Damn, too young. I was never a fan but I did get to see him in 81, he opened for the Stones in LA, it did not go well
On October 9th, 1981, The Rolling Stones played the first of two nights at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in California. According to many reports and rumors over the years, Prince opened the show wearing bikini briefs and a trench coat. Concert goers were not yet ready for the purple one’s androgynous stage attire and promptly hurled beer cans and insults at him. Prince only got a few songs into his set.

Well, I guess he's finally partying like it's 1999.
He had amazing talent, for sure.
He'd produce, record and mix an entire album, playing all the instruments, drums, etc. himself. He did one like that way back in the late 1970's, long before it became fashionable for DIY recording artists to do that at home, on computers.
According to many reports and rumors over the years, Prince opened the show wearing bikini briefs and a trench coat.
I saw him on SNL in 1981, and he wore a trench coat and was dressed like Dr. Frankenfurter underneath. He'd spin around, and reveal the lingerie. It didn't seem overly strange, because SNL itself was pretty strange and new.
As I recall, the song was something about, "I just want to party up."
EDIT: I found the 1981 SNL performance of Party Up. The peep show starts at about 2:00.

Prince and Jimmy Jam Harris played at our high school in 1976. For free.
There's a dance hall in downtown Minneapolis--1st aVenue--If you saw Purple Rain some of the movie was shot there--In the 80's we'd go dancing on friday and saturday nights- Prime danceteria it was called..about once month the rumor was that Prince was going to be playing that night. The rumour made the town electric. And he did this quite often but I never made any of the shows.

SHORT TAKES : Prince Loses Chef to Junk Food
February 01, 1990| From Times staff and wire service reports
MINNEAPOLIS — Rock star Prince's fondness for macaroni and cheese and canned cake frosting was too much for his chef, who quit after only a month on the job.
"He eats a lot of junk food. I have the feeling it's going to catch up with him," Carmen Bonilla of Minneapolis said Wednesday of the svelte Prince.
Bonilla, 36, a professional chef for 10 years, said she began working for Prince just before Christmas. Her last day on the job was Wednesday.
"He hasn't had the opportunity to develop his palate," Bonilla said of the reclusive rock star. "He doesn't eat out very much because he's shy and he hates the public. . . . He wants the comfort food he grew up on."

“I’m single, celibate, and sexy,” the singer proclaimed in a 2008 USA Today interview. Prince attributed the change to his conversion to Jehovah’s Witness, and has since sworn off singing many of his old sexually-charged hits like “Darling Nikki” or “Do Me, Baby.” Digging through Prince’s catalog provides endless fodder for lyrics that would make celibates cower, such as the dripping candle imagery and “I’d rather do you after school like some homework” in “Shhh.” Then there’s the Lovesexy album cover above…

WHHAAAATTTTTT? quess that was prolly before selfies, eh? i seen him play. It would'a been a dream come true for me to shoot hoops with the Prince. Maybe the only thing i could school him at! Ha. (just kidd'in brother, i'd let you win on your home court). The man was a true rock star! i luve most the guitar in the first few albums. Man-o-man, it was like Jimmy never left, cept, there was something quite different. Something like a, honoring of femininity.... (those words are weak for the complexity of Prince's kingdom). He was a man of huge stature(ain't talk'in bout physical here)in the spiritual realm! He wasn't only a black man playing the baddest white man's rock, doing the best black man's move's. He showed sensitivity behind his harshness..He crossed all the genre's. This was a single minded man, not half this, or half that...
RIP Prince

The first song I heard from him was Little Red Corvette, didn't much impress me. Then Purple Rain came out and he was everywhere, still I wasn't sure, couldn't relate too well.
Then, one night I was watching the American Music Awards with a friend. Mostly I didn't like that show because a large portion of the music was canned and the artists were doing a high end version of karaoke. Prince came out and did Purple Rain live. It had so much energy, at one point he kicks over the mic stand in a burning fury of guitar work. I was sold!

