I dream about falling, and gliding when I should fall, quite a lot.

Last night, I was guiding people to their safety (seemingly), and I was following the group. We got to a vertical rime section just before the summit. It was a small elephants back, and crumbling all around me. I plunged my hands into the snow to keep from slipping, and the whole fridge sized chunk gave way with me on it.

I fell, probably a couple of hundred feet, sliding the last third or so.

Instead of waking up freaking out, I stuck the landing and climbed back up to the group.

What does it mean, man?

And, does anyone else have these sorts of dreams?

I've fallen in a number of dreams. Often time with a big cushy bounce of a landing or falling into a glide that turns into a flying dream. On the flip side I often run in my dreams but just cant seem to make my legs move fast enough, like I'm in slow motion or underwater. Funny thing is I remember telling myself I know I can run faster and thinking whats wrong, why cant I run like normal?

Last night I dreamt I was a centaur but had the head and face of Colt Seavers from The Fall Guy....but was young, like in my 20's. All the people around me kept telling me I was the most beautiful creature in the forest. No lie. That was my dream. Anybody care to interpret it for me.

I dream about falling

Pretty normal . . . better than the ones where you're plunging off the cliff in your vehicle.

This will be my 50th year rock climbing, and I've taken many leader falls; including a 100+ footer.

I've never had a dream about climbing or falling. I also got wounded twice in Vietnam, one of which was pretty bad. Never had a dream about Vietnam either.

Wow. Just wow. SteveA, how is it even possible that you have had no dreams about falling, or about VIETNAM?
Did you tell the tale of your wounds on the Ghosts of Vietnam thread? I apologize if my memory has failed me on this point. If you haven't, please do.
I'd like to meet you.

I do dream of drowning and wake up trying to catch my breath.

What ever that means,

Sleep Apnea.

Your airway becomes blocked by soft tissues during REM sleep, and you stop breathing. Eventually, you come out of REM and almost, but not quite, wake up and start breathing again.

Other symptoms are waking up with a headache, or waking up still very tired after a long night's sleep. Obnoxious snoring is another symptom.

It's really hard on the heart, and can be a serious health hazard. It can lead to daytime narcolepsy. Pilots and other machinery operators have to get special medical clearance if they are diagnosed with sleep apnea.

I just use three fat pillows, so that I sleep halfway sitting up, and it seems to work. Sleeping on your side also works. Sleeping flat on your back is the worst position for the condition.

Some people wear a Darth Vader gas mask thing that pumps air into their lungs (CPAP machine).

Survival,

In all honesty, I don't sleep that well, but it isn't related to any stress related memories. It has more to do with arthritis etc.
I never dream about any close calls, and I've had many, but my encounters with lightning on a few big alpine climbs, bring back memories, which seem to be more vivid, than my other experiences.

As a young kid I had some pretty horrific falling dreams, usually related to flying. Now if I have any dream about climbing, I am always sending! Ah, but then I wake up...

Well, I've been climbing for 24 years now so...

And, the gliding thing is the most prevalent. I'll be skiing, hit a roller or kicker, and I'm off! Gliding with the slope and all is well. Super fun, really. Stuff that I can't do in the default world. I guess I could take up speed flying, but, no.

Sometimes get ones where I'm talus running faster and faster and leaping higher and higher, until I'm taking 50-100-foot-high bounds at a time. And yep^^^ pure fun, only wish I could do it for real. It would require low gravity.

steveA ..... Thank you for your service. Respect.

I hardly ever dream, when I sleep. I have never dreamed about falling rock climbing.

Now Ice is a different story....... it's always the same. I sense that the anchors fail and I go over backward. Then I see my boot go overhead in my mental photo, with bright blue sky and chunks of ice sparkling in the blue sky..... then I wake up with a start.

When I was Ice Climbing regularly this dream was happening all the time.

weird.....

I did dream about looking at corn in poo.... couldn't put that one together till now.

And did you know that the job of your appendix is to reassemble corn. TRUE... a Doctor told me that one.

When I was toddler age I used to dream that I would be in a car, night, crossing a bridge. Suddenly I'd be out of the car flying through the darkness and headed toward the creepy murky water below. These dreams evolved into toys that would reanimate, an individual with a human body but the head of a collie (like Lassie), and pentagrams painted on the wall with blood. Had a shrink tell me that my dreams were like those of someone who as a baby had been used as a token of sacrafice during Satanic rituals. Go figure that creepy sh#t. I think she just wanted my business...

I only dream about falling after very stressfull climbs. once ever coupple of years or so... I have heard that if you fall and land in your dream you don't wake up..... i used to get a lot of flying dreams. pretty rare now. i would run downhill flapping my arms and then dive forward while flapping. if I did it just right i could fly. it's really hard getting altitude and getting past the powerlines or out of the house through a window but once you get up to a certain height it gets really easy and you can cruise arround all over the place :)

hey there, say, brandon- ...

many times dreaming, is about things that aren't fully settled in our
mind (hence, our spirit) ...

if we feel we have come to terms with things, conquered things,
or, any of the list of etcs, then, these things don't usually get dreamed about...

if you dream about stuff that you are in the process of wondering,
learning, or figuring out, or worried about outcomes, etc:

then, many of these 'neither good nor bad outcome' dreams--your're
dreaming as to how you may be feeling, at this point in time...

then, too, as we all know:
any serious or big trip or event, coming up,
if it feels 'too foreign or we'd feel unsure in some way'
dreams seem to pop up with all kinds of very odd situations
running through the mind, on those things...

you will get used to yourself, and how you dream...
you can actually learn a lot about yourself, etc,
or, prompt youself to 'get more settled' if you
think about them, as to what is going on in your life, at the moment...

hope that helps... :)

sometimes, if folks block out really bad stuff, or,
are really afraid to deal with very serious issues,
or have had a serious shock, as to a situation:

they will find that those make re-occurring nightmares... :(

talking and praying, and asking for help, with others,
can help work at getting these things well...

