Lots of good and bad in this world, and sometimes the negative spectrum overshadows the positive.

So, what's great in your life as of late?

Me? I'm getting married in August (still trying to figure out how to pay for it, but, it'll all work out). And, I just hired on with a great crew building homes here in NH.

So, love and work doing what I really enjoy are my great things.

Feel free to share.

I had an unexpected great season of climbing at Joshua Tree after open heart surgery in late October.
Special thanks to my wonderful and supportive friends in JT; Todd Gordon, Dave Gustavson, John Shippling, Aubre Adams and Lori Williams, See you all next season.

Had a near death experience from anaphylactic shock induced by anesthetic a few days ago. Straightened out a few philosophical queries for me.

And its a great cherry blossom season. Like fragrant pink snow everywhere, swirling in the wind and accumulating around rocks and gutters.

Found anawesome new coffee shop.

My daughter learned to write her name.

Does 12 new routes (.10c and under) in a generally passed-by area - an easy 15 minute hike from the parking, and a 3-minute approach - count as great happenings?

We think so:

Congrats to all for having Great Things happening in your lives!

On my this week's adventure, old mines, mineral collecting, & ghost town visit to central Nevada, I discovered I had outlived a Nevada pioneer by a month.

I found some good garnets.

Made friends with a collared lizard.

& took my first ever "claw-foot" bathtube shower this morning in Tonapah's nicely restored 99 year old Hotel Mizpah.

Home tonight to beat a game-changer rain storm. I should write a trip report, since I have too many other great things to report from my old-guy adventure.

Got bored with semi retirement over the last year since the distressed properties I was buying and remodeling dried up. So, prices have recovered enough to make spec home building here in Reno a possibility again and that's what I'm doing. The problem is that there are so few tradesmen around after the housing depression that I was getting stratospheric high framing bids. I resolved to frame myself with a two person crew. Getting off the couch again (relatively speaking) at the age of 61 to hard labor is kicking my ass way more than regular, but moderate climbing. But I'm having fun between the aches and pain.

After a long bout with a nasty bacterium ravaging my lung, I received a lung transplant 2 days before last Christmas. What a present. Without it I wouldn't have made it thru January. Now it looks like I can start climbing again sometime this summer. As far gone as I was it's going to be a slow recovery, buy I'm stoked and focused. The Doctors are amazed with my recovery so far. With a strong will there is a way to return to a passion I've always had.
Climb on.

It's great to be 63.

Helped a 50 something year old field worker get a referral for a prosthetic eye through Lion's Club. He had never been evaluated a prosthesis, since he lost his eye around 30 years ago. Financially he qualified, but resources are limited.

I talked to the providing clinic, and they mentioned that they had called him. He picked up his phone while working in the field, and someone helped translate for him. I don't think the timing hurt at all. ;)

Great news from all! I like good news!

I got home intact from a big Nevada mineral collecting/old mines/ghost towns trip. It was a lot of fun!

Except, on those long drives, I listened to about 6 hours of Fox news, trying to tell me how bad things are in America. Man those peoples are downers.

My friend posted a FB rant about how he's having trouble breaking up with Obama, how the upcoming election is reminding him about the end of his college days and having to say goodbye to his college girlfriend. It was a hilarious post, and I posted that someone should share this with Obama as it was super funny. Just heard from a friend that she printed the post and my comment out and handed it to Obama last night at a fundraiser. Supposedly the secret service dude handed the printout to Obama, who put it in his pocket, only to look at it later in the night and chuckle. I'm so proud that something my friend and I wrote made Obama laugh!

Being a foolish mendicant, I love poking holes in the Free Nepal crowd. How about "Free Hawaii" or "Free American Samoa" or Puerto Rico or all the First Nations. That is just my idea of a good time. And then I drop a " Since when does progress include theocracies?" Just to keep the yogis on their toesies.
Hearing the Tony Lama renounce his tradition is music to my ears. I'm a strong supporter of types of Zen Buddhism and Taoism and it's nice that he is leading by example.

