Local Joshua Tree guide Bob has been diagnosed with cancer, and needs to have an MRI. So my friend Sara Susca set up a gofundme account, the URL is below.

I drove down to see Robert last week. Had a good chat as always and he is staying positive, but he is facing some serious issues here.

I know that seems like the understatement of the year, but the big issue beyond the diagnosis is that Medical is dragging their feet as always, and it pisses me off to no end that people that need help FAST just get blown off.

Robert's been my bud for a long time, and I know that he was pretty adamant about no fundraisers. Well, tough luck pal - you have a lot of friends and we are all going to do what we can to get you well again. You've given more than enough good karma to have some swing back your way.

Stahlbro, I want to come to.

$3565.00 has been raised so far on Go Fund Me on FaceBook. Awesome! The goal is 11,000. Robert needs 10,000 but Go fund takes a cut. I challenge you all to send a few bucks to the fund.

Think of it this way:

+ Todd doesn't need to throw an expensive party
+ You save gas for your vehicle and time....even tho we'd rather have a fundraiser party.
+Dude, Robert, has been the man for many of us....and a friend.
+All of us can chip in a little to save a life. Right?

I have a very nasty form of liver cancer that is due to Hep C (don't know how I got that).

There is a tumor on my right lobe of the liver. I go in for an MRI on Wednesday.

After that they will decide if they can cut it out. If not, then I'm in BIG trouble.

So everyone, let's start a "Carve Robert like a roasted turkey" campaign.

I just heard something on NPR that BITD people in the military would get innoculated with a pneumatic needle. When it "hit" the skin, small amounts of blood would be released. It hurt like hell, and everybody flinched. As they did, the blodd would splash back onto the head of the thing, and so fluids got 'traded' by this. It was a huge reason many Viet Nam vets ended up with Hep C. Yes, there was some of IV drug use, but so many vets who had never used a needle were getting Hep C, it was finally traced to that.

Praying to the Universe for "good news"(since getting invasive surgery is gonna ne good news) on the results, Robert.

rlf -- "I have a very nasty form of liver cancer that is due to Hep C (don't know how I got that)."

Could be from outside pathogens?

We had a MVA once where the vehicle was over the side and the driver was bleeding all over the place.

There was blood all over the litter rails and I had no gloves so I said I'm not touching the litter.

Someone else with gloves on took my place for the scree evac of 100 feet to the ambulance.

Later the call came over the radio that the driver had Hep C and everyone that made contact with pathogens had to go to the clinic.

Sh!t!!!! That's why it's so important to watch out for this sh!t when dealing with victims in the field.

The best of wishes to you Robert .....

We can't say anything here that will make Robert's liver well. But we can do something in return
for the huge effort he put into making the "Pit'". I have talked to Robert about the invasive
Tamarisk growing on Sunset next to the entrance to the Pit. Its seeds need to be bagged, the
trunk cut down, and the root crown dug out. I'll start at 10 AM Saturday 4/30. Come join in for a
bit. The morning ought to do it.

PM me if you have a question.

Stannard

Edit:

Went well.

Tamarisk is nasty stuff. The roots store energy so it can re-sprout and get back to sun light even
after it is cut off. So I went down five feet and left only a root perhaps one inch in diameter. Then
if I cut off any re-growth every other week for two or three years, it should be possible to kill it.

While working the problem a retired Marine stopped by to help. I really enjoyed talking to him.

Well folks I went to the Dr yesterday to get the results from my MRI. Unfortunately the news isn't good.
The cancer is inoperable. There are in fact 2 tumors. So I am now Terminal. I have to arm wrestle with the drug company to get some medication that will prolong my life some. No promises there, but it's better than nothing.

I probably have a few years left. So until things get really ugly my plan is to just keep rolling along like always. Obnoxious, outspoken etc. In other words, a giant pain in the ass!