I've had many dreams of falling, and during the fall thinking I'm about to die, then hit and wow, that didn't hurt. None involved climbing.
Flying dreams are cool, love those.

A couple of nights ago I dreamed I was running and it was how I once ran back in the day, then I woke up, ugh, cause I can barely run now, if you wanna call it that.

I dream about falling regularly. Not frequently, but regularly. Somehow I always wake up.
It's the airplane crash dreams that freak me out. Oddly, they're usually crashing near me, not on me.

I've had many dreams where I'm suddenly out of balance, lurch, and nearly fall, but then wake up just before the fall becomes a fall. When I wake up, my thoughts are always something like: "That was scary!" Sometimes those dreams are falling out of bed or off a sidewalk, sometimes they occur on a mountain.

I can't remember a dream where I actually completed a fall, but I had more than my share of lead falls in my youth, when close friends started calling me "Free-fall Fritz."

Heidi, who did a bunch of skydives in her 20's (like 26 on her 26th birthday) has very pleasant flying dreams on a regular basis. She drops into a Superman position and really enjoys the flights.

I've had very few climbing dreams, more skiing/snowboarding dreams. One time I dreamt there was a ski resort at the Hulk, and somehow my 96 year old grandmother was there slaying lines wearing a purple fur coat. That was a good one.

The only repeat dream I ever had was of falling. Maybe about 10 of them for me between the age of 8-10. I would fall of of something and despite feeling the lurch of gravity and the wind rushing by, the visual aspect was is hyper slow motion. I would always hit the ground in a plume of dust from the impact, but be fine. A few of them I would get up and walk into another part of the dream, others I would soon wake up from. I think I had one or two repeats in my early 20s.

My dreams are often very very psychedelic. I've kept a dream journal two different times in my life. It's a wonderful exploration of your creative potential and psyche, but it has some pitfalls. Journaling your dreams WILL make you better at remembering the details of your dreams in general, but eventually it can be too much. I started to remember every object on every surface, the color, position, the way the light was inflecting, facial expressions, dialogue etc. Next thing i know I have to write 10-15 pages every morning. If you have the time for that, that's one thing, but its also mentally taxing to recall so much detail and bring it to the page.

A few times I dreamed of falling, but like many here woke up before I hit the ground. I also used to have flying dreams where I could just take off and cruise around through the trees or as high as I wanted to go.

Those were always fun. I have had many dreams of climbing up short faces and getting to a point where I thought I would fall.

Not often but a few times, I have thought, "this is a dream, you can control it" and hand holds appear and I climb to the top.

I was in track in high school and I used to have a dream where I was running as fast as I could , but kept falling forward until I had to put my hands down and go on all fours, I would push myself up and run on just two legs but could not keep from falling forward again.

I love to dream.

Freud would love this thread..

Yes drowning in dreams can point out hart problems,

Un common dreams are the ones that disturb me, re-occurring dreams, while disconcerting
Seem more & more like familiar re-runs of metaphors for my life.
I try hard to sleep well, with mixed results. If you're really troubled,
Do not take or drink, go for a walk then straight to bed
I'm not sure, no dreams? That seems more like, not recalling them
Or the dreams being out of focus. Try a hot toddy no alcohol, just sweet water 'n lemon , Squeezed fresh before bed, (if you wan to remember your dreams)

When I fall in a dream I usually just end up on the ground. Going off the ledge, and then on the ground. Nothing in between. I'm always on a ledge.

When I jump instead, I know by now that there's a change in life ahead of me. When I jump, it doesn't have to be a ledge. Usually it's a white house and it's burning. I dream a lot about houses. There's certain images which I remember from dreams, the way the light comes into a room through wooden shutters, the layout of the place...

Sleeping is like going to the movies, in periods. I love it when next night picks up where the dream ended and continues. Especially when it's like an action movie.

I used to free solo a lot, and I used to have falling dreams all of the time.

When I lost my grip in my dream, I was jolted out of bed in a drenching sweat. For some reason, I was always on a big overhang when I fell.

Thankfully, now that my beard is grey and hair is about gone, those disturbing dreams have become rare.

I have had so many falling dreams that now my mind doesn't care anymore

I just fall and my mind says it's only a dream, it'll be OK
so I just relax and let er fly
and then I just go on to another part of the dream w/o going into panic mode

My dreams now always have me skating (ski skating style) instead of walking, I skate with my tennis shoes on in my dreams, somehow they work just fine, everyone else skates, so it's just normal action in my dreams.

and when I ride my bike in a dream, I just toe tap the peddles really fast and don't turn full circles.
I finally figured that out, I'm actually moving my feet in my sleep up and down.
