I grew up playing for fun, I do not know chess inside out. I cheat against the computer (taking back moves) because I think it cheats against me.

Why is this a draw? Seems to me I had the black king nailed.

Also, sometimes my pawn (my move) will take an opposing pawn but instead it takes me (and it was my move).

This is the game that came with my iMac.

I ask here because it is the only forum I participate in, well climbing.ie sometimes (used to Irish Times, BBC and San Francisco Chronicle forums but no longer). I am sure I could look up the rules but a) I am too lazy and b) I have a lot to do today (so you must wonder, "but you have time to play chess". It's my coffee break time, I still have to paint the dining room and kitchen, and get my new website, health-horizons.info off the ground, tackling dementia).

By the way, I was asked where my avatar photo was… the Arboretum, Columbia College, Tuolumne County, 1975.

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. (Bobby Dylan)

if it's black's move it's a draw because while the black king isn't currently in check, every move available puts the king in check. You can't move into a check position. So it's a draw.

Thanks Sheepdog, that explains it.

Though I should have known that, duh…

Maybe I have dementia.

If it is black's move he can take the rook - not a draw.
White is a retard if he loses or allows a draw.

Reilly if KxR, QxK. So, it's a draw.

Looks to me like the Rook on c6 is defended by the Queen on f6. No?

The picture wuality had me fooled into mistaking the king for the queen.
Yes, if it is black's move then white was a retard.

Do you play online?
I would suggest Chess(dot)com. It has a lot of information for beginners and it has a board that is easier to use.

So using the transitive property of stupidity, in summary, the reason it's a draw is because you're a retard. Chess teaches us that we're smart that way.

I coded a pathetic little chess agent in an AI class a while back that somehow won the class tournament, despite my agent's poor play from both sides of the board. It couldn't fight its way out of a paper bag, but fortunately paper bags are hard to code.

I named my agent Eyeore in honor of the way it could mess things up playing either black or white. Turns out I was better at calling my agent names than at coding it.

Eyeore, the old grey Donkey, stood by the side of the stream, and looked at himself in the water.

'Pathetic,' he said. 'That's what it is. Pathetic.'

He turned and walked slowly down the stream for twenty yards, splashed across it, and walked slowly back to the other side. Then he looked at himself in the water again.

'As I thought,' he said. 'No better from this side. But nobody minds. Nobody cares. Pathetic, that's what it is.'

My stepdad played Bobby Fischer to a draw once. Of course Fischer was playing 100 games at once. He's still proud of it, figuring that he is no where near being 1/100th as good as Fischer.

PhilG, I wouldn't say I am a beginner, I have been playing since I was young, I just never really learned all the rules, even some of the simple ones, I play for fun or to relax.

But yes, the last two moves I could have put the Black King in mate if I was thinking, but obviously I wasn't thinking. I blame it on the coffee.

And I guess I am a retard.

Every partial picture tells a partial story don't it. Where are the remainder of the pieces in Patrick's obviously 3-dimensional game?

Also, can we get some standardization here as to what pieces actually look like?

You know, I must be stupid because I know the King cannot move into a check position, so I (White) should have played the last two moves differently. Maybe I am tired. Or just a retard.

I played chess as a kid but just got tired of the mental focus required. And yes, I are a retard two.

Ah yes, the Chess-Pros's!!! Almost as many 'climbing experts'.

Play the game. It's good. Very mind-blowing game that endured centuries for good reason.

I love chess, and all the 'experts' I play. Great game.

Never play a russian with a full bottle of vodka. He's playing you. Empty bottle? It's war and you still lose.

This is why you never go to war with Russians (or Americans). They always win. They know strategy, they know sacrifice. They just have they will to execute.

Russia and the US should never go to wAR.

Paddy, 99% of Russian 5 year olds kids would win that as white. The remaining 1% don't
play chess. Order Lev Alburt's Comprehensive Chess Course-Vol 1.
Yer not a retard, you just don't know the basics. ;-)

When you can mate a lone king with a bishop and knight in 23 moves we'll talk. :-)

I've been told, but cannot verify that Reilly is the fine looking gent behind the guy with glasses.

He knows his chess, even played Nancy "Nanny" Roos to a draw with a stunning rebuttal to her "Polish Opening".

However, it was at his direction that "glasses" removed a piece from the board whilst the others were distracted. Keep a sharp eye out if you play him.

Read it here, if you dare.

Hey, that puts him better than Bent Larsen or Mark Taimanov!

I once had my ass handed to me by David Bronstein. What an honor that was.

I was a denizen of The Last Exit On Brooklyn coffee house in the U District of Seattle where
a young skateboarder named Yasser Seirawan* honed his killer instincts starting at about 11
IIRC. He never deigned to play me but we would often be at adjoining tables so I can claim
to have had a brush with chess fame, however vicariously. It was the first and last great
coffee house in Seattle - you could nurse a cup or a 25 cent PB&J samich for all evening
with nary a worry of getting the bum's rush.

* (for the Illiterati - he would go on to multiple US Champion titles
and a world Top Ten ranking)

Hey, that puts him better than Bent Larsen or Mark Taimanov!

He maintains to this day that it was dumb luck. Any of the other 100 people who Fischer was playing at the same time could have done it. Then I remind him that they didn't, and he sits up a little taller.

My tendency toward hyperactivity interferes with any chance of playing chess even remotely well. An old friend of mine who fancied himself to be quite the player used to sit down with my stepdad once in a while, until he grew tired of losing. There was a small group of faculty at the State U of New York at Buffalo. I remember them playing at our house, it was very serious stuff, one of the few times when he didn't mind if I stayed out too late...

Hey, zBrown, that's a screenshot from "Court Martial". Spock just won his 5th game, after having programmed the computer some months ago, with a knowledge equal to his own. Theoretically, he should have been able to do no better than stalemate after stalemate. "Well, Spock, what are you waiting for?" says Bones. They beam down just moments too late, after the court closes the case against Kirk. But then Cogley speaks up and convinces the court to put the computer on the stand. Finally, after turning off everyone's heartbeat on the ship, Kirk finds Ben Finney on the lower decks, near Engineering, and saves the Enterprise and everyone aboard, including Finney's daughter, from burning up in a decaying orbit. The prosecuting attorney, a Kirk heartthrob, says she did pretty well this time, she lost. Hey, isn't that a case of conflicting interest?

This is called a "stalemate".
Black has no "legal" moves. I.e. moving king into check is not legal.
This word may help you remember it.
When you are way ahead, try not to let this happen!

P.S. Reilly, my friend and best chess player in my high school has known Yasser Seirawan since junior high school.
I enjoyed watching some of his chess videos on youtube a few months ago.

Stale, mate?

Open up the window, let some air into this room
I think I'm almost chokin' from the smell of stale perfume
And that cigarette you're smokin' 'bout scare me half to death
Open up the window, sucker, let me catch my breath

Sharp eye clode. I'm more of a Wild Wild West or Blade Runner kinda guy.