Robert, sorry to hear of the prognosis. We'll all be following you all too soon, but I love that you are keeping a positive force around you and this ugly thing in this troubling time. It's the best hope of still having a happy existence and maybe still beating it. It certainly puts a perspective of some of the otherwise intense things discussed here out to be but trivial meaningless truffles. (top 2 subject right now, Cruz is Lucifer and Micro or Mini Traxion - leaves a rational person all but shaking your head over how utterly trivial that stuff really is)

Key points:
• Hepatitis C affects 3.2 million Americans and kills more people each year than HIV/AIDS in the United States.1
• Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2013 and by the European Commission
in January 2014, Gilead’s Sovaldi® (sofosbuvir) 400 mg tablets in combination with other antiviral agents for the
treatment of chronic hepatitis C (genotypes 1, 2, 3, and 4) offers a potential cure with a short-term course of therapy,
an important consideration.
• Gilead’s latest innovation, the once-daily single tablet regimen Harvoni® (ledipasvir 90 mg/sofosbuvir 400 mg), has
further advanced treatment for patients with genotype 1 hepatitis C infection by providing high cure rates with as
little as eight or 12 weeks of therapy, without the need for interferon injections or ribavirin.
• The price of Gilead’s hepatitis C treatments reflects the significant clinical, economic and public health value of these
drugs, and is comparable to, or in many cases less than, the cost of older, less effective regimens.
• In the United States and around the world, Gilead is working to increase access to its medicines for all people who
can benefit from them, regardless of where they live or their ability to pay.

http://esofosbuvir.com/harvoni-cost-in-usa-canada-europe-egypt-india/

Harvoni is the newly discovered wonder drug for Hepatitis C. Marketed by pharmaceutical giant Gilead Sciences, it has more than 95% cure rate. A major problem is the cost of Harvoni – with $94,500 price tag for standard 12-week treatment, Harvoni is one of the most expensive medicines in the world. However, many patients seek out a generic version of Harvoni from India which only costs around $900 – a fraction of a cost of the original.
Harvoni offers high cure rate and moderate side effects. Learn how to recognize Harvoni side effects and how to fight them.

Eligible patients may pay no more than $5 per co-pay for HARVONI
We believe that cost should not be a barrier to receiving treatment. That’s why the makers of HARVONI offer a co-pay coupon. If you are eligible, you may pay no more than $5 per co-pay. Need a replacement coupon?
Please note the following:
You are not eligible if you are enrolled in a government healthcare prescription drug program such as Medicare Part D or Medicaid. This includes when you are in the Medicare Part D coverage gap known as the "donut hole."
The HARVONI Co-pay Coupon Program will cover the out-of-pocket costs of your HARVONI prescriptions up to a maximum of 25% of the catalog price of a 12-week regimen of HARVONI. See Terms and Conditions below.

Nita, thank you for suggesting that I post here.

Here are some links to the autoimmune paleo diet, which may help. When Doug was diagnosed and given only a short while to live, we used a lot of these ideas, and it helped him to live on and stay strong for several more years than the doctors had given him to keep going. And I have used it for six months and have gone from lots of fuzzy mis-diagnosis to being declared "totally healthy" and "we don't know what happened, especially since you refused the medicines and chemo and treatments" statements.

This may not cure you, but it might help with getting stronger, helping the immune system, and let you enjoy life more and longer.

This is my favorite site, run by some super people and with great information:
http://autoimmune-paleo.com

This one is a thirty-day plan, complete with menus, shopping lists, and lots of motivational help. It is a great way to ease into the program, and while it is full paleo, there are special sections for autoimmune help:
https://paleorestart.com

Also, one thing I found to help balance and maintain my immune system was peony extract, which was recommended by two naturopaths. This helps to modulate the immune system and control autoimmune disorders:
http://www.lifeextension.com/magazine/2014/3/safely-manage-autoimmune-diseases/page-01

Doug was part of several clinical trials in the USA and Canada and Europe. We received incredibly good information and a lot of help from Life Extension Foundation's Bill Faloon and the doctors.

One of the toughest parts of attending to cancer is getting rid of the stress, and we used a lot of meditation, especially healing meditations by Belleruth Naperstek and Jason Stephenson, both of whom have some of their meditations on You Tube for free.

I hope that helps.
Lynne, thank you and sowr for mentioning the GoFundMe. Off to drop a couple of coins there now. Lynne, you are right: show it!

Oh, Moose, I think that yes, each of us must find our individual optimal foods and eating plan. I can have gluten-free beer, but don't much like the taste, so I think I will stay with my small glass of savage cabernet a few times each week.

I did forget one thing, though: dandelion root has exceptional medicinal qualities. Here's a recent article that came across my desk(top) today:

http://etliberty.com/dandelion-root-health-miracle/ As with anything or anyone, the user's mileage may vary. We are all so wonderfully and beautifully unique.

I hope you keep feeling better, and maybe you could try giving up all alcohol for a month. The AIP Paleo diet is a foundational plan, to which one can slowly add things back into the digestive system, making sure there are no adverse conditions as a result of the additional substance. And yes, gut flora is so very important, too. I make my own mild ginger kimchee.