Yesterday, someone told me that he had heard(from someone we both know) that there was a "woman at Coxing(trailhead where I live/work) who makes excellent chalkbags," and asked if I knew who this person was. Showed him the goods and he bought one on the spot.

Later in the day another person who was visiting said she received compliments all the time on her chalkbag(one I had sold her).

Also - getting the urge to get back to my novel, which I have worked on almost solely at the booth at Coxing. First draft should be completed in the next month or so! So - that's a pre-great thing.

I was able to RUN for about 200 yards yesterday after climbing all afternoon...... two years ago the back problems started, and I could not walk without falling down, one year ago I actually climbed after a grueling 100 yard approach.

I do the boring ass PT alone at 5:30am, the results are slow in coming. I can now walk about 1.5 miles before the legs drop out.

After the climbing, everything was warmed up and I started firing on all 12 cylinders....and I could RUN without my feet tripping me up.

I will keep on stretching and stretching and pulling on that rubber band things....It works.

Look out Needles, I'm coming back.

I really like the spirit of this thread. Here is mine:

I have a constant fear of missing out when it comes to cool work trips, and have indulged too often, at the expense of events that I will never be able to go back in time to attend, like an uncle's memorial.
I was scheduled to guide a trip to peak 11,300 in AK this May, but thanks to the client's rebooking, I can head out to DC to surprise my little brother's grad school graduation party (everyone thinks I will be in AK). Outdoor work is rewarding, but can be way too selfish at times. Happy to be able to spend some time with family.

Our family welcomed a one year old stray rescued from the Houston flooding. To mark the end of his second week with us, I took him to the height of land 20 minutes out our door to show him that "there will be no flooding here."

And this good thing happens every day, just with different color brush strokes.

My wife and I recently moved to Ashland, Oregon and we're building our dream home there right in town - can walk to anything we need. Every kind of playing outisde is close, except for rock. Have negotiated with the wife for a week a month to play on the Sierra Nevada batholith or other mountains. She's probably just as happy to get rid of my as I am to climb.

Congrats, Tom! gkids are awesome!

hey there say, ... wow, this is so wonderful...

i finally got time to come back...
been helping my 93 year old friend, a LOT and so much more,
that we have a really closer and fun friendship now, than
our first: of getting to know each other better, etc,
(she was my boss lady, for a bit, and that is how i got to know her) ...

well, now that i am back:

here is three cheers to all the:

getting well...
having births...
and all the other fantastic things going
on for EACH AND EVERY one of you!!!

wonderful to hear these situations! being turned for good...

ahhhh, wonderful to hear your wife loves you...
wonderful to hear of promotions...
wonderful to hear so much 'wonder' ... :)

me, i do get to share what i hoped for:

I OWN MY OWN HOUSE NOW...
thanks to the few that helped me...
former son in low = his old house, cheaper price, etc...
my mom adding some help...
and a few other minor things, etc...

wow!!

and, wow, after a traumatic divorce, all those years back,
i can have a happy mother's day, even when no one calls, :)
(however, i actually did get one sincere, call--but i was not home) ...

but, yes, i had a happy day, whereas:
years back, it was hard, on special days...
now:

new seeds, with folks, have grown into 'wonderful plants',
and i can see i belong here, and how a house, to
keep that issue, a good future anchor...

wow...

happy congrats to ALL OF YOU, and thank you all for sharing,
the:
treasure, of each 'someething great' that's happened in your life...

too many to name you all, but i enjoyed every story!!!
as if you were right here, talking and sharing it, with me...

Lots of great stuff, TFPU!!!

I've still got a great job, it's funny to take a job with a new contractor after 6 years with the last one. I get paid more to do things at a slower pace and a higher level of quality.

I'm still getting married, and it looks like we're probably going to be able to afford it. It's a super country, but (hopefully) super fun affair in my backyard, on the beach with the rapids behind it.

So, yeah, life doesn't suck.

Keep the stories coming!

Something great? Supertopo struck again, and greatness abounded.

Well, geezer-level greatness, at least.