The water gets murkier. Prince reportedly told People in 2009 that he suffered epileptic seizures in childhood.
There's talk of two hip replacements needed, heart murmurs. There's speculation running rampant.
I had a friend WK who was epileptic. It's no walk in the park.
When you get to the point that the docs are telling you to replace a hip, you're generally in excruciating pain whenever you move.

Hey zbrown... tinyurl.com. Check it out.
....
Looks like oxycodone abuse maybe. Such a tragedy.
People need to learn about these mechanisms, dynamics, phenomena,
interactions between body and drug, brain and drug (however you want to describe it)
beginning in youth and then over and over thru the years.
Oxycodone (Percocet) has its place. It's a needless tragedy when people
don't know enough about drug mechanisms that there's little respect
for what can happen, the consequences.
Opiates have their place. But they need to be understood like cliffs and rotary saws - they can be
dangerous, fatal. Today by millions of people opiates are not treated as such.
Peter: "Consequences, David. It's the little things."
David: "The little things... there's nothing bigger, is there?"
Of course one could make the case that when you're older or when you're in certain mood states
you're just more carefree and just don't care as much about things, eg, consequences.

Is it just a coincidence that the use of Vicoden, Oxycodone, Fentanyl and other modern opiods has been accompanied by an increase in overdose deaths, and an epidemic of heroin addiction?
Twenty or thirty years ago, there weren't as many people dying from prescription painkiller overdoses, and Middle America didn't have a serious heroin problem.
Are those newly-patented and highly profitable painkillers more addictive and dangerous than earlier meds, like morphine?
Or, are they just more widely available, and more often abused?
Personally, I just avoid the stuff as much as possible. I am very lucky I am not hurt and in pain. I have a baggie full of opium poppy seeds, in case I ever need to grow my own pain medicine. They came from a beautiful plant with big purple and white flowers, which I almost cut down because I thought it was a thistle. The seed pod sap turned a Sherman cigarette into a magical dream stick.

I always appreciated him but it was beyond me. Raspberry beret worked for me even tho i was more a butthole surfers kinda kid.
Dying too early is the mainstay if rock, not that i think prince has. Hendrix was too early, prince may be just right. True rock is not an old mans game. He will never be a relic.
Despite being an 80s icon i have a feeling he will gain more relevance over time.

Monkey brain? Totally, you nailed that. What prince had in straight eros they have in intellectual courage. Theres lots if overlap id say.

feynman was a critic where others feared to be. a true scientist with the courage to apply the method to the protagonists themselves. without critics at the center, science devolves into what it sets out to rise above.
same as any artist. patton kicking holes in style and taste will always trump whatever accolades style and taste may achieve, despite how many stadiums it fills.
prince played the rules very well all the way to the top, a virtuoso talent well padded out by an indulgent industry. this of course has its own value - but its not everything.

Fe alternatively fi. What a hard man to kill.
Buster and Rogers Nelson along with Desmond Dekker became fast fiends through their Reggae/Witness connections and studio work...
Nine-Nights, also known as Dead Yard, is a funerary tradition practiced in the Caribbean (primarily Grenada, Dominica, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, Haiti and the Dominican Republic). It is an extended wake that lasts for several days, with roots in African tradition. During this time, friends and family come together to the home of the deceased. They share their condolences and memories while singing hymns and eating food together.
You pick him up, you lick him down
Him bounce right back,
What a hard man fe dead! (Hard man fe dead!)
You pick him up, you lick him down
Him bounce right back,
What a hard man fe dead! (Hard man fe dead!)
Them seh, the cat's got a nine life
But this man got ninety-nine life, cause...
Them pick him up, you lick him down,
Him bounce right back,
What a hard man fe dead! (Hard man fe dead!)
Them boil one pot of chocolate tea.
And all the fried fish they caught in the sea
They also got six quart o' rum
Saying that they waiting for the nine night to come
The last time I heard them say
That this man was dead (this man was dead)
They find him black eyes
And them lay it all upon his head (the man was dead)
Now the procession leads to the cemetery
The man all a howl, Don't you bury me,
You pick him up, you lick him down
Him bounce right back,
What a hard man fe dead!
(Hard man fe dead, ... hard man fe dead)
/Instrumental interlude/
Them boil one cup of chocolate tea
And all the fried fish they caught in the sea
They aso got six quart o' rum
Saying that they waiting for the nine night to come
The last time I heard them say
That this man was dead (this man was dead)
They find him black eyes
And them lay it all upon his head ('pon his head)
You should see them goin' to the cemetery
The old man holla howl, Won't you bury me?
Them drop the box and run,
What a whole lot o' fun!
What a hard man fe dead! (hard man fe dead)
You pick him up, you lick him down

