Prior to the Gimli Glider event in Canada in 1983 flight crews did little or no sim work for
engine out scenarios and, in fact, aircraft manuals did not even provide any specs for gliding.
Luckily, the Gimli Glider pilot, who was partly responsible for its running out of fuel, was an
experienced glider pilot, which most likely contributed to that event's happy ending. Another
Canadian crew (is there a pattern there?) ran out of fuel over the Atlantic and glided
150 miles to a safe landing at Funchal, Azores!