Robert, we are all pulling for you. Remember to laugh a lot. :)

feralfae

Meanwhile, I will try to remember to sip an occasional small glass of mead or sherry as alternatives to the cabernet.

Here's the way I chose to handle things and my view on it. I have 2 choices:

1) I can lay around and feel sorry for myself, and not accomplish anything but look pathetic and annoy the sh#t out of everyone. That's not my way.

2) I can accept the unpleasant news and move as best as I can.

I chose #2. It's my way. I'm not thrilled about any of it, but I have handle this head on. I love it when my friends come up to visit. It's a real shot in the arm. I am sure as time goes on the more this will sink in. But it has already been a slap in the face. Oh well.

I won't lie to anyone, THIS SUCKS. But it is what it is. So here I be.

I would like to thank my wife Hilde. She has been there every step of the way. She has handled a MOUNTAIN of paper work. Taken care of all of the interactions with the Dr's to help push things through.

Again, you guys are all very supportive and I appreciate it.

I met Robert 9 years ago when he volunteered to teach a crack climbing clinic at a climbing event I managed in Joshua Tree. He gave all the participants free crack climbing gloves (cheating - ha!) and I received nothing but positive feedback from his group after the event - they loved him! He didn't get paid for this gig, but received a free rope and you would've thought he hit the jackpot. I know many friends that he has opened their home to in JT to camp while visiting the park and they all have spoken highly of him. Hilde, Kate and I send love and strength to you and Robert during this difficult time - please let me know if there is anything we can do - we are here for you.

You were also one of very few I trusted with my private thoughts when my husband, Dan died. Thank you for your friendship!

And Hilde, thank you for being the supremely gracious person to let so many enjoy Robert's friendship and craziness after a hard day of work. You are blessed with many people that not only care about you, but love you. I can only suggest that you allow the process of grief to unfold. Each individual is different. Hilde, everything Lynne said about grieving is good advice. I hope you are surrounded by lots of loving, caring people, and that you can reach out for hugs, support, and help and feel all of it coming to you.

I'm sitting here in our house in Fairbanks, surrounded by so much of Doug's life and our things, and find comfort in the memories. I know you and Robert shared a good life together, and I hope the memories and love will sustain you now. Let yourself grieve, and when you are ready, find a good support group if you can, because it can really help.

i have been in dismay all day. i planned on goin climbing since it's my only day off this week. but i couldn't muster the drive to the monument.. knowing i'd have to drive by Robert's place i know i would't be able to grip. i atleast wanted to go downtown tho, cause that's where i remember seeing Robert the most. He was my best neighbor of my first house in JTree 15 yrs ago. i climbed with or around Robert periodically over the years. i never carried a camera back then. i'm stoked over MisterE's pics, THAT's just how i wanna remember Robert. Under the confines of a TR and a safe environment Robert would always try and have the best time. And when he belayed me on my first atempt on Solid Gold, he was SOLID! Over the last years i'd catch him more often driving around in his red truck. Used to see him alot at Crossroads(when it was good), and Sam's, the Pit, even homedepot.. so i went to the laundromat. while my clothes were gettin wet, i took my new puppy for a walk down the old neighborhood. My old digs with the skateable birdbath in the front yard(but no more slackline or climbing wall), and Roberts old house with the drapes still drawn closed. While my clothes were drying, i stared out the window that had painted on it "yadyrevE 7-7 nepO" watching the cars passing down the hyway.

i didn't see Robert's truck.

I loved what GDavis said...

Robert was such a good dude. SUCH a good dude. Fuvking class through and through. Dirtbag to the end and made of gold. There just isn't anyone like him, anywhere. Ever.

That's him.

I am going to miss you so much, man. You didn't know me and my wife from Adam when we met, but you promptly offered us a place to camp any time we were in the area. We took you up on that offer, many times, and I am so glad that I got to spend time with you and climb with you. I will never forget you dancing around the camping area like a 10 year old, grinning and pointing out all the lines we JUST HAD to try. Ha! Your enthusiasm, your zest for life, and your tales are something that I will always remember fondly.

At one point, Robert and I talked about going to the Valley and climbing, and I am sorry that I didn't try a little harder to make that happen - being on a wall with him would have been an absolute blast.
I am SO glad that I decided to go down last month and visit with him....he was in pain and tired as hell, but we still talked for hours. And his eyes still lit up when he was telling climbing tales, like they always did.