After years of talking about it, Survival and I finally found the right time and right place to meet. But it wasn't just about Survival and me. The occasion was an "old climbing partners get-together" at Smith Rocks that happened to coincide with a chance for me to take a few days off.

So Mari and I drove down, and it turns out that Survival's old climbing partners (Mel and Scott) are also ST posters (Melski and ???), and they are not only great guys (and were seriously badass climbers) but they welcomed us into their circle with open arms.

No need to detail the climbing, orchard-tramping, music, and bullshitting adventures, but things took a serious turn for the weird on our second night. Mari and I decided to drive into Terrebonne for dinner, and the first thing we saw when we walked into the restaurant was another two climbing geezers -- and old Squamish partners of mine -- just finishing their dinner. One of them none of you would know (which is your loss), but the other was MH2. Turned out they were staying in the Skull Hollow campground too, and the next night was...

The gods give, and the gods take away. For the last five days they were in a generous mood.

Heidi & I had a big & great day yesterday!

It started with a 9:00 A.M. start to drive to our closest "big-city" (think population 40,000 people).

We were shopping redwood lumber to build a new porch railing for our old house. Since we have a wrap-around porch around 3/4 of our house, that's a lot of wood. Our first stop turned out to have a good stock of acceptable (to us) redwood & we spent 5 hours inspecting & pulling lumber, then hit a grocery store, bought a pizza & made it back to Choss Creek by 5:00 PM, without ever pissing each-other off, or being anything but pleasant to the folks we worked with.

After dinner, we celebrated with some cabernet on our front porch & a great sunset.

Meeting Ghost, climbing with him and sharing some hot chiles in the great outdoors has been a longtime goal of mine. We didn't have the ultimate adventure, but introducing him to some of my old crew, sharing some music, climbing with Mari, meeting Robert, getting together with Melski, Scott (Grinching) Pat Carr (Purplesage) John Rich, Andy and Robert was all PRICELESS!!

I hope to do a TR soon, to really bust out some photos, but I will share a few from my phone. It was so great meeting new people!!

Spent the week in Florida, and caught my biggest fish ever, a 6ft, 190 pound Tarpon. Amazing experience.

A few weeks back, my storage unit got broken into and sadly, they took my antique Kay acoustic guitar that my Mom bought me for my HS graduation gift. I played that thing from Canada to Mexico, and wore the frets clear to the boards. It was in need of a rebuild, so the bastards probably ended up tossing it in a dumpster somewhere.

Today, I got my first electric guitar, and named it Jan in memory of my Mom who passed a few years ago. Sounds great and I look forward to building many more new memories with it.

Spent a week in Switzerland. Rode a Mountain Coaster, did the Golden Tour of Mt Pilatus, hiked a super cool old bridge, visited the Dying Lion of Lucerne Monument. Hung out with people from all over the world visiting the tallest building in Switzerland, while I trained them to audit, rode old school non-motorized ferry across the Rhine, ate at multiple Michelin star restaurants, hiked medieval towns, and wine tasted in France's Alsace region. All in business class / rock star style! Yeah life hasn't sucked as of late for sure!

It's been a busy crazy last few months. Finally got a chance to hit the Big Apple as part of a Supplier Audit. But first was a check on the backyard grapes. The Rough Estate Red should be good in 2016:

But I was home for 3 days before I jumped ship to Connecticut. Day 1 was a day trip to Boston: Sam Adams Brewery (tons of free beer aka drunk before you leave), Red Sox Game at Fenway, then a MLS Game at Gilette Club Level:

LOL, I don't think so!

Day 2 day tripped the Big Apple for my first visit. It was a bit whirlwind and I only had one day, but fun none-the-less. Will help the planning for when the Mrs and I come back for more time: Times Square, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Wall St., Central Park, and 911 Memorial:

Had to put in a few days of auditing, but also got to go to the basketball Hall of Fame:

On the way home had a layover in Atlanta. If you end up here with some time to eat, go to "One Flew South" in the E Concourse. You will not be disappointed, it was fantastic!

Hadn;t seen my wife in alomst 3 weeks, so took yesterday off and we hit Berryessa for some relaxing water time and a little bit of fishing. Hit Berryessa Brewery on the way home, filleted and smoked the trout and made an awesome smoked trout spread I am enjoying right now for lunch.