Prince made being weird fashionable and acceptable.
And the world is better off for it.
Most of the wars and conflicts throughout history have been caused by one group of people trying to impress their self-focused idea of what is right onto a different group of people.
My friend said that he saw Prince open for the Rolling Stones in Los Angeles in 1982, and someone threw a Jack Daniels handle jug and hit him in the head.
Prince kept playing that night, and kept playing for the next 35 years.
Prince fought ignorant intolerance, and won.
The rest of us should also embrace tolerance and acceptance and inclusion.
This life we have is too short to waste on making it miserable for ourselves and others.

Uh, I'd say Oscar Wilde had him by a hundred years plus he was more eloquent although,
unfortunately, he didn't quite manage to make it acceptable.

Prince's representatives arranged for the musician to meet a California doctor to help him kick an addiction to painkillers shortly before his death, according to a newspaper report published Wednesday.
Prince's representatives called Dr. Howard Kornfeld on April 20, the day before the musician died, to seek emergency help, attorney William Mauzy told the Minneapolis Star Tribune

I may have missed it somewhere here, but what was the reason for him taking Percocet in the first place, which eventually led to his addiction and death?

Pain of performing in public

I've heard from here say that Prince had a problem with sore hips caused he believed by wearing high-heel shoes on stage during his performances. If so, the pain could have been entirely psychogenic. That's one of the big problems with treating essentially psychosomatic pain with highly addictive opioids. Given the structural assumptions behind modern scientific medicine, doctors don't have any other way of treating pain than prescribing pain killers. Vicious cycle. An over-achieving perfectionist who isolates himself like Prince is a perfect candidate for psychosomatic pain symptoms.

Here's the DEA on Fentanyl:
Fentanyl is about 100 times more potent than morphine as an analgesic.
Fentanyl is abused for its intense euphoric effects. Fentanyl can serve as a direct substitute for heroin in opioid dependent individuals. However, fentanyl is a very dangerous substitute for heroin because it is much more potent than heroin and results in frequent overdoses that can lead to respiratory depression and death. Very serious stuff.

Yes. But have you seen the dance routines he did, and the shoes he wore? And of course he did it a lot. That would end most dancers careers from all sorts of injuries. Sh*t, just walking around in that footwear...
I think he had to keep performing, much like many of us get deeply hooked on climbing. Initially pain meds enabled him to keep going...

I heard a report today that the medical examiner in Prince's case made the comment, and I'm paraphrasing:
" He died of an accidental self-administered overdose..."
WTF?

It means he didn't mean to kill himself, Ward. It was accidental.
I see. But I thought Dr. Prince was incapable of botching an otherwise simple, straightforward medical procedure?
Are they going to have to drag his "Doctor " into court like Michael Jackson's.
I smell a show trial ratings bonanza.
The medical examiner/coroner must be a golfing buddy of Prince's Doctor .

being relieved of pain in all it's forms can drive people to take on unintended solutions.
Agreed.. But that's assuming everything and everyone in this story is on the up and up. But I smell a Michael Jackson type situation. Money. Drugs.
But as the examiner said it was just an accident. Like someone walking along and then slipping on a banana peel or walking into an uncovered manhole.
I could be wrong.
However, may he rest in peace.
Years ago I heard a Prince story that involved an A& R rep giving a big exec at a major label a Prince demo by the then unsigned and undiscovered Prince.
The exec said " sign this guy right away" and " sign the back-up band on the demo. Excellent band"
The A&R then replied " this artist is the band : the guitars, the drums, the horns, the bass, the keyboards, and all the voxes-- and he can dance"
