trendy" Dogs are our Family quote. No they're not. If you put your dog's life up against one of my kids, or wife, or mom or dad, or anyone's real family, I will probably slug you. And that's been known to hurt.

Carry on, but a dog, or a cat or a bird, snake, any pet is not your family. If you don't have any family, that's OK, but you don't get a dog and now you have a family. Sorry. No matter how much that dog means to you. I will never respect it as if I would your family. Not specifically this cute dog ( I think it is) but anybody's dog.

I don't eat out, I ride my bike to work and the store, our house always looks a little shabby, I always look a little shabby, I switched to store brand IPA and 2-buck chuck, and I ratchet down every expense I can that will not impact our happiness significantly.

My friend, you are naive and wildly out of touch with how our society is SUPPOSED to work! You are trying WAY too hard, and you should just relax and go with the flow!

You are supposed to have two or more cars that are beyond your means, so that you can have massive car payments at ridiculous interest (because your credit is so bad), crippling your cash flow.

Get nice wheels and tires on those too (for looks more than utility), as well as an expensive, LOUD, booming, thumpy stereo, so that everyone within half-a-mile has to PAY ATTENTION to YOU, as all are forced to partake in whatever gangster-rap "song" you listen to.

With what tiny cash flow you have left, be sure to get some really nice clothes. Be sure to stay always shod in crystal clean, name-brand sports shoes that you paid at least $100 per foot to enjoy. These will have to be replaced often, so that you can keep "the look." Same goes for your name-brand sports jacket slash hoodie and designer jeans (that you'll pay extra for to get the cut that ensures that the waist cinches around your upper thighs). If you didn't spend at least $60 for your hoodie, you're not stylin'. The jeans go for $100 minimum. Less than that, and you're not stylin'.

Now that you're absolutely spending more than you "earn," IF you actually do earn anything at all, you can start complaining about how you are forced to live in substandard housing, have no mobility, no health care, no college education, etc. Life has done you dirty, and "we the people" OWE you better!

While moaning about how you can't even afford food anymore, at your next trip to Walmart be sure to pick up a nice 60-inch, 4k, Samsung or Sony flat-screen and 4k Blu-ray player to go with it.

In the checkout line, put that on a virtually maxed-out credit card, along with the two cartons of cigs that your food stamps won't pay for. Those two cartons should just about you get and your current baby-mama through the upcoming week.

Then moan and snivel to the cashier about how "they" don't give you enough to "support a family" on food stamps, while you buy your Cheetos, candy bars, ice cream, steaks, pork rinds, and piles of other entirely non-nutritious items, paying with the money society GAVE you because you are so underprivileged.

When the pile of "food" exceeds what you have in food stamps, hold up the check-out line as long as necessary for your four pre-teen but already 250-pound children to help you sort through the piles of junk "food" to determine which items you can "do without." All the while, bitch and moan about how "hard" your life is and how society perpetually does you dirty.

(I've repeatedly seen the above scene played out, without exaggeration, right in front of me.)

Then, drag the carts of purchases out to your nicely-decked-out Escalade (with wheels and tires that cost more than a year's worth of food), and struggle to fit your beefcake kids AND that new TV into even the capacious back-end of that thing. While moving out into traffic, be sure to bitch to your fat kids out of your fat mouth that it's outrageous that Obamacare is taking so long to pass. Damn those Republicans who "won't do anything to help" and so only obstruct the good, good Democrats who "think like one of us" and therefore "really care."

And at home, when your dog does break a leg, write your congresscritter (on a computer you put on a credit card) to moan about how necessary pets are to human well-being and DEMAND the RIGHT to free pet-health-care.

Reality check, can't afford the dog? Bet you can't afford a kid either.
Pet health insurance. Won't get another pet without it.
Sorry about the dog, hope he/she gets feeling better SOON, one way or another.

Some wild thinking here for the OP, why not get a second job? Put the pooch on the credit card for the time being and drive for Uber until it's paid off. You're in the City right ? It wouldn't take more than a few months to get that $4500...

140 characters is kind of the limit of the web viewer attention span...

LOL... you "kind of" exceeded your own limit (almost double) by typing 219 characters, not counting the many line-feeds.

If your claim is even close to correct, then it explains the cognitive limits of the libtard mind, which itself explains why voters who continually want "free" stuff are so utterly unable to understand cogent arguments that oppose their "gimme" mentality.

Sad!

I'm so glad that I didn't bring kids into this world to share the misery your kids are doomed to endure.

Update. Wow so much love in here. Regardless, we made enough today for the 1000 deposit! Titanium plates have been ordered by the vet specialist, dog well medicated and wife less stressed.

My deepest gratitude for those who were able to contribute!

Thank you!

Very interesting question. Maybe because on the Ogre it was a question of life and death involving human beings who were beloved by many in the climbing community.... as opposed to a guy with a dog with a busted leg who doesn't want to hurt his credit report with a high balance....

Arne

Whoa Arne!

Not putting my dog up against your family or anyone else's.
When I say "dogs are family" it's not meant to minimize or disparage the love or bond or commitment you have with your family. Sorry you take it like that, and seriously enough to offer up some beef. Really?
To me, my dog IS family, and my human family agrees, and that's all that really matters to me.

Being fiercely protective of your family is awesome and respectable...
telling me who is and isn't to be considered my family isn't.

Relative anonymity of the internet enables people to act in ways they would wouldn't in the "real world".

How likely would people be to make a cardboard sign and stand on the street corner to panhandle for the funds to fix a dog? The gofundmes removes this stigma, but it is still the same thing.

Amputate the limb if you are short on cash and want to keep the dog.

3 legged dogs are super cute.
Between the gimpy pooch and a new baby, you'd probably be neck deep in sympathy pussy if you bring them both to the pub.
I say take the gopayme money, the baby, and the three legged dog to the bar and go get some 21 year old poontang.

And you're spending the $1000 on your dog instead of on my baby's $100,000 autism remediation bill?! Fine, be that way :-)

It's OK if you don't get it. I've been there too, and spent a ton of my own money prekids for cancer treatment for a dog that died a month later.

And I hope you have money for your kids treatments, when the time comes. Or trust others to have it for you. But if others are spending their money on your dog this time, maybe you'd better learn how to plan to save some of your money for your baby, just in case they need it, and others can't afford to spare it when your baby does need it. And they will need it, if, you know, they actually exist :-)

The presumption for me anyway is that these GFM's are for when other resources don't exist or have been exhausted.

Doesn't seem to fit here, but use Ruby's contribution and hopefully learn something from this sad story.

Do you know personally any of the people involved in the two situations?

Because I doubt it's as black and white as you note.

For my part, I only know that which has been posted on this site regarding the situations.

I'm curious about crowd-sourcing requests and how people react or respond to them.

How do you respond to a person on the street asking for money?

Do you dump on them about lousy life choices ?

Good points, Tami.

To me, my dog IS family, and my human family agrees, and that's all that really matters to me.

Choosing one over the other doesn't imply the one not chosen isn't family. It's just implies you have a hard, shitty choice to make. Wanna try again?