Sh#t, I got the news on this while the wife and I were over on the North Rim and kind of out of Internet range. Started typing this and I guess it's hitting me a bit now. I am REALLY going to miss Robert, but I am sure happy that I got to spend time with him.

Hilde, you and Robert's family have my deepest sympathies. The world is going to be a smaller place with Robert gone.

Thank you for the times, the climbs, and for teaching me about the "rope that's too long" - I will cherish the one you gave me even more now.

I like to think maybe you're sitting up there somewhere with Bachar and Harding, having beers around a campfire or just climbing outrageous sh#t in the afterlife. You touched so many lives in your time here, and your memory will live on forever. RIP my friend.

I can't believe he's gone. I thought he had more time left and wanted to visit him on the ranch during the long, hot JT summer coming up where no one else is around but die hard locals like us. So shocked cancer took him so quickly in just a few months time.

Many of my favorite times with Robert were along side Blitzo, Todd and Tucker. Great times climbing, great company and Robert was always the one to break out stories that kept us all in stitches.

He was the king of slander, could make jokes about anyone and anything, including himself. Nothing held him back. I knew if I was going to be hanging with Robert, my sides would be hurting by the end of the day from laughing so much.

Too many memories to go over in an online post. He was one of a kind in the greatest way possible. His smile, infectious laughter, the call it like he saw it attitude and amazing generosity to his friends. He had a life well lived even it if was cut so damn short.

Miss you Robert. You were a stellar star in the Joshua Tree family.

My friend SiouxJuan posted a FB photo of all of us at the ranch after he told me of the news of Robert's passing Sunday morning...forgot when was even taken, probably 2008/2009 or so.. I was the only girl as usual running with this motley climbing crew. On my right was Blitzo and my left was Robert. I can't believe they're both gone now.

Thank you Robert for all the laughs, hospitality and good times. You will be missed so much.

From Robert's family:
The outpouring of stories, photos, and fond memories about Robert have been tremendously uplifting to Hilde and the rest of us. Please keep them coming - we are collecting them for a family album. It is amazing how many communities Robert touched: climbers, IT, desert rats, musicians, solar construction, and many other friends scattered across the US and abroad. Many of you have asked about plans for a celebration of his life. Right now, planning something like that is beyond Hilde - she is quite drained. However, if any of Robert's friends would like to help organize something, please contact Ted DeWitt, Robert's oldest brother (tmanta88@gmail.com). Please pass this along to his other friends.

The first time I remember meeting Robert was when one of the JTNP people go to use the campsites by the ranger place, and I was lucky enough to get an invite t a pretty awesome part of the park unknown to most non-locals like me.

Robert was there, and being the "Entertaining Uncle" to two youngsters there. I just remembering him bouncing, bouncing bouncing the little girl, and her loving it and wanting more. He wound those little ones up and I bet they slept so soundly that night that their parents got that precious gift that parents of little ones relich - to sleep in a little late.

Robert would swing by every so often at the Pit, where I stayed a few years as a pauper who appreciated the extremely convenient location with (if you can believe this one) the feeling of safety. For a single woman, the Pit WAS the safest place to camp outside the park, and a large part of that space being available was because of Robert.

As I said, I was in pauper mode for a while there, and on one of Robert's visits, as he left, he handed me what I could tell was a folded up piece of paper money. He made no deal out of it, and it was clear he wanted no deal made, and it was also clear that the gift was not to be rejected out of stupid false pride. It was a twenty, and it made the difference for me in that moment. Gas and some grub, a burger at the Saloon as a little luxury while plonked down there with their wifi.

I am very sorry to know that Robert went so quickly; I wanted to see him again, but I'm glad he was spared too much pain and the discomfort of dealing with the vulnerability that comes with passing to the next phase through illness.

I'm very saddened to hear of Robert's death, and my condolences to Hilde, and all his family and friends. I only knew Robert through seeing him at events at the Gordons, and occasional online chitchat, but he seemed a stout and lively fellow. Plus he married a Norwegian...

My sympathies to all for their loss.

the Pit WAS the safest place to camp outside the park, and a large part of that space being available was because of Robert.

Indeed. With the help of Phil Bircheff the Pit managed itself. It's closing was a loss to the local residents also. One passerby commented that when climbers were there no one had to worry about what might be going on,

The Pit's story was most unusual. Thanks to Robert's effort.

I did not know Robert well, but would run into him at various functions here in JT and he was always a big presence - booming voice, big smile, big hug (he actually cracked my neck once with his hug!), just a wonderful person. I worked with Hilde on my short stint at Nomad Ventures and we became friends - another wonderful person, friendly and open, both she and Robert are what I considered quality people, and I certainly don't say that about everyone.