Still have 3 days left of a 3 day weekend! Woot! Putting up a new route later today at my new crag and getting the whole family out on Sunday for them to sample the new cliff!

All good in VV!

Went to go find a hidden climbing area today way back in the upper hidden woods. Good times. Except the pup (ok, shes an elderly 13 year old dawg now) got some kind of stupid wandering lost look kind of like I imagine John (Norton) Schmidt has permanently when posting to Supertopo so I thought we should head back. I then had a similar experience to the dawg. Was a lot of work I guess. Had to pull over at the first market near civilization and drink a GD Coke to make it home and not fall asleep in the car. Never found the place but die connect with a Forest service trail that was shockingly 4-5 miles from where I thought it would be. Now we're drinking wine. Not the pup, she's trying to sleep although when she wakes up she's gone gimpy. Someone else just needs a bath and needs to get off the computer.

I finally made the committing decision to start my own wine analysis lab. Only two more months with a steady salary as a winemaker, then it's on me. I almost did this two years ago, but money was an issue. Anyway, with the great support of my wife, I'll be running a LLC in Washington state and trying to make it on my own. Feels scary but good. I've spent about $35k on lab equipment in the last three months and converted a space in the basement into a lab. Hopefully I'll be able to move to a commercial spot in the next six months or so. Time for a change.

Sapphire-blue skies in Fairbanks; got the Caribou stamp on my passport at Poker Creek for going over Top of the World Road to get here. Earlier in the trip, the roads were lined on each margin with flowers, all the way from Whitehorse to the Dawson ferry which took me across the Mighty Yukon River. I saw many nesting Tundra swans, lots of great birds, a bear nonchalantly strolling in the middle of the road, and many caribou.

After four years of serious medical adventures, which I still can barely believe I survived, I am back in our living room, relaxing on one of the leather couches I rescued from a dumpster and restored. I am sipping some celebratory tea. I made it up here in my new (used, but new to me) Forrester, and it has been a great car for the drive. Photos of Doug and Waterman and Alaska's mountains on the walls around me, and so glad to be back home and slowly settling in.

A Great Something was most definitely driving up to Dawson and then taking the Top of the World Road across into Alaska. It was a new route for me, and this time I went through Chicken and Tok, but next time I may take the Eagle route. It was a great experience.

Susan, are you guys getting up to Fiarybanks when you get to Alaska? You are most welcome here. I just put four packages of fresh Copper River salmon in the freezer. (I'm eating the rest this weekend.) I am in and out with work this summer, but hope to be more settled in by September.

I caught the red-eye from Denver to NH Thursday night, joining my brother from TX and two other siblings from NH for my Dad's 80th b-day tomorrow.

Yesterday I met a Native American elder, who is a dear friend and mentor, for dinner out and then a ceremonial Healing Circle with old and new friends.

Got to catch up with an old partner, and despite high humidity managed to enjoy three climbs that we had FA'd four years ago and now see a ton of traffic.

Around dinner time, my second brother showed up, and we all ate together with no spouses, kids, grand kids, or other assorted hangers-on. Just my parents and their four kids, alone together. No one can remember when that last happened.

Oh, and in a fit of compassion for the small NH winged wildlife, I donated blood. It just makes you feel good...

Just got back from a week in the Ditch. First time hands on rock in about 8 months, since I got sick.

Highlights included hanging with friends, hauling freight to Dinner Ledge and camping there so my buddies could blast Skull Queen, and teaching a newer climber how to jug and haul as we headed up to Heart for an overnight - which ended up being the first time I have been in a portaledge in a storm. Stayed dry and managed to get down the next day in between squalls, and got to the base just as it really started pouring. The best part is, for doing more physical work than I have in months, I feel pretty damn good.

Made some new friends, saw old ones. Took lots of pictures. Saw a rattlesnake, a marmot, wild horses with 2 foals, burros and a bear. And of course, got all that great vibe from being in the center of the universe. Life is good.