While working at Nomad's, Hilde & Robert were always sending texts or calling so it was obvious to me the two had a solid and very close relationship. I think they balanced one another very well. I know that Robert was very devoted to Hilde while she went through her own fight with cancer and he took great care of her. This says a lot about the kind of person Robert was.

Hilde, I cannot imagine what you are going through right now, but Kate and I are heartbroken for you and you have been in our thoughts. I am here in JT for another week or two so if you need anything, I am just a phone call or text away. We are both so very sorry for your loss.

Another one gone way too soon :(

Robert Fonda - Keeper of the high desert, Proud husband, electrician, SAR starter, computer guru, rock guide, proud dirt-bag and true friend WAS the real deal, you nailed it Steve.

Robert had a way of being loyal, kind, sarcastic and sometimes, haha most times, downright belligerent all at the same time. He could tear a strip out of you and then make you laugh with him about it.

Never a dull moment when RLF was around, never!

We spoke a few weeks before his passing, stoic, brave and proud to the end he was.

My deepest condolences to you Hilde and Roberts family and many, many friends.

Had to wait awhile to write this, but it's such a perfect Robert story in that it shows his true selfless nature (and I think Hilde's also)

I "met" Robert via the old rec.climbing about 20 years ago. A few years later we had still never met in person. I had a business trip to Fort Irwin and wanted to go climbing, but could not fit all my work gear and climbing/camping stuff. Hilde was very sick at the time, but Robert still volunteered to lend me (really a stranger still) a tent, sleeping bag, full rack, and rope, so I could go climbing.

That he (and Hilde) would allow a stranger to come by his house in what had to be a very stressful time and borrow a couple thousand dollars worth of gear for a week shows what good people Robert and Hilde are.

Gonna miss you, my friend.

Happy Anniversary Hilde...I kinda believe that in marriage you are NEVER seperated from your true Love, the spirit will still be present and visit you. My Grandmother told me, that when you are having a memory of a Loved one that has passed, it is their spirit visiting you and you are having that memory to agnolage their presents. Robert's spirit is with you everytime you think of him!

Just a bump,
Although I had a strange dream. I'm walking in a Josh expanse and the washes, seem a ways away.
I never dream of the monument
Sorry national park.
I will try to put these thoughts together, It seems like I know everyone, A man I don't know is un-clear but present in the group .
The group includes climbers and a strange assortment that kinda shocked me.
A man it took a bit to place, was my childhood Barber,
but his once jet black Pom-pador, was salt and pepper, in a widows peak pattern,
As this group moved i saw distinctly a
Wash? or side vally that tampered into domes. The thing is I'm lost I have no route reference in the dream to give any hint of where.
It has been a maddening day I do not want to lose this, It was this not that canyon that we headed to across a grade down then Of course up.
There are 4 distinct domes 2 on each side of the canyon we follow the 6-7 climbers , a lot of people for a dream. The objective, seen only from the valley is a high gully that splits left (east?)and ends below the farthest dome,s back side and a lesser dome that has a large Blocky formation at the top. The balcony that lies below the Very Rectangular spires, Is huge.
The thing is that Im sure when i get the draw for the first pitch, I'm getting it to gather and I look over at The Barber and he is Belaying some one, I Ask, Who's that? & why is he on the rock?
The Greek barber, looks at me, & says what are you Heat stroked, that Fonda. you were taking to long.
There is more some i kinda understand so brought on my intense family strife in my life.
I do not know what to say other than it would be wrong, given how much time I spend, to then not share.

Be well!
You are held in the light
be in the now

Much love.

More than that
I' cannot say now

The day I first met Robert he said he was on the skip loader digging the pit for two solid weeks. That's
a long time when you don't know how something will turn out. For two years before he passed the Pit
was a great success. The place was clean, orderly, and there were no complaints thanks to the support
of Phil Bircheff and others. Even the neighbors were glad we were there so the local hooligans would not
trash the neighborhood.

Thanks to Robert's effort, climbers had a huge win.

Was thinking of respecting Hilde and Robert's family wishes and defering decisions to them...we can help in making it all happen to ease the work load on them. Working on contacting people right now that were close to Robert and Hilde that should be included. Looking at a calander the 30th of October is a Sunday??? Were we thinking of the 29th a Saturday, will be easier for local travel arrangements. I will check with Ted and Hilde and will keep everyone wanting to be involved in the loop. Cool??
